I was listening to a blues show on the radio last night and I heard this line in a song. Don’t know the song, nothing, but this lyric sure stood out – God bless the poor cuz the rich know how to steal.
The truth will set you free but first it will piss you off.

About Firedoglake
Good morning.
Being one of the favored inside circle to get hot IPOs at the offer price used to be one of the ways of outperforming the market. Not any more.
Mornin’, pups.
Thanks, SD, from Eurobond to Eurodebt, the magic of austerity turning us from consumers into the ideal for the 1%, debtors and ‘owe your soul to the company store’.
Edit – Ruth.
Good Morning SD & All Morning Glories.
If I see any handbaskets marching down the street today, I’m going in the opposite direction.
democracynow will hold a debate after headlines on whether NATO should exist at all. What’s to debate.
What Pakistan turned down the bribe money? You can only shoot innocent civilians for so long before even bought
off pols start feeling the heat from voters.
If Obama thinks Pakistan is being ‘consumed’ by extremists.” maybe he should consider what America would do if Canada shot missiles at American drug dealers and killed civilians?
At least I’m enjoying the ride. Not!
Exactly how much money NATO is costing us because we won’t let Russia the only threat in the region join?
Exactly how serious Russia is about taking out NATO anti missile systems in Europe built supposedly to stop Iran but Russia worries it could give NATO first strike capability?
Exactly how stupid NATO is is the question lets count the ways:)
Morning, all. Aung San Suu Kyi should be a hero to the world. If she were the Pres of the US, she probably would have sent even more bombers into the ME to show what a real Peace Prize winner does. She would certainly follow another country’s dictates on what should be done to a third country to force the third country to give up its sovereignty under the guise of keeping it from having the nuclear arsenal that the first two have. She would certainly support the second country’s drive to ethnically cleanse the territory desired by the second country and show that those to be ethnically cleansed were wrong to protest against the clensing and deserved to be bombed and have white phosphorous dropped on them. She just hasn’t had the chance yet.
Gotta jump outta the basket and head for the hills.
Good morning, Dinerzens!
Just loved coming home from Florida to the news that Notre Dame is suing the Obama administration over the contraceptives mandate. Interesting headline on this article, too:
Notre Dame files lawsuit against Obama on health care mandate and abortion drugs.
Spud, did your mother ever have that surgery? Hope if she did the outcome was good.
Ahem, NATO’s purpose was anti-Soviets. There is no USSR anymore, so no need for NATO; Russia joining would be the height of mockery.
And what makes you think Russia is a threat to anyone?
Good morning, pupses, and thanks SD for the links and coffee. Just a hi and bye on the way to the greenhouse. Is molly back today? Hi, if so!
Just ordered the Hell, No! book by Ratner. I love TRNN.
Hope you all haz a good morning, see you later.
demi and spuds – stay away from Southbound trains as well. No use taking chances *g*
I think Greece wants to keep using the euro but not pay its debt. Spain, Italy, Ireland I am sure will be no votes on kicking them out of the Euro.
German bankers and American bankers must be pissed I am sure the American banks will say we have almost no money in Greece.
But they won’t say how much money they have in Germany, France and English banks who I am sure are all exposed to Greek debt.
If Obama starts talking about Greek debt then American banks are exposed.
When the Catholic hierarchy cleans up it’s own house and confesses its’ sin; ya’ know, spend some time in the box and contemplates the future they can open their hostholes. Other than that happening they can have another hot cup of STFU. 14% is not a majority of anything as far I understand math. Let’s hear from the Unitarians on this contraception issue, too. Fair and balanced and all that b.s. Good on ya’.
Ruth in for Spuds, him mom had surgery, is in recovery, so far so good. Thanks for asking.
I’m staying home today. You’re the one who should be careful out there. And, say hi to the plants for me. (I talk to my plants when I’m watering them, but don’t tell anyone.)
We’ll see you later, I hope.
I’m a Unitarian Universalist, and I am pretty sure what they’ll have to say.
