Mornin’, pups
Keen vs Krugman
Good morning all.
Thanks, SD. Of course, Galbraith is telling no one anything new. Without disposable income, there are no consumers. The industrial welfare proponents are eating their own tail. Basic understanding of economics would be helpful for the 1%, but they substitute passionate ideology that’s been disproved for accepting their place in the food chain.
Defensive much?
The cop who shot the 68 year old in his bed bc his medalert went off by accident has been publicly identified & is about to stand trial on another civil rights case. Details will be covered in democracynow.
I can hardly wait for the circus that will be KSM’s “trial.”
Good morning everyone.
Thank you for the post SouthernDragon.

Good morning, Dinerzens. Lotsa meaty stuff to read this morning! Krugman pretty definitively walked away from further argument with Keen a couple of days ago in his blog. It would be interesting to watch them debate live (although I’m sure I’d understand only a miniscule fraction of it).
I will be watching for the ID of the cop who shot the guy in his bed, though. I didn’t know he was in his bed, I thought he was standing in his undies with his hands at his sides when the cops barged in. Different incident perhaps?
Not sure exactly where the victim was. Trying to listen & type at the same time; not good at it.
Video showing Blackwater swerving to drive over a black burka clad woman crossing the road. No one stopped after they ran over her.
Bluebonnets are lovely, Ruth! I googled and found a closeup. They are interesting plants, apparently a bit picky about where they grow well.
Anthony Correlli is name of police shooter in White Plains.
I just remembered something I read earlier, and I may not be remembering accurately, but the description painted a picture in my head of a scrawny old man in his boxers.
The bottom line, I think, is that in many places the police are out of control. We are becoming more and more a police state.
Galbraith doesn’t have one piece of his brain with the PTB the way Krugman does. He is so much nicer to listen to or read.
democracynow was stonewalled on requests from all White Plains officials on requests for appearances.
They have a penchant for refusing cultivation, are ornery that way. Pretty, too.
They’re circling the wagons in anticipation of criminal and civil complaints.
Odd that Krugman got no recognition for opposing the PTB for tax cut ideology, while they ran the economy over the cliff.
“Stonewalled” I’m shocked I tells ya, just shocked!
Good morning, pupses, and thank you, SD.
Had to laugh when I looked at the drawing of the Yutyrannus. He looks like he is wearing a halloween costume that is a couple of sizes too small.
Your description is accurate.
Good morning folks.
Chris Woods and Emma Slater, Bureau of Investigative Journalism: Arab spring brings steep rise in US attacks in Yemen
Not a good sign. Creating the next enemy.
Discussion is heating up in Tampa over proposed “Clean Zone” around Regressive convention. Many callers to WMNF talk shows referring to Mayor Buckhorn’s proposed ordinance as “police state mentality.” The legislature, in their infinite stupidity, took all authority away from local govts in regards to gun laws. In the “Clean Zone” we can’t have masks, sticks, or squirt guns, etc, but if you’ve a concealed weapons permit you can bring your Glock. City Council meeting starts in an hour or so and I’m bettin’ it’s gonna be a barn burner.
Yes. Some of the comments are especially good, like this one from Hugh:
Link
Righto.
AHA, I just read the kitten story in the last bullet. The author is our beloved TRex! Happy to see him writing again!!
The original story I heard on DN had him standing with hands at side dressed only in boxers.
The city officials of White Plains were quiet on the whole problem until it was brought out on DN. The police came out with the stories to cover themselves. The police knew that it was a medical call, not a police call. The taser video shows that the man as described. The police were totally out of line.
They have a penchant for refusing cultivation, are ornery that way
Good Morning, All
Haven’t had coffee yet, and when I read this, I thought you were talking about the police….until you said Pretty too.
I suppose I should wake up and smell the coffee.
heh heh heh
I’ve been thinking exactly that. And I realize this is a very sweeping generality, but he seems to be ignored when he’s right and criticized when he’s wrong. I will make no assumptions that he’s wrong in this current argument, being an economics dunce.
That is exactly the mental picture I had, so I must have read or heard the same thing. In any case, the cops barged in, ignored pleas to stop and assurances there was no problem, and shot.
