Mornin’, pups
Good Morning All…Thanks for the notes, SD. Still stiffling heat in TX. Not new, that’s for sure.
Good Morning SouthernDragon and Early Rising Pups
That fourth link regarding the mutations as a possible consequence of the radioactive spill in Japan gives a new twist to the Butterfly Effect. Wow.
Thanks, SD. So glad that alternative energy is being developed where it can do a lot of good. (On another blog, am debating hemp production with a friend who is sure that industrial farming will use irrigation and fertilizer, and grow more hemp – and I’m pointing out that individual farmers can grow it with little bother, and can sell it which is what they need to grow thing.)
Hillary’s gonna pick the next govt in Syria.
Meanwhile in the wake of Hillary’s visit Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar are being ethnically cleansed by the Buddhist junta. Tens of thousands killed, villages wiped out, huge numbers of refugees fleeing to Bangladesh.
Crickets on western press & blogs & in U.N.
Now why would the corporate press want to cover Myanmar when there are so many celebrities and politicians throwing maahvelous parties and soirees?
Got a link for that?
Nothing on the lefty blogs either.
Are you just making a reference to timing, or do you really think she’s the reason for the murders?
It’s all over presstv. They had a good live report this morning with a reporter on site. I don’t know if they’ve got a separate video up on it. I’ll look.
I don’t have time to watch online TV.
Morning all. SD, raising my hand for the study group.
presstv does not report that aspect, but my memory of following their coverage is that right after she was there, presstv reported 274 slaughtered Rohingya. Now we’re up to tens of thousands, according to presstv.
It’s my guess that Hillary made the Buddhist junta an offer they couldn’t refuse for U.S. to loot some resources, and the Rohingya happen to live there. Junta took it as permission to ethnically cleanse. But I’m guessing at that.
Suu Kyi is prolly in on it. She’s been asked about Rohingyas on her world jaunt and wouldn’t answer the Qs.
From an historic segment that presstv did on it, apparently the Brits started the antipathy as a divide & conquer when Burma was a colony, kinda like the Belgians did in Rwanda with Hutus & Tutsis.
IIRC Suu Kyi was educated in Britain & her family lives there.
Good morning, pupses, and thank you, SD.
Yes, please register me for the Wolff class. ysd is in, too, she said yesterday.
I’m ready for a nice new thick spiral binder and micro point pen. New shoes, too.
Here are the links on presstv.
Here’s a bit of hopeful news that there are still some judges with their hearts in the right place. Homeless feeding ban blocked by judge.
Brotherly love, anyone?
Back to school supplies.
Saddle shoes or penny loafers?
1) Standard prediction about Greece leaving the euro.
2) I think we’ve proven that biofuels from food crops aren’t a good idea. Put some unused land into production and try switchgrass. See if we can get more energy out than we put in. There are also a couple of pilot plants using alge to procduce oil. That method has potential. However, it’s still burning carbon and we need to move away from that.
3) Kansis, is that what you REALLY want? Ae you so anti abortion that you’re willing to let the GOP steal from you if that’s the price?
4) Only the beginning, I fear. What happens when the humans living in the unacknowledged hotspots have children? And imagine the sealife. Imagine is all you can do, as Japan still won’t allow independent sampling in their waters near Fukushima.
5) BP is coughing up money. A cynic might think they’re trading cash in return for no criminal charges against executives.
Boxturtle (Given O’s reluctance to charge political contributors criminally, why waste the money?)
That is a tough choice. Gonna have to ponder and cypher on that one ….
Sorry about that. I just realized that’s the general link to presstv. If you go there & put Rohingya in the search box, you’ll come up with links to their articles.
PressTV is out of Iran. You think there might be a little bias in their coverage?
On another topic….I do not know how much of Sojourner’s magazine is online. But the Sept issue has a fine piece on legacy of Paul Wellstone and a good peace on immigration by Jim Wallis….Both very positive.
I’ve read some of Jim Wallis’s writings and was impressed. Thanks, Bev.
I’m kinda shocked that got published. I guess because the data came from an area already admitted to be contaminated.
If the butterflys are doing that, imagine the much more sensitive frogs. Or fast reproducing sealife. Plankton probably has 100 generations of radioactive effect by now.
Boxturtle (I wonder if there’s any microbe life left alive within a mile of the plant)
Funny, trying to recall what alternatives there were to Buster Brown when we were little.

