Hey there, AC2. I guess that you are lucky that your people comply with the ban. Private firework displays have been banned here for a long time, but that doesn’t stop some. Maybe some people think rules are made to be broken. There are plenty of firework displays at parks and colleges so that people don’t have to endanger their communities.
Actually, because we live Up Hill, there is a place we can walk to and see about 20 different displays, from a nice safe distance. :)
Best fireworks I ever saw. Venue is Staten Island Yankees (feeder team) stadium. On north shore with full view of lower Manhattan. NY pops. First performance of Handel’s Fireworks since original in 1749 with live fireworks. The actual display was not as grandiose as Macy’s Manhattan ones, but were perfectly timed with the music. Fireworks were launched from barges sitting in the water. Thrilling.
It was earlier in the program that Mayor Guiliani conducted Anvil chorus. Stiff as a board and a hoot & a half. Wonderful evening.

Was at Kris’s house at 3:30 this morning to start the smoker. 2 12 lb briskets went on at 4:00. Pork ribs have been going since 7:00 last night at another location. I started a pot of charro beans and potato salad at 5:30 this morning. We have a 5 lb pork loin that will go on the smoker at 11:00 and 5 lbs of fresh local sausage about 2 hrs after that.
So, how’s it with y’all?
Lots of fireworks on the beach last night and some kids started a fire with a luminary that came down on shore rather than in the water.

Enjoyed your fireworks story. I had a similar experience on the San Francisco bay aboard a 50 ft sail boat. We were only about a 1/2 mile from the barge that was shooting the fireworks. Local radio, broadcasting Pink Floyd, was perfectly timed to the show. The best I ever saw.
Best fireworks in recent memory were in Cincinnati, OH. They fire them off from a barge on the Ohio River (so not much fire hazard). A local radio station simulcasts appropriate music (not Handel though). Local teevee stations broadcast the fireworks display with the music so those who don’t want to brave the downtown crowds can watch from their air-conditioned bug-free living rooms. (But that would take some of the fun away.)
Absolutely. And, it’s the one night of the year I feel comfortable walking around with a beer. :)

In my case, my symptoms could have been explained by something annoying or something deadly and my doc wasn’t comfortable letting me wait. In fact she took the decision of when to schedule the procedure out of my hands altogether and scheduled it for me. It turns out I have the annoying disease, (diverticulosis), not the deadly one, (colo-rectal cancer). Got my fingers crossed for oldnslow!

My son-in-law has diverticulosis, and there are a few foods he’s supposed to avoid, like corn. An old friend also had it and it flared up periodically and was uncomfortable but not life threatening. I’m happy that’s “all” it was.

My 16 y/o grandson is learning a good life lesson this summer. He has an internship (paid!) that a college friend of my son’s arranged with his company. Yeah, and making more than minimum wage! He is a very bright kid (3rd in his class of 900+) but hasn’t had any programming, and this is a software company. He’s learning basic programming principles using a language called Python, doing simple stuff like reading info from an Excel file and putting it into something else readable. He’s also sitting in on client meetings, so he’s getting real-world experience.

Even though our apt mgmt put up notices last week that fireworks are never allowed but especially this year with the dry conditions, some idiot on Sunday blew off firecrackers. Monday morning we had notices on our doors, “any fireworks = lease termination.” So no more boomers/crackers to scare my kitty. Happy 4th! Stay cool and hydrated out there!

I eat dinner on back porch, weather permitting. Put plate on arm of Adirondack chair, which means it’s precarious. Upturned whole plate of food once (am more careful now). I picked up the big pieces of food (plate didn’t break!), ants took care of the rest.
Agapanthus, or Lily of the Nile, is a plant that grows very well in this area. And, right about now is when they are all in bloom. They make a great Flower Fireworks centerpiece for the Fourth of July.
Even teabagging vets are pissed at him. This blowback might have some legs on it. I don’t care if a candidate hasn’t served but to then disparage somebody else’ service is beyond the pale. I can’t imagine why anyone would vote for a deadbeat dad in the first place but this might just give them a reason not to, even if being a deadbeat where his own kids are concerned isn’t.

