Dean Martin — Christmas Blues.
What’s on your mind?
g’evening pups — how’s everyone doing tonight?
Aloha, Suz and lln pups…! I just noted that I’ve got both Xmas eve, and, New Year’s eve…! Must appropriate, apropriate toobz now…! ;-)
All good in the ‘nard, Suzanne. Enjoyed some sunny weather and a slow saunter towards Christmas. Nice, really.
Shit, we need some cocktails for the holiday nights too, CT.
Hey, CT. Were you up on the mountain today? How’s the sky?
aloha tut — how’s paradise tonight? *head hanging in shame* ohmystars, i had not even noticed who has what for the holidays… that means its christmas day and new years day for me.
evening, Suzzzz — firegourds
hey dearie — sounds wonderful! you gonna do a repeat tomorrow?
hey bg — how’s nm tonight? gonna need some food to go with those cocktails too…
hey ppd — how was your day?
FRUITCAKE! Plus also, I promise some tamales, the best, goat cheese and mint with fresh salsa.
Indeed I am! Got a computer geek to fix my dad’s computer glitch…. referral from my son-in-law. Gonna plan a dinner out at one of Santa Barbara’s finest restaurants for a late birthday gift and early Christmas celebration for my dad with my brother. Just going to enjoy …. love this early winter California weather. So nice.
I’ll send you a hunk for sure.
wonderful! and wonderful! soft winter days at the coast are worthy of celebrating (as is your dad)
I love fruitcake! So many people say they don’t, but everyone in my family (bunch of Germans and Danes) loves fruitcake. I also love mince pie. Don’t know if I will be able to find that anywhere this year….. will maybe have to make my own.
i’ll have to bring bacon jam to spread on toast points or crackers for those that wanna just nibble
*heh* You’ve got a tough sleigh ride too, Suz…! Interestingly, the Better Half’s Bday, just happens to fall on Hanukkah, and, a Sunday, this year…! How lucky for me, eh…? ;-)
new years eve everyone is all happy and partying… new years day night folks are grumpy and hung over or upset about the football games (or upset that there *are* football games)….
Hi folks. I’ve been getting to late late night too late lately. Everyone is going to bed!
I have 9 nieces and nephews and I usually give them itunes gift cards, this year I decided to make them solar powered battery chargers so they can charge up there mobile devices. I’m putting them in Altoids kits. I ordered them today and hopefully I’ll get them completed by Christmas.
Definitely hungover from a three-day weekend, Suz…! ;-)
hey spocko — how ya been? that’s a wonderful idea! how hard are they to make?
Dearie, happy to share the fruitcake with you too! My mother made fruitcake when I was a little kid, and I Loved It. I never forgot the taste of it and can’t abide that terrible stuff you get in the tins, so I started making it myself a few years ago. I think I found the recipe she maybe used, but I don’t know where I put it, so I have been cruising the fruit cake recipes on line to find one I like. The one I use has candied ginger in it, and that pretty much sold me on the recipe.
Christmas time is kind of bah humbug for me this year. I don’t feel like “stimulating the economy” until someone pays me for my work. Once again someone loves my ideas and work, but doesn’t have a budget.
And, when I do it for free and see how great it is, why should they pay? Can’t blame them.
That is awesome! I saw kids in NYC helping people charge up their phones using stuff like that, and also some kind of little fires in pots, not sure what that was, but it seemed to do the trick after Sandy. People were desperate, we need to be prepared.
i’ve had years when i’ve had both the eves and both the days… its luck of the draw :) gotta admit, the first thing i noticed was that i had christmas eve off :) when i was at the pd, i used to use my seniority when signing up for shifts to make sure i had certain holidays and my birthday as normal days off. having signups only once a year for a one year shift made it easier
I like doing stuff with people, that is the holidays for me. I totally don’t like the commercial aspect and do everything possible not to get into that. My family is pretty good about not buying a lot of shit.
pretty good, thanks — you doing well, I hope
Not hard at all, I’m handy with a soldering iron and a glue gun. It’s nice to make stuff by hand. Solar Kits | Brown Dog Gadgets http://shar.es/6kK4v
I hope they like them. They actually take a long time for the batteries to recharge by the sun, but of course it’s free. I also am getting each family a recharger. So if you can’t use solar you can at least charge them up and reuse them.
My family used to get gifted with fruitcakes from Corsicana, TX…. Collins St. Bakery…..when we lived in Texas. Love those! I’ve thought of ordering one just for memory’s sake.
The other day I dropped a little battery operated gadget on the floor, and it flew apart into every small piece. I managed to figure out how to put it back together, nothing broke, and it works just fine. I felt like a genius, but of course the Chinese whip these things out every five seconds.
hanging in and hanging on :) had sunshine today but our temps are dropping… high was 47 today (which is lower than my low yesterday) and its already down to 39 outside… dry tho :) only had one shower come through this afternoon and it was a short one
*heh* In my twenty years, I’ve did CQ duty, and, even doled it out for many an poor fool, over the years…!
Btw, holiday duty, commanded top-dollar hourly rates, too…! ;-)
I think the Eastern Star ladies sell those, and LM used to Love them. I don’t like those too much. They are not cheap to make though, all that fruit and brandy and such. plus also 6 eggs.
i always burn myself when i get near a glue gun. did the same with those burn the wood to make the design thingies… lard knows what kinda damage i would do to myself with a soldering iron…
I told my kids that I don’t want anything that I have to dust or water! If I can’t eat it, I don’t want it.
