About Firedoglake
Mornin’, pups
Thanks, SD, can’t stay, going on a bird survey, so;
Off to see the Buzzard!
thanks for good company
When I saw the Munch up top I thought, “OMG something awful has happened” but I see the “awful” is just the day’s nooz.
Good morning SD and pups. Gorgeous warm sunny day here in NW Indiana and I have a list of outdoor chores, including a bike ride (not a chore).
Yes, but we must win that race.
Really, really strange.
Gotta double down. Europe is winning.
This is also pretty sickening:
France is in the same position we are, election-wise. We have a BADLY fractured country, mainly along religious lines. But also between the 1% and the rest of us and between races. We are also making our illegal immigrant problem seem much worse than it is and our jobs are rapidly moving to the areas with lowest labor costs.
Yet nobody seems to be worrying about pulling America together after then next election. If anything, the plan seems to be to split us further apart.
Boxturtle (Not part of that plan!)
Time for Pacto Grande!
Painting broke an auction record, though private sales for more have been recorded.
Confuses me. That painting is UGLY. If I owned it, it would be stored in the basement somewhere until the next community garage sale.
Boxturtle (To be fair, I love Dali yet he gives some people headaches)
From CNN’s report:
Now there’s a stellar example of your basic War-On-Drugs bullshit.
DEA: “About that guy who had to recycle his own urine: it was the Meth.”
I’ll just have a black coffee till my head stops spinning, doesn’t it feel like someone just threw another wet shovel full into the fan this week ?
Remind me to check your garage sales.
No shit. LOL
Somebody is going to get a Sternly Worded Letter!
Boxturtle (most likely whomever allowed this to become public)
Good morning, Dinerzens. So glad to see that The Scream brought a good price. Not many here know that I posed for that painting lol. Seriously, I grew up with that painting in a hallway in my house that separated my room from the rest of the living quarters, so I had to pass it at close quarters many times a day. Creeped me out each and every time. Still does.
this is why I suggest a specific kind of “non national” tariff
create a type of fee where companies rather then countries, who use slave or child labor, or pay lower then living wage, pay the commensurable difference in tariff
of instance, if france has 12 weeks of mandated vacation they would tariff any corporation that had fewer days, if america had a 40 hour work weeks we would tariff any corporation that had longer work weeks.
this I think is perfect, a non national corporate based tariff based on labor rights and income rather then the countries that allow it
this way, if a country allows child labor but the corporation does not and pays fair wages, they would not face the tariff as another corporation operating from the same country
I had just typed exactly the same thing and saw your comment before I hit “submit.”
Lawyer has filed suit for $20 million, but says that isn’t indicative of what he plans to sue for, just a pre-submission amount.
I wonder if the meth left in his cell was supposed to be entrapment?
Some have questioned why the painting resonates with so many people now. Because we’re all fucked. There should be a full-size cardboard cutout that we can all stick our face through and save the photo for our offspring — who are even more fucked.
There’s a video that’s been around for quite a while of a guy in a San Bernadino, CA police station who shoots himself with a Colt .45 in an interrogation room. Cops in the background at the end can be heard shouting about nobody searching the guy before they put him in the room.
You might find a valuable (but ugly) painting. However, in fairness I chech YOUR graage sales for collectables in my expertese and I’ve done quite well.
Bought a junk piano for $50 with perfect Ivory keys. An AUTHENTIC Iron Cross with diamond swords. A set of 5 Bert-carved Hobo nickels. And so on.
Boxturtle (one man’s trash is another man’s treasure)
We will keep that in mind when reading your comments. LOL
In fairness, it probably does explain a lot lol. ;-)
Today is Pete Seeger’s 93rd birthday.
Hippo Birdies 2 ewe
Hippo Birdies 2 ewe
I paid $10 for it.
inquiring minds want to know why they separated you from the rest of the household.
Here in Dayton, they cuffed and stuffed a fellow without searching him. When they got him to the station, he had his arms in front of him and a .25 automatic.
