I was recently disappointed by this bit of music news…
A planned Off-Broadway musical celebrating Janis Joplin has been tabled for the time being.
Rolling Stone reports (via the Associated Press) that A Night With Janis Joplin, a musical featuring the classic rock singer’s biggest hits that was slated for an opening this week at the Gramercy Theatre in New York, has been postponed indefinitely. Producers are citing “production issues” as the culprit for the delay.
A timetable for its debut has not yet been released. Ticket refunds have been offered.
The production stars Mary Bridget Davies as Joplin. The actress previously portrayed her in the 2006 Off-Broadway musical Love, Janis and toured with the singer’s old band, Big Brother & the Holding Company, the same year.
In addition to Joplin’s more beloved tunes, A Night With Janis Joplin also features “I’m Gonna Rock My Way to Heaven,” an unreleased song written for the singer by Jerry Ragovoy in 1970 before her death.
After preview runs at the Lyceum Theatre last September, the musical opened on Broadway last October before moving to Gramercy, which is in the Chelsea district of New York, for its current run.
What’s on your mind tonite…?
