Happy Friday Suz!
happy friday margaret! how ya doing tonight?
Been writing on my book girly girl. How are you?
sweet! i’m so glad you are writing it :) i’m hanging in and hanging on. the snow finally melted away today so i don’t have to worry when i go out to the mailbox tomorrow.
Wanna peek at a chapter?
i sure would.. you still got my email addy?
Write on! It’s great to see our internet friends contributing to the education and betterment of our sometimes sorry general population. I look forward to reading whatever you write.
If it starts with a ten and ends with a gmail I do.
hey dearie — how’s the ‘nard tonight?
that be the one ….. (rubbing hands together) i’m so excited to get a peak…
All’s good in the ‘nard, thanks. Chilly for CA, but still good. I’m thrilled that some of our FDL friends are writing stuff. Good on them.
Okey doke. File’s on the way.
Thanks Dearie. I’ve recently been reminded of why I began writing it in the first place and have worked hard on it all this week and plan to devote my weekend to it. As long as the juices flow anyway.
“The ‘nard”? As in Oxnard? I like Oxnard.
warming up… second night in a row i’m still above freezing when lln went up… supposed to get rain tomorrow and it usually is warmer when it rains
thanks margaret…. i’ll read it when after tonight’s thread is over so i can give it the attention it deserves….
i’m so glad that your writing muse has kicked in
Yep. I’m a California girl, born in Pittsburg and grew up in San Jose and around. After 25 years in the MidWest, I came back to California and settled in Oxnard. I like it very much.
Okay but I gotta have feedback. You’re only the second pair of eyes besides mine who has seen anything of it.
i spent my teenage years in the pleasant hill/concord area
i promise — pinky swear even — that i will give you feedback before i go to bed tonight
And what I like about California is that we aren’t Mayflower people….. we’re all a bunch of immigrants or Okies/Arkies. I don’t know why that appeals to me so much except that there is less pretense, perhaps.
I was stationed at Pt Magu for a few weeks while we were doing some experimentation that I’m still not allowed to discuss. Nothing nefarious mind you but the military absurdly required us to keep secrets that were routinely published in Aviation Week.
LMAO! Thanks but I’ll probably hafta pinky swear to read it after I wake up tomorrow!
deal!
I remember when Texans were unpretentious. I’m still of the opinion that real Texans aren’t pretentious at all and the noisy ones are transplants, like the Bushes.
Greatgrandfather buried in Danville. Grandparents lived in Pittsburg forever. Other grandparents born in San Francisco. Dad born on the farm in Cupertino. My roots go as deep as they go. One great-grandmother who grew up in an orphanage in the Haight. Her whole family died of flu and then TB. California in my soul.
i think the fact so many folks moved to ca is why so many folks are so accepting about differences in ca.
Lucky you. Pt. Mugu is in a lovely area. Did you live on base? There’s still not much out there. Good friend is in IT … was at Mugu, now at Pt. Hueneme. Can you pronounce that? :)
wow… you are a californian through and through. my dad was navy and we settled in ca right before he retired after 20 years. after we moved to alameda, my mom’s sister and her husband moved to danville. after my parents divorce, my mom lived in clayton and then lafayette until her and her husband retired to palm springs. my dad moved to sf where he and his wife lived until their retirement and they moved to carmichael.
my brother still lives in the santa clara valley — my sister is in the phoenix area near mom now.
I lived in San Diego most of the time I was in the service and I came to find out that part of California is pretty intolerant in some cases. Some of them seemed to have an awfully high opinion of themselves.
Yep, I wasn’t there long enough to get off base housing. And it’s pronounced Why – knee – me.
my experiences were primarily in the sf bay area so i should have qualified that…..
I’ve been to Alameda too. I boarded the Carl Vinson there. Got to see a lot of SF too.
I’m laughing! Only someone who has been here can pronounce it. We all laugh about newbies who try to say the name. If you are ever around for another look/see… give me a call!
I sure will! I’m of the increasing opinion that Texas is a lost cause and I’m more than casually looking for jobs out west.
we used to do grocery shopping at the commisary in alameda after dad retired from the navy and before he started working at the presidio as a butcher. he ended up retiring from there too
San Diego seems to be ultra-conservative, though I don’t know why. Everywhere I ever lived in California (San Jose, Long Beach, Mountain View, Hayward, Oxnard) was pretty ‘balanced’….. just never saw the kind of prejudice I hear about (or that I witnessed when I did junior high and high school in Houston, TX). California is horribly expensive, but I don’t shop much or get hair/nails done….. I just live.
I went across the Bay bridge to San Fransisco, back to Alamdea under the Bay bridge on BART and then out to sea back under the Bay Bridge on the deck of the Vinson.
I blame all the damned squids there.
how forking kewl! that’s a trifecta!
Well, keep me in mind. I’ve got space. I’m a mess of a house keeper but a lot of fun!
when i was a newlywed living in sf, i had a poster in my living room that said ‘fuck housework’.
my mother was not amused but i sure was
Well, I’m certain the latter is true anyway! :)
Like this? I spotted this yesterday while looking for something else.
if not that one, very similar to that one… i think the text was more ornate but that fucking broom was broken :)
Aloha, Suz and lln pups…! I hope all is well…!
