Turkish news is reporting that NBC News Senior Correspondent Richard Engel has been missing in Syria since Thursday. Turkish journalist Aziz Akyavaş is also missing.
Engel has been one of the few western journalists reporting from within Syria. NBC is not commenting at this time.
As Alexander Abad-Santos notes at The Atlantic Wire, Twitter has pretty much rendered the news blackouts previously observed by news agencies when journalists went missing a thing of the past.

*gulp*
:(
Will keep him in my thoughts for a good outcome – he’s one of the best.
Oh man I really hope that he is safe. This is terrible news.
Tweeted.
How awful.
Not that it matters who is responsible, he *is* American and US policy is anti-Assad… Do we have any further information?
No, the only media that’s reporting it is Turkish news at this time, and that’s all they are saying.
Whoa…
I wonder if Maddow will comment on it tonight. He’s been on her show a number of times…
Engel’s reporting is top-notch. But he takes a lot of risks. Hope he’s OK.
Oh my! Prayers for him. A great reporter that contributes so much.
G-D Dammit I knew this was gonna happen one of these days.
Oh, no. I’ve come to trust his reporting. And of course, just because he seems so personable and likable, I suppose. The last few years have been terrible for journalists around the world. I really hope he and Mr. Akyavas will turn up safe and sound.
Shoto, yes my first thought was about Maddow-she and Richard Engel seem to be friends.
This does not sound like good news. Richard is one of the best foreign correspondents I know. My hope is for the best.
I agree. Lots of places I’d rathter be missing from than Syria.
Engel is excellent. Keeping my fingers crossed for his safety.
I’ve worried about his safety for a long time, but especially since the death of NYT reporter Anthony Shadid in February, again in Syria. Engel has been exceptionally dedicated, as was Shadid.
His surname is misspelt in your header, FWIW.
Twitter-era notwithstanding, if those working directly to help Richard Engel think it is beneficial for media attention to be kept to a minimum, I hope everyone will respect that.
Engel is possibly the only reporter from the Middle Eastern theatre, as it were, who seems to have empathy with people and a lively sense of what it is like to live in a war zone. I can’t think of another reporter at any rate, and I hope Engel is well.
It is way, way too mortish all over the world this holiday season.
Fearless dude. Hopefully safe.
He’s one of the good guys, hope he OK…
Engel speaks fluent Arabic. He understands so much more than the reporters who don’t. He’s clearly a truly very decent, thoughtful, competent and honest person. His reports from Egypt and other places during the Arab Spring were extremely valuable.
I join all the others who are hoping for the best.
Sweet Mother of Jesus, protect him.
