About Firedoglake
Mornin’, pups.
Morning Dragon,
Over 300 comments yesterday ! Was it the free coffee ?
A learning experience about recall elections, among other things.
Good morning, all. The fbi is using “flawed and misleading information” for training? I can’t believe that! The legacy of j.edgar hoover would not be less than upstanding and totally moral. Just look at their record of past investigations and other actions.
Good morning pups, and so long for awhile, as I head out to sunny California. I may be able to peek in late in the day, but won’t be around in real time.
Happy to hear Bradley Manning is getting at least a bit of justice.
*poof*
Good morning all.
Anything the Syrian opposition claims is a U.S., Saudi or Israeli lie.
Have a good trip, msmolly. Be safe out there.
Good morning, freedom-lovers. So, the FBI is performing its rightful function as the cutting edge of the fascist wave? “Among the more troubling portions of the training materials are warnings of activists using the Freedom of Information Act, engaging in non-violent civil disobedience, and gathering in coffee shops” This is a coffee shop, isn’t it? We are activists, aren’t we? Oh, good, that explains all the black SUVs parked outside. Grrr!!!
Thanks, SD. Safe travels, msmolly, and don’t be a stranger.
The FBI is conducting the investigation into WH cyber spy program leaks I see, ummmm, when they’re one of many possible suspects, is this a proper role?
Interesting article – Corporations Aren’t The Problem
Be well and enjoy .
Also explains that beat up old white van with all the antennae.
Just went through some stuff at BAR. Some very good and useful analysis.
MoJoe and Dan Senor now doing their best-ever imitation of Dancin’ Dave and Kryin’ Karl in two-step.
Reminds me of an old story. Pulled up behind such a van once, stopped at a light. I had a full carload of female friends. Sign on the back of the van read: “Don’t laugh, your daughter’s in here.” Nobody said a word.
Young BearCountry just went on a class trip to Philadelphia. It is fun to see all of these kids with their stuff going on a big person trip. There will be a dinner on a cruise boat tonight. They’re gone for two days.
DN! has segment of NYC ‘stop and frisk.’
Great, hope they get a good idea of how much work and thought went into setting this country up.
As Kevin G and Jake Tapper have made clear, Jay Carney’s definition of “terrorist” most likely includes these 86 people. And since they were “terrorists,” everything is fine. And we shouldn’t ask any questions because The Authoritarians are keeping us safe.
Besides, as I typed in 6, it’s a lie. Never happened.
It didn’t take much of a thought process to bring the “If s/he’s dead, s/he’s Viet Cong” mindset back into vogue. Assholes.
Re: Europe. Anyone notice that all the news stories are about Spain “successful” auction of bonds? Interest rate approching 7% is successful now!
re: syria. I don’t think including Iran in that working group is a good idea, makes for a lot of issues not related to syria. But I don’t suppose it matters, because that peace plan won’t succeed before Assad’s war plan does. We need a deal that Russia will accept.
Re: Manning. Partial victory, but given the governments repeated discovery violations a real judge might well be making dismissal with prejudice noises.
Re: The Vatican. Power corrupts. Having a pope who spent a lot of effort covering up pedophile priests doesn’t help much. I’ll buy the nun’s a full tank of gas and a good meal if they show up here.
Re: NATO airstrike. I can’t help but remember the old and weird show The Prisoner, where there was a different #2 every episode and nobody knew what side anybody was on.
Re: Israel. If we make too much noise about settlements, they’ll hit Iran to distract us. I’m with ctuttle, Iran is just a shiny object, the real Israeli goal is the destruction of anything that might be Palistine.
Boxturtle (Fresh strawberries all over the place here. Anybody got any uncommon recipes?)
Reprehensible Tom Coburn on Morning Joke calling for pain now to minimize pain later.
Are you serious?
Palestine is already gone. There was a map on Cole’s website a month or so ago.
Yes. Like pulling the plugs out of the neonatal premies in Kuwait.
Corporations: “Stop me before I take advantage of my workers again like my competitors are.” Personal responsibility is so 19th century. :-(
I’ve been saying that for so many years I’ve lost count. Began said in the late 40s he wanted an Arab-free Jewish state. Nothing has changed since then.
