BUMP
IT’S EVERYWHERE! OMG! The 12-12-12 Concert for Hurricane Sandy Relief, benefiting the Robin Hood Fund, the largest independent poverty fighting organization in the New York area, is being broadcast and streamed on almost every major website and TV channel in the US, and is accessible to over 2 billion worldwide. Heck it’s even on the Cooking Channel! And the Military History Channel. Maybe Israelis and Palestinians will bond over Billy Joel and Kanye West, and we’ll have world peace as well as raising fund to help Hurricane Sandy relief efforts!
And we’re here liveblogging it with you, from the opening (rumored to be Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band) to the close (PaulMcCartney takes on Kurt Cobain’s role in Nirvana. Please no one introduce him to Courtney Love!).
In between, there’s Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, The Rolling Stones, Band, Eddie Vedder, The Who, and Roger Waters. Four hours of music and global mind meld. I think we are ordering either Thai food or pizza delivered, and we’ll have sparkling water, soda, champagne, and absinthe on hand.
Okay, let’s get ready to watch and talk!

About Firedoglake
Here we go–I’m on the Cooking Channel
Bruce!
I’m watching here
want butter on your popcorn?
and it’s Bruce!
You can find a channel or website to watch here and join in the global-a-thon!
wow, it looks like Bruce has spent some time in the Paris Hilton tanning booth.
and here
People were scalping tickets for a lot of $$$, the bastards:
There’ll be no snow in Africa this Christmas. . . or in NYC either because it’s just too goddamn warm.
Ticketmaster however donated their fees back to Robin Hood Foundation.
put on your wreckin’ ball
Is everything back in order where you live?
Pretty great intro to “My City of Ruins”
With These Hands!
demiest, *waving*
Thanks Lisa,
Okay Jon Bon Jovi looks great, TURN UP HIS MIC!
That was righteous
I know this Springsteen song.
My neighborhood, except for a couple of buildings, is basically back to normal–but there are parts of this city that are still in truly terrible shape, and I don’t get the sense most outside the area–or even many right here–have any idea how poor the official disaster response has been for so many. . . especially for those who had so little margin to start with.
Love the horn section always!
He might be your friend, Bruce, but that doesn’t mean you should invite Bon Jovi to help you ruin one of your signature songs.
Born to Run really does not benefit from the addition of a Bon Jovi.
How much do I have to donate to get JBJ off the stage?
Bruce is like morphing into Robert DeNiro
That was fail. Bon Jovi’s voice was too weak. He should stick to “Bad Medicine” or whatever it is he sang. Or acting. Yeah. Acting.
What was with the Paris Hilton tan and ROUGE?! Boss going metrosexual?
Thanks for the donation. He’s gone now.
since the world is dominated by Big Oil and corporations, we can look forward to a lot more of these awesome benefit concerts in the future!
Thanks Lisa! I can’t wait to see Roger Waters, and the Stones…
Chris Christie- the best place to hoard Twinkies, LOL!
Why is Hawaii’s cable feed being tape-delayed…! 8-(
It’s brought to us by Chase. I am glad it is benefiting Robin Hood Relief Fund which is directly in area.
CTuttle, you can get it streaming though online…
My streaming is tape-delayed too.
really, it’s brought to us by carbon dioxide…among other accumulating gases
John Sykes was my boss at Chrysalis Records.
SUSAN SARANDON IS SO BEAUTIFUL. I hope in 10 years I look as good as she does now.
Roger Waters!
Sweeet!
UNFAIR!
My ISP is way too slow, but, I did find one channel(out of 76 ‘basic’ channels)… Discovery’s ‘Fit and Health’ channel…! ;-)
You can watch right here CT
AMC should have it too..So many channels are participating…I wonder if Chase and other sponsors bought out the commercial advertsing time and/or if most are owned by the same mega-corps and are writing off ad revenue
That drum part was sucky, but now he’s getting warmed up!
Now a Pink Floyd song?