Did you realize who the author was when you posted the link? I had to read to the bottom to be sure. It’s not an unusual name.
EDIT: funny, I just went back and read the credit again. I stopped when it said “Athens, GA” and never read the “blogging at Firedoglake” part at all. Some of us used to stream his music broadcast and chat online. Sounds like he’s no longer on the radio, from the blurb.
Namaste SD !
How is the feisty bunch this morning ?
*cough* … eCAHN, I’ve got Coffee with Bailey’s, if you’d like some …
I figured it out when I read the little blurb.
Krugman is very often right. More than most, IMHO. Most of his policy prescriptions are the correct ones — certainly the direction. But, like all of us, he has blind spots. We can all be defined by our blind spots — in spite of our wisdom — if we fail to recognize and correct them.
Good morning, Petro!
Namaste Petro!!!
Nice to see ya. Long time, man.
And where will they get the funding from to do that sort of research and theorizing?
That’s like asking Southern Baptist Theological Seminary to fund evolution studies.
No question that Krugman is often right, and sometimes passionate in his defense of the truth. What is so frustrating about him is his inability to fully break with the PTB. He will follow a great article, for example on income inequality, by another piece towing the PTB line (for example, he still praises the Obama health care law, and has been opposed to breaking up or making public the biggest banks).
And he is a huge cat lover! Wouldn’t it be fun if you could lure him to Caturday?
I’ll take the coffee now & the Bailey’s after dinner, if that’s OK. How’re you doing?
I won’t dispute you, except that he rarely mentions the ACA without a comment that it is far from perfect and has huge flaws. A lot of people think that, also. And I thought he’d written several blog posts advocating breaking up the big banks. I think I distinctly remember that…
Cultivation can have mixed virtue/vices, and bluebonnets did not choose to be the state flower of TX.
Morning, Petro
Good Morning, Petro!
So, that’s how we’re seen? The feisty bunch? I love it.
Hope you and yours are all super good.
I usually drop by in the evening to read your posts, SD … kudos to you !
Who do you think Mittens will anoint as his Veep ? This Circus just is not ending …
I guess that the whole minimum wage discussion comes down to the fact that the ptb do not want the 99% to have a living wage. Destroying the nation is their goal in order to scoop up everything and control it. There will then be plenty of cannon fodder because that will be the preferred way to earn a living. Group will be set against group even more so than now as a way to prevent any rising against the ptb. The idea of unbiased voting machines will be a total joke because the outcome will be predetermined. Not too cynical am I?
This is what I read, courtesy of teh Google machine:
Texas Bluebonnets
So…too wet to pitch a tent? I’m sorry about that. But, we’ve got some time before it gets too hot.
Real purty pix, Ruth. Thanks for sharing them. Do they have a scent?
I’m betting on the zombie-eyed granny starver.
EDIT: would be a nice fit with Romneybot 2.0.
Yeah, I read Charlie Pierce…
G’morning all !
Sending you some incredible Coffee now … putting the Bailey’s on ice for tonight
No tellin’.
Ummm … could you be more specific ?!!
*Ducks and runs*
The point of breaking up the banks is prior to the devolution of the total value of deposits into less than a break even amount. Now, we’re working out the crisis and if the banks are forced to acknowledge mark to market, huge losses are finalized to depositors. The banks have to be held up for the preservation of fortunes in small amounts, in minor depositors’ assets.
This time the stealing is so brazen and obvious — and hurts so many — that talking about it receives applause from a very broad audience. I would note that RD Wolff’s message is broadly popular now — as he finds in nearly all of his audiences. Whether or not a movement can capture the feeling and bring about change is the big question. OWS?
I’m just waiting for Ann to unzip Mitt, and show us that he is not stiff at all …
That beats Calista’s French Horn joke by a mile …
Thanks, and yes, too muddy for tenting. The scent is very light, but the field of them has a really nice smell.
It’s the magic undies, and I believe there’s a remote for them.
I heard some talking head on tv say they’ve got several wonderful people who could fill that space…Christy, Rubio and someone else, I forget. All just blech! And, btw, what was Chris doing in Israel? I tend to not pay attention sometimes.
