Buddy Miles — Runaway Child, live in Finland, 1971.
What’s on your mind?
ZED in the USA!
hey wmd — how ya doing tonight?
I’m just here for a drive by. Have had swollen lymph nodes under my left jaw for a 3 days, getting extra rest, hot compresses and lots of fluids. Weird that I don’t have any symptoms of infection besides the swollen nodes – no toothache, no congestion, no fever… swelling has been diminishing.
Looks like I do a second on site next Monday or Tuesday. HR feedback confirmed my inside contact’s information – team liked me, felt I was a good fit for culture and team. They want a better assessment of my technical chops (I think to decide between Sr Perf engineer and Principal Perf engineer). I’m studying a few hours a day until I go back in.
yike — hope that is the extent of it for ya wmd — this bronchitis i’ve had has kicked my arse
and YAY!!! so its not between you and another person — its what position would be best for you?
I will feed the jukebox though.
ooooo not heard that before – i sure like her voice
I could blow it… but HR told me before the on site that they had interviewed 2 people last year (position listed end of October) and turned them down. That I’m being told they like me is a very good sign.
indeed it is wmd — very encouraging
It has been cold today, but not bitter. Jack Frost visited me this morning, but it is up to 10 degrees with chance of snow right now.
which do ya prefer – them changes with santana or the version with jimi
hey ce — did the city shut down like last time or is this one not as bad?
WTH, here’s another quarter for the jukebox.
head bopping dance music dood!!!
Hi Gang. Suzanne, I hope that you are feeling better/stronger. Bronchitis is a bitch. Be well!
NOT at all. Just an ordinary day in Cleveland.
hey dearie — how’s the ‘nard tonight? i’m finally feeling like i’m over the hump of this forker — went out twice yesterday – the first for a latte and the second to pick up some sushi. twas the first time i wanted food since i got sick. had zero appetite until i got hit with the sushi craving.
yay! last time it was so unfair that you had to report to work when everything else was shut down. at least you are not the only one going to work in the snow
Eating again is a great sign! Glad you are better.
All’s well in the ‘nard. I worked in Santa Maria yesterday, and on the drive north there was the most remarkable pink sunrise in my rear view mirror all the way to Santa Barbara. Just lovely. I know that such colorful skies often mean pollution, but I just can’t get over the beauty.
This winter we have freezing temps and little snow. Lake Erie is frozen, and that has an effect on the snow accumulation. Anyway … cold as ice, but we have a new furnace/air conditioner — hahaha last summer we were cool as cucumbers.
buddy miles, buddy guy, and jack bruce
i love pink skies…. so pretty and soft
i don’t do sunrises but i do love sunsets… my favorite are the pink to purple ones – watching the colors shift and change.
I always smile when I read about your enjoyment of your heater/AC….it’s the little things that make life more enjoyable! I remember when I got AC. I have no cross breeze and we had a hot, hot summer. I was replacing a 40 year old heating system and my dad helped me pay to add AC. I don’t use it much, but when I need it I’m thrilled beyond measure that I have it!
Suzanne, you saw my morning window with Jack Frost nipping at my nose!
so you are not getting any lake effect snow?
that was a great picture on facebook :)
Hiya Suzzz, CE, Dearie
Thanks love! What could be better than this.
hiya ppd — how ya doing tonight?
No! Lake Erie is frozen. Done.
Good, thanks – been busy, busy, busy. How are you and your family?
Hello PPDCUS! Nice to see you tonight.
I lived in Chicago for years, not far from the lake. The frozen shore always amazed me! I gotta admit that I was pretty thrilled to move back to California …. the Pacific is cold and rowdy, but I love it. And it doesn’t freeze~
so the lake has to be unfrozen to produce lake effect snow?
we are doing ok, thanks ppd
Thanks – great to see you, too. Everyone well with you, I hope?
Yes. So they say.
Hey PPD….. what’s going on with you?
i did not know that… thanks
2014. I’m going to be a grandmother to a baby boy mid June, and mother of the bride in April.
Zach Tomanelli, an FDL member, was on Jeopardy tonight. He finished second, but the point is that he made it onto the show. For that, he deserves a tip of the ol’ hat.
You are going to have the BEST year! Weddings are so wonderful….. and grandbabies are divine~!
hey tt — wasn’t that great!!! i can’t wait to see you on jeopardy — when do ya face the next step?
We (family includes many members) are SO EXCITED.