We don’t need no thought control…
Roger Waters is dope!
What a great performance by Roger…! That was an Apache Helicopter he’d featured in profile…! ;-)
AMC, the Cooking Channel, etc. are tape delaying, tho…! ;-)
Ditto, this is really good!
“Fear builds walls”
You could write a PhD dissertation on that album, for real.
Huge walls, Kevin…! 8-(
Money!
get away
I’d like to play as good as Roger Waters, dude is 69.
Money, it’s a crime
Share it fairly
But don’t take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil
Today
You ain’t lyin. Me too. (69? Dang, he’s good)
Looking forward to the Stones set…I wonder if Mick Taylor will join in tonight, too?
Somebody tell Twitter that isn’t Eddie Vedder singing “Money.”
I totally admire all his efforts to level the I/P’s ‘green line’ Walls…!
Anyone have a bud? Something about Dark Side of the Moon…
This is much better than I expected. Nothing to be snarky about.
Elliott !
I’m so proud of Toronto, people have been enthusiastically fundraising for Sandy relief, going down to volunteer, prepare meals, etc.
Mental Floss @mental_floss
Pink Floyd’s name comes from American blues musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

It has been used in English classes as essay material: http://profpoff.blogspot.com/2008/02/englsih-112-essay-1-on-wall.html
and a Master’s Thesis
Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman, had joined Mick, Keith, and Charlie on stage at their kickoff concert in London for their 50 and counting tour…! ;-)
Or The Wizard of Oz running on a different screen
I know (except for Bon Jovi) I am pretty thrilled by it.
Eddie Vedder now Comfortably Numb. Beautiful!
Yes, it was great to see photos of Mick T. and Bill onstage with the Stones again, especially the latter! I was lucky enough to see Bill on his last tour with the band in 1989.
whoa, what just happened, was there a glictch?
‘Ere, M’dear… *kaff* *koff* I won’t bogart…! ;-)
like somehitng blew and the sound is all weird …
Not surprised.
Fucking fantastic!
I miss David Gilmour.
x2
Yes, this is Eddie. Adding Eddie Vedder to a song is always a plus in my opinion. Wish he had sung a song with the E Street Band instead of Bon Jovi.
who was it?
C’mon Sandler, it is still Hanukkah now…! ;-)
Petro! That’s wonderful!
Sandy Screw ya
If I wasn’t supposed to be working.
Ah hell, it does help my ADD.
Adam Sandler doing Leonard Cohen….oh this is [adjective] But it does point out how “Halleluja” gets really over-used (sadly)
Sandler brings it … LOL !
Mark Ebner just walked through the living room and said “Sandler, he’s from Boston”
“The Congressman who tweeted his dick…”
Mountain Dewyew
I don’t think we’ll see him and Waters sharing another stage anytime soon, alas. Which is a pity, because Pink Floyd without Roger Waters just sucks.
It was pretty insanely great.
There’s a whole book out on this song–and I’m really glad it came out before it had to mention this version.
And. . . it looks like they will have to spend all they have raised tonight to pay the FCC fine. Class act, Sandler.
With Paul Schaffer on piano!
Is Ben Stiller unwell?
“You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a celebrity.”
Some channels did censor it
You can say anything on Showtime.
Much better then I was expecting.
Streaming kept crapping out when Springsten was on though.
It wasn’t censored on Cooking Channel!
I think he works hard at staying thin…
A great guitar solo in this song!
Bless his heart, he was a bit overpowered by Springsteen, but he sounds really good here. (Bon Jovi)
Some of us with more or less success.
OK, I like the 6/12 double neck tiger maple quitar.
Sounded like audio trouble earlier …seems to be fixed
Speaking of the FCC, et al, I wonder how YouTube is going to handle the surge of uploads…? ;-)
Bon JOvi is wearing a TURTLE NECK. That is so not rock n roll
I can see that now.
Bruce, you can’t sing harmony. Just sayin’.
Everyone’s neck gets OLD.