He said if he’d had another 30 seconds, that cop would have been DOA.
Boxturtle (Now there’s a plate in the back of the drivers seat.)
By 2024.
Number of years ago we had a dude shoot his 3-4yo with an SKS. 2 detectives put him in the car, cuffed in front. Had a cuff key on a neck chain. Got out of the cuffs, leaned over the seat, got the driver’s gun and shot both cops. Escaped, shot another cop who tried to pull him over. Ended up shooting himself in a standoff in a gas station north of Tampa. All people now cuffed behind and carrying a cuff key is now illegal.
Good for you! I sold the keys for $1000 to a professional pianist who promptly paid twice that to have them put in his Steinway.
Story: I collect coins. At a coin show, I saw an 1849 half cent prices at $400. If the coin was what the dealer labeled it, it was at most a $200 coin. But it was a small date proof. I paid the dealers price without haggling and sold it two tables down for $2500.
Found out later that the dealer was bragging to his neighbors about the suckerfish he’d caught with his overpriced half cent. The dealer i sold the coin to mentioned how happy I was with my purchase and how happy HE was that it was now in his case.
Until the day he died, the dealer who sold it to me never spoke to me. yet he made every cent he wanted off that piece!
Boxturtle (Some people just hate to be cherrypicked)
Illegal? Wow, I have a belt buckle from my misspent youth that has a pipe, a knife, and a cuff key built into the design.
Boxturtle (They had a similar one with a diamond dust cutting wire)
LOLOLOL Just lucky, I guess. ;-) Good morning, gw.
Good Morning.
Today in Charlotte, police have surrounded the Duke Energy building because protests are scheduled to take place on the sidewalks.
Trouble
Have you considered selling tickets to your basement and garage? I think I’d buy one.
The Dims must be really proud they picked BofA’s home state and hometown for their convention.
“Trouble . . . comes in the cutest packages.” ;-)
Power Companies == Electric Leeches.
off to walk with two of my neighbors. i’ll check back later.
That all gives me an idea, BT. Maybe FDL should have its own garage sale? Could raise funds, no? Or maybe not.
He did indeed. But he went on to say that the myth of the “bond vigilanties” is still alive and well.
In waiting for the confidence fairy, the Austerians were operating on hope. In cringing at the prospect of the bond vigilanties, they are operating on fear. Either way, they’re convinced that austerity is the best policy. Sigh!
I think France is more coherent than you think. The real fracture was the Revolution, which left its mark in division between Rilght and Left down to the 1960s. The situation now is more like the US in the 1980s, where the Socialist party is becoming like the Conservadems. I don’t think anyone seriously thinks Hollande can stand up to the Bankers any more than Clinton did. He will cave, the economy will crater, and Le Pen will grab ever growing numbers of working class voters in the next regional elections. The Socialists, like the Democrats, are deathly afraid of alienating the soft centrists, instead of trying to persuade them.
Well people aren’t buying houses. Maybe they’ll buy garages ?
Good morning, rc and pupses. Thanks, SD.
I’d buy a ticket to the Diner. You guys are killing me!
Yeah, Duke Energy is a biggie here too. However, from everything I am seeing and hearing about the bucking up and planning for the convention I suggest people stay away.
I have a “junk box” that spans four generations. It includes a couple dozen vacuum tubes (mostly rectifiers), a tube of 8080a microprocessors (8 bit), about 20ft of multistrand copper telephone cable, an entire box of switches, and I don’t know what’s in that bag at the very back.
Boxturtle (Don’t recall ever buying a screw or a nail)
What about Melenchon and the real leftists?
Oh yeah, the local right wing radio is going wild with the words “Marxist, Socialist, and Communist”. Must be all the interest in alternative economic models to keep people from starving to death.
TWOOPH!
That’s all ? {{goes through my closet. gets hit on foot with large power transformer. ouch…I really got to clean this thing out some day. }} Tain’t funny McGee.
Awwwww.
