Mornin’, pups
G’Morning, SD.
But, I don’t want to be pissed off.
We were talking about the Tea Party here at my house the other day, and for me, the photo of the woman with the sign saying, I don’t want to push “1″ for English stands out as their signature image.
Thanks, SD, seems the oligarchs in the Middle East are making a stand to avoid working for a living – as they still have tight hold of the reins, this is a second front for the populace. Don’t let go, folks.

Good morning everyone.

I’m wondering what the guv plans to do about that increase in need that was realized by those who voted for those funds in the first place.
Maybe more neighborhood watch dawgs?
Good Morning, Mr. Canyon. Hope all is well with you and yours.
Wonderful use of those signs indicating a safe place, just don’t peek to see where the armaments are kept.

Good morning demi.
Good weather, good friends at the Diner, what could be better? How are you doing now that life has settled a little bit for you with the moving in and moving out. I hope it is very good for you.
Good Morning everyone,
Thanks SD, sorryO not quite doing the best he can to destroy public education. Haven’t the 1% put it out of reach for many with the price of attending college and now needing a masters or a doctorate to get on anyone’s hiring list?
Charity is a structural feature of capitalism, that is fo sho. I’ve seen that quote attributed to a few people, including Oscar Romero.
Last year, there was a tea party protest near me where someone had that sign. I told him “No problem. Just learn spanish and then you can press “ocho”. ”
My suggestion was not well received.

I’m sure he had more important things to spend money on. Like tax cuts. I do wonder how some of these folks sleep at nights

Hey pupses and thanks, SD. Just a quick hi and wanted to say that wendydavis has a great diary up at myFDL about TarheelDem and his upcoming trip to Chicago to protest at the NATO Summit. If you are interested in helping out with a donation, here is the place :)
Also, you may not know that rc is having surgery this afternoon due to complications from emergency abdominal surgery last week. He is likely to be in for a lengthy and tough recovery period but he misses you guys and hopes to be back soon. If you can send some good healing thoughts his way I know they would be be welcomed.
See you pupses soon and have a good day, everypup :)
edit: let me try the WePay link again…WePay
Things are much quieter and a little more peaceful, that’s for sure. We took the opportunity to do some refurbishing while the rooms were being re-shuffled. Painted walls, shampooed carpets, that sort of thing. So, the mister has a whole new beautiful office, which he deserves.
Garden’s coming right along. Tomatoes are starting to get those yellow blossoms of hope.

Obama is not destroying public education, but he’s sure not doing much to save it. Public Education is being destroyed by people unwilling to pay to educate others children and by people unwilling to put enough time into their own children.

Good morning, Dinerzens! Sun is shining and I hope it’s going to be less windy. I didn’t bike ride yesterday because Sunday I rode and was miserable in the cold and wind.
That “hat” cartoon is a hoot!
I guess I have been a way for quite a while, painting, shampooing, new office space wow.
Now I am really jealous about those tomato plants blooming with the yellow buds already. “g”
The weather is getting better again in this area. 80′s in March and a lot colder in April. I had to cover up some of the blossoming bushes to protect them from the frost the past few nights.
Looking at the positive and not complaining, i could be in Pennsylvania and New York and dealing with snow. That has got to be heartwrenching for those folks looking forward to Spring.
Will keep my fingers crossed for him. Keep us informed.
Boxturtle (Is there a meatspace addy to send a card, maybe?)
I’m a dyed in the wool Cheech Wizard fanatic.
There has been little effort to keep college costs down, either. Even the better public institutions are way out of reach for some middle class families. How do we expect people to work and prosper if education is unaffordable?
I had never heard of Cheech Wizard. I thought it was something related to Cheech & Chong. Very clever animation!
Frost is a nasty surprise. Here, we’ve stayed above it but chilled down, but yes, NW PA had snow, but it’s melting now and in spudtruckowner’s area did not get so heavy as to break trees and cut off power.
That’s what debt is for! You need to study harder at the Catechism of the lenders.
Oh, si.
Thinking also about the current dialogue about individual’s rights. Keep thinking about what Spock said about the Needs of the one being outweighed needs of the one.
Thanks BoxT, Good Morning
I put it on him for the reasons you mention, I guess, but there is also O’s buddy Arnie Duncecan squawking the privatization message, too. Just sat back down here after making sure the my teen had her homework with her.
Cheech Wizard. National Lampoon. I went to one of the first ComicCon’s. Held in San Diego it featured a presentation by Vaughn Bode, Cheech’s creator. Sadly Bode committed suicide a week or 2 before the Convention. His brother Mark, who did the video, gave the presentation in his place.
I did not see the news last night so that is good to hear about spudtruckowner’s area. I can live with the frost surprise, but being without power, yuck!!!
Our power lines here are underground, but the power substations can be worrisome from time to time.
No effort to reduce post high school costs and in fact the movement is all the other direction.
In todays world, public education should extend to at least an asscoiates degree and preferably through a full 4 year degree. Even fast food will hesitate to hire someone without at least a GED anymore.
I would cheerfully pay more taxes to support education, as long as none of the money went to sports programs.