First rock concert I’ve ever seen with Twitter feed in the background.
Okay, that’s a bit better, Bruce and Jon.
*heh* Welcome to the 21st century…! ;-)
well, it’s free on youtube already, so no need to up vignettes….?
I wonder if the NY Gov’s girlsfriend Sandra “semi-homemade” Lee will make an appearance…?
That would be nice, Lisa, but, so many fools will still upload those very same ‘vignettes’…! 8-(
JS
…’Even take away our Super-sized Sodas’…
Jon still Rulz…! ;-)
My parents also rented a house at the shore every summer for a week. We only lived an hour away.
Clapton…!
That’s what I’m talkin about….Eric!
the one and only
I predict Layla… or Cocaine.
Well, prolly won’t be Let it Rain
What a drummer!
Hot damn, He’s aged like fine wine…! *g*
please god, not to be first lady
I LOVE THIS SONG–it’s a hoodoo/voodoo incantation via the blues (and there’s a lot of African Diasporic Religion encoded in the blues)
Only thing missing is Jeff Beck.
This is soooo awesome! He is freaking incredible!
x2
Sweeet!
my youtube got skippy
moved to ION on my TV
Is this making anyone else feel old? I’ve seen most of these guys in concert at least once, if not multiple times, and Bruce, hell, lost track but since the Jersey shore is in my DNA, that’s probably normal.
Wow, it’s a super fast show.
CHelsea? Did we miss her getting intro’d, or are we supposed to know immediately that it’s her.
Chelsea looks more and more like Hillary
I wanna hear The Core…
BRING IT!!!
The Better Half and I are already planning to watch our ‘encore’ performance, I’d missed the intro, and she’d missed the Bon Jovi and Clapton entrees…! She’s a big Bon Jovi nut(horrors)…! ;-)
There was just a brief mention, I think.
Has there been one shout-out, at all, to #Occupy Sandy’s heroic efforts…?
So was the Coney Island amusement area destroyed?
The Stones!!
As opposed to more like her dad? :)
Stones, now I’m feeling my age.
Not yet. Nor to the Waves for Water Hot lunch truck which makes possible for 500 + people everyday to eat a hot, nutritious meal in Rockaway (but I’ll be writing about them tomorrow!
Now this is a little scary. LOLOL
lol
olde english musicians
Sounds like her, too. Which is interesting because she grew up sounding like her dad, with a slight Arkansas drawl. Was she told to lose the accent when she decided to get into TV work?
Good!
The Better Half had quipped that she hopes they’re all sober tonite, as soon as they’d been introduced…! We’d been burned by a Keith Richards staggering into the amps and speaker towers, on their Bridges to Babylon tour, at Aloha Stadium…!
I’mshure
I was born in a cross-fire hurricane
And I howled at my ma in the driving rain,
But it’s all right now, in fact, it’s a gas!
But it’s all right. Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!
I was raised by a toothless, bearded hag,
I was schooled with a strap right across my back,
But it’s all right now, in fact, it’s a gas!
But it’s all right, Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!
I was drowned, I was washed up and left for dead.
I fell down to my feet and I saw they bled.
I frowned at the crumbs of a crust of bread.
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I was crowned with a spike right thru my head.
But it’s all right now, in fact, it’s a gas!
But it’s all right, Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!
Jumping jack flash, it’s a gas
Jumping jack flash, it’s a gas
Jumping jack flash, it’s a gas
Jumping jack flash, it’s a gas
Jumping jack flash
They are BRINGIN’ IT111
Was Ronnie Wood on lead guitar?
Steven…!
I wish there had been more Stones….
Senator Colbert!
I was hoping for an encore
Today on the radio they were already advertising the CD with selected performances. Ahh the digital age…straight form soundboard to disc. And probably pre-performance clearances already done.
*wow* Steven is telling it like it is…!
We were playing Stones covers in HS at the dances, 1968-69. never saw them live.

I did once but YEARS ago
good seats tho :)
just babes!