Good to hear. I thought it was to happen about this time.
But it would keep the peace NATO countries so far I don’t think have ever attacked each other. Russia joins our troops can leave Europe Russia and the EU can cut military spending and raise their standards of living.
If the EU cut lets say 20% of military spending I think they might have the money to bailout Greece.
I agree that Russia joining would be the height of mockery. But mocking war is probably our best tactic to end wars.
Give me a break. Standard neocon wackery to think that Russia would attack anyone. Why the hell would they do that. And if they were going to for some deranged idea, being a member of NATO would not deter them.
Without Russia as a threat why should we have NATO? Let Russia join stop trying to get first strike nuclear capability and we end the need for military troops.
Given the State Russia is in I doubt the EU should worry much now. Russia learned from Afghanistan that holding hostile territory is costly.
Occupy Activists: Chicago NATO Summit Helped Revitalize Movement
Just how much military aid have we sent them over the decades?
Anybody with a long or medium range missile with a boomer warhead has first strike capability.
You don’t really think that the U.S. would reduce military spending if the excuse disappeared? The U.S. would only find other excuses. Like bombing Kosovo & killing more people than terriss did.
Russia is NOT trying to get first strike capability. U.S. is. NATO is a U.S. tool.
Russia has more right to be afraid the US will invade them than we have to worry about an invasion by Russia. After all, we did invade them after WWI because we didn’t like the group that was winning the revolution there.
http://news.investors.com/article/610949/201205101328/wisconsin-wife-runs-over-husband-in-recall-vote-dispute.htm?ven=rss
Funniest news all year:)
If we were ever to build a missile defense system that works we could strike without fear of retaliation.
The downside of U.S. reducing forces in Afghanistan-Iraq is that it provides more forces for U.S. attacking any other country at will. Iran next.
Guest on democracynow defending NATO is an idiot. Sez NATO responsible for democracies in E. Europe. Strong argument to be made that would have happened a lot sooner had NATO not existed, since Soviet putting down those efforts was in response to (i.e. blowback) NATO.
Why would we want to?
It’s nice to hear good news for a change. I bet there’s a bit of a weight of Spud’s mind and I’m sure it was a great relief to have you there for support.
I guess that sums up the voter split. The women don’t want to be dominated by the men, and the men want to dominate because they can’t stand the idea that the women can think for themselves.
I agree we would find other excuses but thats because our pols and generals are not logical, love power and love to have a reason to tax us and keep us poor.
But it would be much harder to justify a big military without Russia as a threat. China has no Navy to speak of and won’t for decades granted thats not stopping us from using them as the new threat.
However as we spend money on the military we weaken our economy and in time China will surpass us because we wasted so much money on our military.
I find the irony funny:)
(((spudtruckowner’s mom)))
;)) A roll model wife….or, role model wife. Thanks. One determined woman. Hope a lot of husbands get outta the way….
Us nobody the Generals in the Pentagon Russia and China. The Neocons they are still around would get Iran and Mecca.
Gov Walker is really bringing out some attitude and determination from our side:)
Whenever the subject of Russia comes up, I remember watching Pat Boone on television, when I was very young, saying he’d rather have his daughters be dead than Red. That scared me and I think it was my first emotional reaction to a glimpse into RightWingNuttery.
Unh, no. Soviet subs launching low flying cruise missles would be completely untouched by any high altitude interception. 90% of the “value” of our country sits within 10 miles of the coast.
But we really have no gripe remaining with the Russians. They’re not trying to conquer Europe, their empire aspirations are over and we have no territorial disputes. What remains can be handled with diplomacy or a little cold war style espionage.
Boxturtle (Right now, Canada trying to push tar sands south is the greatest external threat to us)
After the Soviet system was no longer considered to be a threat, there was a call for using the “peace dividend” for peaceful things. That quickly disappeared as a very vocal minority and the congress decided that the military needed strengthening even beyond what the military wanted (and it still happens).
