About Firedoglake
Good morning.
U.S. ambassador to Libya & 3 Americans killed in protests over anti-Islamic U.S. made movie.
Good morning and thanks for the post and host SoDrag.
MSNBC is reporting this morning that the US Ambassador to Lybia has been killed (unconfirmed at this point) in an attack on the Embassy in Bengazi. At the same time the Embassy in Ciaro was over run by protesters and had been evacuated. All because some shit-disturbing Florida radical religious freak promoted some stupid rabid anti-muslim you tube video. This would be the same asshole that threatened to burn Korans not long ago and caused some deaths in Afgahnistan.
Hey, Holder, do your fucking job for a change.
(sorry)
That Libyan thingy to save lives worked out well.
Good morning, pupses, and thank you, SD.
Maybe they will find the remains of his nephews, the two little princes in the Tower, as well.
I always loved Richard III. I don’t think he had them murdered.
Good morning eCAHN and other sleepy pups.
Definitely watching the Chicago strike.
And last bullet, I misread “friary” for “fairy” and was wondering whether King Richard III was a medieval fairy.
Dean Baker has a useful chart at CEPR:
The Pay of Chicago School Teachers and Selected Others
An “other” in the article is Rahm Emanuel.
My cousin and his wife both work for Chicago Public Schools. Have not spoken with them yet, need to call this afternoon. He is an assistant principal and she is a speech therapist. I know they dispise Rahm with a passion and believe he has his eye on a presidential run.
Bon Jour, Mes Amis
Thanks, Dragon.
Go Teachers!
The Morning JOkE crew, minus the JOkE and Mika, were bashing hell out of the rmoney campaign for a press release that was really stupid. I am just sickened by the inability of our corporate overlords to mind their own fucking business when it comes to other country’s business.
4 Americans including ambassador killed in Benghazi.
mouthy cleric triggered, mouthy Romney campaign grabbed a moment.
msnbc reporting measured . salut to them. condemnation on those who drive mayhem over an internet movie nobody even saw. and netanyahu oughta stfu.
I am noticing that Moslems do not accept the American concept of free speech.
If I went around burning down things that belonged to people who wrote things I didn’t like, I’d be in jail.
Still, we make allowences in our 1st amendment so we can crush the Occupy movement and supress demonstrations around political conventions, perhaps all the Moslems want is a similar exception for Mohammad.
Boxturtle (fair is fair)
My daughter is a teacher in Noblesville, IN, but her position is not as a regular classroom teacher and I’m pretty sure she’s not part of a teacher’s union. She teaches technology as one of the “specials” the children have at various times during the week, and has every student in the school in one of her classes.
Great chart, and the comparison of US teacher pay with that in other countries puts ours near the bottom, no surprise. That in addition to the fact that ours don’t receive single payer health coverage.
I find your first sentence a tad (cough) over-generalized. No need for that, imo.
RE voter suppression, I’ve just begun reading the Demos report and it is very scary.
Bullies at the Ballot Box (downloadable also as a PDF)
Mornin’, pups
He is doing his job. Protecting the interests of the oligarchy.
Hope her school system isn’t strapped enough for her “special” contribution to be eliminated. USA! USA!
If I’m not mistaken (and I may be), health coverage is one of the issues for the striking teachers. I know there are a lot of issues outstanding, although they’re close to agreement on pay. Everyone seems to want to blame “excessive” pay as the main issue, and it’s not.
Will he be running as a Republican or a “Democrat”?
You are late for work :). ‘Course, you were working late last night, like you do every night. Thank you. Need a coffee or an iced tea?
Now confirmed that US Ambassador and 3 others killed by an RPG at the Consulate in Benghazi.
The importance of the Chicago teachers’ strike extends far beyond Chicago. At last, there has emerged a real opposition to the disastrous changes in American public education–teacher firings and pay and benefit cuts, charter schools, privatization, teaching to standardized tests, denigration of public education itself. This is an event whose importance ranks with the Wisconsin protests and Occupy.