Hi Tammany Tiger. Did you finally get your wife ‘officialized’ for healthcare? My brother has been working on his wife’s sign up for weeks. Not successful yet….. and dreadful expense. We’ll see what finally works out.
Yes. The key to lake-effect snow is the temperature disparity in favor of the lake. The colder it gets, the less snowfall potential.
I grew up in the NYC area, where we’d get occasional nor’easters in the winter. These storms carry a huge amount of moisture from the ocean. Many bring torrential rain, but some dump huge amounts of snow. A few years ago, the town I grew up in got hit with 30 inches of snow in less than two days.
as you should be!!!
I remember one winter in Chicago where there was so much snow that I always had to go out with the kids lest one of ‘em get lost in a snow drift! And, oh, the putting on of all the snow gear for a few minutes of romp… talk about cabin fever!
That’s a lotta naches, CE – enjoy!
the putting on of the snow gear
Yes, we did. She finally managed to create an account, apply for a premium tax credit, and enroll in a plan. However, the insurance company was slow to recognize that we’d signed up (we have different last names) and we wound up hand-delivering a check to a Blue Cross/Blue Shield office the Friday before Christmas. The check wasn’t deposited until New Year’s Eve.
America. Home of the Best Health-Care System in the World(tm).
Well here in San Francisco it is weirdly nice. It’s sunny and warm. It’s usually cloudy and rainy and cool.
If Jeopardy wants me to audition locally, I’ll probably be notified in March and go to Detroit sometime in the summer to audition.
Zach cleared three hurdles to get invited to compete on the show, and deserves an enormous amount of credit for having gotten that far.
hey spocko — how ya doing tonight?
Evening, TT, Spocko
So I don’t know if I told you folks about my FOIA request for information about what deal Foster Farms cut with the USDA to avoid a recall was denied. All of my requests for info were denied because they said Foster Farms is under investigation. I can refile after the investigation.
Now to me this is just BS. The public should know NOW what is going on. I’m filing an appeal, but this bogus.
i’ve got my fingers and toes crossed that you make it two fdlers on jeopardy. it was so cool that there was a front page post about zach’s appearance – i want the same for you
that is total bullshit spocko
*spitting* fuckers just don’t wanna have to comply with the law (which is how FF got into trouble in the first place)
And the killin’ goes on and on and…
Just drivin’ by ta say “hi” to the smilin’ Grandma…how’s the little one?
We have a new grandbaby, Adaline is her name and breakin’ hearts is her game!
Grand parenthood is a gas ain’t it Sister Suzanne!
The other thing I’m looking into is who are the companies that are on the Trans Pacific Partnership food related lobbying side.
I’m thinking of developing a video that suggests that people contact them and ask, “Are you going to protect the food your customers in America get or allow the ‘Thin White Line’ of USDA/FDA inspectors to be pierced by tainted food from pacific rim countries?
Hmm, now that I think about it the thin while line might get people to think of coke. I’m envisioning people in white lab coats inspecting food.
Keep up the effort. I’m surprised anyone is buying Foster Farms anything! My store stopped carrying their chickens for weeks, but they had them stocked again. I wouldn’t touch even the package until someone brings them to account.
norske!!! congrats comrade….. hard to believe my grandbaby is gonna be 3 in april… grandbabies sure make the time pass fast…
what are the details on your latest dood? dish!
Congratulations, and don’t drive your SUV on the frozen lake. Every year, the Detroit TV stations show footage of dumdums who drive their SUVs on the lake and wind up being rescued by the Coast Guard or by sheriff’s deputies.
i won’t buy ff chicken either.
I wanted to use the hard data that I got as a tool to get Safeway to comment on their own food safety rules.
Now I’m going to have to use something else.
I’m also trying to use food safety as a way to get a comment from corporations on the importance of it then ask them, “Now, you have said that ‘food safety is your number one concern’ what is your position of the TPP deal that removes USDA/FDA testing on seafood coming from Vietnam?”
I’m trying to develop this story in advance on why the trade pubs should cover this and why their readers (Grocery stores, distributors, restaurants)
I said to them, “The reason that getting rid of US food safety import standards should matter to your readers is that most people don’t have regular contact with the USDA/FDA. But they do have contact with the brand name food makers, restaurants and grocery stories they visit. If there is a tainted food crisis these companies are going to take the hit first. If people find out that “The Thin White Line” of food inspection at our borders was purposely removed, they will want to know who either allowed it to happen are made it happen.
