About Firedoglake
Thanks, SD, is this Good Friday or Black Friday? Never have been sure. Giving cocoa to the natives to chew makes then work harder while spending less effort growing food. Always big with slave traders.
Good morning SouthernDragon, Ruth, and all firepups yet to arrive this morning.
Ruth, did you get your camping accomplished?
Morning SD and fellow travelers. Republican commemoration of Good Friday? Nailing the poor to the cross.
Mornin’ all!
Good morning all.
That humanitarian intervention in Libya is going mighty well. I’m impressed.
Mornin’, pups
Hi, Popeye
G’Morning, SD Et All
Thanks for the Big Cats.
Is anyone else making deviled eggs this weekend?
Good morning diners,
Logic and religion, My first argument with the leaders “Three days and nights “from Noon on Friday gets you a Noon time Monday Easter. So it didn’t happen that way or Jesus was a Liar, Crickets and bunny rabbits .
Thanks for asking, it was too wet and mucky, but I took some pictures down at the Lake;
https://picasaweb.google.com/RCalvo8/RandomPictures#5727850017731321906
and saw great artifacts.
CIA trained MEK. democracynow citing Sy Hersh.
Deviled eggs, I love ‘em!
Morning demi.
Gambling for the robes is a big part of that.
Hot cross buns too.
What a beautiful picture!
No, but we are coloring a couple dozen easter eggs this PM.
I’m glad the kids still get into it.
Morning SD, pups.
Good morning Popeye. Thinking of you and hope you can join us sometime sooooooon.
Thanks, bluebonnets do good poses. Always love them, and think this will be one of their last stands, as TX weather dries up.
Good. Morning. Mr. Canyon.
I think most people like ‘em. Nummy.
Always dye the eggs, my mom would be sad if there were no colored ones.
It’s a fun activity. It helps that you still have a Peanut at home. :)
Why eggs are associated with Easter & Passover. Hens’ laying associated with hours of daylight, so picks up in spring.
Good morning, pupses, and thank you SD.
Ruth, your photos make me really sad that I never made it to the Museum of the Red River. I never knew about it when we lived in OK.
Good morning everyone!
Hiya Popeye. *waves*
Belated happy birthday to nonquixote! Sorry we missed your obscure reference to a “new year” yesterday.
More maypoles!
It’s pretty new, actually, funded after the OK state dinosaur was dug up and completed. Wonderful collections, already bursting at the seams.
Glad you caught that,
Happy Bird Day, nonquixote!
Hey popeye :)
nonqui…happy late birt’day….now I remember that you and demi are only a week apart….dang!
When I was young, we always had a fesitival in May where we made Maypoles, but it was just a dance. They didn’t really tell us the significance of the festival.
I’m going to go check it out on the googlez. Has spud had a chance to see it?
Hippo Birdies to you, Nonquixote.
(Nonny-Non)
White Plains cop union blasted Juan Gonzales for releasing name of cop who murdered Kenneth Chamberlain Sr.
Oestrus = Easter. Happy fertility rite!
Happy belated birthday, nonquixote
I hope we haven’t embarrased our garlic-smelling Friend from the North.
Nonquixote, just take a bow, sir.
I didn’t catch it. I emailed him last night after Demi tipped me off, and he mentioned it in his reply.
Hopefully he’ll join us this morning and we can sing Happy Birthday. Or maybe as Suzanne does, Hippo Birdie two ewe. And mini s’mores.
He’s enjoying the pictures for now, we’ll need to get there when he comes out here later, especially since he makes and demonstrates atlatls, does exhibits of arrowheads/points and throwing.
The museum is having a kite festival! Does anyone else remember making or flying kites?
Victor Bout sentencing next segment on democracynow. Convicted of terrorism, not arms trafficking to protect all the usual suspects (U.S. puppet dictators who bought arms from him).
Good morning all. Thanks SD.
Happy belated Birthday nonquixote.
Hello popeye.