Putin is going to pick the next government in Syria or make sure they keep the current one.
Boxturtle (Russia is the key to Syria)
Hey, whatcha talking about? I wore Buster Browns when I was in elementary school. Ah, the good old days. :)
PS, on edit. Do you remember when we were kids we had three separate wardrobes? School clothes, Play Clothes and Sunday School Clothes.
Thanks..;)
Hi, I’m Buster Brown and I live in a shoe.
This is my dog Spot, he lives in one too.
(or something close)
Along with Froggie.
Plunk your magic wand, Froggie.
Hiya, kids, hiya.

Fruit flies which reproduce like … rabbits … are usually used to establish changes in DNA over short periods of time. When we study the Fukushima fruit flies, maybe we’ll know more. Plankton should also be interesting, or scary.
That’s Tige, we were on about this just last week.

Bastard’s appealed the order within hours. Must keep those unsightly homeless out of the tourist areas.
Boxturtle (Has anyone suggested homes might be the solution for the homeless?)
Speaking of Wellstone, sorta, do you think we have many Pups from the St. Paul/Woodbury area? Just wondering…
Whoa, trippy flashback, SD.
Froggy!
Keds. Red Ball. The nameless brands at Monkey Wards.
Boxturtle (I was all Buster Brown and Keds)
For college? Neither. Some sort of athletic shoes, whatever kids are wearing. High tops prolly. My grandson wouldn’t be caught dead in saddle shoes or loafers. Or were you joking?
Dogs name was Ty or Tie. Now I can’t get that damn rhyme out my head. And I still see the picture of the both of them on the inside heel.
Boxturtle (I could buy my entire wardrobe then with the price of sneakers now)
In my experience so far, about 2 months, they do much better coverage than anything in the west, including BBC. I’ve listened to their specials on cop violence in U.S. (yesterday) and it seemed pretty accurate to me.
They also do specials on other subjects, like stem cell research in Iran, that would put PSB to shame. An amusing factoid: Islamic scholars have determined that the soul is injected into the embryo betw 40-120 days, so stem cell research can be conducted on embryos less than 40 days.
Their agenda is to make the U.S. look bad and Iran, and Muslims generally, look good. That plays a role in topic selection. Once they select a topic, the specials I’ve seen on the U.S., like the one I mentioned above. do not seems biased.
Om said she was going to get new shoes for the Wolff class, so I was referring to her. And, yes I was joking. OMG!
Several very good programs have been providing homeless with homes, great success. NY and RI that I have heard about.
1. Cities want the homeless out of sight, out of mind. Businesses don’t like them hangin’ around on the sidewalks, etc.
2. No profit in housing the homeless.
Food Not Bombs in constant battles with cities over feeding the homeless.
The Japanese people won’t put up with this. Modern Japan has a history of transforming itself after historical traumas (Meiji Restoration following Admiral Perry’s visit in 1853; World War II).
spud; I’m so happy you all had shoes. Sniff.
If it’s up to Putin, Assad stays.
Not only do i owe you a drink, I spelled the name wrong on both attempts.
Boxturtle (Nostalgia: I miss Max’s Shoe Store in Belmont. Very kid friendly)
Scares the shit out of me. We are acidifying the oceans and doing who knows what to the plankton. Kill off the oceans and it is game over.
Don’t they also you rats for tests for the same reason. Short gestation perior or something?
Personally, just the word gestation gives me the willies these days.
al Jazeera has evolved from beginnings as almost entirely directed toward a formerly little served audience in the ME, into world wide function and recognition, do not know how that compares. It was IIRC not state sponsored, however.
I’ll take the cafe au lait, thanks.
All life on earth to end by 2087. Methane plumes in Arctic is cause.
Don’t have any idea if this work is credible but it sure looks scientificky.
And here they used to Xray our feet for fit….probably don’t
do that anymore. We thought it was a hoot to look at that
skeleton…;) Such small pleasures.
The reef of plastic in the Pacific just appalls me, too. I do try to cut my use of plastics in every way I can.
Last week, I saw my homeless friend, Bob, and went into the store to buy him a gatorade and when I came out he was clutching his chest and saying he didn’t feel well. I told him because I didn’t have a cell phone that I would go back into the store and use their phone. He said, No, don’t use their phone, they hate me. There’s a pay phone across the street, so I ran and called 911 and the paramedics took him to the hospital. I’ve noticed more and more signs on the doors of stores saying not to give the homeless any money. They’re not the boss of me. Which reminds me, I have a load of Bob’s clothes to wash and I better do them early in the day.
Al Jaz is owned by the Emir of Qatar. It went from being a decent outlet until Syria, with Qatar being a main sponsor of the terrorism there. After that al Jaz became the Emir’s propaganda mouth & I haven’t clicked on it once since.
When the wingnuts start fighting for life of fruit flies occurring at the moment of getting a hard on (‘scuse my language) we’re all going down the tubes
My first real job was at Skyland International, in the shipping department office. We manufactured Buster Brown apparel.
Is that what they call loving one’s neighbor? Very sad. Hats off for
your work.
We used to do that for fun, too. Scary.
Nothing in any red state, other than lock ‘em up in the nice private prison.
Training the homeless to build homes for the homeless seems a no brainer. Some get jobs and homes, some get homes and can now go look for a job.
Hell, just buy a cheap laundrymat and staff it and you’ve made a real difference.
Boxturtle (What am I saying? Homeless are for target practice and policetraining!)
Is “hard on” right up there with “blow job”? Are you looking for trouble, sister?
1) Very true.
2) Perhaps not, but it solves #1 and possibly more cheaply.
Boxturtle (But it’s more fun to bash ‘em or ignore ‘em. Or Bum Fights!)
They have been so badly abused and targeted here that the city has passes our alarm whistles for protection….must be real fun to beat up a homeless. What could that do for you?
Got to get things done, like get some buster brownie type shoes! Thanks for good company.
I just do a little bit here and there. You should have seen the Food Director of Mend’s face when I took him a large bag of ginormous zucchini last Saturday. Perfect for stuffed canoes to serve from their kitchen.
Yup. Putin will not let him be deposed unless his replacement is acceptable.
I do wonder if we’re not discussing possible names with Russia. All they really want is to keep their client, their base, and their arms deals. Assad isn’t required.
Boxturtle (Israel gives us a name. We ask Russia. Russia says no. repeat)
See ya later. Thanks for all of your good sharing.
Think I better get a few things done early here, so I’m taking off too.
Thanks for everything, SD, and I’ll see everyone around.
I believe it was “plunk your magic twanger, Froggie.”
And Midnight the cat would say, “Niiiice”.
I clicked Reply to SD at 31, but it didn’t work.

