Thanks, SD, that white bison is going to do better at predicting weather than the petroleum industry’s pet deniers of climate change, that’s one thing that’s a sure bet.
Good morning SouthernDragon and thank you for the post.
Good morning Ruth.
Alien life?
Good morning – from my refuge from the Heat Dome now in place over my house – here, it’s 74F. There, about 105F.
I would love the climate change deniers to act on their own information, rather than reality the rest of us work with.
Good Morning, SD
One totally side benefit of having the Olympics on, I ended up watching a local news broadcast, which I rarely catch, and I saw a report on the police violence in Anaheim. Nice to see the msm covering stories I usually only hear about here at the Lake.
You People!
300 million without electricity in India.
I was just wondering if that was a virgin birth.
Ruth,
I believe that the last white bison born was in Janesville, Wisconsin and many of the tribes arrived after the birth and honored the bison with the same ceremonials.
Janesville, Wisconsin is home to Paul Ryan. I wonder if we could get the tribes to fashion a ceremonial that would remove him from office?
Aleppo being cleared out of foreign fighters.
When the canon is established, it will possibly have involved hand reaching from the clouds and delivering baby.
If only.
Morning Diners!
Hey, SD. In honor of Isreal’s selection for President of the US and how the World Turns I’d like to order up the Repub special for breakfast.
I’ll a bunch of egg(heads) scrambled vigoursly.
A mango and mixed fruit salad topped with crazy nuts.
Place that salad on a platform of cottage cheese.
Hold all bacon.
Add a platter full of thick headed Texas toasteds smothered in butter substitute.
Mmm-K?
Oh, yeah. Don’t even think about charging over $20.00 cause our country is in the scarey Deficit zone!
Even Koch funded scientists are coming around to human caused global warming.
Mornin’, pups
But, you know, don’t get me wrong. I think it’s a wonderful event and I encourage happy ceremonies.
Finally! However, it’s too late according to scientists to make a difference in the near term.
In other nonnews, NBC olympic coverage is of men’s sports and women wearing scanty clothes.
You’re not going to Waffle on that are you?
Heck! I forgot about the waffles! Thanks for reminding me.
SD,
Add on a stack of waffles shaped in Looney Toon characters!
Hey, I only watch Womens Beach Volleyball for the articles.
Good morning all. Thanks for the post and host SoDrag.
Ah, I see you And Ruth are on a roll today.
Better a white bison than a black swan.
Whole wheat, with real honey mustard. Serve hot.
No one could have predicted!
That menu sounds like what NBC is serving up for their Olympic coverage!
Good morning, pups.
I think I have a tree infested with Emerald Ash Borer. I knew it was dying and would have to come down, but this adds a new dimension.
I’m sorry to hear that. Guess finding a natural enemy to keep it in check is as hopeless as expecting a white bison, hmm?
You mean before the election ?
Morning Diners. The coverage by NBC is nothing more than a platform for promoting American “exceptionalism”. The U.S. corporate media can’t pass up a propaganda opportunity afforded by the Olympics.
Gold rush in Greenland. No wonder they had to melt all the snow.
Gah, it’s always something isn’t it? That’ll cost you some money to have taken out. Do you have more than one of the same kind of tree?
I haz waffle I make from scratch with whole wheat and buck wheat flower. I put blackberry all fruit spread on it.
Good..ummmm.
Good morning, pupses, and thank you, SD.
Do those Emerald Ash Borers move north with warming climate, like the Southern Pine Borers?
ROTFLMButtOff!
Yeah, always before the election.
I find NBC’s Olympics coverage unwatchable, so I haven’t watched.
Ruh-Roh! Greenland is in trouble! They better watch out for
US!
Yes, EAB is killing off the ash trees in the Midwest, and if the tree gets very far along in it, no treatment will help. There has been a big “don’t move firewood” campaign for almost 10 years since EAB was discovered in Michigan in 2002.
I think the removed tree has to be specially handled. I am going to try to find one of the actual borers and report it to the DNR before I have the tree taken down, but some of the symptoms my tree shows are “classic” for EAB.
Sorry, this is pretty off topic, even for the Diner.
Sounds like fare for healthy family breakfast, need to put on menu here. and yes, yum. Been picking fresh raspberries here.
My home state of Michigan has the worst infestation, but they’re slowly moving south.
If anyone finds a Diner that stays on topic, smush it quick before it kills off free association.
I don’t know, Demi. I have lots of different trees, and this is the only one that is obviously dying, and I don’t see any other Ash trees near me. It is very tall, so it may have been here for 20 years and is nearly bare at the top.
1) I can remember when the NYT was considered the “paper of record”. Between their political butt-kissing, their general incompenence, and their unwillingness to control some of the politicians pet reporters they’ve become the Podunk Times. And they’re getting worse.
2) In a real court, Manning’s charges would have been already dismissed, officals involved in his treatment would have resigned and the prosecutor might well have been disbarred. I doubt THIS judge will do anything but say “Too Bad”.