Had an exchange the other day with my hard right boss over the public employee bashing. He of course maintained that they are overpayed, blah, blah, blah. I simply told him there was a very good reason he can’t find skilled machinists and that guy, you know, the one that makes sure that when you flush the toilet the shit disapears, yeah, that guy, I don’t begrudge him a comfortable retirement. He of course had nothing.
Didn’t sleep well. Hit the snooze button and went back to sleep.
Far too busy kicking in the doors of medical pot clinics.
I see your point. Kinda like tarring all American Christians for the actions of Eric Rudolph or Westboro Baptist Church.
I apologize to what I hope are the majority of Moslems.
Boxturtle (I should have thought a bit harder when composing that sentence)
Well, I wrote a long reply and apparently was logged off while I was writing it, so I’ve lost it. Her “special” along with art and music and maybe gym, was instituted three years ago as a response to budget cuts. Yes, we all hope it isn’t eliminated, but a millage passed a couple of years ago that helps.
Are you still battling bronchitis? Do you need to see a doctor?
3 others. Marines?
Very good, then. Accepted. :)
joe klein blasting Netanyahu for cynical interference in US election
That’s weird. I just had to log in again.
Keeping my fingers crossed for her. It’s a pretty lousy country that shortchanges its students in favor of the filthy rich.
No soft peddling of his opinion, that’s for sure. I just said out loud, Tell us how you really feel, Joe.
Good for him.
About time somebody told him to STFU.
Dunno. I’d heard the Ambassador went there to help the staff get out so it’s possible.
Nothing they can do. Respiratory docs say all their patients having a hard time this summer and zilch for treatment.
I think he’s more than content to be the mayor, in order to try out his privatization schemes…so he can later become governor of Illinois and expand his neoliberal policies statewide later on.
Can’t say that he wouldn’t run for president eventually–but his personality and speaking style is too…jerkish to be taken seriously. Maybe as a VP candidate down the line maybe? I can see that.
Reports I’m seeing say at least one other was an attache to the ambassador. I haven’t seen any reports that suggest military personnel were killed.
word of the day: Butt out, Bibi!
Deeply disheartening.
Morning everyone. I’d love to say ‘good morning’, but this shit is bananas.
Thanks for the post and host SD.
I’m glad to see so much support in Chicago. It’s beginning to feel the way Wisconsin felt not long ago…
The IRS gave this fucker $104 million, but they won’t forgive my honest mistake on a tax return and want to garnish my wages for $3,700…
Latif dying in Gitmo is absolutely tragic. Marcy has had some great coverage over the last two days on that topic.
Chris Hedges is very much on a roll lately. He seems to be saying all the right things, and he’s not running for office, so I kind of trust him.
One of the FDL servers must have burped.
If it’s viral and not bacterial. Sometimes they prescribe an antibiotic if they think it’s bacterial.
I’ve had trouble understanding the public employee bashing, but I guess some of these rightards think public employee = government bureaucrat paper-pusher and fail to consider that public employees are firefighters and police and teachers.
EDIT to add: the government bureaucrat paper pushers work hard too, mostly, and provide good services.
Geez, more good news. Over 300 killed in factory fires in Karachi, per HP.

Already in the poliltical fireworks….Absurd.
Good morning, folks.
Things to watch:
1. The Chicago Teachers Union strike – 50,000 or so supporters in the street yesterday in the Loop, ending completely circling Buckingham Fountain.
2. Israeli-American real estate developer and “filmmaker” Sam Bacile’s sources of financing for the “movie” to be distributed by Christian fruit-loop Islamaphobe Terry Jones. What is its relationship to the Israeli pressure on Iran and Bibi’s efforts to get Romney elected and the Republican neo-cons back in power?
3. Who exactly were the folks in Libya who RPG’ed the US Consulate? More important than the folks who demonstrated at the Cairo Embassy.