So the Koch Brothers have their filthy arms plunged up to the elbows into their puppets, the Chamber of Commerce and ultra conservative Republican candidates in Kansas.
Is this ever going to stop? Are we ever going to put a stop to the wholesale purchase of government, or are we too far down the road? I really wonder. Maybe this is truly what the country wants and we are going to have to live with it or get the hell out.
They are already seeing methane plumes from dissolving hydrates. Nat Geo wrote about it earlier this year.
Dunno that it will kill all life, but it will certainly contribute to global warming. Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas.
Boxturtle (When I fart, you can open a window. When the earth farts…)
They had one of those at Max’s for awhile. My dad wouldn’t let me use it. He was a physicist, he knew about radiation.
Boxturtle (I was jealous. Everybody ELSE could use it)
speaking of Fruit Flys
Aside from serving Wall Street as their top shill for the Bush TARP bailout for banksters, “in 2011, Ryan joined all House Republicans and 13 Democrats in his vote to keep Big Oil tax loopholes as part of the FY 2011 spending bill. His budget would retain a decade’s worth of oil tax breaks worth $40 billion, while cutting “billions of dollars from investments to develop alternative fuels and clean energy technologies that would serve as substitutes for oil.” For instance, it “calls for a $3 billion cut in energy programs in FY 2013 alone” and would spend only $150 million over five years– or 20 percent of what was invested in 2012– on energy programs.” Not too sincere, huh? Especially not when you consider that Ryan “and his wife, Janna, own stakes in four family companies that lease land in Texas and Oklahoma to the very energy companies that benefit from the tax subsidies in Ryan’s budget plan,” the Daily Beast reported in June of 2011.
“Ryan’s father-in-law, Daniel Little, who runs the companies, told Newsweek and The Daily Beast that the family companies are currently leasing the land for mining and drilling to energy giants such as Chesapeake Energy, Devon, and XTO Energy, a recently acquired subsidiary of ExxonMobil
I know. Never. Give. Up.
Just received some handouts and a small sign (and a pretty neat looking pin-on button) for the Robin Hood Tax from robinhoodtax.org
Still not sure that is a good name for a financial transaction tax. Too easy for conservatives to say we are advocating robbing the rich.
Bastards.
baby got gelded yesterday,i cried…sob
SD. I like the study group proposal. Thanks for the links.