I don’t think this comes anywhere close to that.
Not sure it is uncommon, but easy.
Just wash and dry berries, keep the caps on for holding.
Dip in sour creme, then dip in brown sugar.
Depends on who you’re with whether or not you allow double dipping :)
Yum.
Morning, pupses, and thank you SD.
Can one still rent Reefer Madness? (eye roll)
Righto. No one has testified to it in front of congress yet.
Coburn is joining the mantra of accepting really bad choices now, on the totally fictitious belief that later things will improve. Has not been true to date.
Hell, SD, if the dead won’t deny they are terrorists, why should we ASSUME they aren’t? /s Remember, witches don’t float.
Fresh picked strawberries are their own uncommon good eating. But putting them onto fresh baked cake, adding some fresh whipped cream, maybe even nuts, is ideal in my plan. Picked strawberries in the patch yesterday here in NW PA. Yum.
Sure it has. Israel has “aquired” a lot more land that contains Stateless Arabs.
I’m betting that the Arabs wish they’d taken the 1948 partition plan.
Boxturtle (israel has no reason to deal as long as the check from the US treasury clears)
Well, I’ve never heard of it before. And I’ve got all the makings. Sounds wonderful!
Boxturtle (Wonder what would happen if you put that under a broiler for a couple minutes)
You have to have threats in order to justify the number of agents (and agents assigned to counter-terrorism). You have to have a larger number of agents if you are going to rise as a manager within the Bureau. You want to rise as a manager in the Bureau in order to justify larger salary and benefits. Or to come back after a stint elsewhere as the appointed Director.
It’s how J. Edgar did it, and his ghost still haunts the Bureau.
Strawberry cakes and such are delicious, but common. I’m looking for something different.
Boxturtle (I suppose I could wrap ‘em in bacon, anything is bacon is good)
He is just loathsome. Can you imagine having him for your OB? Shudder.
Just saw an interview he did at Project to Restore America where he says,
and the conclusion he draws is,
I don’t know what to say.
Morning SD & Pupses…
Radio piece with Amitai Etzioni. Some intro stuff (for the entire show) before the interview begins. And a link to the article being discussed.
As Howard Carter said, “Wonderful things.”
I’m trying to spare you disappointment.
Growing up near Grand Ma,s farm ( Grand pop was the help) one Sunday a year during the height of Strawberry season , when they’re coming out your ears we would have a shortcake dinner on Sunday.
2 quarts of strawberries, mash 1 quart of the over ripe berries and remix
1 pint whipping cream whipped into a frenzy
White cake , baked in a roasting pan .
Slice the cake in half and while still warm, use half the strawberries inside, put the top back on then drown the cake with the rest of the berries. Try to hide the berries with whipped cream then dig in .
Only had it once a year but that was more than enough.
Next up blueberries !
And the latest photo of Mitt Willard Zombie.

Note that’s a ‘cultural’ shift, indicating that the non-European is to blame for what he accuses the nation of, trying to get by without shedding that pound of flesh – something which he avoids acknowledging as peculiar to our financial community.
mmmmm….bacon…..
I like Dave Johnson. He contributes to Smirking Chimp, along with some other really good writers like David Swanson, Medea Benjamin, Richard Eskow and our Masoninblue.
Spuds says ‘That’s the only way to eat strawberries, ’til they’re coming out your ears.’
Grrr…work blocks that site as “socail networking”. I’ll haveto look when I get home.
Boxturtle (Block recipe site, yet not FDL. Going to keep my mouth shut, I think)
Bacon is the gateway meat.
Fleischer’s in Kingston made a terrible mistake on the meat order for Mem weekend. I wanted some of their organic bacon for the freezer. I asked what size packages it came in; any size I wanted. I ordered 4 half-pound packages. Instead I got 4 pounds, i.e. 8 half-pound packages (some one else picked up the order, so didn’t know what I told them over the phone). I was sooooo disappointed (not).
Sounds so good.
A frenzy of whipping creme. I love that image.