3) Assad is not going to surrender. And he’s not going to get beaten without foreign troops and air forces. And despite Russia’s public grumpiness toward Assad, they’re going to back the person who allows them their ONLY foreign base and loyaly buys their military exports.
4) That climate research is going to hurt. The denyiers have put a lot of effort into building up that particular skeptic and now they’re going to have to tear him down personally since his data is solid. He was the most respected of the skeptics.
5) I will not live in a concrete jungle. No matter how much you tell me it’s more efficient, there are so many negatives to city living. I like to see nature, not pavement. And I don’t like to see traffic enfgorcement cameras.
Boxturtle (The Kochs must be scrambling, now that their pet scientist has betrayed them)
It’s entirely possible that North America will lose the entire population of ash tree because of the EAB that came into Detroit from China in crates that were not adequately inspected. Pesky regulations!/s
I was horrified during the Parade of Nations by the commentary. The bits of info they used to describe the countries was selected to be wise-ass and (probably) “colorful” but in actuality it was quite demeaning.
Does anyone here remember American Elm trees?
Probably. A lot depends on how long it’s been cooking. I agree with the author, with this new data that moon just jumped to the front of the explore line.
Boxturtle (If they start now, I just might know the answer in my lifetime)
Watched that Stephany Griffith-Jones interview yesterday. I hate to say that her “optimism of the heart” is naive, but I don’t see big business turning on big banks, or new regulations doing much to curb the power of finance.
I really like having the 15-20 minute stories that TRNN produces. I’m doing a knitting project and it is great to be able to listen to the interviews. I’m working through a backlog now.
Southern pine bore.
I don’t know if their movement is climate related. They can be transported (or their larvae can) in cut firewood, and there has been a big quarantine for several years.
I only discovered what this was when I was researching the cause of some strange growths on an ash tree in my daughter’s front yard. Her tree doesn’t have EAB, it has a different infestation — Ash Flower Galls — looks like broccoli hanging off the branches, but isn’t fatal for the tree. I knew my tree was dying but had no idea why until I came across photos and description of EAB.
I was horrified at the Queen while the children were singing to her. I think she lost all pride in the country and disappointed many more than myself.
I do! Still have a few on the property.
I do…but from back in the 70s.
OH LOLOL. I just clicked on the link expecting to see an insect. Well, I guess I did see an insect.
*g*
grins and giggles?
oops
Morning SD & Pupses:
Hedges is up.
Does anyone here remember the American Chestnut?
The one at my childhood home was cut down last year before the drought ended its last gasp.
They’re back.
There are some in remote places here in NW PA. (I am here to escape the heat dome in N.TX., for those who aren’t sure where it is I’m writing from right now.)
I’d love to hear Richard Wolff and Gar Alperovitz do a show together and talk about cooperatives like Mondragon and the Cleveland Model.
Having computer problems so I’m going to hop off here for a while.
Have a good day, pupses, and thanks as always, SD.
I think he also neglects to mention that nearly all but a few smaller colleges have become nothing more that glorified diploma mills. The possessors of which can only look forward to a lifetime of back breaking debt.
I second that emotion.
It seems to be something going around. Sorry for your problems.
Take good care, Om.
You can buy them at nurseries. They’ve bred them to be immune to the disease.
I suppose remarks about NSA being hard at work aren’t really funny, are they?
Chestnuts roasting……Mother, as sure as there is a X in Christmas, you can be sure those are Tiny Tim Chestnuts.
The American Chestnut Foundation is working diligently to bring the tree back.
http://www.acf.org/PressReleases.php
You’re new here! Welcome to the Diner (and FDL). Dive right in, the water’s fine.
Glad to hear it.
Pureed chestnuts are delicious.
Chestnuts from American chestnut tree are not edible.
What do you expect? That’s high tech stuff.
Actually American Chestnuts (Castanea dentata) are edible. Horse Chestnuts (Aesculus glabra), aka Ohio Buckeye are poisonous.
And the oldest tree at Kew Royal Gardens is a chestnut.
http://my.firedoglake.com/ruthcalvo/2011/12/25/food-sunday-chestnuts/
Aha. My mistake.
Good morning firedogs! Thanks for the post and host SD.
Hey, ya, Kris.
Got any good chestnut jokes?
Kew is a must see for anyone traveling to London/GB.
Hi, was looking for chicken friend steak post Sunday, did something get befuddled?
Amazing what one learns here, innit?
Absolutely. Though I was there in fall, and found out that trees don’t turn bright colors like we’re used to, even natives talk about ‘turning brown’ which they do.
Indeed. I went online late last night to check comments and realized it was scheduled to publish on July 30th. Yesterday was not July 30th.

oooops. next Sunday is a good one for steaks, I am sure! (This from me, who scheduled a Pull Up a Chair post for Friday once upon a thyme.)
Saw Hughie yesterday and he could not stop talking about your brisket.