I haven’t had to worry about fertility for quite a bit, myself, personally, but all this War On Women is reminding me that I still know women who do.
Fertility, right?
I remember the Art Saturday the two of you hosted. He has quite a collection, as well.
I do, I do. Still love to fly ‘em. Beach is wonderful for kite fliers.
We still usually take kites along when we go camping. And, with all of the great outdoors, usually one comes crashing down onto the food on the table, or worse in a frying pan on the fire.
We did too. Out in very republican NE Ohio, no less. HA
Adorable. Are you going to put the shot up with the rabbit and the chicken?
I saw some great kites when Audry and I rented a little beach house last summer. They make sounds, now, and are so much more sophisticated that what we could buy back then. Or make, certainly :)
LOL! Flambe of kite.
I do. Built one from scratch. Not a kit. Big…about 4ft tall. Worked great.
May have been a tradition that people from Europe brought over to the midwest, and then those folks moved to California. Dunno, just thinking.
Morning SD & Pupses…
Dig those beautiful kittehs…
Bout worked with USG during Iraq war.
Remember how critical the tail of the kite was? We were endlessly tweaking how many strips of cloth to tie.
You worry about the kids’ fertility, rite? (sorry, cannot resist bad jokes)
Got it. Also have a bear with a set of bunny ears, favorite.
Could be. Lot’s of German and Scandinavians in that area at that time. This was in elementary school.
That is so neat. Balsa wood, I guess? Was it a box kite? I never mastered those….
Where in Ohio? My grandparents were in the Canton/Akron area.
Have you read any of the Jesus Seminar stuff?
When I attended the Unitarian Universalist church back in the ’90s we had a speaker from the Jesus Seminar once, and it was fascinating. The historical Jesus rather than the Biblical Jesus.
Oh yes. And the ratio of height to width too.
Geauga county. NE of Cleveland. Did the kite at my grandparents outside Phillie. Lower Bucks County. Friend had the huge field near by to fly it in.
Yes, with scorched tail.
(Look, mom! Look, look.)
Nonfarm payroll employment rose a less than expected 120,000 in March; unemployment rate little changed at 8.2%. January’s gain was revised down a bit; February’s up a bit.
And speaking of Jamie Dimon (and one of his JPMC cronies, Blythe Masters…)
Oh, ja. That’s eggzakitcally what I’m talking about.
Was busy listening to Bill Black’s take on the JOBS act…and then aligne this, http://www.blackagendareport.com/content/honor-dr-king-and-real-black-history-oppose-obama%E2%80%99s-wars, to it.
I thought the maypole was a pagan ritual…but I could easily be misremembering.
Witnesses against Bout were cocaine traffickers that USG paid $8 million, amnesty, and resettlement of their families in U.S.
No, I’m not worrying. I’m not, I’m not.
Wow, small world. My parents’ families were from Dover, New Philadelphia, Akron, Canton, etc. My dad was born in Gnadenhutten.
Anybody who thinks Bibi is bluffing is living in a dream world. Bibi has his own worldview, much like BushCo, and he’s not going to drop it simply because of facts.
But if Iran’s missles are really that accurate per the story, then all bets are off. If you nuke three cities, Iran is effectively gone and Bibi knows that and that might be his goal. Likewise, Iran might have the rockets to flatten Tel Aviv, Haifa, and West Jerusalam and Israel will have real trouble recovering from that.
Boxturtle (I say we put Bibi and a cleric of Irans choice in the street and let them throw rocks at each other)
I never mastered the box kite either. I’ve still got a 40yo kite book. Great designs. The Japanese and Chinese are masters at makin’ and flyin’ ‘em.
Bahrain documentary maker from al Jaz up next on democracynow.
I’ve read and seen some videos. I think it’s pretty interesting. I’ll take the historical over the bibical. But, that’s just me.
It is, goes back to the Druids.
Kites or Maypolls ?
heh, maypoles.
