I found out from a Sconnie friend of mine that, to my great astonishment, many Wisconsinites — particularly those living in prime hunting areas — don’t know about the beliefs and comments of Scott Walker’s hand-picked deer czar, Dr. James Kroll, who Walker imported from Texas:
As reported in Lodi Valley News, Walker has hired Texan Dr. James Kroll to serve as Wisconsin’s “deer czar,” a position that gives Kroll considerable power over Wisconsin’s deer management policy. Kroll is an outspoken proponent of game farms, and an opponent of public lands and public game management, which he is on record as describing as “the last bastion of communism.”
The public lands Kroll despises include the state parks, state and national forests, and other publicly held property that hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites—particularly in the northern part of the state—rely on for deer hunting. Hunters on public land may be surprised to discover that Walker regards their annual trek into a state forest as a radical left wing activity akin to marching in a May Day parade in Red Square. But so it is.
If Kroll gets his way, public land hunters will get the shaft. The deer herd no longer would be managed as a public resource, but as the private property of wealthy landowners. Wisconsin will become like Europe, where hunting is the privilege of the wealthy.
In Wisconsin and Minnesota, deer hunting in state forests is a way of life. Even for many city dwellers, going out and bagging your first deer is a rite of passage on a par with getting your driver’s license.
And James Kroll wants to take all of that away.
Worse, he wants to make the Wisconsin hunting experience so pricey and privatized that only the richie-rich types, our genteel overlords, can afford it. In other words, just like he apparently did for Texas:
Do we really want to follow the example of Texas? They started down this path in 2001, after heavy lobbying from the high-fence deer ranching industry. Now 95% of hunting is done on private land, and getting a lease to hunt costs around $2000-$5000 per gun. Is that really what we want in Wisconsin?
A Texas hunter I know complained recently that she and her husband can no longer afford to hunt in Texas, as even the cheap leases will cost over $3000 for the two of them. That’s not counting the cost of licenses, fuel, etc! And when you can’t afford to hunt, that means more money going towards groceries since you don’t have a freezer full of meat.
One of the things that you are taught if you grow up in a hunting household is that one of the most cherished and sought-after freedoms of our forebears was the right to hunt game — a very important right in a time when most people had to secure their own food and couldn’t just drive to the nearest Safeway for it. This was a right that in Europe and the British Isles was limited to the nobility or the rich, who wanted to keep the deer all to themselves. Scott Walker, for all his talk about freedoms, wants to take away a key freedom and birthright of all Wisconsin citizens and turn them back into mere subjects, the very fate their ancestors strove to avoid, just so a bunch of rich elites can — like the lords and ladies of yore — have all the deer to themselves.
Got any rellies in Wisconsin? Make sure they see this. Especially if they live in rural areas.

Really? You’re going to ding Walker because not enough people can kill Bambi and his mom? Really?
Sherwood Forest was a royal hunting preserve. The “robbing” that Robin Hood did was poaching the king’s game to provide meat to the poor.
We are still paying a high price for Joe McCarthy’s drunken accusations and J. Edgar Hoover’s lust for power.
A-yep.
How many of the deer deprived will have voted to keep Walker in office?
I’m assuming Walker will survive the recall, but at this point the more interesting speculation is will he get a second term.
So you think it’s OK to make hunting so expensive that only the rich guys you worship can afford it?
You can still hunt deer in Texas, we just use our cars.
PW, Thank you for the post it is very interesting all the things that Scott Walker is doing to the state of Wisconsin, some known, and many others unknown.
I see the sniper has a comment above. I noticed this the past few weeks on your posts. I looked downstairs and no comments from the same person.
You do a great job of posting and I for one appreciate each and every one of them.
If the sniper was a hunter, he/she would know about CDW disease and why it is necessary to cull the herds to limit this disease and it’s opportunity to spread.
Thanks again PW.
And when the elite hunters or their vendors run out of game from bad game management they’ll hunt poor people like myself. I have friends here in Calli that no longer hunt because of the cost.