We are ear deep in filing financial aid forms for college starting in September for Sonny. My daughter has it all figured out. 5% government loan…not due to start being paid off until he graduates.
It’s crazy-making, thinking about the loan and the debt for him, but, he deserves a good education.
Ouch, how sad is that. Hope you enjoyed the meeting. Must have felt “overshadowed”….RIP
That’s not a bad rate at all, and payoff terms are very flexible. Hope he can go smoothly through, too. Too many young people are sold ‘guarantees’ programs that do not lead to real work, and having you to help out is very important.
Hi, all. Appropriate good thoughts to all who need them. Our group has to be supportive.
I don’t want to get started on ed matters this morning, but it is good to see the push back against those set to destroy public ed and put college out of reach for most. Our leadership at all levels is sadly lacking in those who have the power to reduce the effects and the reach of the testing. I’ll stop now before I fly off the handle.
Puppy therapy helps veterans heal themselves
My daughter figured that he might be paying about $250 a month to pay back that loan, which seems doable. Then, I imagine the next step will probably be figuring out the cost of the next degree.
My daughter, btw, turns in her final paper tomorrow for her Master’s.
Good Morning,
Not tryiig to be a wet blanket, I am thinking that you already know this, but student loans are the only loans that cannot be dismissed (if that is the proper word) in bankruptcy proceedings.
Honestly, it seems that rapaciousness is more to blame than intent to destroy education. Trying to privatize and make money off what should be socially responsible services is much like speculation in food commodities, it’s an ignorance of what they’re doing more than intentional evil, imho.
I’m sure you saw it, but last week I saw a story about rescue cats helping prisoners.
Congratulations! what a long way to progress. This is good news all around.
That’s very cool.
They’ll have to pry my home from my dog’s teeth.
Oh, heck. It is what it is.
I did see that.