And we could get our feet x-rayed right there.
Morning pups, just in for coffee, breakfast/brunch. Catching up on the comments.
Usually harder on us than it is them, but I know :(.
Post some pictures of him when you get a chance, please.
Hi TomThumb. I hope you will do the class with us, we have some good discussions.
How have you been? Do you lurk here at the Diner very often? Drop in and have a coffee and chat sometimes.
Got to go and do some food prep. My SIL is having cataract surgery and will be staying with us for a couple of nights. I’m making meatloaf and chicken enchiladas for tonight and tomorrow. There will be lots of leftovers for her to take home.
Safe travels and safe home, pupses dears.
Hi nonqui, there is some rhubarb cobbler in the fridge. See you later.

Ohmmmm
Good morning all you firedogs.
Thank you for the post and host SD.
Looks like I missed everyone today. Stupid activism is getting in the way of my blogging, big time. Sheesh.
When will we learn to properly prioritize our activities? Morning Kris.
Thanks SD, reading through yours and the commenter links. Then off to
vote.
Count me in on the Marxian Class Analysis group. Will we need to pay to view the class? I gotta plan…
Wow. You remember that show, too? I was just thinking about Froggie and his magic twanger the other day when I was home visiting my mother. Not to mention Jack Armstrong, The All-American Boy! Radio was so much better than tv.
Drinking Liberally tonight…
Orly? When and where?
Still is.
What, I look like a capitalist now? *g*
Thanks. found this at the Guardian.
I recall some of the lectures on his site requiring payment for access. I’ll gladly pay since I know the lectures are well worth it.
Black Star Coop….6:45; sorry, I do not know where that is. Says there will be a DL flag. Hope you can make it….
Heh. You, a capitalist? Not unless yer charging the dozen rent and box cleaning fees.
I don’t recall seeing anything like that and I’ve watched ‘em all except Resnick’s course on Capital, Vol 1. Harvey’s course is much better.
I see they’ve edited Resnick’s original vid so that it plays continuously instead of 50-some 4 minute clips. Might be worth watching. Lot of reading required.
Thanks for the link.`
Shit, I can’t even get ‘em to answer the phone, much less pay for anything.

And, I thought the Vince Foster allegations were bad.
I loved the film. Evidently there are more from that series on After Capitalism. Thanks for the link. I still flinch a little when I hear the word “communism”, even though I am thinking beyond capitalism. Does it affect you that way, at all?
In case you weren’t at the Diner yesterday, here is link to the Democracy At Work website that Richard Wolff is putting together. SD posted it yesterday. Another way to get beyond Capitalism through WSDEs – Workers’ Self-Directed Enterprises.
Hey, oldgold.
It’s been my experience that when a person seems to have an obsession with a particular person or topic, you cannot talk them off the ledge. And then if there’s any way to link those two things, it will happen.
But, I appreciate your comment very much. Thanks, oldgold. Good day to you.
I said Good day to you.
And, that made me think about how many times we’ve talked about context and lack of nonverbal expression can throw people off, and is part of this online experience.
I feel comfortable feeling that you, oldgold, took that on face value.
But, I also know that some people who have had an argument with someone, usually a failing one, who end a discussion with those very words.
For anyone lurking who’s not sure, I really meant it, and if I had an extra ten bucks in my wallet, I’d bet that oldslow knows that I do.
Wearing my Robin Hood Tax pin, and no one at Publix, Goodwill or The Bread Basket asked me about it. Neither did the new neighbor I met. Wonder what he is going to tell his wife about me :)

