I’ve been so busy the last few weeks worrying about the Starks, that the recall bid on Governor Joffrey Walker in Wisconsin snuck up on me — does that make this the Battle of Whitewater? (Bad nerd jokes, I know — but look at the time!)
The Wisconsin recall elections are being called an “epic battle,” a “civil war” and even an “un-civil war.”
Oh no!
As usual the White House has pretty much stayed out of this battle to much consternation and it is expected to be close.
So here’s your chance Wisconsinites to vote for or against Scott Walker before the Grand Jury does.

Seems to me DNC and obumer want Walker to win or they would have been in the game a long time ago. Either way it goes,i still feel screwed.
0bama came through with a courageous last second tweet which will surely turn the tide.
Mr. “marching shoes” president lost my vote a long time ago. His reticence in Wisconsin is just another reason atop the ever-growing list.
Good morning all,
Voting on a touch screen is not voting, so did they get rid of ALL the electronic black boxes that installed walker in the first place ?
Was he wearing comfortable shoes when he dropped a tweet ?
Good morning, pups. We have Brooks, Nocera and Bruni today. In “The Debt Indulgence” Bobo gurgles that the Wisconsin vote will be revealing for what it says about the public’s willingness to reverse course on our built-up tolerance of debt. Our “built-up tolerance of debt” is really precious. Perhaps Bobo thinks history began in 2001. Remember all the way back BEFORE then, when there was (gasp) a surplus? Before C+ Augustus pissed it all away? Mr. Nocera, in “Turning Our Backs on Unions,” says labor is in decline, and the income gap is widening. That’s not a coincidence. We’ve forgotten what necessary institutions unions are. Mr. Bruni has a question in “The Enigma Beside Edwards:” What’s the proper verdict on a daughter’s unswerving devotion?
Here they are.
I’m running a bit late, and I’ve got to get out and water things in the garden in case the “possible” rain doesn’t come this afternoon. Yesterday we had lots of dark clouds, LOTS of thunder, and maybe 3 drops of rain. Have a great day.
Shit. Intrade poll cites Walker’s chances of winning the Wisconsin recall at more than 93%.
Not necessarily. It could be that Obama has decided the election is going to be too close and doesn’t want to risk being associated with losing.
Regardless of the reason, it does not reflect well on him IMO.
Boxturtle (Or perhaps the MOTU’s ordered Obama to stay out of it or no campaign money)
It will be about turnout. The wingnuts will always come out to vote, they have nothing better to do. If the left leaning and center voters in Wisconsin can’t be bothered to vote, then we can’t blame Obama. Nor can we credit him. As usual, Mr Fierce Advocate Walkin’ Shoes has better things to do with his time and has no use for organized labor.
Walker, via Citizens United, has probably bought this election. The Dem’s made it easier for him. On the national level by staying out and on the local level by abandoning the themes that made the recall petition drive so successful.
Boxturtle (another missed chance to improve things)
Yeah, wouldn’t want to be seen as too close to labor with an election coming up.
Boxturtle (*spit*)
Really incredible.
What’s with Tuesday voting ?
For the fat cats no problem for the working poor more hoops to jump through.
Since with republican voter ID laws have eliminated any chance of voters committing voter fraud, not the vote counters, why can’t the polls stay open for a week to insure the highest participation ?
I can’t speak for other areas, but I know my area has trouble enough getting poll workers for one day, especially in the mornings.
The reason I heard long ago, and I have no idea if it’s true, is that Tuesday is the day that people are most likely to be home as opposed to traveling. Saturday is the day people are least likely to be home. So switching could actually hurt turnout.
This was long before early voting by mail was an option, so IMO it’s worth looking at again.
Boxturtle (Saturday voting would sure be easier for me)
morning, it seems these voters put in Walker when he was promising to make jobs, now it’s about women’s reproductive rights being icky and workers rights being a threat to the family or something. If they vote him in again, it’s about rule of big money machines, and fear they’ll do … exactly what they did before, take the money and run.
