Gayla Peevey — I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas, on The Ed Sullivan Show, October, 1953.
What’s on your mind?
g’evening pups
Why? This makes no sense.
hey ecahn — that’s the whole point – tis a novelty song :) how was your day?
I have no clue what a novelty song is.
My day was OK. My electric mixer bit the dust while I was starting my Xmas baking projects. May be able to borrow another.
OTOH, my bee guy delivered 12 pounds of spun honey. Very dark & rich in flavor.
Who could complain about that.
what are you baking? a novelty song is nonsensical, humorous, etc.
Hey you two! Howdy big time.
hey ce — how’s cleveland tonight?
Did the pumpkin spice bread & my mon’s fruit cakes. Tried to make Russian tea cakes (round balls of shortbread rolled in powdered sugar + choc mint version of same) today when my mixer blew a gear. Borrowed one is less robust than 5 year old one that busted, so anticipatory anxiety abounds.
Got to make 7 dozen cookies for kiddies (in their 30s) in next week. Smashing butter & sugar with a “modern” mixer is asking for trouble, I now know.
Clear, cool and star filled. We are watching (way, way too late, Tinker, Tailor. I’ll have to watch again as it is way too complicated at this late hour).
evening, Suzzz, CE, eCAHN
BTW Suzanne,
Fruitcake doused with Old Classic each night instead of once a week. Smells delicious.
Hehaay!
i learned that when i was trying to smash butter and sugar together using large salad forks….. no mixer and no pastry cutter…. was your mixer a big stand mixer like a kitchenaid?
be sure to check for the meteor shower tonight… last night and tonight are the best for viewing
hey ppd — how’s monterey bay tonight?
woohoo — well on its way to a proper drunkenness!
My mom’s fruit cakes are white dough and not the dark kind that are passed on from generation to generation, adding rum with each regifting.
Or at least that’s what my friends delude me by saying.
WTF, I like the fruit cake so who cares what they say.
MrCE and I will be spending Christmas with my recently widowed Dad. At first we were going to split up and be with each parent, but that plan has changed. Every family has to make choices, and I will miss my children this year.
What’s up with you buckeyes tonight, CE?
what kinda white dough? like a regular cake dough or a spongecake dough?
Just fine, thanks Suzzz – hope you’re feeling well tonight
Nope. When I replace the one that blew, I’ll get one that is more robust. B&D is NOT the brand it usta be.
Large forks seem like too much work if you have as many cookies to make as I do.
oh ce — so good that he was able to go with you! your kids are grownups now and your dad needs you
i’m hanging in :) are you still riding or has winter put a crimp in that?
This one is very dark, but my friend gives me one every year that is white. We love them all. Love to all bakers.
it was a pain in the keester for sure and i was only trying to make a simple small recipe of butter cookies….. they turned out horribly wrong
The best thing is that it is clear and chilly. I’ll have to go out to see the stars — oh, on my new glorious deck!
He is thrilled that we are coming. My Dad is such a love.
you are going to have a wonderful time!
Hmmm. 2 pounds candied fruit. 7 eggs, 5 (?) cups white flour, chopped nuts. blah blah blah. If you want the real recipe I’ll go downstairs, retrieve it and type it in. I soak the candied “fruit” in kirschwasser.
It is supposed to make 2 large loafs. In recent years I made 1 biggied & 3 smallies. This year I decided to make 3 smallies & 6 muffin sizes. Seems like a good compromise for a HH that can’t eat so many BIG sweets.
no need to go downstairs ecahn. i think muffin sizes are a great idea!
Yes, we will. And I’m taking fruitcake, nuts, cookies and music. Funny how so many people are gone for the holidays already, and it is just halfway through December.
Mostly riding indoors while dry, warm days are the exception. Still getting in 3 to 4 times a week. Want to maintain condition so I’m ready for next season of centuries.
Not only that, but am able to give away excess baking to friends who will actually, ya know, eat it.
i realized today that next week is the week before christmas. i’m gonna have to get cranking on my christmas shopping and baking/cooking. i’m for sure making bacon jam and other goodies.
do you have a stationary setup at home?
So you had a Holodeck built with its own planetarium — Cleveland’s really ahead of the curve these days, CE. Be sure to load the Geminid meteor shower program tonight.
my neighbors showed up tonight on their way home from a church social and wanted me to have some of their banana split surprise. it was in a huge casserole pan and they insisted i take a big chunk. it looks yummy!!!
edit — cake not surprise
Uptown looks pretty nice, with MOCA and all…let me find a link.
Missed your horseback riding history. Had a small amount in distant history of my own.
