For years conservatives have been bemoaning that classic “liberal” piece of legislation intruding on their lives, Title IX, as a soul-sucking piece of legislation that harms American sporting culture and society.
Sports columnist Furman Bisher of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution expressed much of the conventional wisdom of the sports page when he wrote, “What are we after, a race of Amazons? Do you want a companion or a broad that chews tobacco? What do you want for the darling daughter, a boudoir or a locker room full of cussing and bruises? A mother for your grandchildren or a hysterectomy?”
That was stupid then, but stupid always sells for a while. Forty years on, the evidence is in and as always — “thank goodness we passed this blessed piece of socialism”, it’s golden.
As of this moment the United States has won 39 gold medals — and women account for 25 of them. From shooter Kim Rhode to track’s Allyson Felix to soccer’s Alex Morgan; from gymnast Gabby Douglas to water polo player Maggie Stevens America’s women are dominating — thank goodness the men get to count dolphin hybrid Michael Phelps.
Particularly noteworthy is the dominance of women’s team sports, sports that gained ground especially because of Title IX. The women’s basketball team, unlike the “dream team” of NBA stars has not lost an Olympic game in forever; the women’s soccer team has played in the gold-medal game every time it has been played and won the last 3 gold medals; the women’s water polo team won it’s first gold after being silver medalists the last two Olympics.

And the Spice Girls are going to wrap it up at the Closing Ceremonies on Sunday. Looking forward to that.
What I would not be
What I would not want is for anyone’s “darling daughter” to end up with a misogynistic asswipe like Furman Bisher for a husband.
I think the article misses the real point of Title 9 legislation. It isn’t about gold medals or other ego massaging false national pride. It is about equality of opportunity in all things.
The men can also count swimmer and gold medal winner Ryan Lochte, who likes to pee in the pool.
Cue the Lee Greenwood and Alisyn Camerota. USA! USA!
Of course it is. The post is meant to be pithy, topical, somewhat tongue-in-cheek and most importantly not very long while pointing out one of the many benefits of such equality of opportunity.
A number of sports programs for men were terminated because of title ix. No new money was provided, so rather than have a womens team in whatever the universities simply ended the mens team in whatever.
On the balance, we’re better of with IX. But it wasn’t perfect and it did hurt some people.
Boxturtle (sometimes, the government must provide funding to implement a given program)
Yes. Which is why the GOPers hate it so.
It still bothers me that we must legislate something that anybody with a functioning heart and brain can see will do good.
Boxturtle (Anybody know if there’s a “religious” exception to IX?)
Good morning, pups. We have Mr. Cohen and Mr. Coates today, since Bobo and Prof. Krugman are off. In “Britain’s Olympic Whiplash” Mr. Cohen says they’ve gone from the land of gloom to the land of glee — with Bolt-like speed. Mr. Coates looks at “Romney’s Side Course of Culture” and says Mitt Romney acts as if culture is a set of irrefutable best practices, when in fact it is more like a toolbox whose efficacy depends upon the job.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, the cold drinks are in the fridge, and I’ve got your favorite omelet for breakfast. This morning should be a bit of a challenge. It’s booster shot day for the kittens, and me wrangling them into carriers ought to look like something out of a slapstick comedy. I’m hoping on snaring them at the breakfast dish. Have a great day.
thanks, attaturk. Another aspect of women’s sports is that athletic scholarships have given a lot of people a chance to get an education they never would have been able to get before, and Title !X brought that to women who had never had it before. While professional sports has made something of a mess of it, those athletic scholarships are a very big chance for folks who could work toward excellence in a sport, and get to make a life out of it too.
Thanks, Marion, Mitt/culture is a joke. How can anyone see beyond the smokescreen of his high spending life into any actual development of values. Mitt obviously thinks he can buy the one that’s on the top today, get it up on his bigscreen straight from his advisors, and exchange for the other tomorrow.
Fixed it for ya!
Boxturtle (My idea of culture is probably closer to Al Bundy)
Ryan Lochte — good will ambassador for our country, peeing in the commons. No wonder America can’t have good things. Guy must be a Republican.
That linked article was interesting…and shocking in part: women athletes are [still] asked if it’s hard for them to control their emotions? I guess I don’t watch enough sports – or sports interviews – I had no idea women athletes were ever asked such a question. Utterly amazing.
In fact, back when Title IX passed, I don’t remember anyone arguing that women were too emotoinal for sports. That argument was sure used for politics – too emotional to have control of the atomic button, for instance, but sports? Where men feel able to cry upon winning a big game/fight/match? Gimme a break.
And re the last part, about men coaches….the conclusion should be much broader; it applies to all professions:
There, fixed.
Bet he has a booger collection on his bathroom mirror too.
My wife was a Title IX baby and got a full ride scholarhsip in field hockey. She benefits to this day from that opportunity, both in her education and in poise. In the business world, she is not afraid to mix it up with the guys.
It is absolutely foolish for any American not to be granted equal access to the commons – hence the 13,14,15 and 19 amendments. Talent is so hard to come by, we need to always broaden the pool of opportunity, not narrow it. Who can tell which demographic our next lawgiver, healer or singer will come from?
On a personal note and as a former high school and intra-mural jock, I have quit watching men’s sports at the professional and college level – it is redolent of our I-got-mine-screw-you culture. I watch high school sports and women’s softball, basketball and volleyball because they still know how to play like a team, they way I learned to play the games.
Equality of Opportunity, good. Equal outcomes? Bad.
