Bobbie Gentry — Ode to Billie Joe, BBC Live, 1968.
What’s on your mind?
Greetings from a sunburnt Sanssouci, and thanks for posting one of my favorite songs! But what exactly WERE they throwing off the bridge???
hey sanssouci — glad ya liked it. the wiki for the song has a few clues but tis a mystery for sure
how ya doing tonight?
Hi Suz. Hope all is well in your village.
hey dearie — finally cooled down today to the high 70′s instead of high 80′s and low 90′s
how your arm rehab coming along?
Murray the K said it was the fetus of their aborted child.
Rehab is going well. Ouch. But well. Driving easily again. Actually went out to dinner with my friends this evening. Nice to be getting back to real life. But I sure did enjoy my down time….. nurturing my inner hermit. :)
hey blue — how’s la county tonight?
I think they were throwing their sins away. Because I like that idea. When I was a 13 yr old ironing shirts for a dime and practicing putting makeup on that way…….back then, I thought they were throwing an illegitimate baby off the bridge.
I chalk that up to my John Birch influenced So Cal years at an impressionable age. Never underestimate the drama in a young girl’s mind!
Now that you posted Ode, I shall lie awake all night wondering about its meaning!
driving easy is huge! hopefully you will find the proper mix of work and downtime when you return to work and don’t overdo
Ah hah! Murray the K also has all the drama in his head.
Aloha, Suz and lln pups…!
hey openhope — how’s the north puget sound tonight? tis a puzzle wrapped in an enigma and buried in mystery … or something like that :)
tis a song that always takes me back to hot summer nights as my bff and i pondered the mysteries of what the fork was thrown off that blasted bridge
aloha tut — how’s paradise tonight?
Another dank and dour day and nite…!
It’s okay. Today was “deal with the multiple bureacracies one has to deal with when one’s mother has just moved into assisted living” day — very tedious and exhausting. Sometimes one has to do a lot of work to get just a nugget of result.
Just got back from a few days in the DC area, where I went for a family wedding. They had three copies of my pb book at Politics and Prose and they let me sign them! Also got to see the Vietnam Memorial — had always wanted to see that.
but your better half is back so that should help lift your spirits
A mystery or a perfect lyric. Everyone and their best friend was talking about “What was thrown”.
Glad you’re feeling better.
and yay!!! how forking kewl to find your pb book there.
i’ve seen the mini touring wall that goes around the country. it is very powerful even at a smaller scale. one day i will make it to dc and cross several items off my bucket list
Hey, Tut, per Hag’s thread, is your island self-sufficient (food, water, energy, etc) for the population? My concern for the chaos that is evolving is that we all need to be in places of sufficiency…. and, of course, that’s impossible.
well at least according to my Mom, the poor thing always had to tend to her miserable sunburned child in spite of her warnings :)
Today I swear by the Aloe Vera
you have my sympathies
truth! i’ve always wondered what was in the lyrics that were cut — just as i wondered about the ending that was cut by the editors when they published the novel gone with the wind
hey ellie — how ya doing tonight?
I was a great Murray the K fan as a proto-adolescent.
I preferred the cleaner engagement/wedding ring theory – at the time.
Now I think it was a bitty baby birthed in secret. Who gets a fetus from the aborter?
Thanks, blue. Recently my brother called me for help on arranging some medical appointment for our dad from his assisted living. My brother didn’t know where to start…. but I’ve been at this for some time. It only took me 7 calls to get everyone on board! My brother had thought it would take 13 calls, so he was wildly impressed….. and grateful.
Very cool news about your book. Our family visited the wall in 2005. My husband’s a Viet Nam vet, I’m a citizen of that era. It was so emotional, so complicated emotionally.
The small statue across the way that honored women vets was a beautiful sculpture, but obviously a side gesture.
(I miss your dives – a sleek jack-knife woulda been nice:)
…is your island self-sufficient (food, water, energy, etc) for the population? No where near enough, Dearie, but, we do have the ability to do so rapidly, if the proverbial sh*t hits the fan…!
My attitude toward DC now is so different from when I was a kid, and completely star-struck. While there’s still something impressive about it, now it’s where the sausage is made, and not always tasty sausage at that.
Cool! It’s a great book even if I can no longer partake in the ambrosia of the gods aka PB
…a sleek jack-knife woulda been nice:)
*heh* My Bulgarian Uncle might even appreciate it, Ellie…! ;-)
Yes, the amount of scutwork involved is really something. Well done.