We’re gearing up for the long weekend … spending time with family, etc. It’s gonna be great !
And we haven’t learned a thing, and have done diddly-squat to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
~Santayana
Ewwww. I didn’t need THAT mental picture in my head before I’ve had breakfast. Thanks! (not)
As the potential Veep candidates come tumbling out of the clown car….
I usually try to avoid making disparaging remarks about Looks, but something about Christy and a clown car is not working for me.
Am I bad?
The 1% have learned from past busts that the way to make the 99% pay for them is to insist on austerity. Their insistence that austerity is the answer to resurrecting the economy is a smokescreen. It’s all about who will pay for the bust. Their primary weapon: wait.
Even though I am familiar with the word “feisty”, I looked it up anyway.
1.Having or showing exuberance and strong determination.
2.Touchy and aggressive.
I think I like definition number 1 better. :)
Santayana hadn’t observed the leader of the free world refusing to read and study, as an excuse for failing to see basic reality.
Yup you are. Funny mental picture, that.
I don’t know about his blog posts, but in his regular column he wrote that breaking up the banks was not necessary to achieve effective regulation. He received reader comments criticizing him for that position. And on health care, yes, he realizes the bill is flawed, but the bottom line is that he was one of its biggest cheerleaders as it reached the passage stage, even after he had written previously that a public option was necessary. My point is simply that Krugman will never, ever take a position fully adversarial to the PTB, although he will support what he deems the more progressive parts of it.
I was thinking of # 1, not #2 …
((( demi )))
I like trees. I like wood. This wood is just the right size.
Mornin’ all & ‘muito obrigado’ SD for this welcoming diner.
Going to be a driveby today (ain’t it always?). Have a full day packed with webinars, starting in 30 mins; so as to get on track for being gainfully employed again.
Canada has 5 Major Banks and when we suffered 2 big blows in the 80′s, our Gov’t brought in tough regulations without breaking them up. So I don’t fault Krugman for his stance on that issue.
Thanks. #2 happens from time to time. Being human and all.
As I have pointed out before, his defense of Summers, Bernanke, Geithner says most of what you need to know about him. Especially since, if you actually look at what Bernanke has written about the depression, it is such garbage that one should be embarrassed to defend the guy even if he did hire you at Princeton. Silence on the matter would have been the way to go.
Best of luck.
Wow, you’re not letting any grass grow under your feet. Good for you.
Not bad, I don’t see any disparaging remarks yet.
Morning, pups, out before 4:00 AM, back for breakfast and a second mug. New years day, today, so-to-speak. Resolutions, such as promising myself early quiet walks when possible.
Somewhat OT, but something that the Dinerzins have an interest in. On noliesradio.org Bonnie Faulkner has several programs on MMT. See the archives of Guns and Butter. Here is one of the programs on MMT and Banks. Michael Hudson is the one that gives most of the talks. These talks are given at a conference in Remini, Italy.
LOL Anyone who is still looking to economists for guidance at this point in history should come to my house and buy this herd of unicorns I have in my hall closet. People just gotta have authority to look to; Dawg forbid they should figure things out and think for themselves. Real economics just ain’t that complicated. It’s the professional mindfuckery that people graft onto it that causes all the confusion and trouble. The basic supply/demand dynamic explains about 75% of it, buy low/sell high explains another 20% or so, the remaining 5% real people don’t want or need to understand. That’s from the Curmudgeon’s Manifesto lol. Good morning, freedom-lovers. Nothing for me, thanks, I’m going to the doctor today, and they are going to do bloodwork before they strip-search and put the leeches on me. :-(
Gov. Sammiches went to visit the whaling wall. I bad, too.
It also helps that if you do take down the banks, you have to shore up the depositors, which is beyond the funds now available for that purpose, and try getting Congress to appropriate a rational amount.
I read his blog every day. He’s a bit more outspoken there, but as a tenured professor at a big name, establishment university, and a post atop the NYT opinion pages, I wouldn’t expect him to go full on adversarial to the PTB. I think some of these people have to weigh having their voices heard vs. losing their microphone.
The reality is that you can only get so “shrill” before you’re marginalized. It’s not a situation I like, but it is reality, unfortunately.