Yes, that’s the part they didn’t tell us about. They didn’t want to corrupt those sweet little girlscouts.
Like all church activities, we borrowed it.
Remember The Kite Runner?
They just told us it was a celebration of May or something.
I just remember something about “Christ is Risen” that posited that his followers removed his body from the tomb and took it away somewhere, and the whole “risen” thing followed from people who discovered the body was gone.
It is a very vague memory. The Jesus Seminar has published a lot of their conclusions, and one of these days I may get a few to read.
But, they did let us wear pretty dance dresses and make flower crowns for out heads. (They just didn’t tell us why we were all purtied up.)
The UU church I belonged to in Cincinnati had a maypole ritual in the spring, and they said it was pagan, I thought. Glad to know I remembered correctly.
You gotta look nice when they pitch you into the volcano!
Sacre du Printemps!
Heh, can’t resist now.
Sounds like a pipedream to me.
Bahrain protested release of Shouting in the Dark to govt of Qatar.
How are we going to create 5.3 million fast food and Walmart jobs in 2 years ?
Oh, I remember that. Haven’t read it or seen the movie, however.
Okay, last Friday, I think it was you who said Another day older and deeper in debt. (Sorry, if it was someone else and I forgot.) That made me think of Eric Burdon’s version of that song in Joe and the Volcano.
You got the identity theft memo. (Bunnies don’t lay eggs.)
Anyone see this JOBS act as anything else but Obama continuing Reagan’s (Obama’s BFF)trickling-down economics (Reagan had a prostate problem?), with Obama pissin’ in our eyes, and calling it ‘showers of blessing’?
Govt of Bahrain destroyed 35 Shia mosques.
eCAHN sent it to me. Some great pix.
Often mention the company store, which is close, but may have been some one else.
We’ve officially made the decision to … wait. So, if it takes longer, it just takes longer.
Have to wait for the savvy businessmen to create jobs. (Government doesn’t create jobs.)

Prof Wolff’s site is back to its previous layout. The Advanced course can be found under Online Courses.
I thought that was Tennessee Ernie Ford ?
I read it, didn’t see the film.
Lots of good links this morning. Looking forward to reading and watching.
What was the filling in the Big Cat eggs, do you think? Those looked like some happy critters.
I think he was the original. His family went to my church and sometimes he would sing too. Really nice man as I recall.
He got it from the MOTU. And some miners.
It is clear the money changers still own the “People’s House,” just as Christ expressed his anger at the money changers in his father’s house. Policy makers who enslave future generations to antiquated business models which no longer provide value to the 99% but protect the profits of the 1% or worse the 1/10 of the one percent, enslave America, a sad reality for Americans today. Maybe, just maybe, the $billion$ dollars of economic value wasted out America’s tailpipes today could be put to a more beneficial use, as America will waste .80 cents of most dollars, spent on gasoline today. No servitude here Mr. Scott? America needs a rebirth in more ways than one! “Life,” not Servitude!
Happy Easter / Passover, to all……
I too read the book but was too much of a fraidy pants to watch the movie. Pretty brutal stuff.
Doing the same thing over and over and over again expecting different results. The elites count on the people having short memories and of course the corporate media guarantees just that.
Good morning, folks.
It really was.
Back before Everything Changed, courtesy of that (insert your own words) George Bush, I really wanted to visit Afghanistan. Seems like a different lifetime to me.
Really is a different lifetime for the Afghans, those that still have their lives.
Zandi: A lot more jobs being created than these numbers show.
Should have added /s.
Okay, since Dragon didn’t post this, I will.
That’s how easter eggs are made.
Catnip. Jumanji’s reaction was the neatest. Them iz some big teeth.
Good morning, ThD.
Are you dyeing eggs at your house this weekend?
Where about’s in my backyard, LBC ?
Why is that mean bunny biting that chicken’s neck, mommy?
You mean that eventually the big money going to the corporate individuals doesn’t mean JOBs? Pharisee!
