CNN likely spent in the mid-five figures to cover the event, according to a rough estimate TVNewser put together. A local Alabama helicopter charter company told us a mid-size helicopter would likely cost around $1,000 an hour to rent, while medium-sized boats in the area run a few hundred dollars a day. The rental fees, combined with costs associated with sending staff to Alabama from Atlanta and New York, and fees associated with broadcasting live on location, and it adds up to somewhere in the $30-$50K range.
Journalism is dying because you kids don’t read anymore, and you’re too busy lining up for iPads to be serious about real news.

Alison, you’ve nailed it. Can’t think of anything further to say.
But this is important stuff! You know I love a good poop joke as much as the next guy and since nobody died, they figured, “Hey let’s have some fun!”
Check out this weeks Jimmy Dore show podcast or the David Feldman show today, they do great political humor and they had fun with it.
The think that I’m angry about is the media constantly doing stories about the deficit. You know whose pitching those stories? Pete Peterson and his PR firms. They have “events” and “studies” and then we have the big crisis that the papers HAVE TO COVER!
One of the things I’ve know for a while is that if you have to do radical stuff to make “news” and the media don’t really like covering serious news.
They like to cover silly stuff that then gives them a chance to talk about serious stuff.
They also like radical action. The whole Dorner thing? All I could think about was OJ and the White Bronco.
It’s really pathetic that Dorner felt that the only way people would pay attention to him was by killing people.
Did any of you watch the show “Leverage”? It often talks about what the rich and powerful pay attention to. And how they can often buy their way out of trouble. The Leverage team go directly to the powerful and get “leverage” often in the form of taking money from the rich or conning them.
Dorner needed someone like Leverage people or Michael Weston in Burn Notice.
A way to get his name back and get justice with out feeling he had to kill people.
I believe that Dorner did everything he was accused of, I believe Dorner had no grievances, I believe that Dorner actually died in the cabin burn which was an accident, and that his driver’s license survived unsinged, I believe that Dorner was the only one who died, etc.
Seconded.
My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From ev’ry mountainside
Let freedom ring!
I believe for every drop of rain that falls, a flower grows.
The cruise ship story gives new meaning to the phrase “weekend news dump.”
I figured out the disadvantage of ship parties, cruises the first time I went on a fundraiser on a boat that cruises around the Manhattan skyscrapers at night.
You can’t leave when you want to.
I did one more party boat: employer’s holiday party.
It is inconceivable to me that anyone would go on a cruise ship.
After all, what could possibly go wrong.
Official leaks are making this admin into one of the most transparent on record. (/s)
What is an iPad btw. Sounds like something electronic that women resort to at that time of month.
OffT
Fun analysis of Syriana. If you didn’t understand what was happening, that was deliberate.
One thing I learned. The term Syriana, wh is never mentioned in the movie, is a think tank word to describe how the U.S. et al can take advantage of all the messed up borders that that the Brit-Fr empires created in the ME when they were breaking up the Ottoman empire.
Mu sister-in-law and her husband owned a travel agency and traveled a lot. They went on a Greek cruise and the crew decided it would be a good time to mutiny! They had no service and had to get their own food. It actually was awful but they told about it in a really funny way.
On the clip, one of the lines is that the network will have to commit murder to get their ratings up.
Hmmm. Hadn’t thought of that. I naively thought that the FF events were govt caused events. I’ll have to keep an open mind in the future. Could be that FFs are media caused events designed to get better ratings.
Cruise news dump.
I believe I will take a shower, brush my teeth and go to bed.
Your story gave me a good laugh, but I wasn’t there.
Disclosure: I’m not a boat fan in any guise. Water is boring. I’m a mountain kind.
One other boating story. One of my 2 biz boondoggles. Weekend in Bermuda for giving an hour speech.
Point was to schmooz with clients, and wide range of fawncy choices to do it. (Month bef 10/19/87 stock market crash, so add large dose of irony.) I chose deep sea fishing. Knew it would be the only chance in my life to see what that was like.
One wife of a client was visibly pregnant. Several of us gently suggested there might be a better choice for her that day. Nope, she said she’d be perfectly fine.
I was a little queasy with the swells, learned that catching a big fish is tricky bc even after one is hooked, reeling it in requires practiced technique.
Pregnant woman spent time under deck or over railing.
Good night. Keep that candle glowing in the darkest night, though.
Mrs. Tiger and I went on a cruise about 25 years ago, and enjoyed a number of the ports of call (Caracas, Grenada, Martinique). The cruise line hadn’t yet turned into a floating club or a clip joint for adult beverages. Today? That’s another story.
Have you ever seen the Charlestown bridge?
It’s a real beaut!
Sure. Because the administration always leak the stuff that is the most embarrassing to the administration. Tears the lid right off!
(The sarcasm is not for you. I’m just feeling silly.)
Real journalism ain’t dying. It committed suicide by merger and acquisition.
