About Firedoglake
Thanks, SD, no mention that the Post Office doesn’t have any problems that weren’t deliberately foisted onto it by a privatizing minded congress. Banking would be hilarious, as it would serve the impoverished that congress has created, many of whom don’t have banks.
Mornin’, pups
Yep.
Morning SD,
Morning Ruth,
SD, On DaW link, I am always happy to see responsible potential solutions to problems rather than simply restating the problems. Thanks for the continued front and center with this.
I hadn’t been in the IWW very long when I thought that worker owned firms were a better solution and that’s been many, many moons ago. I’m really happy to see the concept fleshed out and gaining wider acceptance.
BTW, Caturday was missed, so an alternative was proposed, by bgrothus, with varying hosting. You can always drop by.
If Israel hits Iran before the election, they’ll get a sternly worded letter from Obama.
Boxturtle (the first new moon after the election is Nov 14 for Iran)
Good morning, everyone.
Caturday was indeed much missed, SD.
I’ve been able to only occasionally drop by FDL, of late, so I was taken by surprise at its absence and am damned glad that you are, hale and hearty, at your daily post.
DW
The idea of a fall start sounds like a plan.
Looks like the Diner is losing some of its steam.
What happened to Caturday?
I’m spending most daytimes outdoors, so rarely get on the internet except sometimes in the evening.
I put it on hiatus last week. Been doing it for 2 1/2 years and wanted to reclaim that time.
Some days are slower than others at any diner, I wouldn’t worry too much. FDL traffic overall seems down to me, at least in terms of posters. Can’t speak to the lurkers.
Boxturtle (Perhaps it’s all those left turns you have to make to get hee. :-) )
Diner seems to me to be doing a great job of giving FDL community someplace to discuss stuff generally and background on topics that aren’t standard fare, very good place and good for the blog.
I don’t blame you. I wondered at your devotion to it & thanks for all the good times. I must have gotten my cat near Caturday’s start, and it was wonderful to be able to share stories.
Now that she’s settled in & we are used to each other, much less going on.
Thanks again.
Yesterday it became Comfort and Joy, just as a proposal.
http://my.firedoglake.com/bgrothus/2012/08/12/comfort-and-joy/
Good morning and thanks for the post and host. I invariably miss Caturday live but always read post and comments very early Monday morning. I was confused this morning when I couldn’t find it. Your work here is much appreciated and it is more than understandable that 6 days a week is not sustainable. Do take care.
Good morning all.
Thanks. I’ll keep an eye out for it.
Besides the weather being compatible for outdoor stuff, I am also on the internet less in a more general way.
Learned much of what I wanted to learn, and it gets a bit repetitive after awhile.
I like to read books & have substituted more of that for less of internet.
Good Morning, Dragon and Pups
Thanks for this Diner. It’s a good starting point for me, at least, most mornings. :)
Yeah, do the math on ~12 weeks and look at the calendar. Maybe they want to upend O’s apple cart as well as Iran’s. Multitasking, etc.
The Real News story on this story, linked above, gives insight I’ve seen nowhere else. Seems almost the entire Israeli military and security establishment is against an Iranian attack and that only Netanyahu and Barak are really for it. Also appears that most leading conservatives not affiliated with Netanyahu oppose an attack, notably Benny Begin (son of Menachem Begin) who is a hard liner on West Bank settlements.
These are the true Dog Days of Summer. People are taking advantage of their final chance to do nothing before school resumes and the work schedule picks up.
Good morning, pupses, and thank you, as always, SD.
The Diner is a little like a dinner party. The host can only do so much. The guests have a responsibility, as well, to make sure the conversation continues and the evening is a success :)
This guest dropped the ball for a while.
SD, so glad to see the DAW website is up and running! Just signed up to be on the mailing list.
hi sd, appreciate the post & host — #1 read in the a.m.
ruth @ #1: i’m waiting for infrastructure bonds @ 5% restricted to human individual purchasers with ss# redeemable in person.
I can’t believe school’s about to start again. Won’t be long and the roads will be clogged with moms and tourists.
“If’n it’s tourist season how come we cain’t shoot ‘em?”
Here are the usage stats for the past 12 months.
I’ve been missing you. It’s just not the same without you, Om.
