Isn’t it a pity – Concert for George
Today is George Harrison‘s 71st birthday…! Happy Birthday and R.I.P…!
The Rutles ride again…
What’s on your mind tonite…?
Hey, CT. I’m working up a storm and also looking out for a 96 year old dad. Busy. Life is such an interesting adventure. Jump in and go for it!
Aloha, Dearie…! How is your Dad doing…?
Hi CT, Dearie,
On a Tolstoy jag. Finished 15 hours of War & Peace. Now on Anna Karenina.
He’s doing well. He’s now past the depression phase and is working his rehab with enthusiasm. His spirits are good and his humor is infectious! I think there is something about loving life, dontcha know?!
I have always admired him, but I admire him even more now.
Aloha, eCAHN…! How’s the Hudson tonite…?
Btw, I just scolded ya on the Robin thread…! ;-)
I remember the days when I had time to read, and I look forward to finding those days again. So glad you are enjoying ….. do it for all of us!
I love the fact that you are spending quality time with him, I’m sure that buoys his spirits too…! *g*
Aloha, wmd…! How’s the weather doing…?
Who would have imagined?! My neo-con twin brother, whom I have commented on in the past, is just doing wonderfully! I am so proud of my twin brother for stepping up and just being so real and so caring and so darned right amazingly wonderful! This is new to us, caring for an elderly father, but we are all doing right by our dad. Good on all of us!
Gonna rain soon.
Bike is fubar. But not for long.
Here’s a great tribute clip… Brainwashed…
What is the robin thread?
Uh-oh, What happened to your bike…?
The Robin Hood tax thread…!
I’ve read them both twice. W&P when I went to Russia in 1998. Both in HS, and AK again sometime earlier. Watching videos now. Always loved Russian culture & can’t resist now that it’s being vilified by U.S.
They are being stupid. As I said, mustt be a Cass Sunstein infiltration. It’s hard to imagine anyone being so politically tone deaf unless it’s on purpose to undermine the project. Imagine what hay the oppo can make of the name.
Give Me Love…
I don’t know much about Russia. My daughter had a half-year in St. Petersburg in the late 1980s….. she remembers living on very little food, but came back quite round. She’d planned on studying Russia forever, but her experience left he less interested. She’s gone on to be a professor of political sciences but not with a specialty in Russia. I always laugh that she said that after her semester there, people were always asking her if she was Latvian.
Two of the six magnets lining the flywheel disintegrated, damaging the stator.
Dennis Trainor is not a Cass Sunstein infiltrator, nor many of the backers of the push, ma cheri…!
Why were they asking if she were Latvian?
*ouch* That’s major surgery, and big bucks in replacement parts…!
If he’s not a Cass tool, he’s a close approximation. Judging by his post, not by anything I know about him, which is nothing.
Simply because she was a blue-eyed blonde round little girl! She could have, of course, been asked if she were Lithuanian, but she spoke Russian.
Not that bad on the wrenching… and I’m hoping to find used parts (except for gasket).
Or, in retrospect, perhaps they asked if she were Estonian!
All Those Years Ago…
Russian must be difficult because of the cyrillic alphabet. I was advised to learn it before I went, but time did not allow.
Found our way around the Moscow subway despite that. First 2-3 letters were sufficient to identify the station. Next problem was which side, as the lines we used, the platforms were between the tracks. There was always a man in uniform, I pointed to where we were going on the map and he pointed to which side to board the train.
Bit of confusion over crossing lines, where stations have different names. But soon figured that out.
My daughter loved her time in Russia, though she did think that tomato/cucumber/sour cream got old quite quickly. I actually thought, as a feminist, that she might be interested to go back for more study, but she’d had enough of that. She’s had a lovely career since.
Food was not good when we were there. High class food was ridiculously expensive, even for American. Which alerted me to impending crash. We were there in June, bubble burst in September.
Stayed in expensive hotel (expense account for several days, but not whole time) so couldn’t figure out how to get good regular Russian food.
What has your daughter’s career been?
Speaking of some cool feminism happening in the MENA, from the origins of the Arab Spring, Tunisia, which also just adopted the first Arabic Constitution that clearly enunciates that women are equals…!
Tunisia: First female presidential candidate presents herself
I laughed about how my daughter managed while in Russia…. she was a good sport but she was also hungry! It really was tomatoes/cucumbers/sour cream/potatoes. She went to a pizza parlor once in Leningrad and … life is such fun!… ran into a high school friend who was touring Russia. My daughter lost the potato weight and has gone on to be a professor of political theory.
It Don’t Come Easy…
Won’t it be lovely if in the USA, USA, USA that women become equals?!