My daughter posted on FB: One boy got hot and bothered when his twin brother grabbed something out of his hands; “You give that back…you, you, you …. Old Lady!” My daughter asked, “what did you say????” Boy said, “I said he’s an Old Lady!” We are all still laughing. I said, “I promise I won’t ask him to share anymore…..for a while.” The boys are 4…. and frustration does not always lead to articulateness…. or sensibleness.
the way the shifts were arranged, there were holiday slots in each of them.. seniority helped me be able to pick getting holiday pay for working the day after thanksgiving and 8 hours straight pay for holiday on my normal day off for christmas day
I don’t need anything, that’s for sure. I did just get a new computer, that should be all the new I need for another few years.
I’m with you. Just, please, folks…. no gifts that need to be dusted!
BTW, my latest self assigned project?
Remember that guy who was going to shoot everyone at the Twilight movie?
I’m following up on it to find out why he could legally get two semi-automatic weapons with involuntary 96 hour hold on him for violent threats to another. He should have been in the National Instant Check Backgrouns System.
But he wasn’t. It turns out that Missouri law doesn’t mandate someone with his background be put in the database.
So I’m calling the lawmakers from his county and saying, ‘Your constituents just dodged 400 bullets, are you going to fix the law so that someone else with his background can’t get a gun legally?” If not, why not? Are you waiting for an Aurora to happen? This is the perfect time to act, because you KNOW that if he did shoot people everyone would wonder why. Why not get ahead of the curve.
Then we will see all the reasons it doesn’t happen.
a marshmellow world
*heh* It was a different system in the Army, Senority, only goes so far…! Remember, some Field grades also need to be on duty, 24/7, to handle all those local lockups….! ;-)
wow…. i wish you success spocko… if not now, when?
the advantage of being in a para-military organization…. seniority counts for a lot!
Sorry, isn’t it? I wish you much good luck on getting anyone to give a good gol-darned, as they say.
let it snow
little ole wine drinker me
…a para-military organization…. seniority counts for a lot!
*heh* Did you ever have to deal with any drunken Sailors/Soldiers/Marines…? ;-)
not that i can recall…. i do recall the jail occasionally having one or two waiting on the mp’s to show up but our jail booked for several agencies.
dean and foster
My nephew committed suicide… Sorry I skipped all comments.

oh loohoo.. i’m so sorry (((loohoo)))
LooHoo…. contact me at xxx @ xxx …. I’ve been there. I’m going to delete my email in a couple of moments, but I am reaching out to you now.

Anything overseas, required an O-6, but, stateside, an 0-5, could handle it…! It was generally considered a career-killer, if you hit the Post’s blotter, but, times have changed…! 8-(
Dearie, not sure how. Tried…
Thanks Suz, so sad.
Oh noes, Loo Hoo…! My sincere condolences…! *g*
we didn’t get many. alameda navy base closed down and the bay area was primarily a navy town. port chicago naval weapons station was clear out in coco county… iirc the occasional would be a chp arrest for dui that was booked into our jail.
Loo Hoo, sincere condolences, that is so very sad, tough on your family. (((hugs)))
LooHoo…. email me if you want to share thoughts. I went through this in the most overwhelming way… right after 9/11. I will never get over it, of course, but I’ve ‘matured’ through the pain. I’m going to delete my email address now, but I will share grief and understanding with you if you wish.
loohoo i’ll make sure dearie has your email addy if ok with you
thanks, CT. Don’t know how to see if Dearie saw my response…
i already did it for you dearie
yes. It changed since i moved to ps. do you have it?
thanks. going to san diego tomorrow to help my brother
not sure…. is it roadrunner?
Thanks, Sweet Suz. I checked my aol but nothing from LooHoo. And I know how suicide can just take ones breath away. I’ve never talked about my own loss, but I’m certainly available to share with LooHoo. Please help make sure she has my email. My heart aches for anyone who has to deal with this.
It has been 10 years since my nephew died at 18, my sister never recovered. Best to your brother, it hurts so bad.
*edited by suz*
what’s your @… is it aol or roadrunner or gmail or what?
He was only 26. Walked in front of a train, people.
oh loohoo how horrible…
sending intro email now
I have a friend, her daughter did that at about 19, I think. Just awful, so so so very sad, Loo Hoo. Truly. Take care of yourself, be good to each other, nothing more terrible.
LooHoo, one of the kindest things anyone said to me was from a brother-in-law whom I really didn’t know all that well. He whispered, “Forgive him.” He said it so gently that I knew that he understood that the pain we were all feeling was kind of universal. It was just such an unexpected and gentle kindness…. totally nonjudgmental….just a wish that we’d all get through the excruciating pain and somehow be okay.
That is so sad, Loo Hoo…! 8-(
loohoo — dearie — i sent the email from my suzanne at firedoglake dot com addy.. if you didn’t get it.. email me at that addy and i’m try again
That forgiveness is hard, it is necessary.
Checked my aol again….no note. LooHoo, Suzanne will share my email address with you if you want to connect later. This is something that will percolate in the family for months. Contact me at any time, if you wish.
And much love to you and your family as you wend your way through the loss.
did you get the email i sent you?
I don’t need anyone to forgive anyone else. Just totally blown away. Just need to go to san diego tomo to feed my family. Food is healing.
I’ll check email, Suz. Thanks so much.
It didn’t come through, Suz. Just said “email share” or something like that.
I’m going to give LooHoo the choice to grab a hand or not. You may give her my email…. the aol one. I don’t check the juno one much.
This will be a very hard and sad time.
I send love and empathy and understanding.
her email is in the to section.. if you hit reply all it should show up
No email yet from you or dearie.