You were expecting maybe Brian Jones?
Me too – but the PPV special is in a couple of days.
I saw them in Boulder Stadium for Sticky Fingers, Foxboro for Steel Wheels, and the Bridges concert, which spans three of their five decades…! ;-)
Brian Sonenstein @bsonenstein
If only New Orleans had more hedge funds

twolf found the vid for Sandy Screw You
http://www.dependablerenegade.com/dependable_renegade/2012/12/sandy-screw-ya.html
Actually, Keith Richards.
Put your cellphones in the air. OH SWEET XENU.. (oh Samsung which makes cellphones is a sponsor). Lovely voice, but “put your cellphones in the air”? Ugh.
Though it would be fun to see the expressions on Mick’s, Keith’s, and Charlie’s faces should Brian come back from the dead to plug in.
Never saw them live in the 60s, 70s or 80s (but played those albums – Beggars Banquet through IORR until they wore out).
I did see them in ’94, ’97 (no, Keith did not crash into the amps), ’99, ’02 (twice), ’05 and ’06
Ha, ha!
Buscemi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqIGiVLOY4E
would it kill you to say something
I lost some audio….
The Who!!
Actor/director and FDL Movie Night guest Steve Moramarco asked “At this point shouldn’t they be called THE TWO ?
talking ’bout my generation
Ugh X2,
See Me…
Feel Me…
Pete Townsend is 67!
Quadrophenia!
Nice touch, having Keith footage for “Bell Boy”.
McCartney is 70….
And this was inevitable — the song that was a hit by Elton as well as the ‘Oo.
I am so passed this music… It was enough 20 or 30 yrs ago… It all sounds like noise these days to my old ears. I suppose it’s what musicians can do to help victims. Can’t fault them for that.
*heh* Ain’t no spring chickens amongst the bunch…! ;-)
Yes, and he still sings like a bird…hope to see him in a bit.
The audio went out again…
I love The WHo, but would have preferred more Stones…
Not here…!
I wore earplugs and will be the only one at the senior center yelling at ‘em to turn down the TV.
*heh* More Clapton…! ;-)
Exactly. The ‘Oo kick ass, even though it’s just Rog and Pete now. (Though I do like Charlie Watts.)
Bill Wyman’s 76
hahahaha… it’s noise… but it makes people happy…
Roger can still blow a mean mouth harp…! ;-)
YES!
Where does one get a break-away shirt these days?
Wow, The Who are um…on for a long time by comparison to all the other acts…
Why are The Who playing so much longer than everybody else? This is turning into a Who concert.
anyway!
“In between, there’s…”
Yes, this is a great line-up, but it would have been better to stage this concert over 2 days (Saturday and Sunday) to fit in more A List performers such as Led Zeppelin, U2, REM, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Jeff Beck, The Police, The Pretenders, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Leonard Cohen, The Allman Brothers Band, Steely Dan, Chicago, Simon and Garfunkel, Yes, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Jethro Tull, James Taylor, Tom Petty, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, and The Beach Boys.
Cut to the phones, I wanted to see B Williams with the guy who was trying to donate $1M before cutting out of that segment.
That was Whoopi, making some serious whoopie too…! ;-)
Did everyone catch Pete dropping the F-bomb?
In a dream world, but evenif all those acts were available/willing, the cost of staging that would be prohibitive, even with sponsors. This current concert looks to have one back line and a fairly easy set up. Your dream concert would require at least two dressing rooms per act (if not more–some acts need one room for each performer), and that’s just the least of it–hotels rooms for bands and crews, more production and security staff, a bigger venue. Benefit concerts cost money–the acts have to pay their tech crew, and their expenses have ot be covered (not everyone can afford to write off their costs, despite looking like on paper they have a bunch of dough). Even Live Aid and Live Aid 2 were one day events.
Is there any web site where can I find a set list for this concert?