Converting the anticommie excuse to the antiterriss excuse tells you just how easy it is. In fact, terrorism is even better than the Red Scare bc it allows easier reasons for arresting U.S. citizens, since no proof is required that someone is a terriss.
Chippewa Falls?!
Slow-ly I turner, that is, I was just reading about that area an hour or so ago:Though the sand mines might not be an immediate issue in the recall election, I wonder whether that could have something to do with the wife’s sense of urgency.
Spud thanks everyone for good wishes for his mom. (We visited yesterday and she’s in good spirits.)
Valid point we would force Russia to build up there sub fleet if we built an anti missile defense system that works.
I hear the GOP wants to build one on the east cost never mind it still doesn’t work.
Any bets on Obama caving into the GOP’s demands before or after the election?
There were a couple of good Scott Horton interviews on antiwar.com a couple of weeks ago revealing the insurmountable technical difficulties of star wars. Sorry, I didn’t save the links. But come to same conclusion. It’s nothing but MIC welfare.
I also remember that nonsense. I remember thinking that I wasn’t ready to die for someone else’s political beliefs. Of course I was so naive that I thought that the Army-mccarthy hearing were stupid.
Thanks for good wishes, things need doing, and thanks for the good company.
(from Ruth and Spuds)
IIRC, it was Betrand Russell who said he’d rather be Red than dead.
That is excellent news. We only get one mother, and when she is gone, we are never the same again. I say this 27 years after losing mine. Best wishes to Mother Spudtruckowner. Good morning, beautiful Dinerzens. Must see TV today will include Jamie Dimon having to defend the indefensible. Got popcorn?
If fracking is becoming an issue that motivates voters this much then we need to look at states with the most fracking problems and take another look at the election map.
This could be a sleeper issue that the MSM will ignore because thats what they do but it effects rural areas the GOP’s stronghold.
The GOP with drill baby drill and constant calls for less environmental protection own fracking…and all its problems.
We need polling in areas where there are the most fracking problems.
I used to think so. But Israel’s Iron Dome system mostly works and it’s getting better. You CAN hit a bullet with a bullet!
But any adversary could overwhelm any affordable system rather cheaply. Decoy’s. Saturation. Stealth.

I’m thinking they’ll convert “missle defense” to “immigrant defense”, move the system to the Mexican border, and double the allocated money.
Boxturtle (Instead of high explosive, we’ll load the warheads with shrapnel)
Just watched a piece about Mia Love out of Utah that the Reps are excited about. Found this place and had my eyes opened as I read.
Sounds like tons of fines and creating a police state which is spun to be called “public safety” is a big revenue generator. Gives the honest outcome of “less government” and “personal responsibility.”
This is police state language.
As Dragon reminds us, Where there’s life there’s hope. So, hey, I’ll take green, purple or yellow over being dead.
What has Israel’s system protected them against? Spuds? Hardly ICBMs.
Good morning BT. FYI, I covered my short position on Friday, taking a modest profit, because I anticipated the big bounce we are now getting. I intend to go short the S&P again if they get the price up into the mid-1330′s; that level should see the start of a much larger decline than the really nice one we’ve had since I flagged it to you on May 3. (If the world’s gonna end, lefties might as well make some money off of it lol.)
Wonderful words to describe the truth.
(Are you blogging from the Dragon Capsule that is in orbit right now?)
My daughter just finished a study on the founding of the states along the Mexican border. She was especially taken by TX.
She pointed out how founders lied to take the land from Mexico and that if there is anywhere in the nation where border issues should not be an issue, it is along the Mexican border. “Open the border,” were her words. “We created the immigration issue with lies.”
“We are the immigrants.” she quipped.
I would be very careful about accepting at face value the claim of intercepting a missile with a missile. The original claims trace back to the first Gulf War and eventually were shown to be exaggerations.
All the U.S. “tests” have been faked.
