Republicans don’t like a lot of things, a trait for which they’re somewhat famous, but they do like to win. Naturally enough, they also take a very dim view of losing, and that’s what always gets them in trouble. When they lose, a whole passel of latent pathologies drive them to do the nuttiest things, most of which ultimately redound to their detriment, but they simply can’t help themselves.
The last two times they’ve lost the Presidency due to the usual rank incompetence and resulting widespread public revulsion, their reaction has been pretty much the opposite of what a sane person would do in such a situation, but the pattern is quite clear. First, denial: Clinton didn’t really win because he only got 42% of the vote; Obama didn’t really win because, well, ACORN, Socialism, Kenya, and insufficient “vetting.” No reed is too flimsy to cling to; no margin too large to dismiss out of hand.
Then there’s the anger, which is the last stop on their peculiarly truncated progression of grief. This stage starts a little before inauguration, reaches full steam at the first midterm, and continues through reelection, subsequent impeachment, and the devastating midterm to follow that. If they’re lucky, the next stage is “winning” a rigged election, then feverishly undoing whatever accomplishments the demonic “Democrat” usurper has managed to achieve. Rinse and repeat.
Fortunately for them, the media have the memories of fruit flies and the attention spans of toddlers, so they fall for the game (or at least pretend to) every time. Unfortunately, Democratic Presidents are often corrupt and in need of impeachment, but for the wrong reasons. Clinton sold out the country to the big banks, culminating in the recent unpleasantness, and abolished the last vestiges of the welfare state that might have alleviated it. But to right-thinking Americans, those are his good points, so they chose to impeach him for a blow job, of which Republicans are understandably jealous, but still left the electorate notably unimpressed.
Obama has violated the Constitution on multiple occasions with regard to wars, torture, leniency for the banks, and crackdowns on Occupiers and whistleblowers, but since Republicans approve of all those things, they are left with the thin gruel of Eric Holder and something called Fast and Furious. Thus, playing Wile E. Coyote to Obama’s Road Runner, they ordered up a big box of “Contempt of Congress” from ACME, and the explosion that inevitably ensues is just a few minutes away.
It’s tempting to wonder whether Republicans would have more luck with their Church Lady jihads if they were at least scantily justified, but such speculation misses the point. Just as extremism in defense of “liberty” is no vice, moderation, for whatever reason, is no virtue for this crowd. Democrats can do whatever they want, as long as it’s not governing as a, well, Democrat. Beyond that, anything goes.
It’s equally tempting to think of the position Obama would be in had he not capitulated to Republicans at every turn; the economy recovering more rapidly, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove et al on trial rather than on Fox News, a more popular health care reform law, and torturers and banksters glumly awaiting a cake with a file in it. Sadly, he didn’t pursue that path, and he’s left to lie in the bed of his own making, short-sheeted by Darrell Issa.
Call Republicans crazy, and cringe as you will at their tactics, but they do seem to work, win or lose.

Hag!
The lunatic fringe of the Republican Party in my youth is now the mainstream and they keep getting worse.
Yeah, that darky commie is a’comin’ after your guns, and this proves it. Sheesh.
You provoke my fave theme. Humans evolutionarily are alpha males. All they care about is getting to the top of the mountain then fending off all challengers.
Governing is completely & absolutely irrelevant.
The sooner you learn that the more your eyes will be open.
WRT moving the Overton window to the right, it is a logical extension of what I just typed.
Get used to it.
Huh? An entire species of alpha males?
Yep. They’ve stayed underground for many years and have now erupted to the surface like cracked sewer pipes. I keep wondering what they will do next.
Sadly, you’re right. Even when they lose, they end up winning.
Think of the worst, most cynical and self-serving action you can imagine. Nope, sorry, these people are worse than that.
The folks in charge now almost make the Birchers look sane. Of course, given the role of the Kochs in the modern conservative movement, that is not an accident.
Hereabouts, a long series of well-informed front-page posts by a number of eloquent writers deep into the details let America know exactly why — in so many ways — Eric Holder was a very bad choice for Obama’s Attorney General. In a way, this selection previewed all the masquerades collapsing: Candidate Obama’s Outsider image and Change Agent Obama’s Hopiness.
No president who had any intention of going after any aspect of The Establishment would choose Eric Holder as AG.
