Good morning, pups. Today we’ve got Keller and Krugman. Mr. Keller says we should all just STFU and comply when someone says “Show Me Your Papers,” and that Americans should get over their anxieties about a national identification card. Prof. Krugman addresses “Europe’s Great Delusion” and says one scenario says that European leaders will, in the end, do whatever it takes to prevent disaster. But that’s been said before.

I learned that the Boston Tea Party resembled in many ways the growing modern-day protests against transnational corporations and small-town efforts to protect themselves from chain-store retailers or factory farms. The Tea Party’s participants thought of themselves as protesters against the actions of the multinational East India Company.

Although schoolchildren are usually taught that the American Revolution was a rebellion against “taxation without representation,” akin to modern day conservative taxpayer revolts, in fact what led to the revolution was rage against a transnational corporation that, by the 1760s, dominated trade from China to India to the Caribbean, and controlled nearly all commerce to and from North America, with subsidies and special dispensation from the British crown.

BTW Congress could have protected the American people at any point form the abuses of state based health insurers, under contractual law. Instead Congress and the courts protected the “monied interests,” because the monied interests own Congress, as Jefferson and Madison both feared. Congress protected the slaveholders, America. As I recall it was not Rep. John Lewis, who was using billy clubs, German Shepards and water Cannon, to exercise a constitutional right, his right to vote as he had his head cut wide open exercising his right to free speech and to assemble, protesting state sponsored discrimination, denying him his right to vote?????

Krugman begins today with some 1910 writing by one Norman Angell on the new obsolescence of war. I tracked down where I’d recently seen the same lumberjack breakfast of words quoted and came up with Liaquat Ahamed’s Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World. Anyone wanting a very readable, if sickening, account of just how much largely pointless history we seem determined even more pointlessly to repeat will find it here. It’s my summer reading.