Okay, should I now throw in “You Dunce!” so our record stands unspoiled? Didn’t think so.
Unfortunately we haven’t brought in tough new regulations. So we’re set up for a repeat.
You might have lived in a monastery in a previous life.
Wish I could get up and go walking with you, although it might not be the Quiet walk you imagine. Ha.
My plantars facitis is acting up again, big time. I was out yesterday, shopping, and I wore the wrong shoes, not supportive enough, so I’m off my feet again today. :(
Stop by on May 19. I am hosting Paul on a a book salon. Am trying to round up some ringers to participate.
*ouch* … Homeopathy has a very good fix for that.
Have a great day, my friends … and a great weekend as well !
I will definitely stop by. I won’t have anything to add, but it will be interesting I’m sure.
Be sure to get eCAHN and econobuzz and a few of FDL’s other resident econobrains.
What is the book?
Morning all. Good to know that O is signing the “Jobs Bill” which in reality is nothing more than deregulation of the financial industry. The clowns have very short memories and unfortunately most in the peanut gallery do as well. Heard a caller on the Bill Press show defending O by saying he has to compromise with the crazy and then when he’s reelected he can come back and “fix” things. Wish I had some swamp land to sell.
In a country in which the Congress and regulatory agencies are bought and paid for by the industry to be regulated, regulations don’t work. That’s the lesson from the last debacle.
Exactly what we’re trying to avoid, it’s the 99% who would fare the worst.
Shouldn’t be too difficult. Thanks for the heads up. You’ve come to the right place. Not me, for certain, but there are some good heads here.
Thanks demi! Figure I have 3 months to use the resources of this highly-touted career transition org; making it a project (without pressure, of course) to consume their expertise totally, with the view to adapting their techniques to my head-hunting for employees/associates when I start my own business (have been putting this inevitability off for the greater part of my adult life).
Sorry to hear that. Got a whirlpool bath for the feets?
That presumes the crazy can be compromised with. They’re not going to improve in the next four years, they’ll just get crazier.
Off to fix some brekkie. Tummy is yelling about its emptiness.
Right on target there. OWS is certainly a player, but most folks that become involved don’t understand all of the economic institutional ins and out despite understanding that the 1% are controlling the political economy on both the political and economic sides. There have been and likely will be lots of opportunities for those who understand the ins and outs of how the institutions actually operate to do teach-ins with local Occupy groups as parts of broader actions. OWS NYC had some very good teach-ins about how Wall Street institutions actually operate (ah, the wonders of livestreaming and YouTube).
One of the institutions the labor and socialist movements of a century ago were built on were what were called “workingmen’s schools”, which provided education in reading, writing, math, politics, and economic doctrine. The content is likely to be much different, but something like those might be a direct action to get around the starving of community colleges.
Saltwater solidarity, eh.
Online, you intend? Nice use of your time and resources, for sure.
Good luck. That could be a real shit show. In deference to other FDLers, I will lurk but not participate.
Bye y’all! Off to learn new things!
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.

Riiiiight. 0 can fix things (there is no real evidence that he wants to)when he has much less help available in congress. If he wanted to fix things, in the progressive sense, he had the perfect opportunity when he was elected. There are many excuses given as to why he didn’t at that time, but the actual evidence shows that he did exactly what he wanted to do. I don’t have to reiterate the actions, everyone here knows them.
I remember teach ins during the Vietnam War and they played an important role in understanding the history and politics of what was going on at the time. Teach ins will be instrumental in educating a populace that has been bamboozled by a corrupt ruling elite and their accomplices in the corporate media for far too long.
Sadly, the WS faction has swallowed whole the ideology that just failed entirely, enriching the 1% so they will plow it back into the economy, which Does.Not.Happen. This is going to mean the consumer has no disposable income, which in turn means business failure – so they’re eating their own tails. Education would be good for the 1% as well. Not the on-the-job training variety.
This is where economists and Econ 101 do incredible damage. There is very little, if any, mention or analysis of the true underlying causes of the position we’re in.