Thank you. It’s comforting to know that I must have done Something right.
I know that a lot of you have followed sonny’s progress through the Aspherger challenges and I sincerely appreciate all of the support and empathy I’ve received from friends here.
To reiterate what SD always says…Never Give Up.
My first grandchild is off to college in the fall — somewhere. He wants music (his love) and sound engineering (“I have to be able to find a job”). He was accepted to a very prestigious college, Berklee in Boston, but they offer no scholarships at all, and my son simply cannot afford it. He is waiting to hear from Ball State, which is very good and affordable, but he’s wait-listed. They’re on pins and needles. I can’t afford to help, or I would.
EDIT: I could perhaps help with the first grandchild, but I have 8, and the money wouldn’t last when I also have to live on it.
My congratulations to your daughter and of course to you. Big news. Field of endeavor for her?
Congrats to her! that’s quite an accomplishment!
Boxturtle (Anything I never achieved is “quite an accomplishment”)
Hoping that works out, my son was wait-listed but accepted, since so many drop off that first round of selections. Honors graduate, in the end.
Nice assessment Ruth, good morning, I’m more of the mind set that so many people have taken un”Mitt”igated (there’s my first creative act of the morning) greed off the list of the seven deadliest.
I’m sure you would. Keeping a good thought for Ball state, then.
The loans would cover tuition. We’ll all be chipping in for on-campus living, books, food, etc. Plus, he’ll get an on-campus job. His recent part time work at a walgreens and his volunteering in the Kitchen at Mend should help him get that. Plus, he’s a hard worker and a really nice person.
You must be a proud grandma, Molly.
Congrats to your daughter, and to your son for persevering despite Asperger’s. I think you must have mentioned it, but where has he decided to go? Wasn’t he looking at a couple of places?
Sadly, having media unwilling to correct misstatements such as the principle of trickle down economics is part of the whole problem, makes a public that does take immorality as a norm because the high officials preach it.
It’s the intent to destroy public education that is at issue, as you know. In this regard, those who claim to want to “reform” public education at all levels can do more damage than those who want to privatize it. The current austerity obsession has Ds as well as Rs looking to cut it wherever possible.
There is now a bipartisan attack on public education. IMHO.
Her undergrad degree was Poly Sci, but the M.D. is in Communications. She is the communications manager for a consumer federation group. Her father is acting director for LA County Consumer Affairs and she volunteered there when she was in jr. college.
Thanks!
He is extremely bright, but hasn’t been as diligent about grades as he should have been. His passion is music, where he shines. So a couple of D grades has hurt, plus somehow a screwup resulted in his high SAT scores not being sent. He’s made up one of the D grades with an online course, and the SAT scores have been sent now, and we’re all just waiting. He was accepted at IU but not into the Jacob Music School, which is extremely selective and would have been his second choice.
Public colleges were also not as tough to get into when my kids were attending. Both had decent grades and test scores, both got into Purdue without a problem. And it was a LOT cheaper than it is now.

Cal Poly Pomona. About an hour and a half away. So, close enough. But, he’ll have the full on college experience.
That destroying public education results requires a certain amount of basic hatred for freedom of opportunity, and class warfare, but as far as I can see is not recognized by those who want to destroy the educational system primary to their belief that private profit is the ultimate good. So I disagree. As we do sometimes.
Thanks SD and thanks everyone for your chiming in. I have set up a schedule (not my strong suit) and have been trying to allot a certain number of hours each day to specific tasks, besides following blogs. I even have a couple of hours booked today to perform some income producing functions. A rare commodity recently.
Be well, be good.
Everything was doable such a short time back, sadly for our future as a country.
Be excellent. Be happy.
Income is good! Schedules, not so much. LOL.
Last spring my youngest finished his higher education. That ended a run of 20 straight years of college expenses for my family. Towards the end I was considering changing my handle to just “old.”
It was remarkable how over this 20 year span the costs rose.
Best money we ever invested.
I agree wholeheartedly. Several ‘reforms’ that would hurt are merit pay, more testing, linking outside test scores to teacher pay with no mitigating factors, and destroying the unions. There are other ways also.
One of the silliest ways to measure US education is to compare our results to Finland. Again, I won’t get wound up.
Good going, pop. It is pop, isn’t it? (I should probably know by now, not that it really matters.)
Got things that must be done, such as driving a trunkload of clothes I’ve cleaned out of this place, over to the Crisis Shelter.
Thanks for the good company.
Good company in deed.
Congratulations on Lightening your load.
I love how we all inspire and encourage each other.
More painting for me today. Enjoy your day, Ruth.
I don’t mind merit pay, from my school days I remember quite a few teachers who should have been paid a premium.
But linking to test scores in any way is bogus, since those tests are largely bogus and we’ve already seen that a school district will consipre to cheat the system if their jobs & pay depend upon it. If you MUST use tests, use the ACT or SAT scores.
Boxturtle (Of course, the ACT and SAT are biased against creationism)
morning all. are you speaking with him omali? what was the original surgery for?