Good morning TarheelDem.
And in the years ahead, Scott Walker’s name will rank right up there with McCarthy as far as infamous Wisconsinites are remembered.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why he is leading, or close in this recall election. He has forced a lot of legislation (with the complicity of the legislature) that hurt a lot of people in Wisconsin.
What’s amazing right now is that even with outside money flooding Walker’s coffers, he hasn’t opened up a huge lead on Barrett. Barrett could still win, which is why Walker consented to a debate — if Walker was leading comfortably, he’d be ignoring Barrett, not taking part in debates with him.
And the biggest and best way to ensure Walker goes down in flames is to make sure every Wisconsin hunter knows that Walker and his bobos are planning this. (By the way, did you know that Dr. Kroll runs a Texas deer farm, and some of Walker’s Wisconsin buddies run huge Wisconsin deer farms, so they have a vested interest in privatizing Wisconsin hunting so that deer hunting is made too expensive for the average Wisconsin hunter?)
Here’s some more about Kroll from the Texas Monthly:
This is the guy Walker brought in to be the Wisconsin Deer Czar? Sounds like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse — and then letting the fox charge $100 for every egg. But it’s free enterprise, baby!
PW,
Here in Illinois we have two deer seasons usually the weekend before Thanksgiving and then the first week in December.
In Wisconsin, if I remember correctly, they have a nine day season and a lot of hunters go to deer camps during that time. Many in the past take their vacation time around that hunting period.
The new rules that you are writing about, will surely piss off a lot of those hunters in the future to realize they are limited and have to pay a fortune to enjoy what they did in the past seasons with limited expenses.
Thanks for the post PW.
Saturday morning and I have a lot of errands to run. Have a great weekend everyone.
Of course he does. Shitter is, after all, a bought-and-paid-for troll for the 1%.
Of course he does. Goopers live and breath making sure nobody else can do what they do.
Why don’t the Repubick foreign policy-fiscal-morality experts just frame this as golf courses with automatic weaponry? It would be a shoot in, a shoo in.
More likely that he’ll be ranked right up there with Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer after cutting health care service funds for women, children and the elderly.
But the NRA gives Walker an “A”……
Shades of the British enclosure laws. Americans generally have no idea how far they’ve descended towards serfdom, their eyes still dazzled by the mirage of American exceptionalism. Privatization is the hand basket to hell.
It’s hard totell if the Shitter is paid troll, or just a poor fuck who needs an intervention. I’ve started to feel sorry for him. Must be a miserable life. I’m sure there must be some kind-hearted therapist out there who might be able to give some help.
This is just the preview of further monetizing the access to public parks and lands and preventing the financially strapped family that used to be able to spend a couple days each summer camping, from ever enjoying that activity again.
And poaching of deer will be the additional crime that will keep the private prisons stocked and the food pantry freezers empty with the lack of donated game.
There’s just no getting around it.
The human animal just loves to kill.
To wantonly kill anything and anything that exists on this rock.
But his preferred prey will always be his fellow man.
And for those brave specimens who savor using a high-tech weapon to kill defenseless animals as proof of their rite of passage into manhood,
All they have proven is that the true beast is alive and well within their minds, and
The skin they wear is but a thin facade hiding the still primitive, murderous curse of this world,
The inhuman being.
Same here.
Hard for me to drum up much sympathy for recreational killers,
whatever their income bracket.
Point of the article was not to drum up sympathy for hunters, but to prevent privatization and further monetization of public natural resources, by not supporting Walker and his corporate cronies.
Not a big fan of hunting myself, but deer herds these days are a human made problem that needs human based attention. Ever heard of car and deer collisions, crop damage or now more prevalent chronic wasting disease? Are you acquainted with any financially strapped families who depend on wild game to supplement their diets? I am.
Everything in the meat section of the market was once alive and was slaughtered.
Survival is one thing whether someone else does the killing or we do it ourselves.
But recreational hunters?
Well, that is an entirely different matter.
