It is perhaps an example of just how much a certain snatch of verse by William Butler Yeats — “The best lack all conviction, while the worst / Are full of passionate intensity” — fits the modern establishment media in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, that the high-flying con artist known as “Bobby Thompson” is not a household name in the Gopher State the way Casey Ramirez had been in the 1970s and 1980s. This is in spite of the fact that he was featured on “America’s Most Wanted”, was recently captured in Florida, and was the subject of a lengthy investigation by the state’s Campaign Finance Board — an investigation triggered by the fine (if largely ignored by the establishment press) reporting of Karl Bremer at Ripple In Stillwater.
Who is Bobby Thompson, really? That’s part of what makes him so interesting — and why the relative soft-pedaling of his story by the local mainstream media is so puzzling: Apparently, nobody besides Bobby Thompson knows his real name. One thing we do know is that he was one of Minnesota’s most prominent Republican Party patrons, donating thousands to people like Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney over the years.
One of Bobby Thompson’s Republican donees is David Carlson, who is himself rather, erm, interesting. In a disturbing way. Carlson is battling Kurt Bills, the Ron Paul Republican who actually managed to get the party’s endorsement, for the right to lose big to Amy Klobuchar this November. Carlson’s apparently a self-appointed surrogate for the West Metro business one-percenters who are appalled at the recent takeover attempt by the Ron Paul wackaloon insurgency that has swept so many other state GOP orgs. But as Sally Jo Sorensen documents at Bluestem Prairie, Carlson manages the rather remarkable feat of making a Paulista look electorally desirable in comparison:
Earlier this year, budding private security executive David Carlson launched a Kickstarter campaign for a reality television show, American PSD, but the campaign closed after it failed to reach its goal.
Now he’s running for U.S. Senate, challenging Republican endorsee Kurt Bills. At today’s Minnesotans for David Carlson Press Event, he’ll share more of his ideas with the media.
As shown by Sorensen, previous ideas shared by Carlson include something that may be the most vile piece of direct-mail marketing I have ever seen (part of it shares space with Bobby Thompson’s mugshot in the graphic above — if there’s anything I’ve seen that’s worse, I’ve probably irretrievably wiped it from my memory), and this inadvertently hilarious let’s-ramp-up-the-fear-factor video touting his private-security scheme, a video that just begs to be showcased on The Daily Show or The Colbert Report.
Finally, we have this:
The 30 year-old Carlson (DOB 09/08/1981) is twice-divorced, and a glance at the state family and civil court records page suggests that enterprising reporters might find interesting reading in the case histories. In the criminal cases, files number 62-T8-00-041234 and 62-T3-06-616062 and 69-T2-02-605266 might also be worth examining.
Hoo boy. Can you “Stupid/Evil/Crazy Vortex“, kiddos? I knew you could.

About Firedoglake
I’m 64 and was born here in Minnesota and have lived in and around the Twin cities all that time. I also consider myself a news-hound and have watched CBS news nationally and the local affiliate, WCCO channel 4 most of my life. Over the years, I’ve noticed a decided rightward slide in coverage and non-coverage in the news. Given all that, this is the first I’ve heard of this ass-hat. It seems all we get for political coverage is what Michele Bachmann is always yapping about, but you hear precious little about what Sen. Franken or Klobuchar are doing. Whenever Bachmann was on WCCO for an interview or news piece, her face was always softly lit and her voice was low and calm. I thought, “WTF”? It also seems that when it comes to non-political stuff, whatever is currently going on in Frank and Amelia’s life is what gets a lead-off or feature story treatment with days of lead-ups or promos. The more you dig in to things the more you see how bankrupt local journalism truly is.
The Center cannot hold and Things are Undone. Speak of Yeats and ThingsComeUndone appears Margaret was talking strange stuff last thread and me getting up early on a Sat is strange:)
I have the power! :-)
Yup, yup and yup. I miss the days of Pat Miles, Dave Moore and even Don Shelby, who apparently was the last of the actual journalists at ‘CCO.
And yes, I, too never would have known about Bobby Thompson if not for the local progbloggers Karl Bremer and Ken Avidor.
Are you telling me people as Paranoid as Michelle just cash checks from anyone without checking out who is giving them checks? So much for the Min GOP being able to run a campaign. Anyone could give them checks just to discredit them. I am not doubting you PW I’m just amazed at the stupid.
The GOP went after Obama because that u of Chicago Prof knew him and he was once a terrorist.
You must be a powerful witch to summon me on a Sat morning:)
…the more you see how bankrupt
localjournalism truly is.Fixed it for ya.
It’s epidemic. Last night I switched from NBC Nightly News’ hyperventilating horserace coverage of the Obama “gaffe” to CBS News which led with coverage of Syria. Scott Pelley is the only voice I’m hearing these days that isn’t driven by pure pap.
Anybody hear any coverage of the dramatic gains in the stock market this past week? Especially given how hysterical all the media people were last week about the drops?

