Just a few weeks ago, Ohio Secretary of State John Husted was doing all he could to keep as many traditional Democratic voters as possible from voting. It did not go well – and all that attention to “voting rights” has had another consequence.
Looks like some unintended consequences for Husted and his original intentions.

About Firedoglake
John Husted yesterday:
Toledo Blade reporters assumed he was using the homonym “steel”. You’d think after the past year they wouldn’t get snookered like that.
Isn’t Husted one of those Republicans who have been bragging that their efforts will deliver their state to Rmoney? The chutzpugh is amazing to witness. Nothing like publicly boasting about suppressing the vote. I guess Holder is too busy harassing medical marijuana users to pay any attention to trifles like voter suppression. It looks like the Voting Rights Act needs to be extended to the rest of the states.
Good morning, pups. Today we’ve got Brooks, Nocera and Bruni. Bobo has decided to try his hand at speech writing. In “The Opening Statement” he gives us what he thinks Mitt Romney should say at the first debate this week. Over the course of the campaign Charles Pierce at Esquire has written some suggested speeches for Mittens. He does a great job. Bobo tried today. He’s no Charles Pierce… Mr. Nocera tells us “How Punch Protected the Times,” and that the special structure of Times Company stock has kept the newspaper in the Sulzberger family. Mr. Bruni, in “Trembling Before Mitt,” says in advance of the first presidential debate, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney try on the unfamiliar garb of exaggerated humility.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got lemon poppy seed muffins today. As far as voting is concerned, as long as voting happens (as it does down here) on touch-screen machines with absolutely no way to verify the totals as accurate as far as I’m concerned any election is open for fraud and vote changing/stealing. It makes me crazy. I need more tea now. 59 days go to. Have a great day.
If anything, Husted accomplished the exact opposite of his goal. Seems like more people are paying attention to when and where and how they can vote. He’s got a number of groups, some traditional GOP like the military, watching him closely.
A simple change in voting hours for early voting was not expected to get this much publicity.
Boxturtle (Like roaches, when the light comes on and stays on)
Yep, that’s him. It’s still close enough in Ohio that between electornic voting and Husted, they might succeed. But the momentum seems to be the other way.
Lot’s of yards in my enighborhood that are full of signs for GOPers, but oddly nothing for Rmoney.
Boxturtle (More sigs for the local sheriffs race than for BOTH candidates)
I think that the level of voter suppression we are seeing around the country says a lot about the decline of democracy which is being spearheaded by the Republican party.
All see here is a chance for a highly partisan secretary of state to find a million new GOP votes.
Melissa Harris Perry does a segment “This week in voter suppression.”. Too much material to work with, I’m thinking.
Secs of State matter. Down ballot does not stop at the Congressional races.
Like I siad, he pissed off some traditionally GOP voting groups. The Military. Retiree’s. Church goers. All used the early voting. This may end up actually COSTING the GOP votes.
And while Mitt is dying, they still have faint hopes of unseating Brown. Me, I don’t see it, but they seem to think so. Still lots of outside money in that race.
Boxturtle (Amazing how many yards there were with Brown or Mandel signs, but nothing for Prez)
Seeing the same in ND. Lots of signs for the Senate race (Go, Heidi!) big money for Berg coming from oil and the Chamber that calls itself US.
david gregory overtalkingElizabeth Warren last night?
MoJoes mocking her answer to which Repub she could work with… Her Lugar answer was spot on…
which Repub would work with her one could ask. The Repub partisanship so extreme off to the right there’s no rational ones remaining. that’s why every one of us must vote them out in our own states.
Hey Husted, how’s that block-y vote-y thing workin’ for ya?

I get lots of e-requests for $$; they need to count me out since I live farrr away.
Getting Obama back to dismantle our remaining protections is no picnic, but you have to be heartened by seeing the Republicans in retreat on several fronts in recent weeks. Something to build on.
Really well-phrased comment!