2014 and women are declared equal in some law that won’t be enforced.
Raising the age old Q of whether lip service is better than no service at all.
Just as long as it’s not Hillary, M’dear…! I’m tired of all the NeoLiberal crapola…! 8-(
They swatted down the push for Koranic law…! ;-)
We learn too little too late.
For example, our room was cleaned appropriately but when I got back, talked to a reporter friend who went there during Soviet times. Friend brought plenty of LARGE size panty hose in orange & purple & left one pair on the unmade bed each morning before she went out. Room was spotless when friend returned.
Friend also told me of several restaurants we should have tried but they weren’t in the guide book and it was too late.
If we’d been there more than 1/2 week, we would have had time to figure it out.
Did have fantastic experience flying from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Left my pocket book on wrong side of the scanner and went marching forward without knowing of my mistake. Was called back a minute or two later to claim it, everything intact. I couldn’t believe my luck nor passenger & staff honesty.
I don’t know about you, but I find myself kind of embarrassed that I thought my society was on the same track. Back in the 70s I actually had my husband by my side at a feminist talk in, for god’s sake, Cincinnati, Ohio. It all went to hell. My daughters are having to re-pave the road. This is not what I anticipated. I never would have imagined that state after state would vote to reduce women’s rights or vote against human beings in general. It’s all been so surprising.
As I’ve typed before, Sharia was gender advanced in its day. In 600s, declared women 2/3 of man in court, inheritance.
Women were chattel in West until late in 19C.
If fundamentalist Islam weren’t underwritten by Saudis, A-A empire & all other known evils, it would probably still be gender advanced vs. west, having the political space to develop by analogy to prior traditions.
My issues are pay & promotion. I don’t give a FF about assault or control over my organs.
Yet debate is confined to abortion, rape. Those influence minority of women.
Did you notice how problems that affect ALL women aren’t even talked about?
I agree with what you say, in fact, ‘Political Islam’ is largely pushed by the Conservative Sunni(MB) and/or the well-funded rabid Salafist/Wahabbists…!
I understand that advancement influences ALL women, but I also know that control over one’s reproduction is specific to ALL women. If we do not look out for the women on the lowest rung of the ladder, then what’s the point? Really. Big Picture.
Good evening CT. Hiya Dearie, eCAHN and wmd..! Sunny and warm and today in slc, got up to 61 (over 10 degrees above normal). Enough to give ya spring fever, I tells ya..!!
Like the U.S., or any other “western” nation, conservatives crowd out the real problems that, if resolved, would go a long way in getting women out of the pink collar ghetto.
Particularly discouraging is the way women themselves have been secunded into the abortion/rape duopoly, instead of the real problem. :-(
music choice tonight was great Tut. I’d never heard those 2 up there, or seen that Rutles clip. I kept going with the George concert. Nice to hear Paulie sing a couple of those. Reminds how well G+P’s voices harmonized.
Russian studies have always been an interest of mine. I tried to watch and read W+P. Never got thru them both. But loved Anna Karenina. And loveloveloveDostoevsky – big in my world. Read 6-7 of his. And Checkov, penetrating in other ways. But that’s all just intro. ha!
Hi past. How’s your water supply holding? I’m in south central CA, and we are really, really concerned about water supplies. We think we’ll have rain tomorrow. A rarity around here!
Educate me! What would bring women out of the pink collar ghetto?
Not so. Reproduction issues are specific from puberty to menopause, less than half of female’s life. Furthermore, majority of women are not affected.
Not saying every woman shouldn’t have same same choices. But should spend political capital on advancing economic well being of poor women rather than their internal organs. If they weren’t poor, they’d have choices.
I.e., What is the “real problem”?
Aloha, past…! It was another gorgeous day, with a light evening shower to cool us down here…!
Got ideas for bringing poor women out of poverty…..? Education is a fine idea, but I don’t know how to keep girls in school. I’m willing to be educated……….for sure!
Aloha, k-pop…! Had to pay tribute on his bday…! ;-)
Was a masochist enthusiast of Dostoyevsky when I was a depressed teen.
Listened to audio book of C&P a few years ago, to refresh my memory & see if I could still glom onto it. Yep. Understood it entirely, though reacted in a more balanced way than half century ago.
Aloha, Suz…! How’s your hamlet tonite…?
I thought the old ways were almost extinct, too. This is probably way too simplistic, but can make a case for KOCH and the Bircher’s. It’s their tactics, organization, method, means and motive. They and they’re allies are treating the nation like LA/Orange counties in the early-mid ’60′s. Black and White sections of town, enforced by cops and courts and city councils. Stop and frisk and mass incarceration for the blacks and fear of god and evangelist pronouncement for the whites. Mixed with a whole lotta capitalism.