If Occupy picks up on the concept we could be in for a wild ride.
Well, SD, I’m often remiss for not commenting, but the Diner is a great start to the morning and your links often send me on very worthwhile journeys. I truly appreciate the time, energy, and consideration which you put into this five-day-a-week endeavor.
Frankly, I regard it as an institution of higher learning.
On par with the very best of the true learning “centers” … which may well NOT have poison ivy (wink!, eCAHN) growing on their hallowed walls …
None of us old cats have lots of time … yet I hold that you use yours most wisely, in deed.
Thank you, Southern Dragon.

DW
Any slightly responsible military would be against attacking Iran. It was the U.S. military that prevented it during W’s second term.
One of the advantages of having civilians in charge of the military is to keep the latter from doing bad shit. /s
Thanks, demi. Missed you guys, too.
Welcome, taking a break is something that we all do occasionally. I even go through times I sleep in, yes, really.
There’s no question that Bibi does not like Obama. If he thinks he can cause Obama to lose by going before the election, he will.
Boxturtle (but if he does that, he’d better hope he’s right)
Good morning! you have been missed.
Nice idea, but there’s no reason our taxpayer contributions can’t pay for infrastructure instead of bennies for the ultrarich.
But your brain is still hard at work :)
I’ve got to go and read that Post Office article. Banking? Oh, the sweet irony that would be…..

Hi there, you. Thanks. I’ve spent some time in the corner booth. You know the one ….. :)
I’m not real fond of Obama either but I’m not gonna do some crazy shit to prove it.
Fuck Bibi. Fuckin’ fascist asshole.
The military knows that unless we invade, the only thing we’re buying is time and not much of that. Bombs will only go so far.
If they can hit Irans 20% yellowcake and ALL the centrifuge plants, they might have bought 5 years. It’s more likely they’ll miss some of each.
Iran needs only enough fissle material and they’re ready. They’re not enriching past 20% now, but they will if they’re hit IMO.
Boxturtle (Best guess is that hezbollah can fire 20K missles in about 10hrs)
(am there every week day)

Hmm…we have dropped a bit, haven’t we? Wonder why…
Boxturtle (Perhaps we shouldn’t have shot Shooter)
SD, Missed the Caturday scene, but hope it’s a great break for you.
I’ll have to find time to link some of the pics…they were always
remarkable. Thanks for your work and good spirit.
Om, Very good to see your friendly face; Ive missed your charm and smarts..
Good Morning All…Im home today…feels very good.
And always valued input. (slips into booth.)
The Detroit area doesn’t get many tourists, except at Greenfield Village, which is a top-class history attraction and well worth a visit.
Once upon a time, Labor Day was an unofficial New Year’s Day: a new school year, new prime-time TV shows, new model year cars (remember shrouded cars on showroom floors?), and a new football season.
Like late summer everywhere. Those wounds were self-inflicted.
Om, I have a question. We were talking about the different terms for sweat and Molly thought the Southern version for a female was Glow. I was inclined to agree, but I was wishing we had you around for verification. And, here you are!
Labor Day was a big problem for a few of the anti-living wage crowd I worked for, was not celebrated.
Yeah. Suicide by police. Isn’t that what they call it. There’ve been a few of those.
They are what is left of an economic stimulus here, brother.
Good morning, RevBev. Glad you have a day at home. All the more appreciated when they are rare. I love all the smartingly charming faces around here.
ruth @ 34: tax $ for infrastructure?? surely you jest /s
maybe diverting some $ from the war on “al quaeda” would be possible as panetta had them down to less than 200 in Afghanistan a few years ago . . . surely our 60,000 troops have whittled them down to 199 or less . . . /s
GM, SD and diners! SD, I missed the last of Caturday last week and only learned about it from a comment, maybe from Margaret, on some other post.
Thank you so much for all you have been doing these last years with creating community here through your vision first about cats and then with the diner. I am mostly a lurker these days, do check the diner daily, but really not much time for hanging out.
Take care of yourself, it is too much to try to do all you have been doing, and it is important to have some rest and private time. All due respect to you and your family of four-legged fur-bearers. And thank you for the daily links. bg
It’s also the only thing that will keep FL afloat for another year, despite (P)rick Scott’s best efforts to bring low wage jobs to the state.