Just in from outside chores this morning. No AC here, but I have the house set up for natural convection cooling, an open upstairs window gently drawing cooler air from the cellar, close to 20 degrees difference from outside temps.

For Mrs. Tiger and me, it will be grilled chicken, potato(e) salad, and sweet corn, with an all-American beverage selection: California wine and Michigan microbrews. With any luck, we’ll completely forget how badly the Tigers are playing this season.
I bought a little rosemary “tree” at the local garden center — it’s about 15″ tall — and put it on my deck rail, where it blew off in last Friday’s storms. Since one of its little branches broke off in the fall, I was required to go to the Farmer’s Market and purchase a free-range chicken so I can make Rosemary-Garlic Roasted Chicken for today’s feast. I always do it on my Weber charcoal grill.
Funny how things happen, innit?
Wonder what we would have to break to get one of CBL’s cakes….
That chicken recipe looks wonderful. The simplest, freshest ingredients make the most delicious and satisfying meals.
I would like to get some fresh scallops, dust them lightly in flour, then pan sear them in a little butter to lightly golden brown. Just a small squeeze of lemon and oh, my.

Y’all making me so hungry. We usually do a Boston Butt with all the trimmings but it’s been too darned hot to stand at the grill for hours. I just put together a nice fruit salad this morning with fresh local peaches. Think we will grill a piece of meat this evening after it cools down some.

The humidity is on us now which makes it feel like 150 outside. Woke up this morning and the windows had condensation from the humidity outside.
LOL! Yeah, the butter and lemon juice are excellent, but when you pour that reduced wine sauce over them too your toes will smile!

Well, by now prolly everybody’s gone, maybe even chowing down. I slept late, in spite of resolutions to get up early enough to not waste the day.
Can smell charcoal grill from somewhere in the neighborhood – sitting on the patio, kitties relaxed on the Saltillo tile. Semi-cloudy, breeze, not too hot…thunderstorms actually predicted for later–who knows.
Debating grilling chicken and corn – would be the second use for my mini-Weber. The first time, with hot dogs and corn, turned out surprisingly well. The only question is am I too lazy to get my butt moving and do it.
If I weren’t so lazy, I’d for sure accept Kris/oldnsnlow’s invitation: only about two hours northeast of me. *g* Something tells me that in a small town the smell and the parked cars would lead me right to his place, no address needed.
Of course, it being Texas, it could be that nearly every house will look much the same…smoker going, lotsa people milling about, cars and trucks parked every which way out front and in the alley. Sure sounds delicious!
I have some Texas peaches, too, which I’ve been wanting to try grilling, although these are flavorful and juicy, they’re quite small. Wouldn’t want ‘em to fall through the grill rack.
It’s a lovely day, and I have a stack of good books from the library, escapist fictioin, history, and some classic fiction, too. What shall I do?

There’s a great fresh fish vendor in our Farmer’s Market, and I’ve become a weekly customer. In addition to salmon, I often buy whatever new and unusual items he has on offer. Last Saturday it was a variety of sea bass. I’ve also bought “dry pack” scallops and they’re truly yummy, and you can do them on the grill. He can usually tell me how he likes to prepare whatever I’ve bought.
I found the Rosemary & Garlic chicken recipe in Cooking Light magazine’s “best of” issue several years ago and have been making it ever since. Cooked on the grill, it seems to need no seasoning other than the rosemary and garlic. I just couldn’t let that broken piece of rosemary go to waste, even though I’ve had chicken a couple of times already this week.
OK back to the sewing machine (in my nice cool basement). It had hit 102º here, but backed off to 100º now.
Cooking Light has some very good recipes, IMO. Sadly, when I read them, I invariably add full fat modifications in my imagination. *sigh*

A ribeye — very rare — is definitely my “thing” but I’ve all but stopped eating red meat.
After eating some of the above-mentioned chicken, I’ve decided that free-range chicken from the vendor in the Farmer’s Market and a chicken from the supermarket aren’t even the same species!
