Apparently, the number of State of the Union responses has been stretched yet again, this year to three: not only will Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Tea Party darling of the Florida right, deliver his response in both Spanish and English. (Which counts as *two* responses, in my book, however you dress it up in the same GOP container. By the way, someone IS keeping track that he says the same thing in both speeches, right? DNC Oppo Research Dept? Hello?)
But now the people who brought us Michele “Which Camera?” Bachmann (R-CrazyEyes) and Herman “NeinNeinNein” Cain will feature PaulSpawn Rand in a featurette entitled “Who’s Laughing at my Commander-in-Chief Fantasy Now, Hillary?” in which the Kentucky Senator Who Is Not Mr Elaine Chao will expand on his previously cut-short essay, **If I Was President!**
“I would have relieved you of your post!” — words that will live in infamy in the fever swamp.
All three of these SOTU response speeches are going to present viable, albeit more rightward, reasoned approaches to governing our nation. Simply another way to answer the great questions of the day, from a more conservative, contained, rational perspective. Or — there will be lots of ignorant Benghazi-Benghazi-Benghazi ranting alongside ‘evidence’ of Xtian Persecution and Oppression from both gentlemen in three languages: English, Spanish, and Earl Grey. Plus some incredibly clever Austerity Bad/MOAR Austerity! Cirque de Soleil air-tumbling borrowed from our cousins across the pond.
Here’s what we won’t hear about, and what makes me wonder: Why No Lefty SOTU Parry, Keith and Raul?
1. Assassination of American citizens: only abroad?
2. Climate Change: what four more years of can-kicking buys your grandchildren
3. Fracking: what’s wrong with radioactive tap water, folks? Pittsburgh gets by fine with it!
4. LGBT: Things the Preznit could do today, by Executive Order, with the Executive Orders piled on his desk in his Executive Order In-Box. And: are you not a friend of the Big Court, Mr Preznit, on DOMA and Prop8? Due soon! Perhaps your legal team could file a Frenemies of the Court brief that even Alito might grasp?
5. Ladeez and The Mysterious Parts: Rape & Legitimate Rape, and Sequelae Thereof
6. Budget Cut Balancing 101: Having Given Away the Program Cuts Store in Rounds One and Two, Here’s how to Make it Up
7. Why “Grand Bargain” is spelt A*u*s*t*e*r*i*t*y
8. Who are Those 8% of USAns who Don’t Support Universal Background Checks? Can we deport them instead of Piers Morgan?
9. Pot: Why Not?
10: Occupy Everywhere!
Seriously there’s lots more topics I’d like to see covered in a SOTU response as well. Bradley Manning: Hero or Patriot? DoJ Staffing Allocation: Why Assange and Not Dimon? Who’s in Prison Now: Kiriakou vs Brennan vs Rodriguez?
So few of these actual topics will be broached during any of the four center-right, right, far-right and loony-right SOTUs this week that it’s simply sad. Here are the American people, most of us way over on one side, seeking answers and solutions, bonded together in almost unanimous support for ending the War On Some People Who Use Drugs, ending the War On Some People Who Grow Drugs, and ending the Real Drug War On Our Border That’s Killed 40,000 Mexicans — as well as Jobs, Jobs, Jobs.
And way over there to our Right? All four SOTUs.
Taxing millionaires and billionaires at Ike’s marginal tax rates would be attractive to most Americans, if someone would bring it up, ever. Imprisoning bankers, fast-traders, mortgage fraudsters and Outside Traders is something we needn’t just shake our heads about on a barstool. Americans would support a politician who articulated these values. We’d cheer him or her on.
I guess I’ve answered my own question, then: why can’t we have nice things like speeches that would garner majority support from the American people in the dead of winter? Because they’d garner majority support from the American people in the dead of winter. That’s why not.
And then who would watch American Idol?

About Firedoglake
Teddy!
Don’t you understand that, as far as the media and the Villagers are concerned, the entire range of American ™ political opinion runs from center right to far right. Everything else is just the lunatic fringe.
Hey, Dr. D. Feeling better?