Can there be any doubt that even Mr DLC Bill Clinton would have practically moved to Wisconsin? Say what you like about him but at least he didn’t surround himself with advisers who wouldn’t let him say “boo” for fear of political repercussions. That’s not to sa7y it’s all about the advisers. I’ve been saying for years that Obama would have called himself a Republican if he had cut his political teeth in Texas say, rather than Chicago. He is about one thing: Mr. Obama.
Thanks for the piece on Cate…so painful; hopeful? Not sure.
93% sounds to me like a rich GOPer bought a ton of Walker bets probably under various names. I admit we can lose the polls are real close but 93% chance of Walker winning?
Those odds sound to high to be true.
About as disheartening as it gets.
Many Chicago Dems are to the right of Nixon our new Mayor Rahm for example.
M’eh. Intrade is part of the machine doing their part to depress Democratic turnout by claiming there’s no hope. Take it for what it’s worth.
School is out all those college kids who were protesting Walker are back in their home districts where their Parents vote GOP attempts to hassle them will be hurt because there parents will be around in case they get hassled. Also close districts that went for Walker last time will have college kids home voting.
But this will hurt turnout in the college towns and big cities we counted on still I think we will win the cities its the last minute votes from red districts that magically find votes at the last minute I worry about.
I think someone Karl, or a Koch skewed the results by buying a ton of Walker bets through multiple third parties and if Walker loses then they lose a ton of cash. I seem to recall McCain also getting a boost from some gambling site not that it helped him.
Agreed. Those last minute vote catches won’t fly if there’s a justice system in place, though. Of course, that’s the first place the nutjobs start tearing down when they get into office.
Outside of people who watch Fox News who think Obama is Muslim just what record can Walker run on?
Job Creation? Wisconsin’s economy, His less than stellar debate performance? His reputation for good government now that he is being investigated?
If you hate taxes, Unions, Healthcare and Women you support Walker and we were never going to get those votes.
Justice Dept will be in the state to monitor the election:)
I’m hopeful.
Good Morning
What do you pups feel about the Governor’s Aide’s testamony in court? One day before this recall election? They say timing is everthing…well that and location, but will this have any affect of the voters? Or is it too late?
Barring more vote fraud lets see how the Wisconsin Bloggers reports about denying voters the right to vote at the polls this election is about a Tea Party star actually implementing his ideas and crashing their economy.
We get to see if jobs or hate are more important this election.
We need information from Wisconsin voters on the ground who talk to people to answer that one Demi But I fear they are all getting ready to vote now or are sleeping in because this will be a long nite.
If the voters in WI have a say, there should be a new governor elected. Cannot tell how the PTB will stop that, but they are obviously determined to do it.
So plenty of money for drone operators ( do you think they get bonus’ for kills, are they video equipped ?) actual people needed to run government , not so much money to be found.
We need this one seven billion dollar ship instead of poll workers because ?
Maybe nonquixote will stop by the Diner this morning and give us his impressions.
If Walker wins then he and or Rep Ryan make Mitt’s VP list. If Obama wins then he would be smart to run against the Tea Party and stop caving in to them.
Both sides will claim a win in Wisconsin as a sign their guy will win. The loser will claim vote fraud I expect James O’Keefe will try and video tape voter fraud by getting his minions to commit voter fraud and taping it poll workers in Dem Districts should be extra careful.
But with the Justice Dept there will James face Federal charges if he does his normal vote fraud stunts? Is James still on probation all it takes is one crime and his parole can be revoked.
You mean that citizens really should exercize their rights and get out and Vote? Is that what you’re saying? :)
Cool and I think Norske is doing campaign work in Wisconsin too.
And we should be driving them to the polls if needed.
I wonder how bad the GOP wants this we all think its close will they demand a recount remember Al Franken and Minnesota the GOP very well might hope to delay a loss by Walker running their news cycle before the GOP Presidential Primary by fighting this in court.
If that happens a long nite will turn into months of waiting.
Morning Pups,
When i was a poll worker, I didn’t get paid. Just fed. I cannot recall the last time I saw a pollworker that didn’t strike me as retired, dunno if they’re the only ones available first thing in the morning when I vote or if they’re the only ones who care.
