Jon Walker wrote here yesterday:
Even with strong popular support, Obama’s call for increasing the minimum wage is unlikely to get through the Republican controlled House… Of course given the current ideological makeup of House Republicans, any proposal Obama makes is likely dead on arrival as well. So since no legislation is going to be approved, Obama might as well spend his time advocating for things that can be used as political weapons by Democrats….
The minimum wage increase is both very popular and easy to understand. Expect it to feature prominently in Democrats 2014 strategy.
Indeed, today The Plum Line confirms this:
In an interview with me, Nancy Pelosi summed up the message Dems used against Republicans in 2006, and will again use in 2014: “Just keep it simple. We want to raise the minimum wage, and you don’t. Why not?”
This is of a piece with the broader observation that President Obama’s recent State of the Union speech was largely designed around defining wedge issues that Democrats can campaign on in 2014.
But stop for a moment, and think about how shocking that is.
Announcing legislative initiatives intended to give your own party a near-term political advantage? And even coordinating with your own party on a prospective campaign message?! It’s hard to think of anything Barack Obama did between 2009 and 2011 that would fit this description — in fact, on high-profile issues such as healthcare reform and the ill-fated “pivot” to deficit reduction, Obama’s goal has often (and famously) seemed to be the opposite.
What happened here? Are we talking pod people, or was there some other kind of secret switch (see video above right)?
In terms of the well-worn stupid-versus-evil question, that Obama appears to have finally learned this political lesson argues in favor of the former (although there are still occasional data points for the latter). I’m not sure how reassuring that is.

I’m hoping O spends his second term playing basketball & golf. And I don’t even want a pony.
1) Raising min wage to $12 or $15 an hour will never happen, that’s a pipe dream and it’s kabuki smoke.
2) This issue is being used (it’s not real cuz it can’t ever happen) to obfuscate and distort to hide the REAL issues in the legislation that DOES pass. Which is all corporate favored and is eroding we the people, the middle class standard of living and such.
I wouldn’t take serious any of this crap. Obama and Pelosi will continue to appease their corporate masters in ways the GOP never could have.
Look at SCOTUS ruling coming up on voting rights.
Obama gets pr for asking SCOTUS to retain article 5, but he’s done NOTHING to advocate for STRONGER voting rights for minorities . . . . hell, he let ACORN go down without even TRYING to save it.
Ah well, on we trudge.
Yeah. Asking Herb for a pony woulda been kinda false flaggish, right?
I posted this in the Faster’s Roundup, but it got buried at the end. Going to try once more here, in hopes of some of you actually seeing it:
Okay, FDL’rs (or whatever we call ourselves), I created a grand video (coincidentally, the first video store to open up in my town when I was a kid was called, “Grand Video”) re: Obama’s 11ty-demensiony Chess. He’s actually doing it, it’s just that he’s playing for the wrong side.
This video explains just how Obama is robbing the poor and middle-class blind, while successfully blaming the Republicans (who are no better, but only half as clever). It also exposes 2 Obamas through clips explaining sequestration — one from 2011 and one from 2013. I worked really hard on it and hope a few of you will at least get something out of it!
I don’t know how to embed a video here, but I’m going to link. This is the only site I know of that can grasp that a person can be a LIBERAL and NOT supportive of Obama. I look forward to your feedback.
Here’s the link:

Sadly, there’s a glitch and I can’t make it an active link, so you’re gonna have to go all 2007 and “cut and paste.”
Okay, everything went glitchy on me and now that stupid post with NO LINK is up there.
You can click here to see the video I describe above in the wall of text!
To Swopa and all the posters. –
Obama and the Democrats PRETENDING they want to raise the minimum age is NOT a sign of anything except that they think you and I are really stupid.
Obama could get out there and push for raising the minimum wage – put some effort into it like the big fat effort he has put into murdering Social Security. He could collect 15 people of which he knows 12 are for it, including the two bipartisan leaders, form a commission to give him binding recommendations in two months, send the two big-mouth leaders all around the country pushing for this, insist they get to present the idea of raising the wage in every big bank or no more free billions, ….
He could get off his tail and really work this one.
Or, he could just say “It would be nice” wink wink so Nancy and Harry and all the good Dems have an issue to fool you with.
PRETENDING you are in favor of raising the minimum wage when you never intend to force the issue in any “Grand (Hah!) Bargain” or whenever you might actually have some leverage is NOT something to be proud of.
IT SUCKS. HE SUCKS AS A LEADER. He is NOT for the middle class. He is for the very poor (maybe) and the humongously rich (for sure). You, NO. NO WAY. NO HOW. NADA. NUTTIN. … etc.
WISE UP!!!
How is he for the “very poor?” I happen to be in that income bracket and he sure as fuck isn’t for a person like me. I had it easier under Bush — and I hated Bush.
So, pretending to want to raise the minimum wage will offset the very real damage that will be done to the Democratic Party for cutting Social Security and Medicare and will secure victory for them in the 2014 elections?
Mais bien sur.
…Ah well, on we trudge.
That we must, Larue…! Besides raising the minimum wage to say, an actual living wage like $20/hr…. We need to focus on strengthening our social Safety Net by repealing the Big Dawg’s ‘Welfare Reform’…! Specifically, the 5 year lifetime limit…! Of course, I’d settle for repealing the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act of 1999 (GLBA), but, I suppose, I should wish for a pony instead…!
Heh. I agree. And I don’t give a shit who he plays with.
I agree. Zero sure ain’t “for teh poorz”. He’s only for the .0001%. No one else even exists. So STFU, eat shit & die … as they say.
Nothing “shocking” or surprising about this — he did the same thing during the ’08 campaign, then fell down on the job when he had majorities in both houses. I am fed up with his paying lip service to liberal/progressive causes. Oh, sure he will throw us a bone now and then, but the big issues get subverted.
At this point, I’d be happy with a bone. I haven’t even gotten that. What did everyone think of my video (no one’s said a word)?