Ha. You tell me, don’t the kids who are raised on farms and with animals learn about the birds and the bees that way?
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.

that and more deregulation. Deregulation has become a religion in the Bubble along with the “magic of the market”
A drunk doing the same thing over and over expecting different result, is delusional. The only time the result is different from the “normal acceptable dysfunction,” is when the drunk dies? The proper term really is, “substance abuser.” Congress refuses to dealt with the real issue gutting the republic, and instead protects the dysfunction, just as Congress and the “SJC” protected the institution of slavery.
You might throw in Drill, baby, Drill, but it’s sorta the same thing.
I think I told you I was raised in Horse Country and one of the neighbors took her daughter and me to watch several horses getting bred at a local stable. I was maybe 10. Yikes! Those horses were so tall and so big. I remember my mom wasn’t very happy about that lesson. Ha. Too bad for her. Oh, and the neighbor was from Holland. Much more earthy than my mom.
If Iran’s missiles are as accurate as reported….
Iran likely does not position its missiles near cities. It would not take many missiles to destroy a land area equivalent to 40 miles by 20 miles. Without nukes. If Bibi doesn’t understand that, he is indeed looney. And Patriot missiles are not going to save him.
I still think it’s chest-beating. But in Bibi’s case it could also be a way of meddling in the US election if he actually does something. It wouldn’t be the first time that Republicans used their relationships with a foreign government as an electoral weapon.
Saw on the news that there’s a seder tonight at the WH. Proving once again that the illegal preznit is a secret muslim – very deep secret. Will there be an egg roll with eggrolls next?
Feasterville. Off of Bustleton Pike.
You are on a roll this morning, Ruth. And, I’m ROFL.
Decided I wanted a 3 day weekend and called in well. heh
Not dyeing eggs. My wife will be playing Paulette the bunny at her part-time job at Build-a-Bear however.
Springtime rites make me giddy.
Again? Isn’t that twice in two weeks??? LOL.
One thing I liked about working for a Catholic university was that we got Good Friday off.
Reprobate. You did that last week, too.
My bear in bunny ears will be fooled.
*g*
Morning firepups!
My kids didn’t want to dye eggs this year. I’m kind of sad about it.
No, last week I took Thursday off, worked Friday.
Hey, we got Good Friday off at the studio too. Go figure. I don’t know why.
Really? How old are they?
My kids have the day off from school today. Weird for me, being from California. My company always gave us good Friday off, though. That ended when we were purchased by a Japanese Corp this year.
Gotz to go. You pupses have a very happy Easter weekend :)
Safe travels and safe home, everypup!
your
ohmmmm
What? Hmmmm, I wonder if they don’t want to compete against gram’s incredible Easter Cake. She is making one, isn’t she?
Maybe they’ll change their minds.
With two you get eggroll.
10 and 6!
They said “the Easter Bunny can hide plastic eggs with candy in them. We’ll just leave out some plastic eggs.”
Little punks.
She made peeps with them last weekend. Made the marshmallow from scratch, dyed them, painted them :) It was awesome.
I meant “calling in well” not the day of the week. Didn’t know OmAli and I were keepin’ track, did ya??
There are shrinkie dink wraps for eggs that make for fun projects, they shrink onto the egg in boiling water. A good new game for them.
Fuckin’ commercialization via teebee. Why dye eggs that ya can’t eat when ya can have plastic eggs filled with chocolate?
Enjoy the passover eggs!
You can have my egg roll. I prefer the big fried shrimp. :)
Guilty as charged. Do I get a pony if I do it a certain number of times this year?
See? That’s what I’m saying. CBL! What a gal!
Done. Lurve me some egg loll.
What freaks me out now is the memory of hard boiled, colored eggs hidden around the house, and then when we’d found them all and gathered them into baskets they sat on the dining room table for several days as we gradually ate them.
Amazing we didn’t all die of salmonella or eColi or some other such thing.
Suit yourself. It’s okay with me that we have different tastes.