I am, though the cold is still lingering a bit. Haven’t been around much because I could not stay up past 8:30 MST all last week. How is your semester going?
, Teddy; especially the finish. I’d rec, but there’s no rec button. :(
Really trying to avoid politics for a day, but….your question about compating Rubio’s two speeches makes me feel obligated to break my usual rule and listen to both, just to make sure. Bleah.
Of course, no doubt plenty of qualified folks will take on that obnoxious duty.
But you’re right, we need a response from the left. And I absolutely don’t see why the Tea Party gets to be broadcast; they can “respond” if they want to, but nobody has to listen. Are they an official third party now?
So far, so good. I have two sections of oral skills and two of writing, so I’m in the enviable position of only having to do five lesson plans a week instead of, say, eight….
Of course they aren’t. It’s just a way for the “liberal media” to give the Republicans extra time.
teddy! it really burns me that the right gets so many opportunities to push for ‘their way’ but the left gets zero.
Antonio Gramsci had something to say about that.
But Obama is the leftiest lefty who ever left! And he’s blah, too!
Crap, apparently while editing my typos out, I somehow deleted the first clause of my first sentence. !!! It was supposed to say, “good post!”
Dr. Dick, asleep at 8:30? Wow, you know you’re sick when that happens, huh? Glad to hear you’re mending.
Umm, is the quote you’re going for the one midway down the page?
Yeah, boy, all I can do, short of yelling at the tv, when someone like the idjit R who was on Fox recently (saw it in a clip somewhre) insisting that he “knows” Obama is a socialist, because of his youthful writings and (this is where I wanted to bang my head) the people he’s appointed. No doubt the people like Tim Geithner and Chuck Hagel….
There is a really nasty cold circulating here that grabbed me by the throat last week. Had no energy and had to teach with half a functioning brain all last week. Feeling better now, though I am not completely over it yet. I actually took a sick day on Tuesday, about the fifth or sixth in the 15 years I have been here.
That is one of them. Gramsci invented the idea of hegemonic control and wrote extensively about it.
There have been some pretty ugly (and persistent) virii going around all over the country, I think. I had a student come to class in a state of utter misery Thursday–plus one for dedication, I say, but minus five for good sense.
Whew! An actual sick day! I wish I could say that.
Of course, you should be deeply, abjectly grateful that you have any sick days at all. I remember (puts on quavering granny voice) when ten days sick leave were the norm for office workers, even the lowliest.
Now, the number of sick days seems to get cut back regularly. It was one of the first things done when Chase merged with Bank One (along with eliminating the extra break time for new mothers to nurse their babies. There was even a “lactating room.” After the merger, new moms had to use their regular 10 or 15 min. break time…which includes the time it takes to get downstairs and back upstairs. I obviously didn’t need it, but that just seemed like a slap on both cheeks to let us all know we’d been spoiled, but that was all over now, peasants!)
Umm on that assassinating American citizens thingy. It could be dangerous to go to some locales overseas, if you recently pissed off your tea party rep. Best keep looking up.

The one I have is definitely weapons grade. It has been circulating in the department and I think I may have gotten off easier than most. Fortunately I have a pretty robust immune system.
Is it obligatory to listen to any of this, including the preznit speech? I’m pretty sure FDL and HP will have this in awesome detail, just right for skimming.
Good question, even though we all know the answer.
Very seldom does anyone in government or media acknowledge that anything or anyone is to the left of Obama.
The Koch brothers had good reason to contribute to the DLC when it was starting–and they did, even though they were supposedly dreaming up the Tea Party at that same time.
I sometimes fall into the old trap of saying things like “both sides,” and “third” party, even though I know better. If we are talking Democrats and Republicans, there is only side, or maybe 1.33 sides. However, if we are talking the full spectrum of political beliefs and parties, there are many more than only two or three.
But, that does not feed the corporatist narrative. So, we have been conditioned by everyone who has a megaphone to say silly things like “both” parties,” even while knowing, if we stop to think, just how silly that languaging is.
Is this where the preznit does his grand betrayal thing or is that behind closed doors?