True. But they’ve proven they can hit a high speed projectile with another high speed projectile on VERY short notice with a very short flight path. That was the biggest technical issue and they seem to have it about 90% resolved.
That system wouldn’t work on an ICBM, but take the software and discriminators and you could build a system that would.
Boxturtle (And start a brand new arms race)
Yes, but note that the actual fracking is not being done in C. County —they’re just taking the sand, which has an especially useful shape to its grain, from there to other places where fracking is being done. So it’s a different kind of damage, more aking to mountain-top removal from the sound of it, and in these two accounts at least it’s not even clear that anyone has checked to see what it does to this particular soil to have one of its major constituents stripped out of it. But it seems that any estimate of the land that is damaged or destroyed by a given fracking operation should be increased by some factor that represents the additional land that was destroyed to extract the drilling sands used in the operation.
A Chippewa County resident:
Crazier by the day.
You must be a mind reader. I covered mine Friday as well. Seemed the right thing to do.
I’m sorely tempted to run to gold, but the price is so high above the support level that i worry. But with austerity about to go down in Europe, perhaps there’s still room for upward movement.
Boxturtle (Tonight, however, I’m going to invest in steak and beer)
Except for the deception balloons that would be sent up in huge numbers.
Amen
Faked, or fudged. It helps a lot to know where the missle is coming from so you can locate your interceptor. And you don’t have to worry about discriminating the target, whatever is in the general area is probably it. And the incoming missle likely doesn’t have decoys or chaff.

By the way (sorta OT) I finished Sibel Edmonds’s book while I was away, and it sure is damning of our government, and she is scathing about the Obama administration. I recommend it highly!
Classified Woman: The Sibel Edmonds Story
gee, wonder how the Opus Dei Court will rule on Notre Dame’s lawsuit.
Here is a quote from a Facebook thread about the Notre Dame lawsuit:
[NOTE: I am not linking to it to preserve the privacy of the commenter.]
The CHEAP deception balloons. A key point for me is that billions that we spend can be overcome by hundreds of thousands the Russians might spend.
Naturally, in the interests of fairness, the Russians would limit themslves to balloons. They wouldn’t use ECM, evasive action, chaff, or their knowledge of where our interceptors are based to aquire an unfair advantage.
Boxturtle (Cheesecake is much cheaper. And NYC will cheerfully supply all that diplomacy can eat)
My short-term target for the previous decline was 1260 to 1280 on the S&P, starting from approx 1,400, so I felt it was good to get out at 1300 and avoid the weekend and Facebook uncertainties (although I was pretty certain FB would not turn out well); Sunday overnight made a low of 1387 on the futures, which is what I base my work on. I have had a great record on gold, called the top at $1,890 this spring, and had a downside target of $1,100-$1,200, so while we may have a little bounce here, I still think we are heading much lower on the gold.
I cannot refresh the page. Is something up with the site?
Working for me. But the site software has always been buggy. Closing, and reopening in another window and making sure the page finished loading normally clears things for me.
Boxturtle (FDL seems to like to show a lot of ancillary crap)
I cannot overcome the gold going lower feeling as well. Yet, I’d speculate there will be quite abounce if the Greek elections go against austerity.
Boxturtle (Not a gold bug, but gold has it’s uses)
Thanks. That is what I have to do with every thread I am reading this AM. :(
BTW, BT I would value your op on Mia Love– a candidate the Utah GOP are all gaga about.
I have a link at 63 that is an interesting bit to read after you have read all the hooplah about her.
Are you talking about this page? Mine is OK….
I cannot get refresh to work on any FDL page this AM. I can go to EmptyWheel and I have no problem.
I saw a post here or over at Naked Capitalism to the effect that the Smart Money know that the offering price of Facebook was way too high, but that thee is no more Dumb Money left to pawn it off on. You can only clean the chimps so many time before there are no more chimps left to clean.
Mah — I’m betting on them attacking OWS demonstrators in a major American city. Much easier on the logistics.