Yup. A unicorn!
Gotta go get some breakfast and finish the house cleaning I started yesterday. Hope to get a bike ride this afternoon.
Hmmmm, breakfast. Why do I have a taste for eggs this morning??
Later, peeps! Happy day!
And, speaking of rolls…Good Friday Hot Cross Buns. Another memory for those with scandavavian or german ancestry.
Actually, I’d prefer a baby dragon. Gotta train ‘em while they’re young.
BGawk!
So, SD, do you have something special planned for the day? Playing catch up or are you going to get out and enjoy some out of doors?
LOLOLOL!!!
For Easter?
Watch out for the tiny flames, they’re just learning how to sear without damage.
Oh, for anytime, thank you. With sauce.
I also like coconut shrimp. With sauce.
Just back home from finishing a couple of job details. All the b-day wishes are certainly sincerely appreciated. A solid 6 decades to be thankful for. A happy camper in this world, for sure.
Hang out, read, eat (gettin’ ready to make some French toast), take a nap, tigerz will be happy to bug the dad all day.
Glad you’ve made it, gets better all the time.
Gonna see my kids, grand-kids and great grandchild Sunday. I have to fix a dish to go with lamb, but the hostess hates onions and I seldom cook without them!
Sweet potatoes?
Oh, that sounds like a wonderful time will be had by all.
I’m pretty sure you can find a recipe for lamb without onions. Mint Jelly!
I just noticed a comment I thought I made, didn’t make it. Prolly forgot to hit submit.
Good Friday Hot Cross Buns.
Neat, I’m Ralph Stover Park near Point Pleasant, above New Hope by 10 Miles . Bucks is still beautiful. No open space down at the lower end much anymore.
A film by May Ying Welsh, Bahrain: Shouting In the Dark
Thanks for the good company, have a good spring day or rite, whatever does it for you.
A happy belated .This is when it gets fun, less” important” people you have to impress and bow before.
Thanks Ruth, I’m running around here, getting breakfast and a mug going. I think we just missed frost damage here yesterday. I’m going to be determinedly pro-active on the, it only gets better, part.
tjbs,
I visited your business website a couple times. I booked it on my other computer and have wanted to introduce myself, if that is OK.
Well my friends family or rather their grandparents had a farm that became the subdivision they lived in. They kept this big field with an old stone barn on it. I think it’s still there as my friend now lives in his parents ranch style house.
Yum, thanks for the link.
Had a nice afternoon with the little Ms after school yesterday. We went around and gathered a few part-time summer job applications for her. Then I got a solid hour of her asking me what different questions on the apps meant. Was especially nice to be needed and even better to have some answers to offer.
She determined on her own that she absolutely needed a job because most of her closer buddies had them. Proud papa.
That’s just swell news. Great going, pop!
See you all around.
Dragon, shooting you a See’s Chocolate Easter Egg through the tubes.
Off to the outdoor chores, until tomorrow morning, pups, be good and be well.
I envy your Easter plans. At least I’m not hosting this year, though. I’ve got to prepare baskets tonight after work tonight and we’ve got to get the eggs painted for the traditional egg hunt (adult who finds best hiding spot gets lots of props, heh).
tjbs, what kins of business do you have?
Just looked back in and saw your comment.
Here were some winners for us: Someone hid an egg in the birdbath. Don’t remember what colour that one was but the water disguised it and it was never found.
At the bottom of the downspout where the grass hadn’t been weed-et quite as low as the rest of the grass.
We used to put the name of each person on an egg, and the person needed to find his/her own. The birdbath egg person was some pissed when he couldn’t find his….. lol!
In a birdbath, eh? We don’t have a birdbath, bit there May be a bucket with rainwater somewhere. Bwahahaha. Our eggs are counted and the game continues until all eggs are recovered. Stinking, rotten eggs have necessitated strict rules of play. Heh.
LOL!
Rules are not always for losers!