Hell, I worked a lot of jobs were I did not have any sick days making my way through college. Fortunately, the university lets you roll over unused sick days. I currently have 20 weeks worth. Whatever I have left when I pull the plug, I get paid for at 50%.
Probably all that healthy exercise out in the great, chilly and snowy outdoors. Exercise is thought to boost one’s immune system, I think.
No question there are some nasty things going around. My mother thought she had the flu; dealt with it herself without going to the doc till after it was over, but the dr. said it was likely the “other” virus so widespread this year.
Everyone I know seems to have been sick at some point, and while I think mine was at least triggered by the usual winter “mountain cedar” allergy (it’s really a juniper tree, but has been called mtn cedar in Tx forever), but it left me tired for a loong time, and my ears still aren’t back to normal.
Haven’t listened to one in decades.
Yes, exactly this.
But don’t enough people know it ain’t so? Enough to generate an audience, at least?
Spot on post Teddy.
I have been re-engaging in statistics again. There is a concept in statistics called “kurtosis.” It essentially means a “bulge” in the data of the stats one is measuring. “Leptokurtic”, means there’s a “slight” bulge in the data.
I offer another measure, regarding public opinion manufacturing which I call “kleptokurtic” which means thieving of, or manufacturing a bulge in the data, which is what these 2nd, 3rd and 4th SOTUs are about.
I think now that they are fighting with Karl Rove, Tea may actually be an official Third, yup.
Unless someone ties me to a chair I will not be watching the SOTU. The prez could save a lot of time by just saying “look at all the good things we have done” and then sit down. I’m such a cynic and I hate it.
Twenty weeks! Wow. Years ago, when I was a secretary or other clerical worker, I had the 10 days, and always used ‘em all. In fact, I remember job applications that used to ask how many sick days you had used in the previous year. I don’t see that anymore, for some reason.
I used them all because respiratory infections are something I’ve always been susceptible to, and in the ’70′s, none of the meds I take for them today had been developed. There was nothing to do but “push fluids” and stay in bed until it ran its course, and that took two weeks, every time. Horrendous racking cough with every slight move…nobody wanted me around if I could get to work.
Now, with Flonase and one of the antihistimine-decongestants like Allegra-D, plus, often, a “pack” of steroid pills, oh and an inhaler or two, I can usually get rid of it in a day or three.
All GOP, alla time.
How much time could they save if he just read the speech from the oval office? On second thought, it would then just be longer.
The irony is that, despite what the media keep saying, we are a left wing (not center left) nation, based on polling data on policy preferences. Very liberal policies are preferred by roughly 60-70% of the people, as long as you do not label them.
Oops, my bad, getting off-topic.
Never heard of kurtosis, knowing nothing about statistics, but I lurve that “kleptokurtic”. Great coinage!
It was your email yesterday that inspired this post, Suz.
It could also be dangerous to be a large African American man anywhere near Big Bear, SoCal, until this cop-killer is caught. They got the DROANZ looking for him; no word on if they’re armed.
Although I find it disheartening how many people have bought into the “entitlement” mythology (you know, lazy people, unemployment makes me people lie around and not look for work…etc. etc.)
A surprising number of folks seem to think it’s okay to turn old people out to die when they’ve outlived their usefulness. Or maybe I should just quit reading comments (except at fdl, of course). The crazees come out on those topics, for sure.
Oh my, yes.
Drones? Seriously?
Everybody’s in favor of that kinda thing (surprisng people on my FB support them wholeheartedly), as long it’s somebody else they’re looking for/killing.
Problems: GPTV is what?
Also: No one from the Green Party understands about being elected to anything.
Finally: Can’t respond to a SOTU until you’ve heard it; programming directly opposite it defeats THAT purpose.
thank you for writing it teddy. well done!
More of that hegemonic control in action. The plutocrats have convinced far too many people that they will never need that because they a virtuous and upright.
Fascinating.
Yeah, I saw that today. I think they are just surveillance drones (which are pretty common among police and SoCal has a lot of them). I think that only the military and intelligence services have access to the killer drones. For now.
For most commentators, the facts don’t really mean much. Bet the first responders on Faux News already got their response ready to go.