Yep, amazing how many chores there are….(and many to be ignored)
Yes. At one time, not too long ago, the site was regularly doing 2.5 to 3.0 million a month.
Wishful thinking, opportunity wasting here?
http://news.yahoo.com/two-quakes-iran-kill-180-injure-1-500-022135059.html
US humanitarian aid likely available, we have plenty of personnel and equipment hanging around in that region. Too far out of the box for reality?
Yes, I know.
Stop me before I spout again, in this case.
Pentagon funding is a really ripe field for cutting, forgive the analogy to harvesting.
You can ignore yours if you want to come to my house and help me pick tomatoes. Lots and lots ready for attention. Actually, I’m trading my morning walk for that. We could have some ice tea afterwards.
Hmmmmm.. Yes, I know several southern women who positively glow, rather than sw…, er, perspire. They are the same ones who never seem to look fat when they gain weight. They just get those softly rounded, feminine curves. Could just rip their guts out., lol!
Good morning everyone.
Thank you for the post SouthernDragon. Like many of the commenters above, this is my first stop in the morning, every morning that I am on the computer and I thank you so much for providing us a chance to interact with each other.
Real estate is a bad joke, but I hear a lot about bargain shopping there in former hot spots.
Thanks. In yiddish, the term is schvitzing.
On those women, I’ll hold, you rip.
Good thinking, there should be pallets of $$ lying around, right? As I recall, local suppliers were feeding the troops, they ought still to be around.
Depending on how early you get up/the sun rises there, this is a good way to start.
I spent a couple of minutes scanning the comments at the book saloon last evening. Couldn’t even tell you who/what the author/title was, but he said, in answer to a comment about about Osterity and his grand bargain and SSI, the solutions are raising the cap, raising eligibility age and reducing cost of living adjustments. I wanted to scream. Pretty sure he was nailed for that answer.
I think we are still suppying them with arms in Syria, but I have a hard time keeping up with the latest US covert policy speculation.
It was too cloudy here to see the Perseids last night before I went to bed and I didn’t wake up in the wee, small hours before dawn to look again. Did anyone get any great views? I used to love to watch them, when we loved out in the country. Too much light pollution here to. See much, even in good conditions.
And no mention that there’s no actual problem in SS, except that created by borrowing from it, so cut out the ability to borrow and poof! cuts are not needed.
That’s the tagline for Christy Hardin Smith’s Home Celebration blog, so fitting somehow.
Good morning from Indianapolis! I’m staying with my grandkids while DIL has outpatient surgery.
Sup firedogs. Happy Monday!
Thanks to SD for the post and host.
I’m wondering when the Post Office will stop dragging its feet and get on with saving itself. There are a number of things they can do independently, if I’m not mistaken, to boost revenue.
In local news – early voting for our proposed ISD tax increase starts in 2 days. The activism has been hot and heavy in my household, and I’m worn the fuck out. Only a couple more weeks and it’ll be over, one way or the other.
when we loved out in the country
Wouldn’t that make a wonderful title for a novel?
*waves madly at OmAli* We’ve missed you!
Sending you a virtual basket of tomatoes for all you hard work. Thanks for your inspiring action.
Oh dear! (blush) !!
G’Morning, Molly
How’s that blending process worked out? Do they all call you gramma, or do they have some MimiMolly nickname?
No, really. I think it’s inspirational. You know there have been inventions based on mistakes.
Good to know, thanks. Hope you enjoy family then, and all goes well.
Hi there!!!! Thanks. Missed you, too, truly.
Having fun with the critters? My girlfriend is in CA with her granddaughter while Emma’s parents are away. Looking forward to the chance to do that, soon. The Lentil is expected in about a month and I.can.hardly.wait!
Ruth, I am so erratic in getting up because I do not have to set the alarm.
Some morning on here I am one through five, some mornings of late, I am real late to the good discussion.
Missed that, but that;s pretty hysterical. How about a real economy? Oh, silly me.
My mouth is watering at fresh tomatoes….reminds me of my long ago youth.
Thanks. At least we are supposed to be a bit cooler today.
I am thinking good thoughts for your DIL today.
What a great mother-in-law you are.