My recipe is really similar, except I make two separate cakes and stack ‘em.
Boxturtle (Like my namesake, I LOVES my strawberries)
When I got on allrecipes, I typed “unusual strawberry recipes.”
I didn’t even get that nuance. Yes, you are exactly right.
And in case anyone missed this piece or if you’ve already heard it, it’s worth a second round…
gmornin pupses.
glad to see the bradley manning news.
Motto hanging in my kitchen: There is very little on earth that cannot be imprved by chocolate. But if you don’t think chocolate will work, consider bacon.
Boxturtle (Chocolate coated, battered, deep fried bacon was once served on Iron Chef)
Hey there! How went the surgery?
Boxturtle (Or did I miss an update somewhere else?)
Yep, that one’s definitely worth a second look.
For Christmas and birthdays I always order Neuske’s Applewood Smoked Bacon for my niece’s grandfather. He adores it.
Mornin’. Nice to see ya.
Good morning, gw. How are you feeling?
Welcome, how are you?
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
US KIA Afghanistan: 2,002
Afghan, Iraki, Yemeni and Pakistani casualties: estimates vary to over 1.5M
US MBS 2012: 19,592 and counting

Be good to yourselves, and all other living things
Namaste
Never. Give. Up.
Holy crap! It that REALLY worth $11/lb?
Boxturtle (Bob Evans Peppered bacon works well for me)
surgery went well. the ligament didn’t need repair. titanium compression screw now holding the bone together. will start working with a chi healer probly today or tomorrow to maximize the healing. was walking without swaying by tues dinnertime. friends from the hood are helping get food on the table and doing dishes.
hey hosting dude!
You’re reminding me that silk was a well kept secret the West found only after WWII.
om and ruth and pups. i’m doing ok. the splint’s pretty hard against the back of my skinny little hand, but i’m not in all that much pain from the surgery itself. nice to have the pain pills for when it gets a bit much.
Best to you. So glad you have those good friends.
He thinks it is :)
He has been the most wonderful grandfather in the world to Audry, so I think it is, too.
BT, I think these might qualify as unusual:
1 Strawbs on sour cream, top liberally with fresh-ground black pepper. Surprising (pepper is also great on apple sauce). Good mealstarter, snack or dessert.
2.) Saute chicken breast(s) in butter and/or olive oil. Add some green onion near the end (so it gets a bit cooked but not slimy). When chicken is cooked to your liking deglaze pan with some heavy cream (can be sour cream) and add sliced strawbs (don’t cook them, just warmed through). Sorry, no actual measurements, just use as much of stuff as what you want/have.
Great news and seeing a smooth recovery, gw. All the best.
That’s actually flattering lol.
Excellent! Sometimes, it IS better to be lucky than good!
Boxturtle (And now TSA has something to look at next time you travel)
Good morning, GW, et al.
Nice to see you are bouncing back. I’ve been wondering how this event affects your ability to use the computer. There is always one handed typing but manipulating a mouse and typing well, I would have a real problem doing so. You simply march on. Good for you!
This is the stuff my brother sends me from VA. Way too spendy for me but if he’s payin’ for it… And it is divine.
I suppose if Mitt can spend $200/oz for cavair, I can spend $11/lb for bacon.
Boxturtle (As long as the wife doesn’t see the receipt)
Did someone say “whipping” ? Front page NY Post, NYC hardware stores are selling ten times as much soft fabric rope, all to WOMEN, following the success of Fifty Shades of Grey. I just want it to be known that Atlanta was ahead of this trend by a couple of decades lol.
Oh, that chicken recipe is new to me and it sounds wonderful. Dinner tomorrow, I think!
Boxturtle (I need insulin just thinking about it)
How are you feeling, gw? Edit: Never mind, just read your #71 lol. ((((gw))))
About the same price, meaning my Mitt justification still works. Not even going to try to resist, my interest is up on these expensive bacons, and I’ve spent more with less hope of return.
Boxturtle (If i get caught, I’m blaming YOU!)
I always wanted to travel the Silk Road. Not a prayer of that, any longer.
