All told, just over 20 million people were watching last night on the Nielsen-rated networks, compared to 37 million for night two of the RNC in 2008. Night one of the 2012 RNC was roughly on par with night one of the 2008 RNC ratings-wise, making the gap all the more dramatic.
It should be noted that the comparative day in 2008 was the night Sarah Palin spoke and the nation collectively said, “What the fuck?” well not everyone.
But the demographic Palin appeals to now didn’t have alternative programming available in 2008 — now that same demo can watch Hillbilly Handfishin’; Meet the Hutterites; or Honey Boo Boo. The market has spoken — because it cannot spell.
Of course, the Democrats ratings next week should be down too [I mean what have they got, Tom Hanks addressing a barcalounger?], sequels are never as good — especially following a four-year series.

About Firedoglake
Who’ll watch if they don’t have skin in the game?
One of the missing, here, when Clint started playing to Harvey I had thought he’d be better, just went on to bed.
Dirty Harry did Obama a big favor.
Good morning, pups. Today we’ve got Brooks, Cohen and Krugman. In “Party of Strivers” Bobo says the Republican Party unabashedly celebrates individual responsibility en route to material success, but our destinies are shaped by other forces. In “Made in the U.S.A.” Mr. Cohen tells us that all by himself he has built the perfect column for the second American century. Prof. Krugman looks at “The Medicare Killers” and says Paul Ryan’s big lie in his convention speech was his claim that a Romney-Ryan administration would protect and strengthen Medicare.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, the cold drinks are in the fridge, and for breakfast this morning we’ve got eggs Benedict topped with Scottish salmon. Something a bit special to reward us for having survived the last few days with our sanity (mostly) intact. The only way I could get through Rmoney was with the sound off, and live-blogging with you great pups. And I didn’t have to hurl bricks at my TV! Have a great day.
Thanks, Marion, the oddest aspect of Bobo’s observation is that he totally leaves out the most obvious fact that the party of the rich and nutcases celebrates what it has none of itself, the entrepreneurship of those other sorts. Krugman, otoh, chooses what no one could miss when the much vaunted Plan kills medicare quite blatantly.
I haven’t watched a single bit of it, just read the reviews after the fact. It sure seems like the GOPer websites are viewing a different convention than the rest of us.
My alternative programming last night was Dirty Jobs. They were catching evil tempered, poison snakes.
Boxturtle (I hope Mitt forgives me)
Like McClellan, (Civil War General who fought the Peninsula campaign for the North, ostemsibly), not sure Clint was actually on the side he claimed to be.
So you WERE watching Republicans after all… (I just couldn’t resist.)
Well, a bit of fact checking has been done on the ZEGS and Rmoney speeches. Here’s a taste:
That’s a very delicate way of saying that they were bald-faced liars, isn’t it?
The RNC has made an announcement that facts are not their problem. on the other hand, that is their problem.
Of course, the Times has slipped into that “both sides do it” head set. We’ll see if any of the speeches at the Democratic convention are as stunningly fact-free as what we’ve just been subjected to.
Much like Rush, this is not news but entertainment.
Boxturtle (In the same way a public execution is entertainment, I suppose)
Margaret had a great line last night — something to the effect that who knew Clint wasn’t acting in the movie, “Gran Torino?”
Watched a little on c-span. “Juvenile” was the word, in my head. Seemed more like a infomercial for a pack of Lucky Strike cancer sticks coming from a tax exempt trade organization.
Alternative programming! My suggestion for the next infomercial, or just a good history lesson….

Great stuff…
No reason there should be any similarities. The facts are our friends. Which is why the wingnuts Hatez them.
Changing the subject, I wonder; as sea levels rise and Gulf hurricanes get larger and larger; just how many times the country and the people of New Orleans will continue to cheerfully rebuild? Hell! This warming is proving to be such a show I hope I can live long enough to see how Mitt Romney’s sea level joke and Exxon’s CEO “simple engineering problem” turn out. The whole Petrochemical industry and the Republican Party need to be committed and loaded with Risperdol.
Early today, the GOP made the stunning announcement that Mitt Romney would be replaced as the Republican presidential candidate by a dining room chair. Apparently no word from the camp whether or not Paul Ryan would be replaced by a La-Z-Boy.
I watched almost the whole thing it started out strange and went down hill from there. Clint just added to the madness of all the angry white people.
It helped to have a drinking game;)
Thanks Marion, Breakfast was scrumptious !