RIP Ravi Shankar
Pete Townshend? Maybe that’s why I ost audio on the Cooking Channel…And Kanye leaves me cold.
And Kanye! Damn, he’s arrogant, but he’s earned the right, he has. So where’s Kim?
The seven-second delay doesn’t seem to be working well for many TV viewers.
She seemed to be trying to introduce the dude standing next to her, to Brian.
*heh* That’s the main delay feed…? ;-)
I’ve noticed a bunch of words sliced and diced…!
How does this concert stack up to other benefit concerts you’ve seen?
But, I heard her say it was for real, nq…! ;-)
Much Twittering over Kanye’s leather kilt. Deal with it, Twitterites — Kanye could make pink lingerie look badass.
Live Aid was amazing! The 9/11 telethon was not as compelling –possibly because 9/11 was just so damn horrifying. I wish Katrina been had been this as organized and seamless and star studded (as tweeted by Brian Sonenstein @bsonenstein
)
Hopefully she’s writing a BIG ASSED check to Robin Hood Fund!
Me too.
On Twitter:
Firedoglake favorite director/artist/activist John Roecker:
…They are so groovy!…
*heh* Maybe they’re from the wrong Coast, Lisa…? ;-)
Wow, Kayne is sure getting a LOT of time. But I guess he’s super popular!
(BTW, all the lighting for the concert was donated, thanks to Elliot Krowe of Blackbird Theatrical Services)
Good discussion from WNYC radio this morning
The Economics of the 12/12/12 Sandy Benefit Concert
http://www.wnyc.org/shows/bl/2012/dec/12/economics-121212-sandy-benefit-concert
Enough with “swinging a dead cat,” Brian Williams. You’re upsetting Mr. Bruce Think of all the pets that died are were displaced by Hurricane Sandy.
Drunk Uncle? Why?
That was pathetic…! 8-(
Yeah, that was AWFUL. There are way better comic bits that could have been done.
Billy…!
I want to hear Glass Houses…! ;-)
I’m pretty sure we won’t hear “The Downeaster Alexa”.
*heh* I may be crazy…! ;-)
I’m certainly banging my head…!
I hope he plays “We Didn’t Start the Fire”
Ooh that sux, that’s it from, Billy…? 8-(
Oh Chris Martin is the guy married to Gwynneth Paltrow, and he needed to explain what band he’s in. But Michael Stipe is awesome.I hope he does “What’s the Frequency Kenneth?” and/or “End of the World (as we know it)”
God, I wish I was there.
“The Great Beyond” would be nice as well, but I dunno if he could pull it off without a band.
Okay that was a really snotty and graceless comment form Chris Martin, commenting on the ages of the performers, saying her was the youngest and just to just donate “the average of the performers and we’ll raise billions.” ASSHOLE. And boring.
That was still a killah Bad Religion…! ;-)
So this is being shown in like 100 countries–does each country have its own phone bank with their own celebrities? And/or are celebrities from each country answering phones? I am curious about these logistics…
Dayam, the censors are mighty trigger-happy with the cut-off button…! 8-(
WOW, Macca–granted they have the hubble camera on him, but his voice sounds great.
Helter-Skelter, how apropo…! ;-)
I’m watching on Youtube and haven’t had any problems, except a couple buffering issues, but no delays. It’s been pretty flawless.
“Live and Let Die” would be awesome. Again, he like Bruce is suffering from fake tan. I like my musicians wiht a studio tan, like non-fat milk blue-ish white.
Anyone have any ideas on what they will all do for an encore?
Taking bets at window 3.
Firedoglake fave and newsvandal JPSottile:
And another form JP:
I love “Live and Let Die” That was awesome!
Okay my final thoughts: Not enough women performers, though they made sure plenty were in place to speak (Kristen Wilson, CHelsea, Blake Lively who I thought was a healthy Gwynneth Paltrow)
Also, GE was a sponsor, and many of the cable channels are in the NBC/GE family.
Thank you all for being part of FDL’s live blog and joining in the global experience!