One of my second cousins got married at the Presidio when I was a kid. It was such a beautiful setting. Love that place! Did you ever go to Spenger’s for a fish dinner in Berkeley — it was originally a bait shop that my grands and even my dad used to buy bait at. Then a restaurant.
Konban wa
aloha tut — how’s paradise tonight?
Where did you live in SF? My dad’s family home is in the Mission. His grandfather had a dairy in the Excelsior. My grandma and her good-Catholic-son ended up in the Sunset.
tis part of the national park service now. i don’t remember spenglers but do remember going to that italian place in berkeley that had been around for decades…wish i could remember the name. is where i had dinner before attending the jimi hendrix concert at the oakland colisium in april, ’69
i first lived in a flat on 8th avenue in the richmond and my dad was in a flat at 19th and judea. he later moved out to noreiga and 27th in the sunset and my first x and i moved out to mt davidson behind tower market.
And can you see it by the dashboard light?
as long as he’s not praying for the end of time all is good
To hurry up and arrive? Yeah, that wouldn’t be a good sign.
Fun to re-travel. I took all my kids to see where the dairy used to be on Naples. The house is still there. And still looks great after 100 years. Area is, of course, all built out. My great-grandfather sold off the land over the years and my grandfather was not willing to be a dairyman. He ended up driving a delivery truck for Gumps and The Emporium.
I’m getting wound down and sleepy pups. Nighters.
its cold and lonely in the deep dark night
g’nite margaret
Happy and colorful dreams, Margaret.
i did that a few times over the years with my girls to the house in pleasant hill but they really didn’t seem to enjoy those drives as much as others. i’ve not been in the bay area proper since 03 so i’m sure so much has changed since then — and up in coco county since the late 90′s when my mom moved to p/s.
Took my kids to see my other great-grandparents house on Alston in Berkeley, down by the bay. It’s now an insurance office. We had a lovely tour. Fun to get a sense of how the immigrants from Denmark, Germany, Denmark and Wales settled in … all on the west coast.
so many in the sf area… i remember going to the italian/american hall in sf and visiting a scandanavian hall/museum down in the castro (i could be mis-remembering that one). so many cultures…. ate russian perogies i got in the mission and the best thai out on geary in the richmond. so much of sf bay area culture is tied to food
Food…. yes. I remember, as a kid, going to the wharf and seeing mounds of dungeness crabs…. mounds. Not so anymore. And my dad and 5 siblings growing up in the Mission were introduced to so many different people. We always, for example, had ravioli as a side dish at Thanksgiving because one of the girls had Italian friends. I still like to serve ravioli at Thanksgiving right along with the traditional turkey and fixings.
i learned to make and have tamales as a side dish at christmas from a neighbor back when jen was a wee one. i remember going to fisherman’s wharf and there were bunches of crab and other seafood everywhere ya looked.. i learned to love having my salad after dinner from my italian father-in-law.
Fun to reminisce, Suz…. and travel back to lovely places. Stay warm and enjoy the new year. And happy dreams!
token’s giving me ‘the look’. guess i should let him out to save a tree and then settle down with margaret’s chapter. thanks for letting me hang out with ya tonight — hope to see ya tomorrow night for cartoons.
g’nite all
Yes…. tamales at Christmas… southern California/AZ taught me that. I make some good ones, too.
It is like coming home .. to be away .. come back to wish all the Pups a Happy and Peaceful New year and just read the sharing camraderie … too late to connect but always as close as I can be .. be well all …
Good morning, pups. Today we’ve got Blow, Nocera and Collins. In “Escaping Slavery” Mr. Blow says the idea that progress toward racial harmony would or should be steady and continuous is fraying. Mr. Nocera has sent us “Over the Cliff and Back.” A new year. A new Congress. Could we get some new results out of our lawmakers in Washington? No, Mr. Nocera. This has been another example of SASQ. Ms. Collins has “The 2013 Pop Quiz.” It’s time to test your New Year’s knowledge. People, there is to be no Googling to look for the right answer! (I got 5 out of 8 correct.)
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got apple cranberry muffins today. I’m still a bit cross this morning. Mr. Marion in Savannah went to the pulmonologist’s office on Thursday and was prescribed an antibiotic and prednisone. The prescription was allegedly called or faxed to the pharmacy at 2:00. By almost 4:00 the pharmacy said they had no record of it yet and to pick it up on Friday. So on Friday morning at about 9:00 or 9:15 we were at the pharmacy and they STILL said they had no record of the prescription. They called the doctor’s office and got voice mail. So we came home and Mr. Marion in Savannah called and also got voice mail. I was then well and truly annoyed and said if we hadn’t heard from them in half an hour we were going to go to the office and get the damn prescription and hand carry it to the pharmacy. They called and swore they had re-faxed it to the pharmacy, so off we went again to find that the damn pharmacy STILL couldn’t find it. When informed that it had just been faxed over they managed to scrounge it out and he finally got his medication about 18 hours later than he should have. Yesterday afternoon he ran a fever to 102°, which came down rapidly after he started the antibiotic, but had the damn pharmacy been on the ball he most likely wouldn’t have had that fever. [SNARL] Sorry about the rant. Some tea will make me feel better, I’m sure. Have a great day.
good to see your fonts again tearloch….
(((marion))) i hope mr marion is feeling better soon