What Is Life…?
it’s lovely reading the convo tonight here!
and that’s right, I forgot all about it.
35 tonight and the cold cold air isn’t really here yet – have an east wind blowing in from the gorge bringing in all that cold air from the cascades and high desert but the really cold air comes down from canada this weekend. on the plus side, it was sunny today but oh that wind had a bite to it
Hi Dearie. Right now our snowpack is below normal. December was great with lots of storms but hardly any storms in January. February’s been in between those two extremes but we’re still below norm. Expecting some precipitation this weekend, fingers crossed. :-)
Hope you get a good rain, you guys in CA really need it.
Yep. I hate being blind-sided, but such seems to be the case. I’m glad I’m old and that I don’t have to fight the same old goddamned fight again. The youngsters can take it up…. or not.
Govt programs. Rather than kicking them out of elementary & HS ed (worse for black boys who are put into prison but that’s a topic for another night), improve it.
One of my nieces-in-law got special grant for drama in now ghetto (Barbara Streisand’s) HS in Brooklyn in 1990s. Produced Midsummer Night’s Dream, Oedipus Rex. Leading lady in former was teen who had to go home to care for younger sibs & 1/2 sibs, missing rehearsals. Leading lady (Jocasta) in latter was pregnant teen.
Of course, all those special programs that work have been trashed by NCLB.
Brrr…! More snow expected this weekend…?
Govt in my pants is NOT the problem. The problem is pay & promotion.
Pay & promotion.
Get the message or should I repeat it 100 times with white chalk on a blackboard.
Hi Suz. Are you over your bad cold and feeling healthy or at least back to normal?
I’m not sure I understand your message, but I’m all about helping teens to NOT procreate so naively. When the Right goes after birth control and abortion, I have no understanding of their motives. As a Social Worker juvenile probation officer, I wanted my girls to not get pregnant and my boys to not impregnate. When a kid came back and said, “I listened to you and didn’t have my first kid til I was a grown up…” well, I was glad for them. They had a chance!
How, my dear blog-friend, do you make Pay and Promotion work? Give me a clue!!!
at most a rain/snow mix depending how the storm comes in and when we get the precip. for sure anything below 1,000 feet is a tossup. march is gonna come in like a lion
still have a bit of the cough crop up (mainly when laughing) but otherwise am doing much better — thanks for asking :)
LLN pups be fired up tonight. Must go back an read more. Heres an album to stick on a back burner http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DeOSLNbhfg
Santana. Indie Arie,yo-yo ma.
The problem is that we’ve starved all of our Federal, State, and City/Co.’s Bureaucracies…! We need more Ag Inspectors, Dog Catchers, SEC regulators, and, for gawd’s sake, more Teachers…!
Former teacher, here! Decades of attacks on teachers have weeded out anyone thinking of being a teacher. Who needs the abuse?!
Aloha, homeroid…! How’s the 49th state tonite…?
Reality here: Women who control their reproductive life (without being nuns, for example) have more ability to advance in work life…. toward better pay and promotion.
It’s not about getting pregnant or not getting pregnant. That’s the red herring.
It’s about providing alternatives so that girls decide for themselves that they don’t want to have babies at such a young age.
I don’t understand the psychology from personal life. Self-define (in one of several ways) by my intellectual, not biological, accomplishments.
According to TV, and other info sources, girls of limited economic choices, self-define by man protection and having baby who is dependent on her.
If she were convinced of more & better choices, she would not succumb so readily to blandishments of horny boys.
Returning to where I started this evening, Tolstoy W&P & AK are about (among other matters) changing society to expand choice, via land ownership, better health, more independence opportunities than they had before.
What’s complicated or confusing about that.
Don’t need SCOTUS to defend Roe v. Wade if women/girls are self-empowered.]
I do hear that a lot!
and have liked all the female bosses I’ve had
Talking about it must come first. Meaning moving assault & abortion off center stage as red herring issues.
Lily Ledbetter was one vehicle. If women ever get close to realizing how much they’ve been had, I’ll come up with Step Two.
Now figuring out how to replace abortion & assault (a&a?) off of “feminist” agenda without POing other women.
Yes, empower girls. Go for it! Nice and important idea.
Good thing i know when to keep my mouth shut. Stellar day today but tonight it’s the wonderful freezing rain. Cant wait to drive first thing in the morn.
None of the 99s should count on big Gov’t for doing anything to help us, we are on our own.