Hi AC2. We used to have an afternoon crowd here at the Diner, bur the summertime has taken its toll. Maybe as the cool weather returns (oh please oh please oh please) we’ ll be heading back indoors and can start that lunch and afternoon shift back up again.
comfort and joy is Christy’s blog.
I love tomatoes! Thx demi.
p.s. often ysd and tejana stop by in the afternoon, so we do have a core to build around.
Need to head out, you pupses have a great afternoon! Safe travels and safe home, everyone.
ohmmmm
OmAli,
We missed you!
Hope you got recharged and yes, the noon Diner and late afternoon will be great to come in and meet and greet after we get our daily chores finished.
Romas, Big Boys and Heirlooms. You can have some of each.
I’ll be making and freezing sauce this afternoon. Seriously, there’s A Lot!
or, it fareeds her.
would be nice to have a Diner hotbutton up top all day. i drop by early some days, way late others. The open door would be welcome, not expecting SD to be behind the counter all day :-)
Don’t sweat the numbers, this is likely a seasonal factor which will adjust back up, she proffers based on more years than she wants to admit to leading groups….
Thirty well known progressive people (friends and regular acquaintances) on my call list to recommend my preferred state district candidate for the assembly. Primary tomorrow.
Starting that in about an hour. I hope everyone has something very enjoyable on their to-do list today.
Peace and resolve.
See you later, then. I’ll be here, (glowing) over a sink full of hot, soapy water :)
You sure know how to tempt a guy. Those are my favorites too.
Surprisingly, even with the extremely dry weather around here, I can buy good tomatoes at the Farmer’s Markets.
That would work, easy access would be nice, I don’t come by because it would take so many steps sometimes.
Thanks for all you do.
Thank you for all you are doing in the political realm.
I always enjoy your “take” on what is happening.
Yesterday, some of the pundits were exploring the idea that because Ryan is on the ticket, Wisconsin will go red this time around. I chuckled nervously at that one esp. since the recall did not work for us.
I bet your are wearing that Southern Belle flowing gown as you are doing the chores.
“Glowing” I think you and demi started something this morning.
Okay, I’ve got thin long pants on and my garden gloves are right here.
I’ll check back in a while.
Take good care, all. Much fondness coming your ways.
Better get some things done myself.
Have a great day everyone!
Actually not “southern” although it may be. I heard it in the Midwest.
We were trying to decide what that saying is about ‘Men sweat, women ….’, it’s glow, we were pretty sure.
I am just Grandma Molly to them. They are cute, bright kids. I was accepted right away because they have no relationship with their other grandmother, although Dana’s father’s wife is a good grandma. One can’t have too many grandmas.
Whatever we call it, I’m officially there. 2 dozen matters, several zooks and several cucmber. Pulled lots of weeds. I admit, I haven’t kept up. When it’s hot and sticky, it doesn’t take much effort to get glowing. Let’s put it this way, I came in for a break because my glasses were fogging up.

Sorry, iPad copy/paste sucks.
Hey, hey! Om is back! *waves*
I didn’t realize Christy was still blogging. Sometimes I wonder how she’s doing.
She usually posts about once a day. Home, recipes, her schoolteacher stuff, the Peanut. Always enjoyable.
Is she herself teaching now? I did not know that. She really added alot here, and I’ve missed her often.
Just back for a quick washup. When I looked at your sign off, I could have sworn it said: Never. Grow. Up. I liked it.
Hi, YSD!! Saw your kitteh photos yesterday. I am still desperately in love with Abner….
You lot (instead of a Romneyism, that can be my Omneyism) have been stocking us up on mugs while I’ve been away. Just look at this one:
Practice Safe Lunch – Use Condiments AppleCanyon2! Did you sneak this one out of the school cafeteria?
Found this indirectly, through Christy’s blog via msmolly’s comment.
Arabian Waltz
Have a great afternoon, pupses. See you later, I hope :)
Omi!
Lurking is not working.
If people enjoy the conversations here, they should engage.
It’s only quiet if fewer people show up.
Glad to see you are back.
Have got All the ingredients for several large batches of pasta sauce…
So, am turning the box fan in the dining room towards the kitchen and starting to chope, fry, etc., then I’ll put it all in the slow cooker.
Then freeze for later. Got more stuff coming.