He stole millions from a navy vet charity Fucker! I assume Michelle and the rest of the GOP is returning the money tell me how does a guy with a fake I.D who nobody knows who he really is gets his picture taken with Bush?
The Secret Service has a bunch to answer for nobody should get near the President unless they at a minimum know who he really is.
Can anyone tell us anything about these cases from the case file numbers are they federal, local , civil, criminal?
If Mitt ran his campaign like his business I wonder just how good a businessman he is checking the identity of who gives you big cash seems like a no brainer for any campaign.
How many political campaigns have gotten in trouble for campaign contributions from people who’s past is so bad that just accepting money from them creates a media circus of bad stories for a few days?
Its not like this has not happened before. But stealing from a Navy charity and then giving the cash to Mitt a businessman who should no better?
This is bad and will likely get worse when we find out who he really is nobody changes their identity without a good reason.
I just googled
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=Mitt+romney+returns+money+from+Bobby+Thompson&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
So far no story saying Mitt returned the money. I thought Mitt had the best campaign money could buy? I assumed he had people googling his name 24/7 and contact with Right Wing bloggers who would worry about a story like this.
Mitt not returning the money the second his campaign heard this shows Mitt does not have a good internet presence working for his campaign.
A good internet Presence can be shown by the example of Joe the Plumber I was here late at nite at FDL when someone tracked down the fact Joe was not a Plumber and we all helped spread that story all over the net and even the Main Stream Media.
Re Ron Paul aspect of story.
Picked up (won’t link as you’ll think I’m slumming) that Paul is the biggest nepotist in congress, with 61 relatives employed by him. He acted as Romney shill in hopes of getting Rand the veep slot.
Thiel (Paypal, google) donated $2.7 million to Paul.
fwiw
I am sure if FDL and other blogs follow up on this story the MSM will cover it I mean stealing millions from a Navy Charity just to give the money to Mitt and Mitt so far has not given the money back, er I mean to a real Navy Charity?
This is easily a few days worth of bad news for Mitt’s campaign.
Cripes I don’t even know 65 of my relatives didn’t Ron used to rant about Crony Capitalism I wonder how many Mitt relatives are on his campaign and Bain’s payroll.
If O were a real Dem he would ask that question:)
Gotta go I’ll check back later I wonder who this guy really is.
He stole enough money to live quite well in sunny climes for quite some time.
Ah, but his donations were done in 2007, for Mittster’s last campaign, so they likely can’t be used against Mittens now.
A-yep. Doesn’t surprise me one little bit.
How goes it this sunny morning?
When he was caught he had several different forms of (apparently very well-done) ID on his person. He may well have been using fake IDs for decades.
What’s astonishing about this is that it sounds like he never was fingerprinted on his birth certificate — if there was even a birth certificate issued when he was born — because one would think that the authorities could just simply run his prints through a computer system and find a match somewhere.
Are you getting runtime errors too when clicking on the links? I was able to open the first link, but then the server (at http://pa.courts.state.mn.us/CaseDetail.aspx?CaseID=672613413) apparently crashed last night and is still down.
I was able to look at the case entries in the database by clicking the first one. Looks like he had a wild night in September 31 years ago…all dated 9/8/81: DWI, possession, and “MINOR CONSUMP PASS”
The Republican party has had a long history of serving fraudsters. Ironically, even Ann Coulter has admitted it:

Its the principle if Mitt keeps the cash and does not give it to a real Navy charity well then he moves from stupid inbred crony capitalist to actual scum.
Yes