Mom said that the angriest she ever was with my brother Johnny and me was when we let the puppies into the house at Christmas. They pooped and tracked it all over the wrapped packages. I was too young to remember, or maybe just blocked it out of my mind, lol!
Gave Linda, my supervisor, a 15 minute intro to Marx yesterday. She’s now gonna watch Wolff’s intro course.
In some places, that would be grounds for dismissal.
Whoop! Go, SD.
Gotta go. Have a great day to Everyone!
Ubuntu’s Mark Shuttleworth on shaking up system software.
Interesting…
If it’s transformers you want, I have enough to recycle into a tank. Everybody throws those out and i can’t turn down electrical parts. If I listed everything, I’d probably have to pay inventory tax. And Osha would get me for all the two prong plugs I have.
But my transfomer leads are labeled. CORRECTLY! Are your’s?
Boxturtle (My dad made me do it to teach me how to use a voltmeter. Good lesson!)
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
US KIA Afghanistan: 1,958
Afghan, Iraki and Pakistani casualties: estimates vary to over 1.5M
US MBS 2012: 15,252 and counting
No war but class war
Where Have All the Flowers Gone?
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things
Namaste
Never. Give. Up.
Everything is labeled and sorted actually. In the correct boxes. Transformers from 6V -> 2800V. Variable caps from trimmers -> transmitting. Tubes, ICs, transistors, resisters, capacitors….etc.
are you sure he wasn’t telling you a story?
though I could be wrong, I do not believe keys are interchangeable between makers, steinway movement is more sophisticated then most other makers and I believe they would have proprietory fittings, hard to believe you could swap keys with another maker
Dang, and I thought i was a nitpicker! I still haven’t labeled most of my capacitors (seems like the ink wears off on the electroyltic cans), any of my transistors, or my coils.
Boxturtle (I have 5lbs of mixed precision resistors. Do you? :-) )
The keys are wood with pieces of ivory glued onto them. My dad had a baby grand Steinway with ivory keys and I’ve seen key repairs made. Easy to reshape an ivory keyface to fit.
Munch’s painting was one of the few really worth the $$$$$$.
It illustrates so clearly the last 3500 years ( more or much less) of “The Long Nightmare” ( James Joyce)
I doubt Munch himself realized he was painting patriarchy. He was kinda depressed……..
That’s all, I’ve gotta go deal with people who don’t do their jobs so I have to.
Plus, about half a tree fell into my driveway last night pretty much blocking it, so I have to get someone down here to cut it up and take ti away.
Gilda Radner was right!
This is pretty horrifying.
What the Hell Is Wrong with Arizona
He sent it back to the factory with a BIG check. They did the work and sent it back.
He says the ivory keys are “another world”.
Boxturtle (He could have bought a new piano for what he paid for those keys)
I have 7 large Plano boxes of sorted 1/4 and 1/2 watt resisters. {Oh I love playing electronics upsmanship. ;-) }
I’m not close enough to French politics to say (I only read Le Monde when I am in France, which won’t be until next month, but my impression is that he is too intellectual to grab the working class vote. Down to the 1990s, the Communists controlled the inner suburbs, and had an organization that did a pretty good job of getting out the vote. But the southern and western suburbs (some of which are only 10 minutes by RER to downtown Paris) have been increasingly taken over by middle class families. At one point in the mid 1990s I contemplated buying an early 19th-century housel in Ivry-sur-Seine (for a song), but we decided in the end to stay in Canada. The Communists were eventually driven out by the demographic shift, and lost their ability to mobilize the vote, which in any event was drifting away. Le Pen has picked up the biggest part of that drift.
Grrr…I have 4 7.2kv rectifying diodes, each capable of handling 500amps. They’re the size of soupcan’s and the cable is 1/2″ multistrand steel.
Boxturtle (See, if we were republicans, this would be between gun cabinets!)
Yeah, well I changed the two AA batteries in my thermostat without even calling an electrician.
You win!
Edvard Munch’s Painting Sells For $119.9 Million, Sets A World Record”
I wonder what Munch got paid?