When I was still doing temp work, I did a short stint at one of those career transition orgs. I was the receptionist and the main thing was to be cheerful and supportive. Coffee, smile, and such like. Man, the folks coming in were pretty Down. Some more than others. I could tell the real go getters from those who were just too beaten up.
Yeah, but in fairness, nobody could have anticipated . . . :-(
Nope. They are doing repairs on the jacuzzi at the community pool, so that’s out. I just have to wear my big ugly clunky tennis shoes and not the sandals or the bare feet so much.
And, I was always so proud that I wore more sensible shoes, not the high, high heels that so many of the secretaries and clerks wore at the studio.
I’ve been told that I’m lucky I didn’t get this condition when I was younger. Like I said before, last week, at least no body parts have fallen off yet.
Sorry Ruth, I missed or am missing something and don’t understand your comment. Not the first time I’ve missed the context or simply misssed reading the pertinent related comments. Love the flowers pics.
Funny, I was pointing out pointy toes on shoes in a video a friend sent me, which led to 50′s era horrible deformities of the feet. Bunions for the generation. Take care then.
Just don’t be a noodge lol. ;-) Finding a job is the hardest job, IMO.
Exactly. Not the first time in history it has happened. See King Midas.
That comment is simply an ornery response to derogatory comments, meant to provoke a smile. (Like “you slut” on SNL.)
I had to go to one of those outplacement ordeals once. They were faily useless. The actual best help that I got was signing up for a similar type of service through NJ unemployment office. It was run by people who were all in the same boat. It got you together at meetings, you went through classes, and you had to join in by doing some job in the group that needed to be done. If you got a job, you were supposed to see if you could get someone else a job at your place. I did get a job through an alumnus, and worked for him as my supervisor in the company. I am out of the job market, but I believe that the group is still operative. It was well worthwhile for all who participated.
Also the Fall of Rome. But it’s the smalltime losers who are going to take the brunt of the ignorance/stupidity of the 1%.
I think she was just throwing a disparaging word at ya, for funs.
Did you decide to join the golf tournament?
That’s Ignorant Slut…dear. :)
My bad. Or something.
thanks for the “heads up” re Trex, msmolly.
thanks for the in depth news, southerndragon! always my first read in the morning.
hi, pups!
To be precise it was “Jane, you ignorant slut!”
After long stretches on a ladder or certain days on my feet long uninterrupted periods on concrete floors, I have trouble too. I find a light-weight supportive walking shoe, rather than barefoot or stocking-foot around the house, helps more than hurts.
I didn’t walk all that far, but kind of stalked through a wetlands area, hip-boots (rolled down to knee-high), back to a secluded non-pubic lake. A couple of weeks from now the insects are too awful to bother with that kind of hike.
Gotta learn my lines better.
Thanks.
Good shoes really are a boost, which I learned from getting waitress shoes for a few summers waiting tables. Amazingly good for my feet.
Now, must get off to do things before everyone else gets awake and in my way, the ignorant sluts….
50 lashes with a wet noodle.
I know you’re correct. I just have had this no bra and no shoes in the house rule for so long.
Oh, man, I’m going to have to CHANGE. Permit me a moment to be a cry baby.
See ya later, hot stuff.
Oh, and I think that the monastery thing is more apropos to current situation, except I am the only monk here. I should probably send for an on-line religious sect certification.
You already explained that riding in the convertible with the top down, situation.
Bye Ruth.
Off for a couple hours of work, myself. Requested to not show up before 9:00 AM. Requirements like that allow me to bargain for a higher wage.
Good day pups.
I shall call you Brother Allium Sativum.
I have heard that Crocs are good shoes for foot problems (and I’ve also heard the opposite, YMMV). I swear by my Birkenstocks, but usually go barefoot or just in slipper socks in the house. But I don’t have foot problems. My daughter is bothered by the same thing you are, and she wears Crocs a lot and likes them.
Now I’ve fed myself so it’s off to clean the upstairs bedroom and bath in anticipation of my son’s and DIL’s visit this weekend. Good thing I have visitors occasionally or the upstairs would never be cleaned.
Are all their kids coming too? House Full.
I like being thought of as good for whatever “ails,” you.
Bye demi and you too, molly.
