The Christmas Jug Band — Santa Lost A Ho at The Masonic Lodge, Mill Valley, CA, December 21, 2009;
with bonus track: Lonesome Reindeer Blues.
What’s on your mind?
g’evening pups — how’s everyone doing tonight?
Hi, Suz. I’ve been reading recipes for Feast of the 7 Fishes…. Italian Christmas Eve. Looking forward to visiting the fish market with my daughter.
Aloha. I’m in the (hopefully), final stages of the flu and I’ve been sleeping so much that I find myself wide awake tonight. How’s the leg Suze?
hey dearie — what kinda fish are in the 7 fishes? how’s the ‘nard tonight?
Glad you’re feeling better, Margaret. Will you get a break from work over the holidays?
aloha margaret.. i’m so sorry to hear you had the flu but its good that you are feeling better. the leg is eh…. not as cranky now that its raining like hell and a balmy 41 degrees. it was 39 at 1pm today and had been in the 30′s the past couple days.
does your job have sick pay?
Yep. Not much but some. Better than most in the trade anyway.
thank goodness for that. *whew* i’m sure your kittah has been glad to have you around more, even if you were sick
I get the 24th and 25th off and then the 1st. I could take more but as half of the company is off doing family stuff and I really have no family to speak of, I’m working the days we’re open.
Glad the leg is better btw. I’ll bet you are too!
i gotta admit, i love the creativity in the second video with the reindeer ‘singing’…..
Chilly in the ‘nard! Supposed to be in the 60′s tomorrow…. I look forward to that.
Almost any kind of fish is welcome…. Christmas Eve dinner based on Catholics not eating meat at certain holidays. We’re all lapsed or semi-lapsed, but it’s fun to bring on the Italian heritage of my daughter’s husband whose grandparents were all from Sicily.
I’m Danish/German heritage. Gonna start with some pickled herring in sour cream. Then some cracked crab and chilled shrimp along with tiny baked potatoes topped with a bit of caviar. You gotta laugh! CostCo had caviar at the Santa Barbara/Goleta store (but not at the Oxnard store) on huge discount….. farmed USA. I just thought it would be fun. Then maybe some steamed mussels and then some white fish with cioppino sauce over linguine. And then one other ….
Should be fun. Maybe I’ll make some tuna sandwiches for the boys. “:)
We are so impatient for Christmas snow. Tomorrow in the 40′s and rain. Depressing.
i’m getting by which is good. everything is on hold until feb when we find out if the leg bone is alive or dead where it was crushed. if its dead, that’s not good as we are talking at least two additional surgeries and bone graft — most likely cadaver bone since mine are ‘crap’.
oh yummy!!! that sound you just heard was my tummy growling…
heya ce — it looked like i was gonna have some last night but pppfffft. when do ya head to your dads and what’s the forecast there?
Aloha, Suz and lln pups…! It’s been nothing but doom and gloom here, we’ve had over an 1.25″ fall over the past 24 hours with more on tap…!
aloha tut — we’ve had close to an inch here already and more to come also. how did you spend your soggy day in paradise? mine was spent indoors – my favorite way
Looks like we will leave Saturday morning for MrCE’s parents place for one night. They live in southeast PA north of Philadelphia. Dad lives south one hour from there. No snow is predicted in PA, but Cleveland may get hit Saturday for a bit. Still, too warm to stay on the ground. We are all having a sad about too much rain and no snow.
Oh crap. I didn’t know that could happen. Come on bone life!
forecast is for dry christmas eve and christmas here :) i’m really glad since i’m going over to do christmas with jen’s family on christmas eve. i have a 6 mile stretch of narrow and curvy road over the skyline summit (1,000ft) but its a much shorter stretch than what i had to navigate over the coast range when i was at the coast. how long will it take for you guys to drive there?
Not to be macabre, but it is things like this that make me seriously think about body donation. I mean, if my leg could help yours, why wouldn’t one donate? My family discussions… not so great.
7 hours if we speed at 75 or 80. I read aloud to MrCE from the New Yorker.
the glued together section really wasn’t glued.. it was in a matrix of goop that promotes bone growth. if its alive, then its only two surgeries — one to remove all the hardware they put in and the second is the total knee replacement. if its not…. *knocking on wood and thinking positive thoughts*… i’m not gonna really think about that until february
Looks like planets are very, very common in the universe. Tau Ceti has at least five planets, despite being metals poor and thus not expected to. It also has a Kuiper belt at least ten times as dense as ours. I wonder if anybody is ready to rework the Drake equation yet. Think I’ll take a stab at it over the holidays.
i’ve been a ‘take anything ya can use’ donor status for years and both my girls know it. donation is not just organs…
don’t speed! don’t want you being a donor yet ce
iirc there was a show on science channel that showed the drake equation and it worked out to thousands and thousands. by what magnitude do ya think it will grow?
