Michele Bachmann is hardly the only politician who stretches the truth, or even outright lies, but even among them she is among the most voluminous liars in recent history. An author of bullshit in Asimovian proportions.
Jim Drinkard, an Associated Press (AP) editor who oversees the wire service’s fact-checking work, said, “We had to have a self-imposed Michele Bachmann quota in some of those debates.”
After the session, Drinkard said that there wasn’t an actual numerical quota on Bachmann at the AP. It’s just that if the AP had gone back and vetted all her claims that looked dicey, the result would “overload” the debate story.
Truly a great achievement in both politics and journalism.
Hard to believe the Party that has perfected denying evolution, global warming, and scientific polling has taken fabrication to a delusional level.
Bachmann, by the way, is actually in an actual of battle for her seat this year against Democrat Jim Graves who to my knowledge lies no more than an average politician, perhaps even slightly less, feel free to donate in the name of far less crazy and a normal level of fabrication.

Sadly, the total fabrication is just a result, of having a constituency of lunatics.
Rmoney pollster Neil Newhouse said,
If one is enjoying the company and services of a paid escort, the last thing one should do is mention the word, “whore”. Bad manners of the privileged class. Saying the word itself may make the experience marginally more enjoyable, but the net effect is ruinous.
AP consorts with dogs for nickels and gives change, but you have to allow them to pretend they’re still dignified and virtuous. It’s the brand.
They don’t need no steenkin’ facts.
Good morning, Ruth. Something about the use of the word “Asimovian” above galls the withers.
Pffft! Sounds like an excuse to me. Wanna bet they do the same thing when Rmoney and Ryan lie during the upcoming debates?
Lies are a great debate tactic, after all. Since there’s no way that you can prepare for them, they’re unanswerable.
More is revealed about the state of the toady AP and Mr. Drinkard (Drinkard?) than it does about Bachmann.
If someone like Bachmann (the entire lineup of R Party allstars) is completely full of shit and you don’t call them on it, then you validate the bullshit.
That’s how we went to war in Iraq, for one trifling example.
Trickle-down economics, Job-Creating Tax Cuts, Free Trade Agreements, Austerity for prosperity, Self-Regulating Industry, School Vouchers, Private Prisons, Personal Retirement Accounts, Health Insurance, etc.
All Right Wing Bullshit designed to fool the rubes into believing they’re getting something other that their jobs outsourced and their purses robbed.
Of course, Obama and The D Party have co opted the same material.
LMAO! Just couldn’t resist, could you?
What, you haven’t heard the dems insist that prosperity will be gained by eliminating taxes on the Creators? You must listen to the wrong sorts of noise.
The only reason it could even be considered a debate tactic is because organizations like the AP have been engaged in false equivalencies and granting opinions the same credence as facts for so long. You know, like allowing the fossil fuel industry to redefine climate change and clergy to discuss policy issues. At some point people have to say “stop” and not allow the line between fact and opinion to be blurred.
Media gets flack when they refute the lies, also. The right wing is organized against those evil facts that hurt their attempt to defraud the public.
I guess. Maybe I’m too nuanced. I don’t believe blocked and ineffective = lying and equivocating.
The media has been more abused than usual by the Republican candidates. But getting used to it is the hallmark of their profession. Soon it’ll be the new normal.
Good morning, pups. Today we’ve got Brooks and Krugman. Oh, gawd. Bobo’s playing armchair psychologist again. In “The Psych Approach” he babbles that there are strong links between our childhood experiences and adult lives, and that the emotional basis of success should have a bigger role in education. Prof. Krugman looks at “Europe’s Austerity Madness” and says here’s why the protesters in Spain and Greece are right that inflicting more and more pain serves no useful purpose.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got banana pancakes for breakfast. Gosh. To me this sounds like a perfect time for AP to become a job creator. They could hire several thousand new fact checkers just in time for the debates, and then starting right after Thanksgiving they can start on the burbling cauldron of crazee that the Republicans will light a fire under, leading up to 2016. Silly of them to miss this opportunity… Have a great day.
Judging by the effects of actual policies instead of implication, shame on you.
Thanks, Marion, that’s a classic. Bobo wants the poorhouse back, no doubt, to use to threaten with in that little ‘learning’ experience.
I must admit I’m impressed. She’s the first politician I know of who actually did overload the lie detector! Even Newt couldn’t accomplish that.