Dank and dour days are dastardly. My deep sympathy.
my dives still look like this — legs not completely vertical and i splash :(
Thank you for the sympathy
- I’m an Aloe Vera fan myself, but didn’t bring any along. Dumb! The sun is a lot more intense here (Central Cal Coast) than where I live in Germany. But, no matter, I will simply milk it for all the commiseration it’s worth!
i wanna see the smithsonian museums… and i would love to catch the cherry blossoms blooming
The sun is a lot more intense here (Central Cal Coast) than where I live in Germany
Guten Abend, Sanssouci…! How’s y’alls Solar expansion doing…? ;-)
central ca coast is gorgeous! so much eye candy!!!
Glad you are enjoying the Central Coast….. we’re having some pretty weather! Enjoy the Mexican food and the sea food, too!
There’s also a statue of three (male) US soldiers in Vietnam, one of whom is black. Both that statue and the one of the nurses are well done, so they didn’t irritate me as much as I thought they would.
I wanted to follow the ranger-guided tour of the Wall, but my ex-g.f., with whom I went to the wedding, was not going to stay out in the heat and humidity a second longer than she had to and turned thumbs down.
We also saw the grandiose and pretentious WW II memorial. What an eyesore.
Also, when we were sitting in Lafayette Park, just north of the White House, a black guy on one of the benches (homeless? not sure) kept looking back at the White House and yelling “Some heavy shit is gonna come down.” He may be right — we’ll just have to wait and see.
coconut oil, slathered
That must be oppressive to not be able to eat PB after you developed a taste for it. But more and more, people are developing allergies in general and peanut allergies in particular later in life.
Is there a directory so that one can find the names of young men they used to know? I’ve wanted to see the wall, but I’m afraid I’d just burst into tears. Such a waste of young men…. and women. Not to mention the people whose country we didn’t want to be a domino.
Not sure I’ve ever seen the cherry blossoms — that would be magical.
I blame Atkins! It is fun to know the author of the definitive book on it tho :)
Jeez, I wander around muttering that a lot myself. “Some heavy shit is going to come down”. He’s definitely right.
Well done sir, what else can you do?! hee
i’ve heard so much about them — i know portland has nice cherry trees blooming. i worry that if i were to go and catch them blooming, i would be disappointed in dc’s after all the hype i’ve heard about them
They have directories there, both paper and electronic. I found it oddly moving myself, and I didn’t know anyone who bought the farm in Vietnam.
Actually, my skin is no longer as lobster-colored as a few hours ago. This region is breathtakingly beautiful, especially given the present weather.
The Atkins diet? How/why?
And thanks for your kind words :)
He may be a prophet, like Tiresias. Or the porter knocking at Hell’s gate in MacBeth.
Yes, there’s several directories and volunteers helping to find names. It’s not even a matter of bursting into tears, it’s too overwhelming for that. The tears stream, no one was losing it, the grief is palpable. Imo, “losing it in grief” is a false concept we’ve been trained to. To teach us to suck it up rather than to honor our true emotions.
I don’t think you will be disappointed — the setting, around the Tidal Basin and the Jefferson Memorial, is iconic.
The Natural History museum was our favorite. Especially the gem and crystal section. Nature’s bling and our National Booty.
“Some heavy shit is going to come down”.
Let slip the Dogs of War…! Kharma’s a real Biotch…! 8-(
yay! (but continue to milk it for all its worth)
i lived for 5 years in the santa cruz mts at the north end of monterey bay — it has a magical beauty that still draws me. unfortunately, i could no longer afford to live in ca after i retired so i moved to oregon.
They tell you no peanuts or peanut butter for two weeks, so dutifully I obliged and when I started eating the peanuts (no peanut butter then, sugar and all, yanno) I got itchy right away. Had I known I never ever would have done that diet. I ate peanut butter every single day of my life (picky eater). But no point dwelling on it…. Pizza’s nice (lol)
But you’re right, people are much more allergicky these days, it almost seems as if our immune systems don’t have much else to do, what with antibiotics and vaccines and all.
Oh man openhope my faves! (see also American Museum of Natural History NYC)
i sure would like to find aqua buddha and the latest incarnation of fanne fox in the tidal basin but i think might only be a pipe dream
Ain’t that the truth.
Let slip the Men Of War. Mortals all.
i love nature’s bling!!! dana came down sat for a short visit and gave me two of the geo-magnets she’s been making. i’ve got schist on my fridge!!!
