MSNBC is reporting this morning that the US Ambassador to Lybia has been killed (unconfirmed at this point) in an attack on the Embassy in Bengazi. At the same time the Embassy in Ciaro was over run by protesters and had been evacuated. All because some shit-disturbing Florida radical religious freak promoted some stupid rabid anti-muslim you tube video. This would be the same asshole that threatened to burn Korans not long ago and caused some deaths in Afgahnistan.

My daughter is a teacher in Noblesville, IN, but her position is not as a regular classroom teacher and I’m pretty sure she’s not part of a teacher’s union. She teaches technology as one of the “specials” the children have at various times during the week, and has every student in the school in one of her classes.

Great chart, and the comparison of US teacher pay with that in other countries puts ours near the bottom, no surprise. That in addition to the fact that ours don’t receive single payer health coverage.

If I’m not mistaken (and I may be), health coverage is one of the issues for the striking teachers. I know there are a lot of issues outstanding, although they’re close to agreement on pay. Everyone seems to want to blame “excessive” pay as the main issue, and it’s not.

The importance of the Chicago teachers’ strike extends far beyond Chicago. At last, there has emerged a real opposition to the disastrous changes in American public education–teacher firings and pay and benefit cuts, charter schools, privatization, teaching to standardized tests, denigration of public education itself. This is an event whose importance ranks with the Wisconsin protests and Occupy.

Had an exchange the other day with my hard right boss over the public employee bashing. He of course maintained that they are overpayed, blah,blah,blah. I simply told him there was a very good reason he can’t find skilled machinists and that guy, you know, the one that makes sure that when you flush the toilet the shit disapears, yeah, that guy, I don’t begrudge him a comfortable retirement. He of course had nothing.

Her “special” along with art and music and maybe gym, was instituted three years ago as a response to budget cuts. Teacher strikes are spreading to the Chicago suburbs.

September 12, 2012 (LAKE FOREST, Ill.) (WLS) — Lake Forest High School teachers say they are on strike Wednesday, which means there are now two teachers strikes in the Chicago area.

Contract talks failed to produce an agreement before the 12 a.m. Wednesday strike deadline.

Students from suburban Lake Forest, Lake Bluff and Knollwood have no classes Wednesday, and there will be no sports practices or competitions until contract differences are resolved.

Pay is the key sticking point for the school’s 150 teachers, who are opposed to a two-tiered salary structure the board wants to put in place. Union members say they would make less money under the structure.

Chicago public school teachers were in their second day of strikes Tuesday. Thousands of teachers, nurses and social workers who are part of the CTU gathered at the Chicago Public Schools headquarters around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and marched through the Loop. It was the second day of rallies downtown.

”We did not start this fight. Let’s be very clear,” Lewis told teachers.

The numbers were down from the rally on Monday, the first day of the strike, but were still significant enough to stop traffic as they crossed major streets as they headed toward Grant Park’s Buckingham Fountain. Lewis joined the group during a break from negotiations.

She maintained there are many issues on the table, not just the two to which Mayor Rahm Emanuel refers repeatedly — teacher recall and teacher evaluation.

“Understand this- there are 49 articles in the contract. We have agreed to only six,” Lewis said. “The two key [issues], that’s the mayor’s talking points. Those aren’t ours.”

The union’s rallying cry has gone global. Since the weekend, the strike has been one of the most talked about Twitter topics.

With at least 23 states waging similar battles over teacher evaluations, Chicago has become the tipping point.