Just a tripod trainer where the back wheel is locked against a resistant wheel so every gear ratio is available. Usually ride between 30 mins and 2 hours at a shot.
Don’t go to a dentist anytime soon.
I’m a road cycle whisperer, eCAHN. Intermediate to long distance, about 400 to 500 miles a month.
it works so is a good thing. i see these late late nite ads on the teevee machine for home bike trainers, all computerized and ya know they have to cost an arm and a leg.
i went in and got a slice.. its really really good and not too sweet. has pineapple, cherries, and nuts and lotsa whipped cream in addition the banana and a really light white cake. no sauce so i can really taste the fruit
Suzzz — those are stand alone trainers, and they are waaay expensive. Mine was about $125 over 20 years ago.
P.S. Never buy anything advertised on late night teevee.
Aloha, Suz and lln pups, I just got home from a very spirited OH General Assembly tonite…! ;-)
they are horrible ads with lottsa yellow on the attire etc. those late late nite tv ads are terrible and loud. thank goodness some rule goes into effect at midnight tonight that mandates the ads can be no louder than the program it is being shown on.
aloha tut? how spirited?
Evening, llners!
hey bg — how’s nm tonight?
I got a few things into the mail today, cut a bit of the fruitcake and sent some. I’ve been baking for a few days this week.
Some new faces showed up, one a true Hawaiian ‘noble’, and, another who has been in the Isles for all of 4 months, it was quite the robust discussion…! I love the diversity on display at any given GA…! ;-)
Late night teevee merchandise, like a fiscal cliff, bait and switch at its best.
CT, I attended my first Police Oversight Committee meeting this afternoon. I got a word for it: fucked. Our police have a DoJ investigation underway due to the high number of them killing this year.
whatcha guys got up your sleeve for the holidays?
iirc, you use brandy for your fruitcakes
hiya CT – were they making particularly unappetizing sausage at tonight’s meeting? When the gears of government grind slowly, something comes out the other end.
That is true. But not every day like ce.
Monday morning we’ll be supporting our teachers sign waving efforts to start with, and, an OLB action tbd for them too, amongst some other actions on tap for January…!
she uses scotch… ecahn mentioned soaking her fruit it kirschwasser and also said friends soak some in rum.
sweet
You have really been a champ, with the GAs, CT.
*heh* We’re gathering material to launch a serious investigation against our Mayor’s illicit leveraging of $10 Million in Muni Bonds into $3 Billion…! Stay tuned…! ;-)
*rubbing hands together in gleeful anticipation* wow tut
in the old days, we’d make savarin cakes with kirsch or grand marnier – delicious.
i love all the different ways folks prepare holiday cakes with alcohol…
Our mayor just did the most incredible power grab, but a group of citizens have launched a lawsuit over redistricting, and if we win, and we should, I have been thinking of “next steps.” He has turned out to be a real bastard.
yuck. so many folks are in politics nowadays for the power grab and money and not to serve the public. fuckers
I have had to quit attending City Council meeting b/c I have about reached the boiling point/murderous. It is infuriating, and when we win our suit, I will be able to go again. These are the worst fuckers I think I have ever seen in office.
everything appears to have been corrupted, grabbed, and twisted and manipulated. even the forking school boards. from the top down, our system is fucked up bad.
It’s a collaborative work in progress, and I’m hoping nobody gets ‘gun shy’…! But, We sure could use some legal eagles that know about Munis and leveraging…!
write up a diary and crowd source it
That’s exactly why I Occupy, Suz…! Ironically, one of Occupy’s biggest problems is merely determining where to even start and/or what to focus on…! 8-(
tis a daunting prospect… where to start indeed… so many things that need fixing and need fixing now.
tis about time for me to head out peeps. token’s sitting patiently by the door giving me watery puppy dog eyes.
thanks for hanging out with me tonight and i hope to see ya tomorrow for muppets
g’nite all
…so many things that need fixing and need fixing now…
Eggs-actly…! Sweet dreams, Suz…! *g*
My (un)Occupy friends don’t want to do anything much related to elected officials now, so I am supporting the lawsuit w/other people. I am “bi” when it comes to tactics.
night Suzzz – be well
Sorry I didn’t log in last night, eCAHN, so I could answer your question. I lived in Oklahoma City back in the day, and the Lincoln Park Zoo was seeking to buy a hippopotamus for the zoo . . . hence the Gayla Peavey song was created and used as early PR to seek donations to make that happen. Years later, when hubby and I discussed Christmas silliness, songs and such, I dredged up this old song. Of course, he had never heard it, and without “the rest of the story” he (like you) said it made no sense.
hey otchmoson — thanks for that tidbit!