Beautiful, indeed – hiya Suzzz
I remember the Fann(i?)e Fox episode — the Argentine Firecracker, yes? — well, Wilbur Mills had his ways and means, I guess.
Just be careful – make sure the schitz doesn’t hit the fan
heya ppd — how ya doing tonight?
Just had an interesting phone conversation with a friend whose 88-year-old dad keeps getting called by scammers. It’s that old rigamarole about the grandson who has to be bailed out of jail, and the caller says he/she can only do this if 5000 $ are immediately wired to such-and-such an account. Is there any way to apprehend these crooks? Fortunately. my friend’s dad is clear as a bell and just tells them to quit calling. Any hints on what can be done? Thanks everyone
why can’t that happen to aqua buddah? its not like i ask for much…
hahahaha i love schist jokes
If Hillary finds a way to blow it again, that may be President Aqua Buddah.
Tired – it’s been a tough week
We used to rock hound for garnets in Colorado. I’ve been up to my knees in schist, just too focused on the bling to realize it!
which is why he needs a fannie fox
sorry to hear that ppd — i hope the weekend is better for you dood
I <3 the mica schist
Openhope have you seen this tumblr?
i’ve got schist with small garnets… another gift from dana
Pleeze dog, let Hillary find a way to blow it again…………….
This LOTE crapola is getting mighty old, bw…! 8-(
Edit: Not directed at you, bw, but in general…!
Does being up to one’s knees in schist make one a schistophrenic?
It does. No schist.
*snort* that’s one i’ve not heard before….. tis a keeper (which means i’m gonna steal it sanssouci)
Very cool. We actually live in one of the places in the world known for amethyst and we had a public area where you could take the kids and hunt crystals. It was awesome. Unfortunately, it was county land and wiser minds allocated it for gravel. fucking white men
Duly noted; just making small talk.
And in response to openhope@77:
I have complete faith in HRC’s ability to not close the sale. Not that we’ll get anyone better when she tanks.
that blows! i’ve always loved amethyst — even tho my birthstone is an opal
So, Suzanne, schistophrenia is SLATED for today ! Double pun! I win the toaster!
Quite possibly. Though it might give one a Schist Complex. ” Peter,Peter, I can see your house from here.”
Boy, there’s a joke that dates you!
*groan* metamorphically speaking, of course
you are such a schist disturber *ducking*
Suz, I’ve been puzzling over something, and was wondering if you could help me out with it:
Who put the bomp in the bomp bah bomp bah bomp? And who, for that matter, put the ram
in the rama lama ding dong?
fuck! you did it to me again blue!!! i fall for that fuckery every fucking time dood
I’m bad. I can’t help it. God knows I’ve tried to stop, but I just can’t. There must be a 12-step program for people like me.
Opals are my favorites. I’ve got a thin sliver of Australian Fire opal in my treasure box. Next to a silk worm cocoon.
No idea what you do with things like this.
Black opals are just beautiful. Regular opals are just like honkie opals in comparison.
*heh* Oh my, not again, Suz…? ;-)
oooooo ya put them in a treasure box openhope
*glaring at blue*
12 step fuckery program. Hello, I’m *********, I’m a fuckery addict.
my father went to Australia on a business trip -way back when- and come home with a (srsly) peanut butter jar full of fire opal chips. I have no idea what to do with my share but they do sparkle!
Bad to the Bone
“My name is bluewombat.”
I have fantasies about doing some sort of textile wall piece incorporating all my strange natural stuff. However, I’m afraid it would reinforce the concept of my possible schistophrenia.
i think it would be schistilating
Well, time for me to eat my freshly buttercream iced, devilsfood cake…! ;-)
ZZ Top always reminds me of the Smith Brothers.
Well. Kinder. I’m signing out for tonight. Sweet dreams, all!
Good night, Tut.
That was a good one.
oooo that’s just downright evil tut — i want a slice
g’nite tut — happy dreams
Oh bummer, I just gained 2 pounds reading that.
g’nite sanssouci — happy dreams (and don’t forget to get sunscreen)
thanks blue :)
i should take token out before he starts doing his ‘not happy’ dance by the door
g’nite all — happy dreams
Yup, the hirsuteness.
Having said that, I think I’m running out of steam. Thanks for hostessing and for putting up with me.
Good night, all. Thank you for a very pleasant evening.
Hope tomorrow is a good day.
Well, your fellow schistophreniacs will appreciate it. DO IT!