Have a happy Easter, ysd, with your family and friends. I’d love to be there, bet you guys have a great time :)
(((ysd))) from Om :)
I used to run the egg hunt for my kids, offering a prize for the rarest one, hidden well. As they got older they had me pretty well figured out and the hunt lasted maybe 10min tops, so one year, I hid the prize in the hood of my raincoat and went outside to help the hunt, making the location a moving target.
That hunt was over even quicker than I thought! Dang smarties!
Oohhhh. Also a good idea. Blah aha.
Worthy Western Good Friday meditation:

[Orthodox Pascha is next week.]
That was the moment of revelation! I could hide nothing from them! Sigh!
Happy Easter, Juliania. Glad to see you.
I think you know that I am a secular person, but I can appreciate much of what you share without necessarily agreeing with it. Thank you for the link. So much of the history of early Christianity is analogous with the world we live in today. I had lost my bookmark for Counterpunch, so double thanks :)
Heja you Easter pups, washin’ up early and going out to enjoy the spring sunshine.
Here is an Easter mug for you: The nice thing about being senile is that you can hide your own Easter eggs. *g*
nonqui, this song is for you. Happy Birt’day, lovely man.
Serenade to Frederick Delius on his 60th Birthday
Happy Easter, pupses. Somebunny loves you.
ohmmmm
Hi, all. Just a quick stop, too much going on to stay to read the long thread (as usual); got involved in some of the newer stuff on the site. I see that our ‘leader’ can’t figure out if al Queda is for us (Libya) or against us (Yemen), and al Queda has virtually no presence in Afghanistan, where they ‘threatened to invade us at any moment. Do I see Winston Smith working feverishly at his desk?
Sorry, I pushed the button too soon. To those of you who celebrate the holidays that are happening concurrently this year, I say Happy and Meaningful Holidays. To those for whom this is just a good vacation time, have a nice vacation.
Hiya BearCountry. I had to Google Winston Smith.
Have a great day!
Nice to see you here, juliania.
Not only a meditation for Easter but a meditation for every day.
If only.
I don’t much care for constant prostalystising on this site.
But, it may work for some.
It may drive some away.
Your thread. You are free to enable any that you choose.
Hey, pups! (sigh, nobody will see this).
Hot Cross Buns are ENGLISH!!! German? Scandinavian? I don’ think so! (oh, heck, could be all of them I guess).
I used to make them every Good Friday, but haven’t for a few years. Was really hoping to get it done this year, and I got off work early (yes for Good Friday, we closed at noon and left shortly afterward. No court cases today. Whew!)
But I went shopping (for cat food first…then…shoes!!!)and was too pooped to stand in the kitchen when I got home.
But I had a hot cross bun in their ancestral home: Bath, England! My honeymoon was in London, but we made a side trip to Stonehenge and Bath, which just happened to fall on Good Friday.
Found a fabulous little traditonal bakery a stone’s throw from Bath Cathedral (or was it Bath Abbey?) in an ancient building, and since it was Good Friday, they were selling Hot Cross Buns along with the local Bath Bun.
My fave pic from the honeymoon was of me sitting in the town square munching on one of the buns (but the ex has all those pix). They were scrumptious, just sweet enough, great chewy texture…and I just felt so traditional, eating right there in England.
I’m not touching politics today. It’s a holiday weekend, weather predicted to hit highs of 82 degrees, I’m going to relax and read and sleep and maybe ride my bike. Nothing unpleasant, if I can help it.
Sounds good. Remember your memories of hot cross buns.
Very nice.
We’re never here at the same time. Oh, well.
Reading and sleeping are both on my list of top ten things to do in a day.
Oh, and a bunch of other stuff. You know, life stuff.
Thanks for showing up whenever you can.
You’re right, this is my thread and I don’t see any prostalystising on the thread. What I do see is a link to a very apropos article. I know what you’re referring to and I’m not going to tolerate any of the meanness of last week’s PUAC on my thread.
Understood.