I have run out of tolerance for the intolerant. I’ve begun to fire back with harsh reality. Had a coworker even try to suggest that there are no “facts” anymore only bullshit. Both sides do it, yakity yak. I stopped talking to him because he is only about 3 months off of a serious meth habit and doesn’t get much respect from me for his mental ability at this point.
Wow. Just…wow.
Whatever happened to the “investigation” into corruption of the Walker administration? Many seemed to suggest this would bring Walker down.
Gosh, if the U.S. hadn’t made war against over a dozen Muslim countries, I’d say you might have a point.
Those pesky facts have a liberal bias, don’tcha know…
Good morning everyone.
Thank you for the post SouthernDragon.
Obama’s been silent re the Chicago teachers’ strike, but Rahm hasn’t. Rahm, whose rhetoric this week has been identical to Romney’s, stands for the same thing Obama and Duncan stand for.
Is it me, or is Race to the Top a repackaging of Republican efforts to undermine schools and privatize education?
Teacher strikes are spreading to the Chicago suburbs.
***
We can only hope that this will spread like wildfire.
Sweet:
Petition: Have President Obama come home and “walk on that picket line” with the Chicago Teachers Union like he promised in 2007
Ya think????
Prediction: Never in this lifetime.
Will we see him do it, I mean.
20 million signatures couldn’t get President Bipartisan out there to walk the picket line. He has an agenda and it’s not of, by and for the middle class.
I do. Most Obama supporters probably don’t realize how bad Obama is on k-12 education. Obama needs to be called out on it.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.

Under the radar but proceeding. Part of the Capitol Police Chief action I mentioned above could also be seen as a feint from Walkergate by Walker DOA (Sec of Thuggery) Secretary, Mike Huebsch, who controls the Capitol Police.
Chris Liebenthal, who assisted FDL news last winter is on Walkergate with the latest.
I wonder how many votes in his home town he’s losing as a result of his mealy-mouthed bs on education generally and his silence on this strike in particular.
Local coverage from Chicago’s ABC-TV affiliate of yesterday:
See mine @ 69. Apparently this was already spreading nationwide: 23 states have current fights over using standardized testing bullshit to evaluate teachers.
good morning msmolly, I agree but have not been surprised.
Thanks for being here SD.
National Nurses United is supporting the Chicago teachers. They are my heros for working so hard for Medicare For All and the Robin Hood (financial transaction) Tax.

Gotta scoot, pups. Luncheon and style show at noon (a benefit for an organization that provides mammograms and cervical screenings for needy women), and several errands to do before I go.
Have a good day, everyone. See ya in the morning, probably.
Me, too.
Safe travels and safe home, pupses dears.
Ruth, if you are in transit, take care. Hope it’s reasonably cool when you get home.
She is in transit, probably landing in Philly about now, then on to Tx. She’ll be back with you all tomorrow I’ve no doubt.
Obama buried his comfortable shoes more than six feet deep for just this moment. I’m a dreamer but I’m no fool. Even in (especially in?) campaign mode, I wouldn’t bet on Obama supporting public employees or anything union-related. Why anyone would vote for him is beyond my imagination.
Mor ning pups. southern Dragon, I ‘m worried a out you. My own bronchitis didnt go away with usual treatment…prednisone multipack, but it got better.finally seems to be fading ; 2 nights os extra sleep maybe made the difference. Hadto skip yoga yesterday in favor of sleep (horror) .
The death of abassador to Libya so depressing. He seems to have been on the Libyan people ‘s side and popular. But mobs with rpgs dont distinguish individuals (no nor do drones). Sad.
Well, work waits for me too. Take care, everyone.
Thanks for the travel update. You are both going to have some adjusting to do :(
Hi, Om. I welcome Ruth back to Texas, where temps have dropped yo.pretty comfortable, but I lknow she will miss PA and Spud. And vice versa.