Not a Steinway. At least, the reasonably sized ones (Steinway “B” for a decent sound)
Good morning, sweetest one. Hope you’re having a great time down there mit der fambly. I just walked all the way around the block, so I’m making a great recovery. Gonna risk bringing Riley next time. Remember to watch out for the dark shadows in the water, darlin’. Love ya.
God said, “Edvard, well done!”
Now give me something more upbeat, yah?
I hope He left some loaves and fishes!
My oh my! Romance on the FDL blogs!
How delightful!
I can tell a two-prong plug froma three-prong plug. That is just about the full extent of my electrical competence.
HAHAHAHAHA….You win ! :-D
Is this movie called “Dueling Resisters”?
Envy is a deadly sin lol.
I could use a soldering gun before I could ride a bike. I was such a geek, the bullies had to work out a schedule between them to decide who could beat on me when.
Boxturtle (Radio Shack’s 100-in-1 hobby board was my favorite toy of all time)
WaHoo! *does happy dance*
Boxturtle (Still jealous about those sorted boxes of resistors. I’m using a lunch sack for mine)
I was able to switch out the light fixture in front over the garage door by asking my next door neighbor to do it! He’s a retired engineer and I’m terrified of electricity. I’m very good at turning lights on and off, changing batteries and changing lightbulbs. And that’s where it ends.
It’s not a movie. I guess technically, it’s a p***ing contest.
Boxturtle (Good thing NOTHING is off topic in the Diner!)
I was already trying to figure who the director and lead actors would be. /s
reminds me of my childhood protege days, my parents got me a beutiful baby grand “sterling” piano, this thing had such nice wood and carings
the keys on this sterling according to my teacher had better movement then most steinway’s she’d played
wish i had that back now, specially since you said that bout the keys
You should not fear electricity, but you MUST respect it. Frying in your own fat is a slow process.
Boxturtle (Rule #1: Find and secure the breaker box)
LOL, don’t get me started on bully stories. BTW, looks to me like the market just took a key pivot in our direction. You still short?
And never sit on a Tesla coil!!!
rc…HEY…long time.
I’m with ya in the fear of electricity. Mr is always working on wires, tweaking this and rerunning that. At the end of the work, he always asks me to plug it in. As if.
oh, my respect for electricity knows no bounds! i believe my breaker box is secured to the garage wall. hah! i bet that’s not what you meant by “secure the breaker box”.
Yes, still short. But nervious about it. Too many politicians running for re-election to assume that market forces will control.
Boxturtle (Worst beating I ever got was from stealing a bully’s girlfriend by being nice to her)
A well placed soldering iron would have ended that foolishness. We geeks rule the world now.
We share a similar history. I was licensed to run any AM/FM radio station long before the State of Illinois would allow it (Child labor laws concerning dangerous equipment). I would wow the onlookers by lighting up a florescent tube just holding it near an antenna which was transmitting. In fact, that’s how I tuned it up to peak power!
I have one lonely 811 transmitting tube as a memoir.
Nah! just back the bully into said antenna!
Seen way too many electricians shocked because some fool happens to notice and thinks “Why is this switch off?”. First thing I do is either kill the entire circuit or put a switch cover over the switch.
Boxturtle (then I know if I get shocked its intentional and my sister did it)
One of Tektronix star engineers was killed under his house messing with a live wire.
Me, the only live wire I mess with has two legs and is cute!
I did have my moments of revenge. In the day, the car audio was IMPORTANT social capital. I grounded Bully’s antenna to the chassis, he couldn’t even receive the local superpower station.
Boxturtle (and to receive that, I think all you needed was a loose filling!)
when my neighbor changed the fixture for me, he found the right breaker switch, turned it off and put masking tape over that switch.
I probably would have pushed a stick pin into a filter cap and cut it off so’s not to be able to find it. Especially good if the cap was a wax version!
