In the wake of three more American states voting for legalized same-sex marriage bringing the number of States in this country that do so to nine plus the District of Columbia, the Roman Catholic Church is not only standing fast, but becoming bigger jerks in opposing it:
In a front-page article in Saturday’s Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, the Holy See sought to frame itself as the lone voice of courage in opposing initiatives to give same-sex couples legal recognition. In a separate Vatican Radio editorial, the pope’s spokesman asked sarcastically why gay marriage proponents don’t now push for legal recognition for polygamous couples as well.
That’s right, they are not only opposing it, they are endorsing the Rick Santorum position of false equivalencies.
I guess you’d expect that from folks who are clearly experienced in marriage.

They have slammed the terrarium door shut on box turtles, right?
I wonder if these morons appreciate the irony of the Church dissing gay marriage by equating it with polygamy when the Bible, that is considered so sancrosanct is filled with stories of polygamy and God speaking mano y mano with polygamists with nary a peep of it being wrong for quite a while.
It kinda spoils their white authoritarian male byline that God even cares how anyone defines marriage.
Seven hundred wives
Three hundred one concubines
Never box turtles.
Soooo….The Pope is going to work himself up into a frothy mixture over this? Well, we know Nazis hated teh gay and we know that the Pope is/was a Nazi and a Catholic, (same thing really).
Good morning, pups. Today we have Krugman and Keller. Prof. Krugman, in “Hawks and Hypocrites,” says the deficit scolds have discredited themselves with arguments that are wrong and also dishonest. Yes, Paul, they have. But they’ll probably end up shredding the safety net anyway. Mr. Keller calls for “A New Manhattan Project” and says the misery of Hurricane Sandy has created a fleeting moment of political will, a chance to assure the survival of our greatest metropolis. The nation is supposed to rally together and save a great city. I don’t recall the same cri du coeur after Katrina. Oh, right… All those brown people don’t matter as much as all those bankers. Silly me.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. Time for me to get it in gear before I head off to work (13 more working days and then I’ll have to REALLY pay attention to when I’ll have to start buying cat food for us if the folks Prof. Krugman writes about have their way). Have a great day.
And like New Orleans, the brown people in NYC will no doubt be expected to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps” and stop being “welfare queens”. The banksters? Those are job creators®. Can’t have them be inconvenienced. The money and infrastructure will service the top tier. Almost exclusively.
Maybe THIS is the type of thing the Catholic Church should look at instead?
Pffft! The Vatican and their NOM allies will hail it as a step forward and a model for everyone else. And then in another five years or so, there will be more front page stories about meetings among clergy wondering why people are abandoning the church.
I’ll try real hard to feel sorry for the Vatican. Other people don’t believe as you do. Your solution is to make non-church members obey church rules?!?
Boxturtle (When I see the pope keeping Kosher out of respect for the Jews, I’ll listen)
Not this BoxTurtle! I can use lockpicks!
Boxturtle (And plastique, if needed)
Keller is correct. It is time for us to look at spending some money to protect our key coastal cities. N.O. showed us how GOPers deal with the problem. Perhaps progressives can show a better way.
Boxturtle (No reason to punish Manhattan because N.O was/is botched)
Musta been a Commie said that.
(BTW, nothing personal intended here. I have the utmost respect for box turtles, and their significant others.)
Yup. They’ll show how Uganda is leading the world in human rights.
I sometimes wonder if the Catholic chruch realizes how much their actions are hurting them in the eyes of most of the rest of the world. Or if they only watch Fox, and thus think almost everybody agrees wit them.
Boxturtle (I would certainly take advice on marriage from someone who is sworn never to marry)
Sure! Obeying church rules = freedom! And ponies….
Gotta go to work.
Cutting to the quick, thanks Margaret.
Mr BoxT, I feel the word progressive needs to be re-applied to a different group politically, and a new word needs to take its place to define those who are actually taking actions for change. Nothing appropriate has yet come to my mind.
Good Morning
Commie! It sounds like the sort of thing a Kenyan Marxist Fascist would say.
Boxturtle (I went to sleep and I woke up in a theocracy!)
I can kind of see the Catholics’ point. I mean, all they want to do is prevent people from diluting the sanctity of domestic abuse and high divorce rates. Er, marriage.
Thanks, attaturk, I follow the Vatican on rythym method of birth control, too, works so well that good Catholic families have lots of leftover kids for the church. Old men in dresses are making great decisions that have built up the number of folks attending their churches all over … their make believe world.
Well, my grandmother used to refer to such things as “Simply common sense”. Given that it’s mainly the 99% who are concerned about such things, perhaps we should be called “commoners”.
Boxturtle (Or is that taken?)
Thanks, Marion, Keller is funny, that urban renewal project to make NYC even less affordable is right down his highrise alley.
Would intelligent do it? It works for me, but enlightened is probably more to your purpose.
I’m just fine with librul.
BTW enjoy your actual Veterans Day, all sales and no mail, right? And remember the poor service damaged troops.
It has a certain ring, fewer letters and could easily be re-purposed.
I pulled the thread off topic I fear, my apologies.
Forty-two years ago I formally resigned from being a C Church member. I guess i was not that big of a contributor to the offerings collection to have had any effect on their continued survival. I also quit their version of praying for them too. Proof of the effect of prayer perchance?