I wouldn’t be surprised if all of Costco’s roasted chickens came from Foster Farms
Now, you have said that ‘food safety is your number one concern’ what is your position of the TPP deal that removes USDA/FDA testing on seafood coming from Vietnam?”
a most excellent question — one that should be asked of our congresscritters too
One of the items I asked for was the names of the private label chicken that made people sick. That too was denied.
Foster Farms supplies chicken to many stores under the store brand name. For example ALL of Safeway’s chicken is supplied by Foster Farms. So their ‘O Organics’ their “Safeway Farms” and their Open Nature Chicken are all from Foster Farms.
I wanted to know what other names they sold the tainted chicken under.
i’m so glad i shop at a grocery store that sells meat and poultry that is locally produced – i pay more but the peace of mind is totally worth it
Mrs. Tiger and I hold out for Miller Farms whole chickens, which are antibiotic-free and raised in Indiana’s Amish country. A family-owned grocery store chain sometimes sells them for $1.29/lb.
Actually yes they did. And Costco recalled them, even though it was a “warning letter” I found out that Trader Joe’s had one brand of chick that was Foster Farms. When they got the Warning Letter they chose to remove it from shelves. Safeway didn’t. Probably because if they did they would have to remove ALL the chicken.
But the way they got around it was to push the burden onto the consumer. Saying, “Well as long as you cook it enough and don’t cross contaminate you will be fine.”
Of course under that logic why bother with any testing at all. Send it out 100 percent contaminated. If handled correctly people should be fine.
sweet — that’s a good price too…
When I was doing research in to the food coming into the use from Vietnam I found out that they send a lot of farm raised fish and shrimp, but the water conditions are so bad that they feed them antibiotics. This is one of the things that will happen more of if the TPP food rules pass. The US has guidelines on how much antibiotics can be in fish and seafood, but the “safety” rules in those other countries don’t. That will be called “equivalent” to US laws. The US can’t refuse the food because they say the standards are too low. Actually they can, but they will be sued for not sticking to the terms of the deal.
Thanks, Suzanne! I hope to have the chance to carry the FDL colors* into battle on Jeopardy.
* Jane Hamsher needs to come up with an FDL flag and coat of arms.
Mrs. Tiger has avoided tiger shrimp from Southeast Asia, and has gotten seafood warnings about farm-raised tilapia. We grew up in New Jersey, where seafood used to be cheap and locally-sourced. Not so possible nowadays.
I spoke to my hair dresser who is from Vietnam. She said that the people in Vietnam don’t like their food poisoned either. If the US demanded better food then they would have to fix the system or find some other sucker country to buy it.
So it’s not just about supporting the health of people in the US, hopefully its about bringing up the standards in other places.
Speaking of standards. Only about 1 percent of the imported seafood is checked by the FDA. And even that finds some nasty stuff. For them to take that away is madness. But in America we don’t act until there is a tragedy. Even then we don’t always act.
People say, ‘The market will correct the problem!” Right, tell that to the babies who died from bad baby formula.
(someone said “Is the Market going to punish the coal industry?”
can we use the logo up top with the flames?
I’d expect Trader Joe’s to do the right thing, Safeway – they’re the Monsanto/Bank of America of food retailing
we don’t act when men with guns shoot up schools, malls, or theaters — our gov’t won’t do anything to protect americans from bad food.
too much $$$ to be made from the food corporations – just like from gun manufacturers
token’s giving me the evil eye — guess i had better take him out to do his business
g’nite all — happy dreams
We’ll have to ask Jane. I think we need to form an FDL trivia team to go to bars.
I wonder if Zach Tomanelli was the first Firepup to appear on Jeopardy. By the way, the show introduced him as an “online organizer.”
Good night, Suz!
Oh, I agree. So what I’m trying to do is show organizations that it is in their own best interest to keep the USDA/FDA in the loop. Sick and dead customers are bad for your brand.
Also, because of the way the food chain works and is so long, it might be hard to locate the source.
When I was working on the tainted pet food issue in 2007 the people who sold the melamine that went into the wheat gluten were never caught. The Owner of the company that processed and sold it got in a bulldozer and destroyed the entire factor. So when the USDA/FDA inspectors got to China to check it out it was, “What factory?” Nobody to blame. Also no laws on the books at that time.
Sorry 8,000 dead cats and dogs. Too bad 16,000 sick ones.
