Oregon Ducks rated below Kansas St all tear by BCS laid it on 35-17 to take the Feista Bowl in Phoenix today. Like Hag I an a UO grad. Congrats to the Ducks.
I’ve tangled with bmaz a few times before. Most of the time I agree with him, but damn he’s tenacious when I don’t. In any case, he forces me to nail down my case. So it’s very helpful.
Why does anyone need anything so hokey as platinum coin. It is against the law for U.S. to abrogate its debt so no rationale req for U.S. to pay it and no need to inc debt ceiling wh is unconstitutional.
Well I’ve skipped out of the last few minutes of Downton Abbey (since I’ve already seen it) to say hi all.
Today I listened to Armed American Radio to see what they were talking about.
A few things of interest.
1) A bunch of Christian Schools sponsor the show.
2) They call Diane Feinstein a cockroach.
3) They read a letter from a Marine who is not going to register any of his weapons.
4) They like to hint at violence toward people who disagree with them.
5) They are the real victims of the Sandy Hook shooting
6) They won’t discuss the issue with anyone who is emotional about the shootings
7) They believe that they are being logical and that they know the facts
The pattern I seen between them and the right wing radio talkers and pundits is their projection (everything they do they say we do) for example, “The “anti-gunners” are sick for politicizing this tragedy. and their inability to place theirselves in the position of the other.
I’ve been thinking that there are a lot of people who find these arguments repugnant, but don’t know what to do since they don’t want to argue with them (plus as I know the people with the microphone usually win.
People say, “They aren’t doing their cause any favors” when they talk like this, but that is only if they are exposed to regular people.
They know that their true target core audience wants to be the victim and they like them to be hard core. In fact to be rational would mean to lose their hard core listeners.
I’m thinking about ways to make it clear to people that the NRA extremists have gone too far. They do not care for the safety of the majority their members or the general public. The inability to think first of the greater safety of everyone is a tragic flaw. And this flaw needs to be exposed and the people not be praised for it, but condemned for it.
If Obama went the 14th Amendment route, he’d have to directly violate 31USC3101, the current debt limit law, which he agreed to and signed. IMHO it would surely lead to a “constitutional crisis.”
By contrast 31USC5112(k) explicitly authorizes him to issue such coins. They might declare it an unconstitutional law but that would take some time.
Had a WONDERFUL goose dinner yesterday, late, in honor of New Years, great old-fashioned egg nog included. Had to shame guest from VT into searching it out. Apparently though VT is still a “dairy state,” local farmers have been mostly coopted by Cabot co-op.
But there’s really more to it. We cover our deficits with a mixture of borrowing and coining at a ratio of about 100 to 1. In 2011, coining put about $10B into the Treasury, which was about 1% of the deficit.
But, why should we stay at that ratio. We’re already paying $250B per year in interest. The GOP are threatening to prevent borrowing unless we cut entitlements. The the right is continually telling us that we can’t afford to fix our roads and educate our kids because we should leave them a large debt.
I’d like to see that ratio reversed. Or at least made less extreme.
The big SE Conference athletes are hard to run over…they will dog the Irish quarterback. Controlling the line of scrimmage the offensive Bama backs will control the ball by eating the clock. It will be a brutal contest but a good entertaining evening for college football fans. I would rather read, row or run.
Either Obama stops spending or he doesn’t. If he keeps on spending, he’s in direct violation of a federal law that he signed. If he stops spending, you know the consequences better than I.
That’s exactly what I’m trying to do with the platinum coin stuff.
Every economist I read claims to believe that the government has a proverbial printing press from which to issue money to pay the bills. But, they never actually identify it. Most claim that the Fed has it, but the Fed cannot directly loan money to the Treasury, and the bonds they buy up on the open market count toward the debt limit.
But, in fact, that proverbial printing press is the Mint, and I’m recommending that we use it.
My question is… the FED can buy junk from the banks then that goes on the debt right?
No, not unless the junk is a Treasury bond, in which case, it was already on the nation’s debt.
The other shit that they buy, they pay for with fresh money that create on the spot from thin air, i.e., they simply increment the seller’s account balance by the price at which they’re buying the junk, and then they list the junk on the balance sheet as an asset at the same price. So, their books balance: the credit in the seller’s account is a liability and the junk is an asset of equal value. What could be sweeter?
Per John Kenneth Galbraith in 1975: “The process by which banks create money is so simple that it repels the mind.”
Thanks enjoy the National Championship game. BMAZ is pretty haughty in his viewpoints sometime but a smart lawyer who adds a lot to Emptywheel Marcy’s site theyt have already handed me my hat so..
I usually agree with him and always appreciate, most especially today. He definitely made me tighten up my arguments. And that constutionality angle was one on which I’d not been attacked before. It always used to be about inflation, etc. Now it’s getting down to legalisms. “That wasn’t what that law was intended for.” Etc.
I finally decided today that I’ve got put together a FAQ on this matter.
Aloha, lln pups, from a soggy Hilo town…! Is this Love…?
Hi CT. How are you doing?
Aloha, ww…! Pretty decent, how’s your neck of the woods…?
Here’s a classic ‘Jawaiian’ jam… Sitting In My Room…

Can’t get enough Anuhea… Simple Love…

Today, bb…? If I recall the Fiesta was Thursday…! ;-)
How’s your bay doing tonite…?
So, we’re getting some rain too.
I’ve been spending way too much time the last few days pushing the platinum-coin idea, but now have to get back to work on other things.
I’ll be watching how the Irish do.
It’s a great pursuit in my estimation, despite bmaz’s dour opinion…! ;-)
I don’t care as long as Te’o lives up to the heisman hype…! ;-)
hiya CT, firgods

Damn he’s good. But the spread is 10 points in ‘Bama’s favor.
Aloha, PPD…! How’s your slice of Cali…?
Your right but that won;t change the score. Quaaack!

Definitely, me too.
It’s been a quiet day here. How’s everything on the island?
True, eCAHN, but, we still need some sort of Hokey-Pokey for the unwashed masses to glom onto…! ;-)
If it actually works, all’s the better…! ;-)
hiya eCAHN — how’s everything in the valley?
We’re talking about neither/neither so hardly worth considering, bc both are a waste of fonts.
But if you want Occam’s razor, take the path that debt ceiling is unconstitutional, not a silly idea like platinum coin.

Why buy into the righty extreme. Change the meme to something more sensible.
Coopted by Cabot Co-op — sounds like Josh Apatow film project. I like goose, eggnog – not so much.
*heh* “What A Wonderful World”
Well, it’s not worth mentioning the obvious, wh is to stop spending on military.
Until lefties harp on that point, the substance is not addressed. Platinum coin is silly.
…I would rather read, row or run…
More power to ya, bb…! ;-)

Nite to all. Be well.

They’ve been harping on the point with no success ever since I was an undegrad, and that was a long time ago.
*heh* Redemption Song…
Sweet dreams, eCAHN…! *g*
My question is… the FED can buy junk from the banks then that goes on the debt right? A crime syndicate in action as the banksters run the FED!
Sounds like a delicious time with friends, all the same. Been to NH before, aaaahyeaaah.
Doortmunder beer is mighty good.
The scenery in the IZ video is awesome…goes well with my studies of biological evolution that I am into at the moment.
Did eCAHN nod off?
In response to bigbrother @ 43
