FDL Movie Night: Patton Oswalt “To Be Loved and Understood”

Director Julien Nitzberg returns to FDL Movie Night with To Be Loved and Understood, his ten minute mini-doc about comic genius  Patton Oswalt. And he’s brought Patton Oswalt with him! The American stand-up comedian, writer, actor, and voice actor known for roles such as Spencer Olchin in the popular sitcom The King of Queens joins us to discuss, well, whatever we ask, and he’s willing to answer!

Shot for the series Rituals, and executive produced by Ashton Kutcher (who, let’s face it, is the world’s luckiest nerd, even more so than Bill Gates), To Be Loved and Understood takes us onstage and backstage during one of  Oswalt’s standup shows in Irvine, CA.

On stage, and in To Be Loved and Understood, Oswalt discusses low self-esteem, depression, suicide, and creativity, and his desire(part of the human condition) to be loved and understood.  To Be Loved and Understood also reveals Nitzberg’s skills as a director; we inadvertently see him on camera at one point when his subject begins to argue with him, and watch Nitzberg try to complete his job. Berated repeatedly during the interview process, Nitzberg becomes part of the comic’s improvised routine that night.

Interspersed with interviews from fans attending the show, To Be Loved and Understood is concise, funny and poignant, and makes me curious to see more of Oswalt and watch Rituals.