Interesting, it looks like their prayers failed in our recent elections, we got the Kenya Muslim back.
Does that mean my prayers worked? I just wanted people to vote with their good listening ears.
:^) Praying for the two largest media buy candidates (and their backers) to just go away didn’t work either.
Back and forth here a little, sending the student off to school with a hot breakfast.
Depends on what they prayed for. Many times, they pray for the betterment of mankind and are shocked when God chooses a path for betterment different from what the church intended.
Boxturtle (So did they pray for Mitt or did they pray for the best result?)
Good Morning demi,
Prayers made with genuine sincerity likely have power. Sarcastic or hypocritical prayers likely not so much. You would be the former and not the later.
That and the chicken entrails.
It’s not exactly like making a list for Santa. I don’t ask for stuff or for specific things to happen. I pray for strength, for patience, for courage.
Good work, there, did I ever tell you one of my favorite breakfasts for the kids was muffins? Mix the ingredients the night before, or not.
Yes, I use the chicken entrails to divine the future.
The catholics here in flyover land prob’ly prayed for Sandy to hit those stuckup easterners. And are confused that divine intervention may have resulted in a bigger win for the antichrist.
Good daddy. You get an “A”.
OT,
free lunch for vets at Golden Corral. (take them off the public dollars earlier, sorry)
A few bits of left over fried kielbasa, onion, garlic, 1/2 cup or so of cooked millet, two tomatoes, a few chopped swiss chard leaves, beat 5 farm eggs with a bit of cream, poured in the eggs sprinkled on two kinds of shredded cheese, covered the cast iron pan and turned the heat to low, low. Timed for when she finishes her morning routine, 30-40 minutes. Oh, forgot to mention a good splash of Tabasco sauce when whisking the eggs.
Impressed, I am! That’s all healthy and energy productive, can I come over and play?
Snow on the ground, wear your insulated pak-boots.
Left overs and eggs, really pretty easy peasey. 4-5 minutes prep time. Cooks in its own steam.
I just realized, Ruth, that I missed making the most obvious comment on your cheese soup thread yesterday.
I little cheese to go with their Whine.
Hope it’s not too late to make that connection. I’m a little embarrased.
Did you realize, I got no trolls on cheese soup? wore their little selves out at PUAC, no doubt. And thanks, good line, have to use it sometime.
What I would like to see for veterans day is lots of veterans asking for funds going into care they need for injuries they got in wingnut wars, thanks, instead of wars.
That was nice. And, Peg didn’t get any on Pull [On] Your Cat either.
I think the scrolling and ignoring is prolly the most effective way of keeping the floors clean.
11/11/12 PUAC demi@100:
“To be perfectly honest, I was hoping that some of the commenters who have disagreed with each other would join this conversation.”
I took this as an invitation to “commenters” in general. Now I realize it was probably meant for regular PUAC commenters, who also share their views, including disagreements, with the rest of us on other threads. I apologize if I misunderstood. I sometimes leave comments at Attaturk’s, which has a political content, but never on the community chats where politics is explicitly unwelcome. Did not intend to troll.
I am seeing a lot of free meals for vets signs around. Or some percent off purchases. I don’t recall seeing those before now. Was I just oblivious?
EDIT: even the car wash place was offering 10% off to vets.
I read the thread, mostly after it was over because of my morning errands, and I didn’t think you were trolling at all. JMHO.
T’would be a sad day if we chased everyone who disagrees with a point of view away. If the comments are civil and well reasoned, I learn from them. I don’t want to live in a bubble, no matter which kind.
Dissent isn’t trolling, and I thought we always made it clear that us who are regular commenters aren’t rejecting any view just because it may not agree with ours, though we have a wide range of views. It’s the comments that just criticize opposing points of view, and make unpleasant comments, that are considered trolling.
Sounds wonderful, nonny. My kids would never have eaten it. Too many “odd” ingredients. But I would love some. *holds out plate*
Around here, there are always lots of offers, but as some of our vets are homeless they don’t get to the ones most in need.
For anyone still around, KrisA has a diary up. Go say hi!
Hey! Dinerzens! Over here!
Thanks!
Most have probably left…but I think it is sometimes hard to tell troll comments from ongoing snark/cynicism/too clever by half that gets really tiresome, imho. Hard to tell what’s what.
The states don’t tell The Church which marriages it may or must recognize. Why does The Church think it has the right to get involved in legislating which marriages the state may recognize?
If The Church is going to behave as a political advocacy organization, IMHO, it should be taxed as such.
People need to understand that polygamy is NOT “sister wives” and “big love”. UT, AZ, TX and other states “turn a blind eye” to true polygamy where children (girls as young as 12) are married off to much older men and then live off of welfare, food stamps and Medicaid (known as “bleeding the beast”)… as discussed in new book “plygs”, a fact based journalistic view at the REAL world of polygamy … Warren Jeffs, the leader of this group (serving a life sentence for child rape) has recently ordered that only 15 men in the group can procreate with ANY of the women of their choice within the group… it is a SAD, SICK way to live. this group in UT / AZ / TX are nothing but pedophiles and welfare cheats…
BUT the law makers in those states will not let an ADULT, TAX PAYING, gay couple marry …. go figure….