A friend of mine from VetsForPeace was operated on today for melanoma on his right ear and cheek, will know more tomorrow. He was staioned at Camp Lejeune in late 70′s early 80′s where the water wells were contaminated by toxic TCE. His son has a heart condition that’s been linked to that particvular toxin.
be careful out there!
Wouldn’t it be nice if all of us stood up for the troubled? I do keep my pitch fork sharpened….virtually. I am continually surprised that the general populace isn’t looking out for their own parents, siblings, offspring. Dontcha know?
i’ll include your friend on my prayer list past… i’m sending him warm positive thoughts and prayers for an easy, speedy, and full recovery
freezing rain is the worst. yuck. ugh. feel for ya dood
It’s ok it’s a cab and they are expendable. Thats why they hire us so as not to put their truck in the ditch. Folks around here aint that dumb….well some aint.
I’m currently pushing the system to look out for my dad as he wends his way through a convalescent hospital. It’s ‘interesting’ how having a bit of ‘power’ makes for help in getting him proper treatment, adequate therapy, and such.
I’ve liked all (but one) male RAs I’ve hired.
Superior to female RAs I’ve employed. Must think about why.
Defensive is first descriptive that comes to mind.
One was shared with a man, who claimed (incorrectly since he was a jerk), that she did what I asked and ignored what he asked.
Another, who I didn’t share with another senior analyst, was S. Korean ethnic. Had attended all the best schools, but hated them for same reason I did, focus was on grade grubbing not learning.
Sang Choi’s chip on her shoulder prevented her from effectualizing her potential.
Again, I was too inexperienced with the cultural, emotional, intellectual issues to improve them during the two years she worked for me.
A third I was afraid to hire because her father was a known Harvard econ prof. I’ve often reconsidered that decision in light of my own inferiority complex. :-)
*wow* What a clusterfuck that turned out to be…! Everybody is still passing the buck on responsiblity, and/or even rectifiying the problem(s)…! 8-(
My point being that it is not different from trying to make it in middle school or high school or getting into college or making it in a job…. sometimes it helps to have backing.
Charity & family are partial solutions. Both don’t work as they should for floor under all humans.
Victorian U.K. Gilded Age U.S.
Thus need govt.
Congrats, Dearie, on the 99…! ;-)
Yes, Trichloroethylene is one of the ingredients in Agent Orange. It’s just one of several toxins found in wells at Camp Lajeune. Caused by ‘storage’ of toxic materials on base. Covered up by the gov’t until finally admitting it after 30 yrs.
Same thing at El Toro (marine base) in California. El Toro was closed in 1999 and auctioned off in 2005, without any clean-up ever taking place.
Oh yes, if you know how to work the system, you can muddle through.
Goal is to make it obvious that voluntarism does not create human rights. Only govts can.
I must be having trouble with acronyms, today.
What’s an RA? Not resident assistant, not reality acclimatologist >wink<…
One more tune… All things must pass…
Thanks, CT, for a lively LateLate. Colorful dreams, All.
My brother-in-law had many health problems the last years.
But, he was one of the first to have heart surgery as a child, in the ’50′s.
So his whole life was carefully monitored, in ways, because of his heart. When they moved to Colorado, there were several specialists who grew up around him, as things failed or he had problems. And because he was this special patient, they all had interest in how he turned out.
Sweet dreams, Dearie…!
Love the tunes tonight, CT, Thanks..!
Sleep well, Dearie.!
Reality acclimatologist! could that be my bartender?
ahhh, that could explain some things fer sure!
Had a friend who was exposed, VN era and later got hypoglocemic diabetes traceable to exposure… took 30 years to get a settlement. But he did.
ha! maybe… I’ll never tell
Glad ya liked’em, past…!
Oh snap…! ;-)
I shall bid ya another fond adieu…! Mahalo for the great company and I hope to see y’all on Suz’s tomorrow…!
Aloha Oe…! *g*
Many vets, and active duty, have been exposed to toxic chemicals in VN era and ever since. I have friends and neighbors who’ve died from cancer due to exposure during VN era.
Sorry to hear about your friend. Problem is the effects usually don’t show up until years after, even decades after. Not a lot different than civilian population, though, when you think about industrial landfills and storage sites.
Good night and sleep well, CT..!
he was ok as long as he had a dose of sweet somethin, now and then.
In his late ’50′s he moved to a buddhist monastery in Saipan, way out in the pacific ocean.
Mail goes thru Hong Kong and needed HK postage… he told me, “I eat mangoes whenever I want!”
What an interesting life..! Hope he lives a long one.
Got to turn in, early morning meeting. See ya soon at another lln.
