And we peons are not going to be allowed to peak behind the curtain to discover how the world banking system helped take down the global economy.
The EU’s general court has blocked an attempt to force the European Central Bank to release files showing how Greece used derivatives to hide its debt in the run-up to the financial crisis. The case was brought by Bloomberg News under the EU’s freedom of information rules in August 2010 but was thrown out on Thursday by the court in Luxembourg.
…
The ruling means European taxpayers who are footing the bill for the €240bn Greek bailout will not find out whether EU officials knew of irregularities in Greece’s national accounts before they became public in 2009.
If we’re allowed to know what they did, we may not throw money at them the next time.

About Firedoglake
Thanks, attaturk, those toxic assets begin to remind me of the contents of Pandora’s box, buzzing to be let loose on us all.
Sounds like the same impeccable legal reasoning of the majority opinion in Bush v. Gore: “It is because we say it is”.
Today’s Marion’s last day at work. If you’re crafting your morning post, hearty congratulations.
Thanks for the reminder. Now when she’s retired, we’ll expect more, right?
I’m going to miss Marion’s posts in the morning. While I’m reasonably sure she’ll still post, there’s no reason for me to expect her to keep getting up so early to do it. Congrats though Marion!
Austerity and opacity brought to you by the very pillagers who authored the pain and their lackey courts.
Good morning, pups. Today we’ve got Brooks, Cohen, Blow and Krugman. In “Let’s Talk About X” Bobo gurgles that it’s time to break out of the 1986 paradigm of closing loopholes and lowering tax rates. He thinks he has a case for the consumption tax. Right, Bobo. A HUGELY regressive tax is just what this country needs. Cripes… Mr. Cohen, in “Keeping Egypt’s Republic,” says Morsi must correct course and liberals must seek compromise. In “The Gun Frenzy” Mr. Blow says nothing warms the heart for the holidays like cold steel. Prof. Krugman addresses the “Class Wars of 2012.” He says the same people who bet big on Mitt Romney, and lost, are now trying to win by stealth the ground they failed to gain in the election.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got waffles with warm maple syrup today. IT’S HERE! “R” day has arrived! Yesterday’s lunch was really nice — I was really touched that in addition to the “office gift” that everyone had chipped in for (nice gift card to Barnes & Noble) I was showered with several other gifts from folks who got together in groups of 3 or 4. I was hugely surprised, and very touched.
Thanks, StonyPillow! And yes, Ruth, I’ll still be here every morning. Even if I can turn off the alarm clock I can’t turn off hungry kittens!
Have a great day, everyone. I know I will!
All those years of starting work at 7:30 have turned me into an early riser, so I’ll be here! Starting the day with Attaturk and the morning bunch isn’t anything that I’m planning on giving up.
Thanks, Marion, enjoy that final day, we will be happy to make it worth your while to get up. I’ve always been an early riser, just my nature makes me want to get up and doing.
Yep, Bobo thinks the workers can be milked some more. We all have t.v.’s don’t we?
That’s encouraging Marion but I certainly don’t have any right to expect it. :)
Krauthammer thinks the “fiscal cliff” terms offered by Obama are like the terms Grant offered to Lee at Appomatox court house. Though I’m sure he didn’t mean it that way, the terms Grant offered Lee were incredibly, historically generous and, in fact they made Grant a lot of enemies in DC.
Just one more thing Cabbagemallet has gotten wrong…
Am fallng back to sleep. Talk to you all later.
Krugman this morning could be talking about Bobo this morning…
Nighty-night Ruth.
“Cabbagemallet”? ROTFLMAO!
Gotta go to work and resist the temptation to call my boss “Cabbagemallet”. As his name isn’t Krauthammer, it wouldn’t be appropriate anyway. Laters!
I’ve often wondered if Krugman gets a sneak peek at Bobo’s babbling…
GOOD!
I’d miss you. Who needs an alarm clock when you have hungry cats?
Boxturtle (I learned long ago not to feed in the morning. They eat when I get home)
Cabbagemallet took me a second to parse. Excellent! I’d mail it to their general email address and see how long it is before someone slips and uses it on the air.
Boxturtle (Evil, in moderation, can be fun)
Congrats to you on this happy day. Hope it is wonderful for you.
“Cabbagemallet”. Now, that is absolutely superb, Marion.
As the Brits might say, “Simply smashing!!!”.
Certainly one for the current “history” books.
Always appreciate your, “Here they are” … gleanings, btw.
DW
All the best on your upcoming retirement.
Cabbagemallet I understand, is actually Gallagher’s second cousin once removed.
Well, as Yves Smith has stated, the French and German banks are insolvent:
http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2012/11/the-greek-resistance.html
so I’m sure this is not the only curtain the public is not allowed to peek behind…
Shorter EU General Court: Just pay the bill, you proles, and no, you don’t get an itemized invoice.
Keeping the world safe for reckless banksters.
There is no snooze button on a hungry cat.
Congratulations on a job finely & finally done!
Best wishes for a long, happy and healthy “your time.”