I rescheduled it last night. Now I’ll just have to remember it’s there so I can follow comments.
He loves my meat.
Good. I’ll look forward to it (agin).
Dena the bookkeeper at work reports this morning that they got 1st in chicken this weekend at a BBQ Cookoff on a finishing tip I gave her on Friday. 1st in brisket and 6th in ribs got them Master Chef. She also got 1st in dessert. She is very happy about the chicken because they had never placed before.
Wych Elm, Black Alder, Hornbeam, Birch, Yew…. I love the names.
Białowieża Forest – Remarkable Remnant of Europe’s Primeval Past
Damn. We should’ve gone out there. What’d you tell her to do for the chicken?
And your cut was … high on the hog?
Smoker only until the meat is cooked then move it to the Weber to finish the skin.
Ruth,
No cut for me (other than leftovers she brought in) but they got $975.00!
You are a good friend.
Time to get stuff done, like go enter cookoffs with secrets from friends. Okay, not really. Thanks for the good company.
Naw, just a mediocre pit master.
Good tip. Crispy chicken skin is one of the 8 wonders of the food world.
Okay. The dipshit doing color commentary for Men’s Volleyball on MSNBC right now just compared Dirk Nowitzki to Gandhi.
NBC is so fucking bad it hurts.
You guys have tips that can get someone placed at a cook off? I’m very impressed.
So, do you have a basic technique for, say, ribs?
How are you cooking ‘em, YSD? And what kind of ribs? Beef ribs, baby backs, spare ribs?
Pork spareribs. But to be honest, I’ve been politely requested to put down the tongs and back away from the Webber slowly. Mr does all the outdoor cooking and he got his skillz from his dad. He seasons them and puts them on the BBQ for about 45 minutes, basting with sauce at the end.
Pork is a meat that better lends itself to slow cooking. If you’re going to grill ribs, cook them at a low temp (275-ish) in the oven for about an hour, in a pan covered with foil to trap in the moisture of your preferred liquid. (I’d go with a mixture of apple juice, water, and a touch of white vinegar) Only a few ounces of moisture needed to keep the ribs moist.
Finish on the grill for about 5-7 minutes a side with sauce at the end. Chars the outside and caramelizes the sugars.
Cooking them the entire time on the grill will leave them tough, typically.
Yeah, I’ve heard of a boiling technique prior to the grilling part, but I’ve not heard about steaming with a flavored liquid. Now that I’m thinking about it, it makes sense. I’ve done pork butt in the oven and used a “mop” with vinegar and spices. Hmm.
As Om said earlier, we get educated about a lot here.

I was sufficiently inspired by the end of last week’s chicken fried steak conversation to fry some chicken this past weekend. But, not the traditional way, quite exactly.
I found a good deal on 4 skinless boneless breasts at fresh and easy(oldnslow, smiling in your direction) and first, after wrapping 2 for freezing, I rinsed them and then slow microwaved them, kinda like a parboiled, then cut them into three pieces each. Then I put a small amount of olive oil into the frying pan, dipped the chicken pieces into flour, salt and pepper. Then slowish fried them. Had corn on the cob and mashed potatoes. Gave the same Comfort Foody feel of Real Fried Chicken, but without some of the bad stuff.
Just a thought. An experiment that worked out well here.
PS there was the smell of flour-dipped fried chicken that each and every time takes me back to my daddy’s mother’s Sunday Fried Chicken.
Oldnslow, if you, and any one of your other lovelies (especially the GirlWithTheDragonCakes), are/am/be reading, I realize that my last comment may have been vague, not specific.
I said:
and, this might have caused some confusion, which I regret and apologize for.
For some unremembered reason, crispy chicken and turkey skin were called Chicky Noodle and Turkey Noodle in our family. Damn, I wish I could remember how that came to be, but it is lost in the mists of time…..
..the mists of time.
That’s beautiful. (not unlike the fog of war.)
Are you good? Whatcha doin’?
Fair to Middlin. Or Muddlin :)
How bout you?
That chicken sounds good. I do that with fish, too, not really fry. A small fillet dredged in a little flour and then just lightly browned in a small bit of butter. This is making me hungry.
Got to run. Errands, then run through the tai chi forms before class tonight. I always promise myself I will do them every day, then I don’t do them until just before class….no discipline.
Have a good afternoon and I’ll see you later.
I hear ya about the way we’re cooking our stuff. I guess that’s kind of a double you know what.
I’m heading out to buy my sonny four new bed pillows and pillow cases.
Last week I guided/assisted/pushed him through English (on one day) and Math (on another day) assessment tests for college. He met with a counselor And, I made him do an archeological dig on his room. Wanted the begining of college to be a clean slate. He did a wonderful job and he’s going to shampoo the carpet while I clean the walls, doors, trimming, you know. It’s a good indoor job to do with the heat outside.
But, don’t you think all new pillows and cases is a fun reward?
Oops… see ya later.