But to see him pilloried by the GOP for a program “Judge” Michael Mukasey approved and implemented under Bush shows just how bankrupt Issa et al are: they can’t impeach him for terror trials, they can’t hold him in contempt for not going after bankers, they were pleased as punch to see Johnny Edwards tried and probably Roger Clemons, especially since both trials completely fizzled out, and they are happy with Holder’s attitude toward Julian Assange, Bradley Manning, Chiquita Banana, and the Hamilton Project.
In other words, their only objections is that he’s blackety-black. And you can’t really say that from the dais of the Judiciary Committee.
So, yeah, guns.
Please do not be distracted.
Except that they aren’t. That is a baboon model that does not fit hominoid social patterns (humans and the other great apes). It was embraced by conservatives and misogynists as justification for their stupidity and prejudices, but has no scientific grounding.
They are coming after him for enforcing voting rights protections against their efforts at voter suppression.
Your evolutionary characterization of humans would be what?
I read speculations about that earlier today. It does make sense–the Rethugs are clearly, as usual, relying on voter suppression to do what can’t be done with policy or leadership.
It doesn’t help Holder’s case that he’s running a cabinet-level department while black, though…
Yeah. That whole black while in high office sort of starts him out with three strikes in their book.
Of all leaders of all countries in the world in the 20th C, 98% have been males. Let me know when there is evidence to the contrary.
Not arguing about that, but it is not biological and innate (or at least not the only possible outcome based in biological predilections). Evolutionary psychology is pure bullshit.
Explain please & provide evidence.
Thanks.
Crazy, isn’t it? Their particular ideological obsessions obscure the elephant in the room, so they go after the mouse.
Now there are black Leaders for the Southern Baptists & AFSCME … clearly an epidemic that threatens America’s future
Well, the inclusion of blacks in the SBC doesn’t seem to have affected the group’s homophobia, so it could work out.
Something irrelevant to the current thread?
Ain’t that the truth. I spent Father’s Day with my cuckoo-rightie Dad, and he had a whole slickly-produced brochure about how Holder was, well, somebody in the woodpile. Reason enough to hate him, I guess, but I have different, more reality-based reasons.
Let me know when they let Jimmy Carter back in; then I’ll pay attention to what they have to say. Until then, it’s just another group of wannabe Southerners, in their case one that waited until 1995 to denounce slavery. 1995.
You’re the arbiter.
When you think that this Judiciary Committee are the ideological inheritors, except even more radical right, to the group that impeached over a blow job, it’s easy to understand that they want what they cannot have. They want, badly, an Attorney General who’ll start taking away America’s guns. Black is a bonus. Absent that, they’ll simply invent one.
Just think of how those lovely interns must have been eyed late in the afternoon when the 1990s J-Comm members and staffers returned to the office from their hearings. Like bait at a catfish farm, I imagine.
It is entirely conjectural and not based on actual evolutionary evidence for one thing. Secondly, they show no understanding of actual evolutionary principles or mechanisms (for instance they cannot show how selection for particular behaviors would have operated). Thirdly, most of their findings conveniently reinforce existing Western social norms and hierarchies, which are not universal. Finally, many of their “findings” do not correspond to either the biological or cross-cultural evidence.
For instance the whole notion that women are innately monogamous, while men are innately promiscuous. The biological evidence does not support such a difference and indeed supports natural female promiscuity. First, our closest relatives, chimpanzees and bonobos, are characterized by indiscriminate female promiscuity (females in heat mate with all available males). Secondly, the biological evidence for humans also points in that direction. As a general rule in biology, the size of male testes in mammals is determined by the degree of female promiscuity, with larger testicles in more promiscuous species. Human testes are slightly smaller proportionately than those of chimps, but significantly larger than those of harem keeping gorillas. Then there are continuous sexual receptivity in females, concealed ovulation, and female orgasm, all unique to humans and generally believed to exist to promote increased social sexuality.
Yes.
I get to say.
Your “theory” has been dismissed around here before. I understand it’s your Pet, but it is highly offensive to those of us of the male gender who work daily for a fairer world more accommodating of ladies in leadership roles. This is a woman’s blog, with women writers, which activates on women’s issues. Why insult and carry on about the few men who care to hang around, support the enterprise, encourage others to drop by, and promote FDL diligently? Your “theory” is a crackpot scheme concocted to account for your own miserable marriage, lack of ascent in the financial services industry, estranged child, general misandry and lonely life.
Now: how do you like it being on-topic?