Thanks for your updates, TarheelDem.
Maybe there are other pups heading to Chicago who you could carpool with?
Best of luck with that.
Any news on realitychecker this morning? Nevermind, saw Om’s comment up thread. *positive healing thoughts for rc*
Good morning folks. Apologies, but I haven’t even looked at the menu – just wanted to catch OmAli’s confirmation of Wendy’s posting on the TarheelDem in Chicago diary. (Wow, don’t we feel a bit like the Almighty at times catching all these interlocking movements and disturbances of the continuum? Well, maybe not the Almighty – how about Tolstoy instead?)
It’s amazing to me that human interactions even as disjointed and sometimes frazzled as the ones we can have on a forum such as this, divorced from any physical contact, still forge the bonds of concern and empathy. I do hope and pray for health and safety for both our warriors, realitychecker in particular today. Going to light my chapel candle right now. I’ll be back later to read. Please do update us.

Ok,, biased alumna here, but. Ball St but not IUB? Surely. Best music school in Iindiana? Or no sound engineering?
ssorry Msmolly, I can ‘t resist!
Oops just saw this post. Never mind.
BoxTurtle, there are several problems with merit pay in teaching. For one thing, there is no really good way to set objective measures. If you base it on standardized tests, there are many ways to jigger the numbers; who assigns the students to your class and what students are assigned are two important inputs. Second, a really good way to improve teaching is what is called professional learning communities (PLCs) where teachers collaborate on their best practices in the classroom. Merit pay would detract from that as each really good teacher would be disinclined to share, while those that feel less confidence would want to see the best. I’m sure that if you think about it you can see other problems, such as cheating by teachers.
BTW, I couldn’t watch Dean Baker because the video kept breaking up.
Try this YouTube link. Baker’s webcam isn’t very good.
Just wwanted to Add that I ‘m hoping if Hollands wins Frrance will back off austerity, gtheir economy will promptly recover, and the rest of Europe might get the message.
Also, sending healing thoughts to RC. (Human one not wmd ‘s feline one) .
We’re gonna find out just what kind of Socialist Mr Hollande is. I ain’t holdin’ my breath.
I’m not either. Francois Mitterand was no lefty hero. ‘Course anyone is better than our own GW Bush, so people who live in glass countries shouldn’t throw stones.
I was hoping Melechon would have had a better showing. If he’d beaten Hollande out the reichwingers would be shittin’ their pants.
What were his numbers, anyway? Stinks that no modern industrial nation is willing to touch any real reform after we’ve seen corporate capitalism fail so badly.
Aargh! The typos from the Kindle Fire are so horrible I decided to throw caution to the wind and use the firm laptop this time.
So true, ysd.
SD, am I wrong that Hollande at least has been saying he’ll end the austerity measures, or was that Melechon?
After all, you don’t have to be a Socialist, even, to see tha austerity ain’t working. I’m even hearing on msm business news shows (well, pri, like Marketplace, downright commie compared to say cnbc) observing that austerity is having “the opposite effect from that intended.” Huh! Who would’ve thunk it?
Paul Krugman remains the crier in the wilderness about austerity in the mainstream…I don’t wanna hear “but he’s really just a conventional tool” — he has been screaming as loud as he could that everything being done in “Yurp” is ass-backwards. And he gets plenty of trolls to his columns for doing so.
Well, back to work. Nonquixote, I so understand about setting up schedules. I tried to do that when I was unemployed…failed most of the time. Hard even while employed, though it’s necessary.
He and Le Pen the reichwinger both had about 18%.
Hollande said he wasn’t going to go along with austerity. Sets up a battle royale between he and Merkel if he wins. We’ll see.
Krugman has a long piece in the New York Magazine on The Ben Bernanke.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/29/magazine/chairman-bernanke-should-listen-to-professor-bernanke.html
Well, from here I guess we can but hope.
I knew you had a new “device” that was giving you fits, and in response to a comment from SD yesterday I posted instructions for turning off autocorrect — on an iPhone or iPad. Don’t know about a Kindle Fire, but I would guess it would be in a similar location in the settings menus. I’m sure there’s a way to turn it off.
I can ask my son-in-law, if you like. He knows the Fire pretty well. But that won’t help your typing!
Why is it that our media will report that Le Pen got about 20 percent of the vote, but they will not report that the socialist got almost as many votes? That’s rhetorical.
AHA!
Disable spelling autocorrect on your Kindle Fire
This sounds cynical, but… Epic battles of that stripe have had similar results over the last 40 years, and they’ve not been good for lefties. Just sayin.
