And sometimes it bends toward justice quicker than you’d think.
While the Supreme Court may try to think differently by bringing back the greatest misses of the 19th Century, politically the issue of same-sex marriage is going forward…quickly.
As state officials make their case for gay marriage to the U.S. Supreme Court, a new Field Poll showed record support in California for same sex unions.
“By a nearly two-to-one margin (61% to 32%), California voters approve of allowing same-sex couples to marry,” according to the poll. This represents a complete reversal in views about the issue from 1977, when the Field Poll conducted its first survey on the topic, and is the highest level of support ever measured by the poll.
The poll noted that in 1977 only 28% approved of gay marriage while 59% disapproved. In 2006, it had 44% approval and 50% disapproval.
And not even four and a half years ago, Prop 8 passed in California banning same sex marriage (52% to 48%).
That is pretty dramatic.

About Firedoglake
It is a Civil Rights matter, and it is seen as such, finally. That corner is turned, and there is no going back.
Recalcitrant legislators in my state have been hearing from me that their position is a losing one, they are seen as irrelevant by their grandchildren, they are going to be left behind without sentiment despite their having become relics.
Time for them to go. Move over and make room for the new. Their sell by date is past. Buh bye.
Wonder what caused such a swift turnaround? My impression was that we’d have to wait for the older generations to die off before we’d have enough votes to grant equality. I’d like to think it was the Prop 8 trial, where the supporters basically appealed to prejudice and talked nonsense.
Odd, the country has not self destructed because of this. I’m sure the GOP and the Catholic Church told me that would happen.
Boxturtle (Haters gotta hate, I’m sure they’ll go down fighting)
Verily, the world is catching up with Dick Cheney.

Yeah, it’s basic equality. I sure hope the corner has turned, but it wouldn’t have taken but one Romney appointment to the supremes to set justice back a decade.
And I hate to say it, but I’m not sure it’s a losing position in Az. Not yet. I dunno that it’s a losing position here in Ohio, either.
Boxturtle (Churches will still pray against it if it comes to a vote)
Good morning, pups. Today we have Brooks, Cohen and Krugman. In “The Learning Virtues” Bobo says a book on education cultures finds that the Chinese tend to define learning morally while Westerns define it cognitively. Mr. Cohen, in “Zero Dark Zero,” says most Israelis now feel their security is assured without giving up anything. Prof. Krugman, in “Ben Bernanke, Hippie,” says that dismissive attitude toward anyone who spoke out against the Iraq war 10 years ago is back to disparage any critic of fiscal austerity.
Here they are, and
here’s Krugman’s blog.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got waffles with warm maple syrup today. Just to ruin your weekend, allow me to point out that the lead story in the NYT this morning bears the headline “Boehner Halts Talks on Cuts, and House G.O.P. Cheers.” The content is described thusly:
Well, when the sequester was voted on he said he got 98% of what he wanted, so I guess we shouldn’t be all that surprised. Welcome to Bedlam. Life in this little corner of Savannah just got a bit more interesting. Tribble has discovered the joys of Venetian blind cords… Time to feed the herd and get another cup of tea. Have a great day.
Yup. No reason to talk with Palestine at all, just shoot. The America Indian solution in action: Put ‘em in reservations in the worst land, then shrink the reservations.
Boxturtle (And we’ll back the Israeli’s while they do it)
Thanks, attaturk. Rabbit, Rabbit. (First day of the month, say it for luck, just as idiotic as voting for economic disaster anyway.)
Isn’t it great, seeing gays getting married and being happy worked imho. Not kinky, but kind.
A friend of mine who is gay said to me “You think we’ve won? Watch what happens when one of those couples tries to adopt”.
Boxturtle (Still a ways to go)
Thanks Marion, Krugman birthday yesterday, too. Dismissive, as opposed to accusations of treason? Refreshing.
Hi Marion
I’m always late to Attaturk’s in the morning; but his post is my first read.
And your NYT opinion page recap over the YEARS (!) is much appreciated; especially as “it’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it.” I am so pleased that you sweeten your report with the kittens antics –supurb word pictures that make me chuckle and sometimes: 707 !
Thanks!