I think they are more the inheritors of Joseph McCarthy’s mantle.
I would like to reply in a cogent way but have been ruled out of order.
So will bid you a fond good night.
May I say cocktailhag, are you related to Molly Ivans? You are just a joy to read!
Ah, Larry Flynt, where are you now? (Not that I suspect that anyone has been within a block of Darrell Issa’s whatchamacallit since “Cheers” went off the air…) And then there’s David Vitter. IOKIYAR.
The only nice things I can say about Holder, is that he is not Gonzales or Yoo and he seems to be enforcing civil rights law (at least some of it) for a change.
There’s probably room in the wingnut “soul” for all of the above at once.
I’m even better when I’m sober…. Ol’ Molly is admittedly a model.
The only problem is that they have no souls. They sold them long ago.
Well, Gonzales and Yoo were, for heaven’s sake, Bush appointees. Cynical as I am, I once hoped for better from Obama.
The wingnuts’ souls were meager and stringy to start with, which is why Satan isn’t satisfied corrupting just half of America’s body politic.
Well, I think I’m going to wander off. Peace out, y’all!
Weren’t they the group who swore to convert Hindus from their devil worshiping ?
How’d that work out … *g*
Issa is the best example I’ve ever seen of Twain’s comment that:
He’s the richest Congresscritter of them all, and made his money in the car alarm business after several successful grand theft auto cases against him. Seeing him cry the day his paid-for-by-him Gray Davis recall succeeding, only to realize he was entirely too criminal even for the California GOP — “Sorry Darrell we’re going with Ahnold!” — was a lovely day, but one that sadly did not end his political career.
Holder must have something very big ready to uncork on Issa that is being bottled up by all this F&F silliness. Very big indeed.
I am unfortunately now blocked from commenting on David Vitter’s Facebook status updates, but I have found that I can SHARE them with others, with my commentary atop them and that these SHARES appear in Vitter’s feed. My contributions always involve a question why he’s busying the Senate with whatever hearing or accomplishment he’s trumpeting to his friends, family, and constituents and supporters — when the Senate really needs to devote its precious time to investigating hookers, diapers, and him.
I will admit to having hoped for somewhat better, but I never had much hopes for him. I really had to decide between him and Hillary (the only available choices by our last in the nation primary) who would the least offensive. I did decide that he was slightly less to the right than she was and still do think that overall), but knew it was pretty much going to be Bill Clinton redux.
Take care and sleep well.
“…sadly, he didn’t pursue that path and he’s left to lie in a bed of his own making…”
8 ball in the side pocket…
There really is an element of sodomizing the mutilated corpse of irony about putting the most corrupt sitting congressman in charge of the ethics committee.
The very idea that this race is so close ought to be a searing indictment, but….
Best line evah.
Neither did I… I only thought he was “NEW!” That matters to our dumbed down market, er, electorate. As usual, it was that or the infinitely more heinous Republican, so I went with it, not wanting any more Roberts or Alitos on the bench for 40-odd years.
GOP SOP, really.
Recall Boehner’s misbehavior during his previous ascent in leadership ranks, when he had to be spanked.
For handing out checks.
From the tobacco lobby.
On the House floor.
During a vote on their issue.
Seems rather appropriate to me.
“Hag, it should. It should.
I was glad to see you talking about what might have been. All he had to do was confront them; not even win every time, but just FIGHT. He would have been Captain America.
Now, he’s at serious risk of becoming that poster boy for a failed president. I will not stress over this, nor, send money to try to prevent it. I think it’s too late. This election is going to be about Obama standing on the White House roof, 24-7, trying to keep some rather unpleasant bushCo chickens (the ones he’s been feeding and sheltering…) from coming in for a landing, until after the election.
Well, when a smarmy, washed-up car thief is pawing in your bedding, look in the danged mirror.
Or the prospect of a senile idiot in the White House an inch from death and the prospect of the Thrilla from Wasilla taking over. On that bright note, it is time for me to toddle off. Take care all.
Well, some of us participated in the primary process (before the heinous GOP was even an option) only to see the only Democrat ever to talk nicely about doing something for poor Americans since Bobby Kennedy crash and burn, starved of Establishment media attention to the point where even the most outlandish rumors couldn’t get outside the Enquirer zone.
