Tom Harkin was a relatively young man when he became a United States Senator from Iowa – he is now well into his seventies. This truly liberal stalwart has decided to retire at the expiration of his term, rather than win re-election again in 2014. Undoubtedly there was some frustration, but the man who is often credited as the author of the Americans with Disabilities Act had a lot of triumphs too.
This, for once, really is good news for Republicans as Harkin and a Democratic Hold was a virtual certain in if he did run, instead it is a now a possible GOP pick up.
Just think, Steve King, Iowa’s shame might give it a go.
Ugh.

About Firedoglake
Steve King is not a witch.
I wish that I believed there is a difference between the two parties actions. Both are wedded to the corporate rule that is destroying our democracy and our planet.
Dogs For Santorum and their travelling sweater vests will fetch support for King. As wile Michele’s Minions. Gonna be a fun 2014.
Good morning, pups. It’s Keller and Krugman today. In “Carrots for Doctors” Mr. Keller has a question: Can we pay our way to better, cheaper health care? In “Makers, Takers, Fakers” Prof. Krugman says Class warfare comes out into the open.
Here they are, and
Here’s Krugman’s blog.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. So January’s almost over… Am I the only one who feels that the weeks are just galloping by, or is that just a function of being an old fart? The kittens are getting restive, so it’s time for their breakfast and more tea for me. Have a great day.
Yeah, this election will attract a LOT of outside money for the GOP. Outside of King, who else on the GOP side might go for it?
Boxturtle (This may be just the fundraiser that Crossroads Karl needs to recover from his whipping)
Thanks, attaturk, that tossup seat is a joke, right? Sane enough to vote for Harkin /= to a vote for a nutjob.
Thanks, Marion, Karats for insurers might go well seeing as it’s Keller whose all about the privatization to ruin public services.
Now I’m off on the next leg of the journey to PA, wish the rain would go away.
Be safe. Driving in the rain seems to bring the nut jobs out on the roads, at least down here.
The weeks seem to be just galloping by, but I am an old fart too.
Boxturtle (Thanksgiving is over and I missed it?)
The rain yesterday wasn’t as bad as could be, makes truckdrivers take care of li’l ol’ lady drivers. Of course, I have learned that if you travel a reasonable distance behind a truck, it shelters the car from the wind effects and saves gas, and the drivers know that so when you’re doing it they let you. Funny times.
Harkin is the equivalent of what Lincoln Chafee was to the republican party, reasonable on a lot of issues, sell out when the chips were on the table, and of no influence any longer on the rest of the body. The sell out of Harry Reid on the filibuster, took the rest of the fun out of it for the old guy.
Morning Ruth,
Safe traveling to you. Glad you mentioned a safe distance behind the truckers.
I seem to attract tailgaters, and I’d love to be able to ‘break wind’ specifically for the ones who are close enough that I cannot see their vehicle’s hood for miles, even though there is plenty of room for them to pass.
Tom Latham(R-Teabag) shares the western Iowa Crazy with Steve King. He’s been a Congresscritter since the 1994 Contract on America wave. He might be running, too.
But Steve King’s rested and ready to rumble. He’s unstoppable.
Hey, thanks, it will be good, I waited for the ice yesterday to go away, took the southern route through MO which is slow, but safe, could have gone to St. Louis and hit ice and lotsa traffic, but chose No. Today got no big deal most of the way.
‘ He’s unstoppable.’
If you mean reason is no object, true.
Good morning early pups.
Thanks for the post Attaturk. The thought of your Steve King in the Senate makes me cringe. Although, he would fit right in with other idiots like Paul and that moran that got schooled by Sec Clinton last week.
Safe travels Ruth. Smart to tuck in behind a trucker. (if the spray isn’t too bad)
Thanks, and yes, safer that way too, they take care of us ol’ ladies.
Now getting off, thanks for good company.
Krugman among idiots on MoJoe this morning. WaPoo editorial board not the only ones who can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. yeah, you’re right until you’re wrong. Gah.
Happened to walk by the tv as he was asking Morning JOkE;
“If you’re projecting rising health care costs to create a benefit shortfall 20 years from now, why do you need a plan to cut benefits now?” JOkE was dumbfounded. Logic is not exactly his strength.
just read Krugman’s column (thanks,Marion).
oooh .., more talk about Krugman coming. this oughta be real…. Not.
Harkin a yes vote on destroying Iraq, 2002.
If he wanted appreciation for anything else he ever did in his political career, then he should have voted no.
I don’t remember that vote of Harkins’ being a yeah. I thought it was 76-24 in the Senate and he was a neah. As for King or Latham? The state of Iowa has 2/3rds of its’ population living east of the capital city. While those 2 swells may play well at the western edge of flyover country, I’m thinking their appeal dies around East Ames. They’re just not into the Christian crazy as much, past Des Moines, either. Plus, Obama has a good machine there. Hillary and Joe will be working the field to get the seed corn growing, as well. I think Harkin’s voting record would make him a pragmatic progressive, overall. He was a ‘Clone graduate but Hawkeyes in the East will have some big say, here. There will be plenty of money spent, to be sure. Sorry to see Tom leave but he’s served his state well.

Harkin “served his state well” by voting to destroy Iraq.
Harkin is a great man, and he will be genuinely missed — I supported his ’92 presidential bid, as I imagine many of us in here did — but he’s earned the right to stop and smell the roses.
That is very disappointing, but no one’s perfect.
Good riddance — Tom Harkin never met a snake oil salesman or a quack he didn’t want to support with federal dollars. He even backed homeopaths, which are like young earth creationists that actively defraud people.
If the war crimes trials ever happen, he can use the corn subsidies as mitigation during sentencing.
Sorry, I’m a nicer person on other topics, but anyone at his level who supported that mother of atrocities is damned.
I’m done; feel free to have the last word.
That your personal vision of utopia was not immediately achieved is not the same thing as “both sides are equally bad,” nor is it an excuse for you to sit on your lazy ass and whine about how everything’s all terrible and we should all just kill ourselves rather than working for real change with people not every jot and tittle of whose current views we agree with.
What you’re counseling here is despair, and it’s not only counter-factual, but dumb.
I don’t think it was counterfactual at all. I think it was a statement of reality.
The line “your personal vision of utopia” was just a throwaway jab.
Sorry, I’m late, but you’ve said a mouthful there. Sell sanke oil to the people who’d been shuttered by the inability to get around. As on city buses, for example. I could go on but, heh, you got pooh on more than your shoe, here dude.