She seems a faily standard wingnut, anti-abortion, anti-government, and strongly anti-social spending. However, she also seems to be rational to a point, not a part of the baatshit wing.
For the non-tea party GOPers, she’s probably a good choice.
And i can’t find a link in your posting at 63.
Boxturtle (Her resume reads like she’d like a seat on the Catfood Commission)
A LOT of money is going to simply vanish with that IPO. I’m lucky I stayed away from it.
I wish I could claim it was financial genius that kept me away from Facebook’s IPO, but it was really just an intense dislike for facebook and their business model. I wanted nothing to do with them.
Boxturtle (Every time I’ve visited, I got the feeling of being watched and catagorized)
I think any bounce in gold will be capped at $1,700-$1,750, max. I’m not a gold bug either, but it has always been a market I can call with great accuracy, and I’ve made a lot of money over the years trading gold stocks. Right now, my eye is on the prize of selling the SP’s at 1335-1337.
FDL seems to like to show a lot of ancillary crap
You must be feeling your oats this morning.
There’s a lot I could say about that line, but, I’ve only had 1 coffee yet, and I try to hold my sarcastic remarks for later in the day.
BT, letting out your ya ya’s this morning?
Russia is only a threat to US hegemony in the Near East and Central Asia, which are in her back yard. The Russians aren’t dopes. They understand that the present State Department is not George Kennan’s State Department. Hillary notwithstanding, it is full of Neocon cranks who would love to dismantle what’s left of Russia. The Russians are also very aware of the fascist rhetoric coming out of the United States. They’ve seen this movie before, and they didn’t like it. It a very hard thing for most Americans to swallow, but their country has become increasingly aggressive over the past 15 years, to the point where a large segment of the civilized world regard the United States (together with Israel) as the greatest danger to world peace. For all the bad things Obama has done and is doing, there is the single offset that he is probably restraining that aggression. The drone strikes are the price of not doing something much worse.
I think you’re right. At least, I’m going to blame you for talking me out of gold if it goes up. :-)
Boxturtle (if it goes down, naturally I’ll claim all the credit!)
Sometimes, my evil twin takes over my keyboard. Other times, my evil twin and I collaborate on the text.
At home, I don’t see most of the crap. When an adserver slows me down or serves me a virus, it gets dumped into my HOSTS file and I never see it again.
Boxturtle (At the office, I’m not allowed to edit HOSTS *sigh*)
Boxturtle (Not a gold bug, but gold has it’s uses)
Right. Plating for electronics for one.
Also one of the best materials for exquisite sepia prints, in the old analog days. I still have a vial of AgCl. About 1Gr worth.
Of course. That’s the exact treatment I get from everyone I share my “genius” with lolololol. That must be just what I deserve here on Earth, but I am still counting on it to get me into Heaven one day. ;-)
Even excluding jewelry, gold is arguably the most useful metal in the periodic table after Iron and copper. IMO if Jewelry uses were banned, gold would still be trading about $400/oz.
Boxturtle (Speculation has driven it too high, yet it MAY go higher)
So my vial of AgCl is worth maybe $14. I think I may keep it for the expected return of analog printing. (Not!)
Oh my gosh, it did not go through. I am having problems with this site this AM. No probs on Emplywheel, Juan Cole…
Here is the link to a blog I read this AM. I think there is danger in the individual who can sound sane…
http://www.saratogawatchdogs.blogspot.com/
It’s ok here. Generally I expect problems like refreshing to be local rather than global. Local mean my installation.
I understand “local,” however, any other site I go to is fine.
Hey BT, it was suppose to be comment 58. My bad
So far as precious metals, I would expect silver to be right up there with gold as useful. One complements the other. Silver: light sensitive, reactive, conductive. Gold: non-reactive and not a particularly good conductor. Enduring.
But so far as light sensitivity, silicon has replaced silver, by being semi-conductive.
I’m sure the metallurgists among us could amplify on all this in spades!