That chicken recipe sounds really good. Gonna steal that one :)
Have you ever tried using Greek yogurt for the sour creme? That Fage yogurt is no fat but tastes identical, I think.
I know I’ll be sorry I asked (and should just google it but your response will be priceless) but what is Fifty Shades of Grey?
GW, just reading down and sharing a sigh of relief. Happy to hear hand surgery is behind you and all going well. Chi thereapy, excellent stuff. A friend, concert pianist & harpsichordist, broke his wrist pretty badly. He was teaching in the US at the time and had it set there, but he came home nearly every weekend and over YE break for chi therapy here in TO. His US DR`s could not believe how fast he was back to 100%. Took a little over 3 months, they had said a year, IIRC.
An erotic novel that was just put back on the bookshelves of the public libraries in, I think, Atlanta.
I can handle that. *g*
Hmmm…
Silk, strawberries, whipping creme….
Read a blog, discover the world.
And bacon, don’t forget bacon.
Sure, feel free to substitute away!
Any thickish dairy thing should work — yoghurt, cream cheese, kefir, whatever.
I am watching carbs right now, though, and sour cream has fewer. I don`t hold with the low-fat stuff, I believe that cholesterol is what you produce, not what you eat and my chol is fine — YMMV. But I also believe that people have different metabolisms and our bodies are healthiest and happiest when we are eating what is right for us.
Bestseller heavy on bondage themes. Oh, you country girls lol.
Is that true about the libraries, and if so, how did you hear about it lol?
Kefir is so delicious.
Thinking about dropping some of the carbs, too. You are right, need to pay attention to our bodies’ individual needs. Paying attention is the tricky part.
Have a good day, pupses dears.
Glad you are doing well, greenie, and that your friends are helping.
Safe travels and safe home everyone.
ohmmmm
Don’t have time to look for the original link I saw about the book being returned to the shelves but here’s another on a quick search
I know that I’m not rc, but I thought I would throw in that there is all kinds of kinky stuff in it and women are buying ebook readers to be able to download it immediately. I know mother-daughter people that are reading it. When I heard about it I checked our public library to see if we had it. Not only did (and still do) have it, there were 276 holds. Books at our library go out for 28 days so it would take several months to get to the last person even though there were several books owned by the library. There are actually three books that make up the author’s whole work.
To tejanarusa concerning yesterday’s comment:
Sorry that I missed your response. I didn’t post a link to the transit – I was trying jokingly to cheer you up for missing it by showing you exactly what I saw – which was this
.
Only it was a dot inside a shining disc. The disc was moving, being the sun, but the dot was going very slowly from the lower lefthand corner across. Thanks to SD for posting the technically perfect stuff this morning – I didn’t do that because I was so excited by my dot.
LOL The missionaries knew all you ever need to know about sexuality./s
P.S. I took lots of photos of my dot, and of me and my son looking at and taking photos of our dot. And of course, the image was upside down, so you figure Venus was actually coming in from the top, so more accurately, reverse the image I gave you like this:
.
*smile*
((BC))
Knowing that you’re “not rc” is more important than many people realize. ;-) Isn’t it interesting to see how many people think we’re not getting spanked enough already from our government?
You are referring to the missionary position, I take it.
The whole thing is dotty.
I wonder how the Mayans saw the dot. Me, I am just as happy seeing the light.
rc?
I’m on the library board. We really don’t censor books and as a board we don’t influence the director about what not to buy. Our population is pretty red and t-partyish so we have a lot of ann coulter, glen beck, and etc. I get the director to buy a progressive type when I see one that is not in the system. We are a small library in terms of space, but we are part of a county system so our patrons have access to a wide range of political view points. We don’t yet have Sibel Edmonds’s book or Medea Benjamin’s latest, so I will ask for those. Yves Smith’s Econned is in the system and Chalmers Johnson’s Blowback trilogy, and a lot of Chomsky and Tariq Ali.
Just went and read some of the reviews on Amazon and the level of writing sounds laughably juvenile, truly.
But I didn’t realize that Anne Rice had written erotica.
Really got to go, this time.