I’ve already made my intentions clear in that regard. Harvest my organs. Somebody could get a lot more mileage out of my heart for example. Just not until I’m done with them.
OK! Anyway, I’m being called to bed, well, yelled actually, and so I must go. Glad to say hello, and I’ll check in soon.
Exponentially. 10 to the 5th at least I’m thinking. The Drake equation used the conventional wisdom back then that planets were fairly rare.

hey tuez — how’s florida tonight? steph’s in colorado and is freezing her tushkie off – claims florida spoiled her in the few short months she’s been there.. thinned her blood or something…
g’nite mr and mrs ce
Been applying for jobs in your state and some other western ones. I’ve decided to give up Texas as a bad job if I can find work elsewhere.
Not really digging any of the jugs on that jug band.
It’s been absolutely gorgeous here. In the low 80s, sunny, no humidity, no rain.
Friday’s high is only gonna be 62. You can be sure I’ll be visiting LLN in Polartec fleece.
hey uct1 — tis a side gig that dan hicks does in the holidays. its not for everyone
how ya doing tonight?
knew you would enjoy that. i was trying not to laugh when she was bemoaning how she’s not a coloradan anymore and it is all florida’s fault
I think the Drake equation used ten percent of known stars having planets, maybe fewer and it was early on in the equation. Since it’s becoming more clear every day that probably all stars of the F,G and K classes have planets, (and perhaps O,B,A and M too), the equation now becomes a question of the number of stable stars, rather than stars just like ours.
Come on bone life!
I’m with you. Toward that end I wanted to put up Allan Sherman’s “I See Bones,” but it appears to be one of the few songs YouTube doesn’t have.
i think your memory is matching mine…. is why i asked about the magnitude… gonna be a jaw dropping number
hey blue — how ya doing? are you ready for your book salon saturday? i’m so excited for you — its gonna be a great salon (and your book is forking great too)
You guys must be more scientifically handy than I am — my only association with Drake’s is Ring-Dings.
Florida will spoil a person quick. I’m not entirely sure it’s anything more than the fact that one gets used to running around half naked all the time, and actually having to wear clothes seems such a chore.
Indeed. Especially if the M stars tend to have planets and I have no reason to suspect they won’t since we already know the smaller Ks do. Like I said, it becomes a question of stability after that, rather than stellar class. Astronomers are notoriously cautious though. I’m betting in the 80 percent range having multiple planets.
Am glad you like it, Suzanne.
And yes, I’m completely jazzed about the Book Salon on Saturday. So many political giants have done one, and there I’ll be with my frivolous peanut butter magnum opus.
yeah but you got me beat to spades when it comes to peanut butter. each new recipe i come across while reading your book, i want to get right up and make it…. i’m gonna gain weight dood — i end up pacifying myself with a spoonful of peanut butter
we figure she will just be re-acclimated to colorado about the time she has to return to florda *snicker*
gonna be interesting to find out how accurate your prediction is margaret
Peanuts were just calling out for someone to love them and you heard the call. It takes a special person :)
tis not frivolous dood… tis the biography of peanut butter in america
What’s on my mind is that firefox is chewing up my CPU, and stalling out for 10-15 seconds at a time. Truly annoying. Trying out Safari.
I don’t know if we’ll ever get that far in my lifetime, though Kepler has exceeded expectations. Still, I’ll take a whack at the arithmetic soon and come back with a crude estimate in the not too distant future.
Even if she returns to our idea of winter, it will be warmer than Colorado.
peanut butter song
hey masaccio — good to see your fonts at lln… they have been doing a LOT of updates lately. how ya been dood?
would be a fascinating diary when its done margaret
Do you have the latest FF release? It’s not so hard on memory anymore, at least on my machine.
she was really missing the snow when she was in florida and now she’s too forking cold to enjoy it. poor baby
It’s true, it’s true…the siren song of peanut butter was one I could no more resist than ancient sailors could resist the mermaids…
And thank you for your kind words as well, Suzanne…
dood, you are one of us — you are being featured at book salon this saturday — and your book is great — why wouldn’t i have kind words *laughing* i’m so forking excited!!!
Not a bad thought. With that, I may be able to sleep now. Oya all!
That’s the best version!