Computers are crazy that way. The umpteen reasons why “it’s gotta be you not me” that occurs in the Photoshop Forums is almost uncountable.
No worries. I read that link, and it reinforces my initial impression of her. I would add in defensive, passive aggressive, and mildly paranoid.
Boxturtle (Fairly mainstream GOPer, IOW)
My “it’s gottah be you,” is that there must have been an FDL update that my computer does not like. I cannot get the edit to function here. It takes five to six times to have success with the edit. And I cannot refresh. It must be a recent update because I was here two days ago and had no problems.
I have no idea what update may be causing probs. on my end. I just know that I am going to other blogs and having no problems posting or refreshing.
I do strongly suspect the FDL software as a cause of a lot of these issues. I get it on three VERY different computers (one VISTA, on XP, one Win 7) with both IE and firefox. My personal computer seems to have fewer occurrences and I suspect that’s due to my blocks on the adservers.
Boxturtle (If I could see the syslogs, I’d probably know for sure)
Man, I thought my blocks on the adservers were the problem.
I’ve been around the block (pun intended!) many times over these kinds of issues. The missing element is the dearth of error logs which are the source of information leading to root causes. Those that provide this kind of service become stellar at fixing things.
They may be, which then puts the problem back in your system.
It’s possible.
When I dump an adserver in my hosts file, from that point forward the browser will attempt to resolve that site at my personal computer. Which will eventually time out. Some sites, either to get around the host file block or billing or such, require a reply from the adserver before proceeding. I don’t know if FDL does that.
To get around that, I got a freeware webserver and installed it on my computer. It responds to any request with a 404, but it responds and that seems to satisify most hosts.
Boxturtle (Hitting CNN’s front page has got me as many as 50 ad transactions!)
TBogg works fine for me. Scratching my head.
“The rising star of Europe Alexis Tsipras.” Brilliant campaign tactics by Tsipras to make himself an international media star, thereby escaping the provincial vortex of Greek politics. His new prominence boosts the self-esteem of the downtrodden Greek voters, who will now be much more likely to award him their votes.
Meanwhile, in Japan, Fukushima reactors 3 and 4 (the ones that house huge stores of spent fuel) at risk of collapse that could cause nuclear calamity for entire globe…
http://paper.li/fukushima_actu/1303664917
And then there’s this about Fukushima’s early crisis period:
…not the first report that TEPCO tried to abandon the plant.
Afternoon, pups. Lunch break visitor checking in. Not a lot for me to do here at work; just as well, as last week wore me out. apparently there are some new cases at early stages where they don’t me yet. Think I’ll take some time off, leave early, come late, this week. Also do some searching for other work to restore the lost compensation.
Rather a depressing discussion this morning. I admit, I’m not thinking much about Fukushima, in part because there seems absolutely nothing I can do about any of it. If I lived on US west coast, perhaps I’d feel the need to move east…but would it matter?
Glad to hear spuds’s mom is doing all right. I’m assuming she is, like my mom, one of the “old old.” Over eighty-something, I think is what that means. Always worrying when somone that age has surgery.
Hey teja. Funny about the origin of your handle yesterday. I always assumed–wrongly–that tejanar was some spanish verb in the infinitive and the usa was the Yankee part of your name. lol. I imagined tejanar -ing as dancing tejano style or something.
Washing up some things and came across this mug….be careful how you answer…. Do These Protons Make My Mass Look Big?
Think I’ll just be going, now……lol
Dreams Holli Be Home
And I thought the last three letters designated home country :)
My Mass always looks too big, sadly. I don’t know what protons have to do with it, though.
Like someone in a diary said this morning, spaceship Earth – fewer lifeboats than Titanic.
I need to go and read that. I think it was the fracking sand article but don’t remember for sure. Now I can’t find it.
I think it has to do with the “tons” portion of “protons”. Or something!
Just wait until you get to be my age. The protons get stickier.
If Fukushima had been abandoned…holy crap. It may cause global nuclear catastrophe as it is, but if it was abandoned in the early days? Indescribably stupid.