I should toddle off as I have to monkey with young minds tomorrow (this week’s lectures in intro are over the primates). Take care all.
Well, yeah, but at least they all have the courtesy (and smarts) to wait until the Preznit is done. Not the Greens!
Nite to all the sleepy leaving Pups!
*WAVE*
The Greens? Not again.
GPTV – link is in the quoted paragraph.
The chat on the livestream is simultaneous with the speech, just like the FDL liveblog and commenting during the speech would be. The discussion with Jill Stein occurs after the speech.
Why the Green Party doesn’t get more votes is a different discussion from what I thought you were asking – why aren’t other points of view available?
Yes, thank you for that.
Isn’t she called Dr Jill Stein?
So no FDL liveblog and commentary this time? Too disrespectful?
I would beg to differ, Teddy…! I did work hard to get Keiko Bonk elected Mayor here…!
And then who would watch American Idol?
I’m proud to say that I’ve never seen a single episode of “Idol.” Or “Dancing With the Stars.” Or “The Biggest Loser.” Or any other reality show. I’d rather read a good book. Or even a not-so-good book.
” Despite some setbacks, the State of Our Union, remains strong. Now is not the time to dwell on past failures, at home or abroad, but to renew our vows that the United States of America is still the greatest …. Blah, Blah, ..Complete Horseshit…..Another big, steaming pile of horseshit just dropped.. more blah, blah… the final pile of shit.. ( could the poor horse have any left ) has fallen… God Bless America. Now let us all rise and sing our new nat’l anthem, Simply Red’s ” Moneys To Tight To Mention. “
Good question. In a lot of her campaign news she’s “Jill Stein” and the campaign was “Jill Stein for President”, though her bio on her campaign site says Dr. Jill Stein. Maybe she chooses not to emphasize the title in the political sphere, I don’t really know.
*oh sh*t* The Dorner dilemma has sprouted legs… Fugitive alleged LAPD-killer is first drone target on U.S. soil…
A good one TP, a very, very good one, mostly covered it all, just the right modicum of snark, truth, frustration and plain ole FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING FUCKS . . . couched in good ole libruhl terminology.
Perhaps, one day, the rainbow will come for we the people.
Till then, we trudge on.

MaryM, is that an ‘I told you so’? If so, I politically love you. The reason why we don’t “have nice things like speeches that would garner majority support from the American people in the dead of winter” is that the majority of ‘the American people’ are either too stupid or too cowardly to organize in their own interests.
Yes, we have a big problem sucking up to corporate donors for the bribes necessary for buying the marketing to herd spineless liberals into the Democratic cattle cars of delusion. You can show the addled horse the water, but you can’t convince him to stop drinking his own urine.
The simplest answer to the question posed at the top of this post– “why are all SOTU responses from the right?”– is that there is no opposition or even substantial criticism from the ‘left.’ Why should there be? Obama was re-elected with impressive numbers, despite his crimes and policy ‘betrayals.’ Liberals bought the turd sandwich– again– and this time asked if they could supersize the iced bile. Liberals own this disaster now, without an asterisk. Obama knows he can do what he wants, and the Democratic quislings liberals sent to D.C. all know it, too.
I recommend all of you Obama supporters just take out some Chinese-made U.S. flags so you can cheer and wave them vigorously every time your champion completes an articulately uttered sentence.
Sam Holloway@61
I just put up a diary at myfdl, and done from the perspective of Native American and Chicano military vets.
And no, we don’t need any Chinese flags to wave to all the passer’s by.
And as military vets, President Obama is America’s first Black Commander-in-Chief, thus, we accord him some Respect.
In contrast, our history also includes the behavior for “gettin’ all up in The Man’s Face” ala 1960s and 1970s, and we do that too and very well.
Jaango
Jaango, you are welcome to respect any mass murderer you choose, no matter his skin color. Regarding the things you list in your diary, there are a few that fit quite well into the Green New Deal. Good luck on any of them seeing the light of day tomorrow, or for the rest of the current administration’s term. You won’t get any such blood out of the corporatist/imperialist Obama turnip.