Back to the scullery.
I’m kinda curious as to the necessity of your original comment.
That was my honest reaction, because I’m curious to see how folks react to each others comments. I’d like to know if someone who really has a fiercely driven agenda can actually be swayed by others to their way of seeing and thinking.
I’m not fired, am I?
And, I’m not trying to make dog fights. I sorta hope you don’t see it that way.
There’s not a lot of necessities in my life. I pretty much go with the flow and bend when I have to. You may not believe that, but that’s okay too.
Then I would suggest observing the interactions without interjecting.
Really? I could’ve sworn… Maybe I’m confused, then. I know I had issues viewing the lectures because the idevice doesn’t support Flash. I must be making memory soup out of my frustration with the toy computer thingie.
Oh, Richard, really?
Look, demi, oldgold’s comment was meant for another commenter, we all know that. His comment was about one thing, yours another entirely and could be construed as judgmental. What purpose did your comment serve?
Presstv has some good articles from the Iranian perspective. As long as you understand the bias, the reporting isn’t bad. It ought to be used as one one source among many as *all* sources should be.
I was making a connection between oldgold’s comment and the way it related to other discussions that happen around here.
You had made a comment about the Diner yesterday that turned into a discussion about maybe why that is happening.
Whatever. I’m not gonna go round and round with this.
Thanks. Yes, there were two videos.
Communism? I guess in America it has always been a ‘dirty’ word and now with the failure of the economy to provide for so many unemployed, underemployed and failing to educate the young people without burdening them with debt……and so on, including endless resource wars…..maybe people are ready to try something different from what we have known. Like the general assemblies at Occupy.
Maybe what I support is a new system in which there is fairness. I like the idea of being a worker who has a vote in how the work gets done and being a co-owner too. I also like the Norwegian model where the government creates and sustains the unions and makes belonging to a union a civil right. Less inequality that way. But these are mere fantasies at this point in time.
They may be fantasies, but more and more of us are dreaming the same dream. I think it is critical for us to talk freely about alternative ways to achieve the fairness you mentioned. The more widespread the discussion the vocabulary will get away from the old kneejerk inspiring words and the more willing people will be to listen, I hope.
I haven’t read much (or anything, I’m ashamed to admit) about the Norwegian model. There are so many possible ways forward and the PTB have nothing to gain and everything to lose by us looking at them.
The intro says it’s a six part series and this was the first. I’m looking forward to the rest of ‘em.
When Americans hear “communism” the first thing that pops into their mind is the Soviet Union, China and Cuba, none of which is/was communist. Each is/was state capitalism.
The video clearly delineates a community (commune) working together to accomplish a goal, more anarchistic than socialist. There’s a lot of difference in the state and the community. That’s one thing we need to teach people. WSDEs are essentially communes, their participants communists.
You asked me a question, and I answered.
Eugene Robinson has a similar outlook in his piece in Washpost…citing
the value of the school bus driver. Nice lesson.
I love Eugene Robinson. If Mrs. Robinson ever decides to ditch him….
That’s great…seems like a sweetheart, doesn’t he?
That was a great article. Thanks for mentioning it, I just read it (upon your recommendation) and wanted to link to it, but the website won’t let me get back to it without registering.
Okay, I think it’s great when the thread keeps going, but Dragon’s hurt my fee fee’s, so i’m going to take off.

Im going to wade in very gently to say I wish you could learn something from this….I would even like to tell you what it is but Im afaid I don’t quite know how. But maybe if you give it some serious thought, think about some past episodes, maybe something worthwhile will occur to you. I mean that in the truest sense. B
I should have thought of that. Thank you.
