We will likely be warned, apocalyptically, for the next five days. The effects on our air travel, our food inspection, our health research, our military “readiness:” all catastrophic. House members, House leadership, House minority members, Senate leadership and members, Administration spokespersons and Cabinet members — all the way to the president.
PANIC
Everybody with the power to stop this thing is going to tell us how terrible it is.
Mostly with an eye to ensuring Americans blame somebody else. But every time anyone with the power to stop the sequester rails about the sequester, Americans need to ask, “Why don’t you simply repeal it, then?”
Not a new idea. But one with increasing urgency: it’s five days away, and Congress can make it stop. So, make it stop?
I’m not sure I dislike the cuts to defense too terribly much, but I’m quite sure I dislike any cuts to Head Start, so I’m willing to see the sequester go away. It’s the worst kind of chicken-government: let’s put government on the chopping block, and see if we can do something to avoid it before it gets here.
Well, it’s here. And our ‘government’ didn’t do a single thing to avoid it. Now, can they all please walk back from the brink to keep from ruining what the talking heads like to call America’s fragile recovery but the rest of us experience as continuing ruinous depression? I mean, if an outside terror group were threatening this level of chaos, uncertainty, and economic ruin we’d all be pressing for pre-retaliation.
Clearly, we’re past the point of being able to do anything constructive in place of the sequester. Congress doesn’t have enough in-session days left to get anything done. And yet every one of them will tell us how awful this not-carved-in-stone law is. A law they wrote (not important anymore who moved what goalposts, although it’s instructive that Village Media has become obsessed with that aspect) is a law they can repeal.
Let’s press the folks who can make it go away: why won’t you simply make the sequester go away?

Yeah, well, that presumes there are statesmen in DC, you know some folks who actually care.
Yup. Care about people and the effects of their action or inaction on same, that is. We know that Washington is chock full of nuts who care about playing childish blame games.
I think Americans are really over this narcissistic drama in DC.
Tax The Rich. It’s politically non-toxic. But noooooo.
Aren’t the folks who can make it go away out of town? Timely, I guess.
I think they come back mid-week; time enough to pass a one-sentence bill.
I looked at the effects that the sequester has on the 50 states. It really varies. Oregon comes out pretty well and could easily pick up the difference if the state wants to. But, man ‘o’ man, the states with the military bases and the fed workers, get clocked. Well, the ” money train ” states and municipalities are finally going to get a taste of what the rest of us have been going through. ” Don’t let the door hit you on the ass when the ” money train ” pulls out of the station. How does it feel?, how does it feel to be on your own…”. Daddy Warbucks giveth and taketh, don’t he?
This is what Obama and Boehner both wanted. They blame each other and we get screwed.
our government has been destroying smaller, weaker countries for years. It appears that America is now weak enough to be destroyed by the same people who have been looting weaker countries for fun and profit.
they now have their own political party whose apparent mission is to destroy this country from within. actually, looks like it’s working pretty well so far. plutocrats didn’t become plutocrats because they weren’t good at planning.
it is sheer brilliance to capture, channel and direct rascist America to take control of a political party and elect enough ignorant pigs to control one house of Congress and obstruct the other house. It could have never happened without the fist black president sitting in the White House. The plutocrats have won, they are better planners. I’m considering Ecuador or Costa Rica.
I had to laugh at the D of D threatening that it might not be able to make flyovers available next summer.
If that’s all a cut at the D of D means, I’m guessing we could cut 50% and no one would notice.
No escaping the empire.
… and beware of relocating near coastlines in the age of climate change.
The sequester has not served its purpose yet: Obama wants those cuts to SS and the rest of the safety net and he’s not leaving office without them.
That’s why Obama wanted this sequester. He thought he could use this as leverage with the GOP to get his Social Security/Medicare cuts (aka the “grand bargain”), and as usual, he’s totally wrong and miscalculated badly.
Repeal the sequester? LOL.
Nahgahappen.
Obama and Boehner both want cuts and Obama especially wants to put his mark on US society by making cuts to SocSec and Medicare. He’s talked about this since at least July 2007 and hasn’t changed his tune.
Both men are highly disruptive to this country’s society and economy. Bad leaders, both.
