And also rare instances of spree killing:
Only two per cent of Canadians who responded to a new opinion poll believe climate change is not occurring…
The findings are in a survey conducted by Insightrix Research, Inc. for IPAC-CO2 Research Inc., a Regina-based centre that studies carbon capture and storage.
The online poll of 1,550 people was done between May 29 and June 11. The results were to be released on Wednesday.
“Our survey indicates that Canadians from coast to coast overwhelmingly believe climate change is real and is occurring, at least in part due to human activity,” said centre CEO Carmen Dybwad.
Granted the words “on-line poll” cause concern, but in comparison:
37% of Democrats believe global warming is the result primarily of human action, while only 14% of Republicans believe this. Conversely, 43% of Republicans believe global warming is the result of natural causes, up from 35% in 2010. Self-identified Tea Party members display still more certainty (49%) that global warming is caused by natural events.
I wonder what evidence those resisting this belief are relying upon?

Good morning all,
Saddled with a political system that produces losers instead of leaders we’re on our own for the ending for this greed driven drama.
It’s noteworthy that even the conservatives in other nations accept global warming as fact. America’s right-wingers stand alone in the world in their arrant lunacy.

I remember, in my childhood and teens when we used to visit Canada nearly every summer, that the two countries were quite similar in every way (I grew up in the upper Midwest). Canada (the English-speaking part) scarcely felt foreign. This was the early and mid-1960s. Now the U.S. and Canada have completely diverged, as the above story illustrates.
Good morning pups. Probably the main reason why Canadians have a better grasp on reality is that the CBC is still an honest organization, despite on-going attempts by the Harper government and Karl Peladeau (owner of Quebecor, and presumptive Canadian Murdoch) to neuter it. The other reason is that there are still some good newspapers (La Presse, Le Devoir, The Globe and Mail) that haven’t been subverted by going to the lowest common denominator to boost the bottom land. Even the tabloid Journal de Montreal was a good newspaper before Peladeau got his hands on it. Still carries the best crime news.
The poll would have been different had it been restricted to Albertans, who are the most Americanized section of the country. The tribalism there and in certain parts of the interior of BC resembles that of the Republican heartland. Not surprising. It was this region that received the greatest number of American immigrants in the early 20th century.
Those resisting are doing so either because they don’t want to bear the cost or their masters don’t want to bear the cost. Tea Party falls under the latter.
We’re past the point where we could stop global warming from hurting us, now we have to manage it. Do we puts dikes around Tampa Bay or evacuate it? How about Manhatten?
Boxturtle (Ohio will do well in the new world, we have fresh water!)
We’ve produced some GREAT leaders. They hide in the shadows and manipulate the losers running for office.
Boxturtle (And manipulate the fools who pick the losers)
Good morning, pups. Mr. Kristof is off today, so Ms. Collins is flying solo. She has “Middle Age Blues:” We are learning so much about Paul Ryan, people! But what will this all mean to the American health care system? Well, my guess is that the docs will be seeing a lot of cat-food related conditions.
Here she is.
The coffee and tea are ready, the cold drinks are in the fridge, and I’ve got blueberry pancakes this morning. Running late… Gotta go and get my lunch ready. Have a great day.
Any more news on Assange? I lost a night’s sleep over this, which doesn’t happen very often. First time was when the Supremes stopped the recount and declared Bush President.
Republicans and their followers are a drag no the nation. While the rest of the world moves forward on a variety of fronts the U.S. is stuck in place. There is nothing Republicans fear more than “change.” It would appear Canada does not suffer from the genetic defect of enlarged amygdalas.
He can stay in the Ecuadorian embassy indefinitely.
Unbelievable that the New York Times, the American “paper of record” is partially burying the Assange asylum story, not giving it prominence on its internet page. How this paper has fallen! Not worth paying for–10 free hits per month is plenty for me.
Odd that the Brits would threaten to go in and get him. I can’t remember them making that threat EVER before, not even over IRA. Offically, it’s over failure to use a condom.
Were I Julian, I’d start telling everything I knew publically. Once it’s out in the open, the heat might come off.
Boxturtle (Britan and Sweden should BOTH be embarassed to be such lapdogs)
Morning, and thanks, attaturk, how nice to have sane neighbors. Now what to do about nutty aunt Sally and her sort who’ve taken over the attic we were letting them use out of family feeling.
Where is fat Al Gore. He’s been all but invisible during this year’s heat. Some Global Warmest. He used it as long as it was useful politically, then dropped it (and dropped out) like a hot potato when he had no fish left to fry.
I wouldn’t waste a wink over Assange. He’s a master manipulator.
I’m not sure about Assange being a “master manipulator” or not. However, the way he’s been treated sends chills down my spine. I’m much more concerned about how this situation has been handled and what it means for the rest of us. Therefore, I am grateful that Ecuador has stepped up to the plate and is willing to stand up for individual rights and true freedom.
BTW, I agree with you about fat Al Gore. Truly was pondering the same thing on the drive to work today. Where IS he?? Pretty much out to lunch, just like he was in 2000. Too bad as his book & movie were pretty much spot on, but with Gore dropping out once again, it takes away from the true message. sheesh.
Same as it ever was…