Still can’t fathom the bravery of the workers who stayed.
ysp, and omali – lol! I, of course, never saw the alternative possibilities you saw. No wonder wendydavis was baffled enough to ask. Maybe I should put a hyphen between tejana and rusa? Naw, that’d be a pain to type.
(I love the verb, tejanar…now I haveta think of a meaning for it…)
When you do, we’ll have it printed on a coffee mug and it can be yours *g*
When you guys were little, did your moms squeeze the snapdragons and make their little “mouths” open and close?
Oh, om, how cute- a physics joke! (nobody makes physics jokes around me anymore since I got divorced from the scientist).
Perhaps this is the right audience to mention my newest borrow from the library: Turing’s Cathedral, the origins of the digital world (er, subtitle may be paraphrased). Interesting, the 5 pages I’ve read so far.
Wow, no! Not sure we ever had snapdragons, but no, my mom was not that kind of mom. :(
I didn’t realize, or maybe I would have hesitated, too. What sort of scientist was he?
I thought everyone knew about the snapdragons, but so many people I have talked with did not…just had wondered about the name. Mom loved theatre and had a great imagination and would make the snapdragons have conversations, it is a nice memory. Was your mom not playful?
Heh. Nope, can’t say I’ve ever seen that done. Your mom must be a hoot. No, my mom is more the type to forrage for wild weeds to cook up in a pot for dinner. No wonder I’m so odd…
Fun,,,,i had forgotten the snapping thing…been a loooong time. Later, we did not live around them very much.
snapdragon
ysp – yeah, what you said about Omali’s mom. Playful? My mother? uh….not so much. Sometimes I think she was born without a sense of humor at all, though that’s not true -it’s just different from mine.
Oh, and Om, that wasn’t a complaint about the physics joke, it was a thank you! One of the things I miss about that marriage was hanging around really smart people, the kind who made physics jokes (that I didn’t get! this one was more my speed. Oh dear, did I just insult you? That is not what I meant, at all). No, he was/is a chemist, and most of our marriage was during his five years at MIT, getting his PhD. His first loves were math and physics, though, but figured chemistry was more job-friendly. Imagine a guy who, before calculators were available, sat on the sofa doing advanced calculations by hand, covering reams of paper which slid down to the floor, for the intellectual fun of it.
Good times./s (no, a lot of those years was fun. We were considered odd by both families, especially his, from small-town southern Indiana)
Hysterical! And adorable!
No, you did not insult me, lol! My dad was a nuclear engineer who did calculations on table napkins at dinner and used a slide-rule like most people use a calculator, and the guy I almost married was an engineer/mathematician, so I probably heard a lot of the same jokes (that I also didn’t get).
Gotta run to the market in between thunderstorms. You guys have fun!
Protons. That’s a food group, right?
Ha! Slide rules…an instrument of mental torture for me. Tom tried to teach me how to use it…but by the time we met, I didn’t need to know anymore.
He bought me my first calculator – a big clunky thing by today’s standards – for our first post-grad school Christmas.
Hope you avoid the lightning and thunder, OmAli!
Hahaha. OMG, if Mr. saw that, he would make a comment about yellowsnapdragon sounding the the teacher on the Charlie Brown cartoons. “Wha wha WHA wha wha.”
I’ve got a serious mental block against anything related to chemistry. It is the one subject that I seem completely unable or perhaps unwilling to comprehend.
Well, if it’s any consolation I learned very little in high school. Totally over my head. I learned much more sitting around the lab with my then-husband’s fellow students and just talking with them. One member of his group, in particular, was a natural teacher, and enjoyed explaining stuff, even to me. They were willing to explain concepts, leaving out all the math, which was what defeated me in high school.
Looks like flower abuse to me-who you gonna call?
You must be thinking of contons-you know, like they put in the Chinese soup. ;-)
It’s probably a good thing we can’t hear what they are saying.