I should prolly put on some rock and roll, babies.
Starting with Carry On, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
Lost my link thingie.
In about a half hour, you’ll be able to Smell it.
The Diner is essential reading. I am never around early because I live on the West Coast but always read later. Some very important – and fun – ideas here.
Not saying people shouldn’t Lurk. I may have misspoke. But, if people want to be part of a dialogue and are concerned about the lower level of comments, just say hi, it would be so appreciated to hear others’ voices.
Bet most of the ingredients are from your garden. It’s gonna be great!
Just on my way out for veggies for roasting. For some reason I’m in the mood for root vegetables……fall must be in the air. It was, yesterday, but hot again today.
Red onions, small potatoes, carrots for the roots. Maybe okra and brussels sprouts for the green. Toss with a little olive oil and salt and pepper then pop them in the oven. Yum.
Sounds really good.
A couple of weeks ago, I smelled (smelt?) Autumn in the air, and now I’m living with 110 and humid. But, it got me out of the house early didn’t it.
It’s gonna be good, and I’m going to Freeze it. I’ve put a lot of hours into that garden and I’m going to Reap.
Olive Oil to you. I love it.
See ya later.
Hi Twain :)
Don’t ever hesitate to just announce yourself if you you drop by in the afternoon. Never can tell who else is having a piece of pie or working on the puzzle in the corner booth. Probably oldnslow :)
Oh, gosh, the heat’s getting to me.
Not lower “level” of comments. Lower “quantity” of comments.
I love all the comments here. High Class, all the way.
Hello all. I’ll be back in the conversation tomorrow. We’ve been on the West Coast, and the time zone isn’t convenient for participating in the Diner. Back in Canadaland today, where you don’t have to get x-rayed or felt up to board a plane. Hate tobreak it to you all, but the US is looking more andmore like tne old USSR, where they used to do ID checks at the escalators in the Moscow subway. Very sad. When my mother doies we won’t be going back.
Lotsa Sad going around, in my experience, and from what I hear.
It’s hard, challenging, heart wrenching to watch a beloved parent go…
Best to you, Knut, and know that you are not alone.
A little late in saying this, but I don’t find it very challenging to find the Diner on this site, even later in the day.
Either scroll down through the threads, you might have to click Previous Entries, or go to myfdl, find SouthernDragon, click.
Bam.
Boom.
There it is.
Just trying to helpful.
You won’t find the Diner through the MyFDL link, only Caturday and the Marx in the Morning posts.
Speaking of which, I’ll put out a feeler in the morning to see who wants to engage in Wolff’s Marxisn Class Analysis course.
Video of John Unger and Schoep.
Such love and devotion. Some sad times up ahead.
Ooooh, oohhh! Me! Me me me!
Yep, me, too.
Yeah, that’s gonna be a hard one. Hope he’s got lots of support.
Oh, sure I will. If I go to Find People and put your name in, I will find your comments, and thus, the Diner.
Or, people can leave the Diner up in another window and just update it.
There’s more than one way to skin a….oops, never mind.
*starts to laugh then hastily claps hand over own mouth*
Sorry. I realized where I was going and then put on the brakes.
Go, ahead, ask me how the sauce smells.
Heh, heh. I even went to big lots and bought 4 64 oz. freezer containers, for 2 bucks. Ummm hummm.
But, then this afternoon when I checked out the garden again, there’s more red ones. Wouldn’t ya figure the time when Sonny’s gone is when everything is going Boom, bam, bazoink.
I’ve got to get out there and pull his cayenne peppers that have turned red.
It’s All Turning Red!
PS Actually, a good friend just told me I could leave them on for a while.
Good, ’cause I’m not going back out there today. It’s just that hot.
((Omi))
Your sauce smells heavenly.
Wish I could send you some cooler temps. It is only 67 degrees here right now. That is shockingly cool for this time of year.
Wow, almost pecan pie weather. And, Pumpkins and hot cider.
It’s about 108 on the front porch right now.
Thanks for that fantasy moment. Have a great rest of your evening.
:)
Youse guys are pretty funny, Om and Demi. Apple Cider and pumpkin pie. Ooh, I wish. Time-traveling to a New England autumn at an apple orchard with a cider press…