That $7B ship generates a lot of jobs and military construction is the only jobs package we get. Be nice to it.
Boxturtle (I’d rather have my bridges stay up, but perhaps I’m old fashioned)
As badly as I’ve ever seen them want anything. If Walker loses, their ideology loses. And so do their moneymen.
Boxturtle (They’d sell their souls to Satan, if they hadn’t already given them to him)
Yay for you! Thanks.
Hi Ruth,
We’ve done what needs to be done, and we’ll see the results. Leaflets in a couple of high traffic (for this small population) rural county, phone banking until just before the supper hour. Most importantly, I found three new voters, the winning difference in today’s election, and got them in to register to vote.
Great! come to the Diner, and let them know, as we’re over there rooting for you now.
Good luck! This whole thing is based on turnout. We know the Pachyderms are going to be at the polls–it’s getting our side out there that’s going to be the challenge.
I think it’s going to be really close. But I think Walker’s going to lose. He has to. No one that vile should be in the governor’s chair. And I should know–we’re dealing with all-around criminal and Complete Monster Rick Scott in Florida.
Funny how being a convicted, or soon-to-be-convicted, criminal doesn’t seem to alter many a high-profile Republican’s public persona or his behavior at all.
This party truly has become the Weimar bad-guy standard bearers, and the feckless cowardly Dems are the other side. ‘Course, the checks for each side come from the same accounts…
If the coup is successful in Wisconsin, and the Kochs win, the formula for the wingnut rich and born-agains to unite is simple. Lots of funny money, openly corrupt nominees speaking of values and a muddle-headed middle class scared to death of losing their crummy jobs and resentful of anyone who is organized around the concept of fairness. The last 5 years has shown the world America is a mirage, a house of mirrors. A place where equality, freedom (to organize ), and community must be and is being destroyed by the uber-rich, who must be comforted, not threatened, after breaking every norm of decency and law on the books. From banking, to war, the rich have conspired over the last 2 decades with the most corrupt, permanent, gov’t in American history to destroy the middle class’s ability to repel their dubious intentions. Let’s hope this redress of grievances works. On, Wisconsin!
I was the 7th person in my district to vote at 7:30 AM. Not uncommon as I live literally a minute walk from my local polls. So-called progressives of Dane and Milw. Counties dont appreciate the irrational, frothing hatred the rest of the state has for anything that isnt the mythologized Republican narrative. A lot of people have watched their lives crumble, intuiting that their children will most likely live as peasants. The un-abiding rage that this creates must be directed somewhere, and its skillfully directed 180o from those who are almost entirely responsible. Its really pretty amazing when you think about it. I hope Im wrong, but it seems like more Americans need to be reduced to nothing to lose before we see positive and lasting change.
Stony Pillow, I believe Wisconsin is entirely paper ballots. At least they are in my district. You may remember, Scott Walker got into office with a mysterious box of ballots that appeared in Waukesha County at the behest of one of his toady of toadies: County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus.
“As usual, the White House has pretty much stayed out of the battle…”
For shame, Turk! Last night, our bold, progressive, preznint tweeted this:
“It’s election day in Wisconsin tomorrow, and I’m standing by Tom Barrett.” :o)
Which, as Tbogg and Spaulding will surely tell us all, is positively Lincolnesque in it’s courage and political risk-taking. :o)
….and all of that time that Obama spent in Wisconsin campaigning, and the money that he had the DNC send the recall effort, is certain to pay off with a victory for progressives.
(lRight about here, Joan Rivers’ finger-down-throat gag gesture…)
“If Walker loses, their ideology loses…”
It does, and if we lose, ours loses. Which is why we should all sing Hosannah to the Preznint and the DNC, for doing SOOOOO much to help out.
“He’s about one thing…Mr. Obama.”
As one of the regulars said:
“…The most risk-averse president since James Buchanan….”
Which pretty much nails him.
IF we win this, it will be in spite of Obama; not because of him.