If you’d like, during the book salon, I’ll gladly do totally unscientific research into how long it takes, heretofore, swear there were none in my house, sugar ants to find the spoon with peanut butter residue that is sitting on the kitchen counter.
I’m thinking less than an hour.
Night Margaret and hope you feel better soon.
peanut butter man
the marathons — that video was much better than this one
Ah yes, the Tuezday Sugar Ant Experiment. First, Newton’s apple, then Darwin’s Voyage of the Beagle and now…
jimmie buffet even
Do you mean you don’t like the narrator’s “Breather” voice in the introduction…”Hey, baby…the Marathons…peanut butter!”
i’m just not into watching a 45 spin around and around and around…
What an interesting clip (and what an odd movie it looks like) — this is the first of heard of that! Thanks for expanding my horizons!
Research is tedious but I’m up to it.
Truth: until a couple of years ago, I couldn’t stand peanut butter. Then one day, in the store, my eyes fell on a jar of Skippy…
glad to help. iirc, joe black is death — its a remake of that death takes a holiday movie from back in the 40′s or 50′s iirc….
That’s fascinating…normally adults who didn’t eat pb as kids don’t like it, because they’re put off by the sticky texture.
Ah yes, yes, that sounds right.
as i’ve gotten older i’ve rediscovered it and its one of my favorite snacks… a big glob on a tablespoon and i’m a happy camper. when i was a young thang, i loved chunky but now i’m a smooth kinda gal
i always liked that death takes a holiday movie… all black and white and whimsical and yet such a dark subject. never saw joe black
Be sure that the glob isn’t too big and that you swirl it around on your tongue a little to break it up. People have actually choked to death on pb, and the risk is greatest when you eat it straight out of the jar, not with anything else, such as bread. I eat it out of the jar, so I try to be careful.
Nor me neither.
i don’t eat it all at once.. tis more like its an ice cream cone … i lick and try to avoid gravity causing it to slide off the spoon :)
I’ve basically rediscovered it too, for some reason. But even as a kid, I preferred smooth over chunky.
I also discovered it’s way easier to “pill” a dog with peanut butter than cheese. Peanut butter never fails.
hey tuez — the a christmas story marathon starts on tbs monday…. they are running it notstop from 5pm mon – 5pm tues
A very sensible technique.
token is so food suspicious — even now when he gets a wee dab of peanut butter he licks it suspiciously until he’s sure there’s nothing in there. i tried peanut butter one time and he has never forgotten.
*sigh* i have to have liquid meds for him or two other people to hold him while he is forced to take a pill. liquids he’s fine with – just squirt in his mouth and he’s licking his lips and a happy camper.
Well, you need to use the old pill a horse trick on Token. Crush the pill, add a little water, draw into a syringe, squirt in mouth. Be sure not to put the syringe too far into mouth, or he might aspirate.
Cheap American cheese slices dogs seem to love, as well as Brie. I think the salt confuses them.
I don’t have cable. I even looked for it on the local channels and couldn’t find it. Seems I missed the “window” or something and Netflix doesn’t carry it (no doubt thanks to fuckin’ windows of opportunity for distributors).
Guys, I’m in the process of turning into a pumpkin, so will regretfully take my leave of you. Buenas noches…
i tried cheese too. i think he is really good at detecting pills in food. i’ve had to crush his pills and put them in sugar water and suck that up the syringe to get them into him. tis easier to just get the meds in liquid form and that way i don’t have to worry about getting all the pill into the syringe. if i don’t crush it, he spits it out
fucking fuckers. fuck
evening, Suzzzzz … firegods
hey ppd — how’s the monterey bay tonight?
aw crap… i snagged the happy lucky 99 but it doesn’t count since i was greeting…..
congrats to ppd for snagging the happy lucky (substituted) 98!!!
cold and clear – hard freeze warning tonight
My last dog was like that, couldn’t fake him out at all. Fortunately, he was always healthy and rarely needed pills but he was a pill to pill. How come they never chew anything unless it has a pill in it?
wow. still not had a freeze warning in portland this year… weather dood tonight said our last freeze was in april.
he’s not a chewer period. i swear, he thinks he is part cat. i had to yell at him yesterday because he bolted out the door chasing a bird… thankfully this time he stopped running and came back. i think that last ‘bad dog’ he got had an impact… at least i like to think so :)
I’m in need of a pillow. See ya all tomorrow night.
Eat your Peanut Butter!!! :)
token needs to save a tree and needs to save it now. he’s not gonna like that its still pouring outside but…
thanks for letting me hang out with ya tonight — g’nite all
expecting more rain this weekend — no problem, we need the water.