As I said above (#16) that’s why I like Galbraith so much better. He doesn’t parse his arguments to keep a high profile perch at the New York Times. Galbraith doesn’t get the exposure Krugman does, although he still has quite a bit of media exposure. Because Galbraith doesn’t pull his punches, he also reaches a deeper level of political analysis, as shown in his book, The Predator State. Unlike Krugman, he has also written about alternative forms of economic analysis outside the mainstream (he is not a Marxist, but unlike Krugman does not ignore Marxian thought).
So maybe Robert Baker is right after all that dinosaurs came before birds?
Are they now acknowledging that most dinosaurs had feathers?
That kitten is adorable. I have one just like her who’s tearing up the house right now……..
Someone sent me a LOT of pictures of bunnies with various baby animal lookalikes posing together. It was almost enough to get me going with some kind of adorable kitten. . .but I am resisting the urge.
Miss Sissy has been sporting a fur-matt under her chin that is almost dragging on the floor, she has not been able to liberate it from herself, and of course she is not going to let me help her with it. I know I will find it sometime after it is finally off of her. She seems to be making progress.
It does make it all the more appealing to raise a kitten from the get go, one that will let me love her as much as I want. Oh well. Not gonna do it.
Also, SD, really a double hitter this AM between teh kitten AND right before, the T-rex story. Love it.
No kids coming. It is one of their “no kids” weekends. I haven’t yet figured out where to put 6 kids, ages 18 – 6, plus their parents. And I have no cable, so limited TV for them, and not much to do here.
I expect I will have them all here eventually, but haven’t yet.
They’re spending their no-kids weekend at Chez Mom’s? Not saying you aren’t a great host, but, uh, well, I guess to each his own.
Is this the opportunity for you to have that little chat with your son? Maybe if you explain to him how it makes you feel when he say’s that lefty stuff about you, especially in front of the kids.
Maybe stick to your feelings. Lots of I statements, if you know what I mean. I bet you can guide him to figure it out on his own. I think that’s the way most of us learn.
They have “no kids” weekends every other weekend, when their kids are with the exes. In my son’s case, his kids are with him half of each week, not just weekends, and it includes a weekend on alternate weeks. In my DIL’s case, she has the kids except for alternate weekends and a week or two in the summer. They protect those “no kids” weekends vigorously, because they need the break, and because especially my DIL’s ex loves to make her life difficult and would make it hard to trade.
They’ve been trying to find a weekend to come up here, and this one worked with our schedules.
I will only bring up the “lefty” stuff if he says it again or another opportunity presents itself, which I’m sure it will at some point. I’m not going to bring it up all by itself and drop it into an otherwise peaceful weekend. I’m sure there will be opportunities as the election gets closer.
I’m glad they can visit you.
I’ve lived with the Kid’s and their Dad’s schedule for almost 20 years, so, belive me, I know.
I’m sorry to have given you advice.
I’m sure you will do what you feel is best.
Please don’t apologize for giving me advice. That’s what friends do, right?
Thanks. I’m glad we are friends. You’re cool, MsMolly.
Hey, anybody reading late. It’s ten to nine and I’m fading fast. Been running around like a crazy person this week, covering cases for my boss who’s had a family emergency. He texts me with barest info early in the morning, or mid-mroning, or whenever, and I go flying over with no file to another courtroom, explain to a client when present, etc., etc.
I.am.pooped.
Last night I woke up at 2 am worrying, so I got up and worked a little, trying to find answers online to the problem I was worrying about.
And of course, on Monday I flew to El Paso and back, by way of Dallas (outgoing) and Houston (coming home). The tornadoes very kindly waited until the next day to hit Dallas, or I might still be at DFW.
At houston, natch, I came in at the far northeastern terminal, and had to go to the far southeastern terminal, almost last gate. Lots of hurrying, no supper.
Running on adrenaline, enjoying much, but no time to thnink about it.
love the tiny kitten — usually don’t find Persians cute, but that teensy baby is just adorable. Loved the look on her face, watching Mom eat grown-up-cat food. Obviously this mom cat didn’t abandon her weakest kitten, as many do. The final scene of Mom and Marshy sleeping together was lovely.
And it isn’t even Caturday!