And now she might lose a solid red seat because of her blathering and anti-moslem paranoia. That’s just excellent.
Boxturtle (She can have Sarah’s leftovers on the rubber chicken circuit)
When I debated in high school, we had to have a cite on a 3×5 card for EVERYTHING we said. Before I was done, I had created almost 1000 3×5 cards for the various topics. And I did it without any staff.
I see no reason not to hold the presidential debates to the same standards.
Boxturtle (Other than neither candidate would attend if they had to back up what they said)
Maybe she could learn to twirl a rope while she ‘entertains’, like Will Rogers.

That’s right! Mandatory predator economics in high school, except for those who can’t afford private schooling. Those people get either submission 101 or advanced home making, depending on gender.
Yeah. See the “debate” on global warming as an example.
It really annoys me that the GOP kept us from doing anything to prevent it until it was too late and they’ll NEVER be called to account for all the damage that’s going to cause.
Boxturtle (takes comfort knowing that most beachfront property is owned by GOPers)
Realistically, they could fact check the debates with a dozen or so more staffers. Practically, I understand their problem. Correcting misstatements could easily add a zero to the number of words in the story.
Perhaps they could just cover the ten biggest lies of each side.
Boxturtle (Wonder how Rmoney will allude to Obama’s birth circumstances)
Some scientists with actual degrees in climate science have called 93% of what FOX “News” puts out on climate change “staggeringly misleading”, which I guess leaves the other 7% in the just misleading column.
I’m thinking that no minority or moslem would be comfortable around Michelle and a rope.
Boxturtle (I’d probably be amazed at how quickly she can tie a noose)
Reminds me of something I read in “Bush’s Brain”.
Young Rove was a HS debater. He wheeled a great cart to the arena – with thousands of catalogued index cards. Most of them were blank.
It was an intimidation tactic.
We learned in HS that the kids who won offices were the ones that counted the votes.
That would be false equivalency writ large.
Gotta go to work.
Certainly no LGB or T person.
We learned from watching debate opponents grab a card at random, pretending they were reading, especially when we’d done enough research to know that there was no such evidence. Of course, we had to debate both sides of the topic.
Happy Friday.
Most scientists I know ignore Fox. Except for entertainment value. probably the other 7% consider Fox beneath their notice.
Boxturtle (Can you imagine the stories Fox might have written about Galileo?)
If we cited a card, the card had to be placed on the judges table for review.
I learned that snapping the card as it was placed on the judges table made it seem more authorative and they tended to accept it without review.
Boxturtle (The winners were the people who studied judges, not the topic at hand)
We were the public school debaters, never even imagined making up facts – the religious private school debaters were a shock to us.
I thought it was particularly amusing that the WaP00 is running a series on fact checking. They are commonly known in progressive circles as “Fox on 15th.”
What I remember from taking speech in college were the bumper stickers that read Speech Communication Majors are Master Debaters.
Would I lie?
Bingo!!!
thugian bullyism gets an early start. perhaps mr. bobo’s interventionist preschools could have helped him.
In the field of great liars, we have one here in WI whose name need not be spoken. Lying and hiding the fact that HUD called him out months ago, he is the chair of his quasi-public/private partnership going by the name, WI Economic Development Corp, for illegally distributing federal funds from HUD. Lots of questions unanswered. Lots of excuses being made, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel minimizing the seriousness of the HUD charges.
Long but very informative article by Chris Liebenthal who subbed for DDayen last winter.
WaPOO wanted w to be right so badly, its editors grew angry at those mean facts.
I once coached a women’s soft-ball team with a very similar team name. Great group of individuals.
Like a rug. My favorite comparison.
Some of that sort rule the courthouse here. The schools were pressured to eliminate gifted and talented programs for teaching witchcraft. Yes, I’m serious.
Hey. People who can take care of themselves (and have a decent sense of humor) usually are. :)
You may…But not about that…Thanks;) Funny way to start my morning…Late day here and maybe rain.
Yes, hard to believe that Repukes lie constantly. How do they do it? Maybe because the “Media” self-impose limits on the amount and nature of the lies they’re willing to report. What an absolutely horrendous thing for an editor to admit. Drunkard, you douche-nozzle, don’t you think that fact that Republicans can’t open their mouths without bullshit flowing freely is something the American electorate would want to know? Don’t you think that it bears directly on who and what Republicans are??? Fuckers
