For years Egypt had a notorious law that allowed the government to round up and imprison dissidents…or potential dissidents…on a whim. The law had been in place for thirty years, passed in the wake of the Sadat Assassination.
It was an important demand of the protestors against Mubarak that this law be gotten rid of. After Mubarak’s downfall that finally happened on May 31, 2012.
And for almost an entire week…four whole days.
The Egyptian government announced Wednesday that military police and intelligence officers have been given the right to detain civilians, a move that appears to reflect concern about the prospect of mass protests linked to the upcoming presidential election…
…The decree was dated June 4, meaning it was issued just four days after the expiration of Egypt’s infamous emergency law

We decry the guillotine, but the French knew enough not to let the rich and powerful hang around, and here we hounded the Tories out of town.
I thought Atta would be all over Chuck Grassley’s temper tantrum
Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) late Tuesday demanded that the Senate vote again on the confirmation of Andrew Hurwitz to be a U.S. Circuit Judge for the 9th Circuit, and said he was not aware that Senate Democrats were planning to ask for a speedy voice vote on the nomination.
Grassley spoke a few hours after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) asked that all debate time be yielded back, and that Hurwitz be approved by unanimous consent. No objection was raised, and Hurwitz was quickly approved by voice vote.
A furious Grassley spoke just before 6 p.m., and said he was not told that this might occur, that he had intended to speak more on the nomination, and that he wanted a roll call vote.
“All the business of the Senate is based upon trust between one senator and another,” Grassley said on the Senate floor. “When the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee isn’t notified of this action or any other senator notified of this action, it seems to me that that trust has been violated.
“And I won’t be satisfied that that trust has been restored unless there’s some action taken to have a roll call vote on this nomination.”

Aftre reading several other sources on the topic, I am forced to conclude this particular Washington Post article seems relatively unbiased.
Apparently they haven’t found a way to monetize factual distortion of reporting about Egyptian martial law. Yet.
Fascists there, fascists here, fascists everywhere?
Stifling the legitimate expression of political thought? Seems the “Nazee Virus,” has not been contained. In fact “intimidation,” the hallmark of the Nazi fascists bastards is the reality and the US aides and enables in the intimidation, here and abroad protecting the very profitable business models of the political elites, as Congress protected the institution of slavery and today, unequal pay for woman. BTW, How did Chuck vote on equal pay for woman, in America?

No fascism here?
Try harder to refine your language. Fascism is a subset of the larger class Authoritarianism. Distinctions in these matters are useful and often important. It does no service to the conversation to smudge them. The same point holds in spades for Nazism, which was an ideology along with being an authoritarian form.
Good morning all,
Seems we are already under the military’s control, we kill at will, invade other countries and made another religion a scapegoat., so be sure and let me know when we are full blown Fascists or Nazis. I know drones are a great improvement over the V-2s that’s for sure.
You’ll have to admit at least we are closer than we ever have been before and are picking up speed towards that end.
We have a law that lets our government lock up forever without charges anybody we please. Now EVERYBODY wants one!

What trust? That’s been gone for a decade or more. Only a fool would trust a seantor and most senators aren’t fools. Grassley got caught not paying attention and now he’s whining.
Boxturtle (Tomorrow, it may be a Democrat whining)
Harper leads the way:
Better get used to it.
Only a person who has forgotten every bit of American History they’ve ever read would “admit” that. I know that the situation seems more urgent because it is we who are experiencing it, not some people in oil portraits or grainy black and white photos. This cycle of big business vs everybody else is nothing new and just because it’s happening in our time, doesn’t make it “closer than we’ve ever been”, (to Fascism I presume).
I can’t argue with it much. You have people spiking trees, burning gas guzzlers in warehouses, sabotaging drilling equiptment, vandalizing private property, and on occasion sending bombs.
Yeah, that represents less than 1% of the environmental movement. But the same can be said about anti-abortion terrorists or moslems. Less than 1%.
But we’re So scared of that 1%, we’ll come down on everybody.

Good morning, pups. Mr. Kristof is flying solo today since Ms. Collins is off. He’s in Mashhad, Iran. In “Hugs From Iran” he says a road trip across Iran finds unexpected warmth for Americans.
Here he is.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got waffles with warm maple syrup for breakfast. Running VERY late today… Have a good one.
Only “unexpected” to people like Mr. Kristof. The Iranian people have always very much liked and admired the American people. It’s our government they can’t trust or stomach and they’ve got damned good reasons.
Kristof is correct, based on my limited experience. The couple of Iranians I know are certainly not our enemies, and are tremendous hosts.
Boxturtle (I hear Israel shouting at me: THEY’RE GOVERNMENT AGENTS!!!!)

The key component of Fascism (this critical element of the definition has been de emphasized by the fascists) is:
The collusion between government and big business.
Militarism, Nationalism and Patriotism are also components of Fascism.
