FDL Movie Night: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Gay Porn Stars… But Were Afraid To Ask
Posted in: FDL Movie Night
Welcome Director, John Roecker.
Gay porn stars occupy an ambiguous and delicious role in modern gay culture: they are the gods and monsters of our sexual universe, really. The three most enticing words to hear about that man you’re ogling across the bar? “He does porn.” The most derisive insult to aim at him when he turns down your invite of company? “He does porn.”
Depending upon the inflection, “He does porn” can be the nicest thing to say about a fellow or the worst. I’ve heard it said both ways. Hell, I’ve SAID it both ways.
What is it about American culture — and its hypersexed gay subculture — that’s so messed up about sex that we create icons of underwear models in Times Square while we ridicule those who get paid for being filmed having sex? What’s the source of our conflict that lets America’s huge porn industry turn its objectified male demi-gods into, well, objectified male demi-gods — before tossing them on the trash heap? And what are the ways to break out of the cycle, become a recognizable and cash-generating image within the porn pantheon, and therefore last forever?
American gays love our porn stars, but we also think they are less than human. Of course, we know they are MORE than human, too. Wouldn’t anyone be superhuman to be able to have so much sex, all the time, whenever he wants, with whomever he wants? Why do we pay, a LOT, to watch them have sex with one another while still hating them in real life for, you know, “doing porn?”
Are gay porn stars as exploited as we think female porn stars are in American culture? Are they lonely, starving country boys come to the big city to make it big, or at least become backup dancers for Lady Ga-ga, only to find themselves turning tricks on Santa Monica Boulevard until they are ‘rescued’ by a slimy porn producer posing as a ’sports modeling agent?’ And then they are made a STAR? Or do these men make a conscious decision at some point: “I’m gonna be a gay porn star!” Who raises their little boy with that ambition, anyway?
Does our sex-crazed, sex-phobic, sex-manic culture create gay porn stars, or do gay porn stars feed America’s addiction to porn, gay division? Do gay Americans need porn? Do we hate porn? Do we love our porn?
If we love it, why don’t we marry it? (pace, Pee-Wee) And are relationships impossible for gay porn stars? I mean, who wants to be in a relationship with someone who’s so hot he has sex with other guys all day, for money? Who doesn’t want to???
In a format that grows on the viewer, John Roecker has interviewed some big names in the business about the business, and about their business. The questions I’ve posed in my intro aren’t all answered in this revealing series of fun but sometimes dark episodes about gay porn stars, starring gay porn stars. But, the questions (and the answers) were initially deemed too hot for Amazon to handle, so stay around for ninety minutes, starting right now, for some swell answers about questions you may not know you needed to know the answers to!