It is the jungle alive and well in the midst of civilization.
Too many Bambis, dude. If some aren’t hunted, more starve. Why so shocked? If there can be pro-gun socialists such as myself, why not pro-gun liberals? Not every member of the NRA is Republican, you know.
Then again, you may not. You certainly won’t find that info in the RNC talking points.
You do make a valid point.
But it is not the necessary ‘thinning’ of the herd that concerns me.
It is the orgasmic pleasure some brave souls derive from the thrill of taking the life of another living being.
Ah, therein lays the rub.
NRA has its own 1%. you don’t think the LPierre-Cheney crowd hunts with the great unwashed, do you? Send this post to the Ed Show … right in his backyard.
yes I have hunted, yes I eat wild game. Cheney-lapierre are not hunters. Just jackals.
you hit the mother load with this, pw.
Actually, the fecundity rate of deer and most other wildlife, when left to themselves, is pretty self-regulating. Nature is not stupid. It does not need help from immature self-aggrandizing human egos with a sick idea of what a “sport” is and what constitutes “fun and entertainment”.
I have no gripe with rural people really needing to put food on the table but that’s not what the NRA is about. Or little Dickie Cheney, the fucking basket case who needs to brag how many hundred birds he can kill in an hour. Why don’t these NRA “men” just grow a set of balls? So the rest of us can enjoy a walk in a state-owned preserve without the risk of getting our heads blown off.
You need to read this article: http://www.citypages.com/2004-11-10/news/bambi-must-die/
And this one: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/19/opinion/why-bambi-must-go.html?ref=contributors
Or you could just go to most any state park where deer are allowed to run rampant and notice the complete lack of understory. That’s due to massive deer overpopulation — which occurs because deer thrive in ecologically-damaged areas.
Hunters in the Midwest don’t hunt solely for trophies; what they shoot goes into the freezer and feeds their families. That’s going to be a lot harder to do if they have to pay a few thousand extra dollars per person per year for that privilege. It also means that the problem of deer overpopulation (and devastated understories) will just get worse as there will be fewer hunters to reduce the deer population.
There are a lot of people in Northern Wisconsin who would likely starve if they couldn’t hunt. It’s too far north and the soil’s too poor for farming, and not many people know enough about the local flora to go the Euell Gibbons route.
These are precisely the people who would desert Walker if they knew about this plan.
“Shades of the British enclosure laws.”
That’s exactly it.
Ironically, whenever anti-enviromentalists talk to hunters, they love to compare environmental regs to the Enclosure Acts. Now, we have an anti-environmentalist who, in order to enhance the profits of private deer ranches, is pushing a modern-day version of the Enclosure Acts, and the multi-thousand-dollar fees make far more effective barriers than stone walls ever did.
Coming here late, but just wanted to say, “Glad to have you back posting again”. (After your experience in Chitown, perhaps you can relate a little to Bambi? You know, being “game” for hunters?)
Several commentators have noted that hardware militaries are passé, finance is a superior tool for conquest.
I guess people will catch on eventually. It was so much easier to identify the means when the crossbow was banned by the Church.
You’re probably right PW but Repubs in Wisconsin eqate Dems with the Blah people and they don’t like that.
When I lived in Wisconsin I talked to a farm hand from a really Red area him and his dad would go hunting fill up the freezer with deer meat…and that was pretty much all the meat they ate all winter.
Rural Whites are often Poorer whites there are not many high paying jobs in the sticks. Hunters are often NRA GOPers because they need their guns to hunt. The GOP cannot support gun rights then take away the deer hunters shoot at!
PW this story is big are there any other states where the GOP is taking away the public land hunters hunt on?
If so we have a good chance of splitting the hunters from the GOP. In rural areas that very well might mean we can compete in these districts.
OK, I give up, I cannot get a link to stick for a comment. Please check out the Wisconsin Citizens Media Cooperative for excellent follow-up story about impending regulations slated to be publicized and enacted as early as June, with no DNR input.