I am not rc.
*g*
*poof*
Anais Nin wrote some erotica when she, and others, were struggling in Paris. Paid by the word.
Good, and here there are several professors from the college in town who keep the list ‘distributed’ among literature of all sorts. Even bodice rippers.
I have to admit that I would put coulter and beck and that crew into the erotica bin. It is hard for me to glance at it and see a real reasoned political or economic work. It all seems to be just to whip people into a sexual, heavy breathing frenzy.
Erotica? Not so much. Maybe science fiction….or horror stories, imho.
Me too. Samarkand is on my bucket list. I visited Nissa in Turkmenistan and tried to get a visa to travel to Uzbekistan but there was some funny business with my passport (gave my passport to the brother f a friend of a friend who claimed to have an in with the embassy–never got the visa) and I never got to see the Silk Road cities of fame. *sigh*
What is the meaning of rc? an inquiring mind wants to know, so I Googled it.
Radio Control is an obvious choice, but there is stuff like rc is the command line interpreter for Version 10 Unix and Plan 9 from Bell Labs operating systems. It resembles the Bourne shell, but its syntax is somewhat …, but it’s not that. After a couple of pages, no rc as pertains to this context.
So, what is rc?
When I put in rc I was refering to realitychecker because OmAli wanted to see realitychecker’s response to the Grey novels. I just shortened it to rc. Sorry to cause a commotion.
Referring without endorsing lol.
The way the lazy refer to me here lol.
The Sleepong Beauty trilogy. Quite stirring. I am not rc.
Yeah, didn’t someone she knew also write some? ;-)
Well then, have an RC!
Second that. Good morning to you, RevBev.
LOL All that research when the answer was right under your nose. ;-)
Never.
EPU land
Just wanted to give a shoutout for Tarheel Democrat’s diary on his oppression at the hands of the CPD.
Strongly second that. It should be required reading. Here’s the link: http://my.firedoglake.com/tarheeldem/2012/06/07/report-from-chicago-spring-thank-you-for-returning-my-shoelaces-and-belt-now-can-you-please-find-my-drivers-license-and-computer-my-experience-being-detained-prior-to-the-nato-summit/
There were a number of now-well-known authors doing the same thing. I’m gonna have to remember where I saw the story.
Heh, it’s on the front page now.
His diary is chilling.
Splatters all over the kitchen………..and this mug tells the tale, You Had Me At Bacon…be careful where you walk, everyone :) We don’t want any more broken wrists. I’ll get the mop.
You’re Aging Well
My computer is really acting out. Can’t get the link, or youtube, period, to work.
I was thinking of Henry Miller. Tropic of Cancer was the first place I ever saw the word “fuck” in print, when I was ten or so. Whee, what a thrill lol.
Excellent. That’s where it belongs. I’ve met Tarheel, and I think you have to know what an obviously gentle and soft-spoken gentleman he is to really appreciate the degree of rage I feel at the way they treated him.
Hi JC, have been missing you. You and AppleCanyon.
But, I’m being a little more silent here too, so I understand.
I think.
It gets cyclical, and I’m hoping for a change soon.
Enough with the Gross Subjects, thank you.
IIRC Miller was one of her crowd during that time and doing penny a word stuff, not limited to erotica. The cover photo on Nin’s book that I linked to is more arousing than anything in the book. LOL
There was a movie a few years back about Henry Miller, Nin, and another woman living together. Fair amount of erotica there.
Saw the story? You mean you didn’t read Delta of Venus your own self?
Is it TMI to reveal that I finally sold my copy to the used bookstore a few years ago?
Don’t see it in the 113….Can’t say that I know. Sorry.
Oh, I’ve read it and still have the hardback on my bookshelf, with another of her erotica novels. The story I was referring to was about the writers group in Paris.
Well, maybe I’m Just No Fun anymore? Ha.
Don’t know if you’ll see this, but melt Nestles chic chips (I prefer dark choc) in the micro and dip washed and dried berries in the warm choc. Put on wax paper lined cookie sheet, fridge for half hour, then they can come to room temp to serve. Easy and wows people.
