George Osborne, the Chancellor under the Cameron Government in the UK has been a lightning rod ever since he helped usher in austerity measures in the UK — which has undeniably caused a double-dip recession.
One might think that would be the thing that would have cost him his job months ago.
But, as usual and as Atrios noted last week the thing that may very well end Osborne’s job is not his torpedoing of the British economy, but his being a hypocritical dick on a small scale.
George Osborne, who was last week forced to pay a £160 rail upgrade after sitting in first class with only a standard ticket, had already been caught making the same “error” five months ago, it has emerged.
If this does end up leading to his resignation (and it may not) Osborne can always take solace that years ago John Sununu resigned from the Bush I Administration for similar — but even more frequent — offenses.
Twenty years later he’s one of Romney’s most offensive and prominent liars.

About Firedoglake
Apart from any sense of entitlement these people have, for many it’s a mental disorder. Was it Bush’s Chairman of his Council of Economic Advisors that got caught stealing stereos from Target and returning them for a refund?
Thanks attaturk, it’s no wonder the Sununus are out there, a la Agnew, doing the insult routines, since if the candidate said his own lines it would be unpresidential. Like taking charge of a public elevator and designating it exclusively to his own use, my favorite Rmoney gubernator created entitlements.
Sununu — “Because Agnew is Dead”®
Why not? A President Rmoney would take tax payer funds and designate them for the sole use of himself and his rich patrons.
Well, yep, and then like w blame us for believing his lies. (Said we the voters were responsible for war because we believed him.)
Good morning, pups. It’s Keller and Krugman today. Mr. Keller thinks that, with his help and advice, there might be a “Presidential Mitt.” He offers up a laundry list of what Mitt Romney can say in Monday night’s debate to sound like a credible commander in chief. The odd thing is that all of the things that he suggests Money Boo Boo espouse are things that President Obama is doing… Prof. Krugman, in “The Secret of Our Non-Success,” says the Romney camp denies and distorts the evidence about how we recover from a severe financial crisis.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. It’s Monday again, but there are only 39 days to go… Now it’s time for me to go and feed kittehs and then stand and scratch my head in the kitchen over what to bring for lunch. Have a great day.
Thanks, Marion, and Keller is right on, as long as Rmoney continues to lie, he’s in great debate approach. If he forgets and says what he’s really up to, he’ll lose. What are the odds voters will remember what he actually has done?
I’m hoping Romney does open his mouth and say what he’s really doing and what he really thinks. Can you imagine? The way he spoke to the President, especially at last weeks debate, was barely veiled. Maybe he’ll forget he’s not at a roast and blurt out something that will have all jaws dropped.
Well, it could happen.
I don’t think it’s an unreasonable expectation demi. He’s surrounded himself with the worst kind of wingnuts and demonstrated a willingness to listen to and repeat the worst kind of wingnutty tripe.
Granted, he’s being a dick. But a similar position in America’s government would probably fly first class and expense it back to the taxpayer. While claiming to have SAVED the taxpayer money by not taking a government charter.
Boxturtle (I sometimes wonder if we’d have a better government if folks like this pumped their own gas)
Gotta go to work!
I’m with you, and Margaret, and see that superego scrapping with his handlers to let go and be Mutt. Would love to have that happen
We share the blame. Hell, we REELECTED him!
Boxturtle (I probably feel more guilt for my part in those wars than he does for his part)
My apologies to lovely, companionable actual mutts everywhere.
Any guilt that w ever would feel would have to emerge from a base of moral convictions that I cannot imagine his ever having possessed.
We won’t even notice when he does it. it won’t even likely be reported.
Boxturtle (Did you hear that Tom Hanks dropped an F bomb on GMA? And what’s up with Snooki….?)
Yep, he’s swallowing his own propaganda and he’s to the point where I’m not sure he remembers what’s real and what’s raw meat for his base.
Boxturtle (In Mitt’s defense, I think Obama is believing his own propaganda as well)
We all believe our own propaganda, but some of us have a moral base.
I thought I heard a soft, confused growl in the background!
Quick, Marion, grab your bisquits.
