Oh dear, Todd Akin, this year’s Christine O’Donnell, who was 2010′s Sarah Palin, who was 2008′s — well we could keep doing this back to Theodore Bilbo and beyond — where was I? Oh yes, Todd Akin made the mistake of saying what he actually believes.
Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) told a local television station on Sunday that “legitimate rape” rarely produces pregnancy because “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
He believes it because he’s dumb and horrible — just like his old buddy, Paul Ryan.
Of course, once you say something patently stupid and offensive, the thing to do is to say you didn’t mean it — even though you totally believe it.
In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it’s clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year. Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve.
Unless, of course, those women who are raped would choose to exercise their right not to have their rapist’s child, then we all know who Todd Akin will fiercely advocate for — not them.

In Your Guts, You Know They’re Nuts, mysterious secretions edition.
…and yet people vote for them?
They’re going to shut the country down until they get the keys back.
It’s easier to give in to hostage takers.
The implication of course being that if a woman is raped and she subsequently becomes pregnant, she must have encouraged/enjoyed it. Way to make the victim responsible for the consequences of a violent crime.
Good morning, pups. Prof. Krugman is flying solo today. In “An Unserious Man” he says so much for the real debate we were supposed to have once Paul Ryan joined the ticket. What we have instead is the triumph of style over substance.
Here he is.
The coffee and tea are ready, the cold drinks are in the fridge, and the biscuits are out of the oven. I think I know what I’m bringing for lunch, but it surely will include some cantaloup. This year seems to be a particularly good one for cantaloups — the ones we’ve been getting are good enough to make your socks roll up and down. Have a great day.
Apparently if it’s a “legitimate” rape… (whatever on earth THAT means). I wonder if this creature has a wife and/or daughters, and what they have to say about this.
That blocks the secretion.
Nobody has brought up yet that this clown is on the Committee of Science, Space and Technology in the US House of Representatives. Just what we needed: another ideologue who has no interest in science directing our efforts in same.
I suppose if you’re going to be rabidly anti-abortion, you must accept the fact that your rationalizations will occasionally become public and you’ll have to pretend you were misunderstood.
Boxturtle (I understood him just fine)
Morning all,
These racist rabid republicans are a cancer on the body politic enabled by their voting machines. Are people with a IQ over 100 banned from this party or what ?
Even money says he got on that committe just to cut it’s budget and he has little to no idea what science is or why we should care.
Boxturtle (Why should the GOP support science when all science does is disagree with them?)
Thanks, attaturk, still to be discovered, what constitutes ‘legitimate rape’. We jump to conclusions when we assume that the victim has to be displeased, I believe, since how could legitimacy possibly shut down a functioning female reproductive system? After all, there are successful pregnancies produced by artificial insemination, so the standard of sluttiness just doesn’t apply. To be legitimate, a rape has to have bad intentions, I betcha, the standard now for actual discrimination. Proof of intention is impossible to establish, so discrimination cases are increasingly impossible to prosecute.
Okay, Akin is certifiably insane, but isn’t that what the teabaggage is all about?
Morning Joke is aghast that the R brand is yet again being diminished.
Naked stupidity in MO and naked bodies in Israel? Oh no!
Scabro sees the WH and Senate slipping away.
Yeah, this guy’s been a NASA hater at least since he entered Congress. Just more Republican nihilism. Put somebody unqualified on a committee whose mission he hates in order to “prove” that government doesn’t work.
Gotta go to work.
And Rep. Yoder is on the House Judiciary Committee.
You’re supposed to be horrified. It’s rule by Juggalo.
its always a calamity for republicans when what they really think slips out
Michelle Bachman and Louie Gohmert are also on committees, showing that hatred of functional government lives!
Will Mittens seize the Sister Souljah moment?
Hadn’t heard of Juggalos before (get off my lawn!), but having seen what they look like you’re right. Off to work…
“I jumped into the Sea (Galilee) without my swimsuit.”
Thanks, Marion, but substance is only for the mean Dems who don’t understand that taxes are for little people. And mom will love the trip on the iceberg.
Mittens never heard of it. But is it deductible?
The burning question is, did they pee in the Sea of Galilee?
If they did, we win back the House.
Our homo is Over Jordan.
The sad part is, as the political analyst said on CNBC this morning, it’s still highly probable that this guy will win the election against McCaskill, since she’s been highly targeted by the PACs. The sadder part is, he will get women’s votes, even after this statement. Cognitive dissonance doesn’t even begin to describe how any woman could vote for someone with this position.
Would be interesting to see how many R women agree with what he said.
Another reason, if you needed one, to bypass the State of Misery. A place comfortable with Limbaughisms and, evidently, a whole lot more stupid than one could imagine. Unfortunately, for 51% of our country’s citizens, this is the logical result of creationism trumping science. God’s hand, even in assault cases, controls all. Trust his fingers to turn the cosmic ” reproductive gears ” allowing, or not, the birth of a potential baby Jesus. In the new Nativity scenes down in the town square can we please replace the donkey with a Missouri mule and name it Todd?
becca @ 25: good morning! remember alvin greene? of course, this guy will win.
according to him, if you get pregnant that means you weren’t raped so claiming rape is not legitimate
it all works out in your own head if you can hit the stupid switch
TPM is saying this morning that the Missouri GOP has until tomorrow (Tuesday the 21st) to get this guy out of the nomination spot so they can have enough time to find a replacement.
Unfortunately, this guy won a three-way race very handily, so demanding he step down has the possibility of alienating the Missouri voters who thought he was the best guy.
The party is really ham-strung on this one, aren’t they? This could be fun to watch.
Have we finally reached the bottom of the barrel? Sadly: No.
I can pretty much guarantee that TeaPer females will vote for this jerk-off bc he’s so “godly” or some other idioctic nonsense. No doubt El Lushbo is on a roll today bellowing about how nasty-wasty the dirty LIEbruls are for “smearing” this “good man” simply by stating factually what he said.
They’ve all been brainwashed that if you “just pray,” all is well. Zombie Christofascists just march lock-step to the tune of their various “piper” preachers and Rush.
I beat he believes that when a woman is raped she shouldn’t fight back on the off chance that she can make a baby and anytime a woman can get pregnant, she should. The circumstances of creating a new human never matter to these jokers.
Martha McCallum, on Faux Noise this morning, apparently lumped this story in with the GOP skinny dip in the Sea of Galilee. She never directly said what Akins stated, but asked “how significant” the stories are and whether “they deserve the attention they are getting”, according to a report on Media Matters.
The steadfast Karl Rove has been asked for statements all morning, despite the fact that his PACs and other associations have contributed over $900K to Akins campaign – no conflict of interest here or noted.
So, if one only gets one’s news from Faux, you’re left wondering what all the hubbub is about and when can we get on with the next ‘Muslim’ or ‘Birther’ article, please.
According to right wingers, there is a real scientific question involved here that merits research. If a woman’s body is shutting down during rape and preventing pregnancy, is her body reacting this way after sperm has penetrated an egg or before? The answer to this question will determine whether a witch burning policy is merited or not.