Two things remain constant with all musings about Obama: people wonder why he says what he says, and people wonder if he means it. This has been the case at least since 2008, when Obama appointed all those neocons to his cabinet.
My theory–that Barack Obama is a neocon posing as a centrist Democrat–continues to explain the President’s behavior better than any other hypothesis.
Obama has to continually maintain the facade of being a Democrat–which involves saying things Democrats might like to hear–then do essentially neocon things. That’s the short version of Obama’s first term.
Much of the President’s alleged “3-dimensional chess” maneuvering is actually simple duplicity–an effort to maintain plausible deniability. That’s why he creates weird, bipartisan commissions, specifically designed to take our stuff away, in the manner of neocons. That’s why he proposes laws that can never pass. That’s why he blames Congress for everything. That’s why he is obsessed with secrecy and persecutes whistleblowers. It’s also why Obama supporters act, think, and talk like neocons.

My take–advocacy for a stronger minimum wage, gay rights, and gun control are Obama’s symbolic offerings to the left. They either won’t pass, will only pass in a most watered-down form, or will pass but only because the corporate Right is kabuki’ing with its
dupesfollowing and really doesn’t strongly oppose the measure to begin with (i.e., gay rights). Besides, with the Right, it’s good to have an “outrage” here or there that they can point to for the next election cycle. Also, my take is that Obama on bringing up gun control in particular is positioning the Dems to lose in 2014, so he can have his “Republican friends” back in power and be “forced” at last to gut the social safety net. Gun control and abortion are powerful wedge issues not because the people who fight against them are large in numbers, quite the contrary; they are outnumbered badly It’s just because those people largely base their vote on these issues and *nothing else*, and the reverse is not true for those who favor more gun restrictions or uphold a woman’s right to her body. Obama knows this, and knows that in a low-turnout midterm election those numbers, even though low, could be potent.

The minimum wage increase won’t pass. There won’t be much on gun control — maybe background checks. But there’s nothing wrong with proposing this stuff, even if you don’t think you can get it done. It helps to change the politics just to propose it. These measures are actually very popular. And recognizing it won’t happen doesn’t mean Obama doesn’t want it to happen and he’s cynically proposing it just to throw a bone to the left.
Some of the stuff on this thread is reallio-trulio paranoid.
B.H.Obama’s politics MO is knowable at this point .. since Jan.20,2009 Obama has been doing what Obama does / does not do … to still not be getting this at this point is a willed political blindness … the O/D zealots and what they did to get Obama elected again being Exhibit#1…
It was and is politically dumb to want someone like Obama(DLC)(1%)(Wall St.)(MIC)(Bush GWOT 2.0) in the WH again …yet O/D zealots wanted this?
O/D zealots let this happen … they own the consequences.
It’s hard to think of anything Barack Obama did between 2009 and 2011 that would fit this description — in fact, on high-profile issues such as healthcare reform and the ill-fated “pivot” to deficit reduction, Obama’s goal has often (and famously) seemed to be the opposite.
To follow on norecovery’s point, the correct point of comparison would be 2007-8, when Obama was trying to win an election by positioning himself as a progressive, not 2009-11 when he had won the election and governed as the centrist technocrat that he is.
The desperation with which many people want to believe that Obama is something which his entire record since 2008 makes perfectly clear he is not stopped being merely pathetic a couple of years ago and is now downright embarrassing.