I felt at once the wrong to gentle creatures. My bad.
That usually shows up in what actually erupts into action.
Ah ha! We were just sitting here talking about the comment he made this week about if he becomes president they could make progress by doing “nothing”. That was something.
As gubernator in MA, that ‘nothing’ amounted to negating positive actions by the dominantly Dem legislature, and effecting right wing policies, in violation of all his campaign pledges.
And, really, Ruth, you don’t want to be like Steve King…
Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) on Sunday stood by eyebrow-raising comments he made in May, insisting that he was praising immigrants when he compared selecting visa recipients to choosing a “good bird dog.”
“It was a compliment … They knew it was a compliment, they turned it into an insult because they’re professional hyperventilators,” the immigration hardliner said in an interview on Des Moines NBC affiliate WHO-TV, posted by a site run by the campaign of his Democratic opponent, Christie Vilsack.
You know, there’s a difference between not being able to fulfill all your campaign promises because you have a congress that stops you and not ever have had the intention to fulfill any promises.
(I’m still waking up so I might have worded that clearly.)
From the leading pro hyperventilators, that’s as hilarious as Rmoney of the ‘Obamacare’ and ‘Class warfare’ bumpersticker campaign call the Prez’s designation of his Romnesia a ‘word game’.
This from someone who should spend most of his interviews breathing into a paper bag.
Boxturtle (Don’t believe me? Hey Steve! marriage equality! Choice!)
I figured the term Professional Hyperventilators would get a reaction here, and it just might become our new favorite. :)
King’s dependably tasteless displays are a total condemnation of the voters that keep returning him to office.
It’s amazing how different ears, different morality bases, will hear words. How is that okay to anyone? Dogs? Really?
BTW, I’m enjoying learning from the kid here who’s taking sociology. Last week, I learned the term Cultural Relativism. How we shouldn’t judge people on their behavior which is acceptable within their own culture.
So, there’s that.
Apply that to white old men wearing robes, and we all have to forgive their stealing our rights.
It is a conundrum.
I guess if someone’s behavior, and/decisions, affects everyone’s rights then we can and should judge them.
That’s the standard I’d go with. Thanks.
Anyone fascinated by this sort of thing should visit Mass. It’s a cottage industry here and appears in so many forms.
The cheating on the train fare in the UK is kind of petty, and suggests a character flaw more than financial need. Rather someone senses a need to get away with something other than just the money itself. It’s inexplicable self gratification, and you almost have to feel sorry for them obsessively having to break a reasonable social norm. I wonder if it’s like an addiction to gambling or alcohol.
Here in Mass we also have the petty stuff somewhat like the UK’s train seat cheater. A few years ago State Sen Diane Wilkerson got caught on film and convicted for stuffing money into her oversized bra — proceeds from liquor licensing corruption. And then Boston Councilman Chuck Turner got caught taking a kickback. Both Wilkerson’s and Turner’s take was $1000, at least that was the part that got them in trouble. Could have been a lot more outside the official cases, over time. I don’t know.
And then there’s John Kerry, who didn’t pay excise tax on his multimillion yacht. It was berthed over in RI, where he’s not a resident, instead of in MA. The media caught on and he eventually paid some hundreds of thousands in MA. Still petty though, I think, mindful of the fortune there. A much smaller but similar example would be Elizabeth Warren, who didn’t pay her excise tax in Cambridge until the media caught up.
The difference between Wilkerson//Turner and Kerry/Warren is that the latter were not doing anything technically illegal. At that point cognitive dissonance in MA will grant a pass in those cases once someone pays up, even if it’s because they got caught and paid after that fact.
Perhaps in MA there’s a reason legal, but questionable, character flaws can skate with relative ease. I think a critical mass of locals are simply numbed and inured by the prevalence of more serious corruption, and it’s nothing new. The really big time stuff overwhelms, such as the last three (3) House Speakers in a row, which have been indicted by the Feds. At least one is in jail already, I don’t know about the other two. So it may be understandable for honest citizens, who are victimized, to have to suppress and tamp down everything below a certain level. . . and simply move on.
