The one thing I’ve always valued most about Firedoglake and its community is a commitment to principle over partisan allegiances. The overarching principle which drives FDL is to find tangible ways to improve policy in this country. This means not wallowing in powerless cynicism or blind loyalty to a political party.
FDL has stood directly against President Obama (Chelsea Manning), supported Obama’s position even when Obama didn’t actually support it (public option) and highlight issues where the President is advocating for real reform (Smarter Sentencing Act). Where we put our efforts depends only on what is right and what leverage points exist to promote positive change.
We don’t reflexively defend the Democratic party or inherently dismiss Republicans, Libertarians, or Conservatives, depending on the issue. FDL is not afraid to cover issues that have the support of one political party, multiple parties or are completely against the entire political establishment.
While this had made FDL remarkably effective for its small size, it doesn’t often make us many friends. FDL has only been able to do what it does because of the generous support of its community and right now FDL needs your help. Almost constant Denial of Service attack over recent weeks have produced significant tech bills. If you value the unique role FDL has played please consider helping out.