You know the fix was in against Johnny Edwards when the PTB, and their Legacy Media handmaidens, realized they could end his campaign without resorting to quoting the Enquirer the bebe’ and the woman even Bret Easton Ellis and Jay McInerney steered clear of two decades before.
“No thank you, we’re Americans — anything more complicated than a binary decision confuses us.”
Why do you think RC Cola has never hit it big?
It has a certain clarity, even transparency, that today’s secret, anonymous, backroom blowjobs and bribery lack.
Courage, Drunk Boehner!
I don’t really think Roberts is gonna last ten years, let alone 50. His mini-strokes, likely poppers-induced, are gonna catch up to him soon. Especially if he continues to summer on the Vineyard. Without his “wife” alongside, as in olden days.
It was so infuriating watching this all unfold, and it remains so. In early 2009, so many cherished Republican beliefs lay in tatters, but he chose to stitch them back together rather than toss them out with appropriate force. Emboldening one’s enemies while alienating one’s friends might play with Tom Friedman (if you’re a Democrat), but other than that, it’s one of the two: evil, or stupid. Your decide.
We can only hope that he continues his secret not so secret ways.
So most of us proggies are pretty hep to this, why do you feel the need to repeat the obvious?
Is there anything in yer bag to condemn the Dem’s, being as full bought and owned and operated by big moneyed interests?
Wall Street, Bankers, Financials, Healthcare, PhArma, n more.
Who cares about the same o same o GOP v DIM spy v spy shit?
They are all owned and bought.
Do you have something, um, more progressive? That we DON’T know?
I’d love to hear it.
DO you have plans or thots on how to CHANGE the present fully owned and operated life we live, under the corporate fascist 1%?
Cuz if ya do, I’d be delighted to hear about it.
In the meantime, I’m gonna snooze . . . cuz that’s pretty much where this folly of ours has left me . . . I’m bored with the same old same old.
Tell me something I don’t know.
Please.
Ya think? He looks disturbingly hale and hearty (not in a good way) to me.
I wish I could.
He has that “pretend I am happy” face on. The kind you have to wear if you are living several lies at once.
good stuff, as always, hag. well, i haven’t see all your stuff……. but i’m asumin’
Oh, oh, oh, pick me!! Pick me! I know the answer!!!
BOTH
Evil and stupid are not mutually exclusive. Example One: Doug Feith, et al. See also: Paulie Wolfowitz, Judy Miller.
And when he was up for confirmation, he even had cute little moppet kids handy, though he was 50. Faux innocence is this crowd’s favorite schtick.
And I trust your judgement, since I’m a liberal much in favor of both beer and farting.
Yup
Sad to say, I think they are. It takes a lot of evil (and balls) to pretend to be stupid, but I really think it’s an act. (OK, maybe not Doug Feith, but still…)
Because da hag write pretty — and not only some day, but today.
Moppet kiddies out of a test tube in Brazil.
I enjoy cocktails. well, in my drinking days. then, i enjoyed most anything then. hags I have no particular fondness of.
Did you know we were once mentioned in the same article
http://www.tnr.com/article/politics/pajamas-government?page=0,1
Great chat, but I must run. So nice to be aboard with yer fonts, ‘hag.
I have a nagging Grand Unified Theory of Asset Seizure post that’s working its way out of my fevered brain and won’t leave me alone!
Must.
Go.
Craft.
Tune in Sunday night.
Well, I had no idea. It seems to me that it’s our, well, unusual names that elicit such haughty dismissal. Certainly not the content.
Nice post you and Teddy on your games, Big fun nite all.
What I can’t figure out, is Obama that dumb to have created the bed he must now sleep in, or is he a genius and it remains to be seen why.
omg that is so very funny — making fun of people’s internet handles!
what is this, 1997?
“Evil or stupid…”
Yep. And it’s worth noting that there was a lively…debate…about whether Bush and his “Mayberry Machiavellis” were so dumb they could screw up an anvil, or did they plan all their bloody mayhem and the fallout from it?
Considering the wrench to the right that they gave america, and really, the world (and which Obama has so generously sustained…and even enhanced…) I’d go with .25 stupid and .75 evil, for the republicans, and
probably reverse that, for Obama…with the caveat that squandering the opportunity he had and re-empowering the GOP, whatever the reason, is about 100% evil.
I thought your idea was worth discussing. I disagree with it, but that’s irrelevant because it appears to be unavailable for discussion. The following .PDF might provide you a different way of thinking about human nature.