“learn to be nice to geeks and nerds. Odds are, you’ll end up working for one” – Unknown
Boxturtle (I wish I had that quote in High School.Well, maybe not. Bulies have no sense of humor)
Lol. Shoulda peed on his engine block while you were at it.
Heathkit.
;o)
I could never afford one when I was a kid, so everything was cobbled from old radios; the Shortwave versions were rebuilt and spiffed up a bit.
I’ve made a few heathkit’s in my time. My voltmeter is a heathkit from Jr High. But heath always felt you should pay extra for the privilege of building a kit, so I didn’t do much business with them.
Boxturtle (And you get two geek points for mentioning them)
Goddam, boy, I was just thinking about you last night, and how much I have missed you and your wit. How are things out there? I guess you know I’m recovering from surgery, and doing it fairly well.
“As if.” LOLOLOL
built them with my dad. then did my own as employed adult. just did heathkit.com and huge list of topics including fibre optics. will have to explore there.
Yeah, I’m nervous too, and share your concern. But, OTOH, every major top makes you sweat blood before it becomes clear that you were right. It feels to me like something changed the last day or two, for the weaker. I guess we’ll see.
Whoa…one of myy fave 60′s songs. In fact I chose it for my solo iin high school for my choral class grade.
Lots of bad news today. I ‘m horrified by what happenedon competence. Sigh. to Daniel Chung. Humanity seems to have disappearrd from so much law enforcement. Not to mention competence.
Sigh.
Fighting Verizon’s wireless broadband quirks in Chicago. Posted two days reports from Chicago (Apr 28 and 29) yesterday on tarheeldem.posterous.com
Working on catching up with April 30 and Chicago May Day. Will post a diary on Chicago May Day at MyFDL as soon as I process all the information I have on it.
A little lull now until the People’s Summit on Apr 12-13
I got one of those for christmas one year. Built all the stuff that day. My favorite present though was a big box of electronic and radio parts I got from my grandfather. he may have payed 2 bucks for it at a surplus store in Phillie, but I loved it. All that stuff. :-)
I has two 813s. For an HF amp I’m gonna build. Have one amp that uses two 572Bs.
thanks for the points, BT. at the time, 1950′s, heathkits had “more power” and features than comparable off-the-shelf audio equipment. still have the two 12″ Jenson spkrs from the guitar amplifier i built.
dad had a wire recorder, then to tape — he made friends with detroit fm radio station guy that would play his requests to record in early a.m.
my ultimate recorder was TRW RT-360 12″ reel to reel in the 1960s. real (reel) mess if you bumped one of the reels w/o noticing.
lol
Heathkit still around? Wow…memories..my 1st DH loved Heathkits.
love that peeps here are talking about them! Wanna hang out but gotta go back to work. Laters, pups.
I believe that 811′s and 572B’s are interchangeable.
I have to go fix a guy’s computer.
Who’d a thunk in 1955 that I would be doing this?
Oh, I do have one throwback to at least 1970′s: A Tektronix 465 scope that doesn’t work. Man the sweat you have to go through to find the problem and fix it.
Maybe
throwawayrecyclable circuit boards have their advantages!572bs can take a wee bit more anode voltage than 811As.
((TD)) Our man on the scene!!
I’m out, guys, gonna try my first foray into the big, bad Hotlanta freeway system to visit my bud. Hopefully, y’all won’t be seein’ me on the nooz. A great day to all.
btw, what is “Woody Allenesque typeface?”
sounds kinda fun.
11pm – SD – guess what? Smoodgie is — on my bed! Has been for at least 3 hours!
I brought her in because the landlord was here showing the next door apartment, and she was hanging on the patio (when I got home from work). She tried scrabbling at the door, so I carried her into the living room and set her on the sofa beside me. Calmed her a bit. After a few episodes of trying to get out the closed sliding doors, she headed into the bedroom on her own, eventually turning up on the bed.Surprise! I’ve opened thedoor to feed Big Boy, and she hasn’t come running, so I guess she’s spending the night! Whaddya know?
