Before feminists began fighting for the victims of Domestic Abuse, it was considered a dirty secret, somehow the woman’s fault, difficult to prosecute, and so on and so forth.

I knew an older woman and discovered her secret after something warned to me not to marry her son in 1970s.

When she asked why I’d refused him, I replied, “I think he was going to start hitting me.”

A deep silence, and then this woman who appeared to be married to the nicest guy in the world, broke her silence, “His father beats me, and it’s ruined my life.”

But what difference does it make to Republicans if a woman’s life is ruined, and her sons trained to carry on that destruction in their own families?

My guess is that the Rightists are heading for some statute that will allow men to Stand Their Ground against uppity women……for gawd’s sake, someone has to look out for the men!

I try so very hard not to loathe people. However, I think I can make an exception for morons that have never been in a household filled with domestic violence opining about how women who are beat – and those lucky ducky children who get to watch the dysfunction- should make lemonade out of the beatings they receive and out of the fact that that everyday can be tiptoe around daddy so you don’t set him off day. It’s not like children don’t live what they learn or anything. It’s not like a household where one parent is perpetually in survival mode and the other is violent leaves a vulnerable kid with a whole lot of options when it comes to getting help with problem solving. God, this guy is an idiot.

Perhaps it is time to start supporting a few Men have responsibilities laws, for instance:

Women have every right to demand castration of men who cheat on them. Upon providing proof of infidelity the state must arrange to sever the penis of the cheating spouse as they have proved that they cannot be trusted to safeguard that which belongs to the woman they married. The man’s health insurance must pay for the castration.

Suz – I want to know WHY. I really do. Why are they so f**king threatened by a group of people who, by and large, can’t get the top jobs, can’t get paid the same rate as men do for the work done, still can’t get hired to do certain jobs no matter what their qualifications, get harassed in the workplace all the damn time. Even at the same height, a woman generally weighs less, has less upper body strength and fewer fighting skills; generally men are not in relationships with women who are the same size they are so they have height as well as weight in their favors. What possible advantage do women have over men that they feel threatened and hate us so damn much? I’m waiting for legislation to be proposed requiring us to never leave the house unless we have a male family member with us. if I get a big male intact dog, will that count?

I grew up in an abusive household. I wouldn’t wish it on any child. The relationship my parents had hindered my ability to trust. Trust is the cornerstone in any relationship so needless to say for a number of years I was dysfunctional(I flitted from guy to guy never letting anyone close beyond the superficiality of a sexual relationship.) It took therapy, time, determination(on my part) and patience(my spouse) to get to where I am today. My brother inherited my father’s alcoholism and his coping skills(and let’s face it when you use your fists instead of words you have poor coping skills). He’ll have been gone almost 4 years in September. He wasn’t even 40 when he died. He spent a good portion of his adulthood wishing he was dead(and trying to kill himself). Pain and hardship are the legacy of a household that is built upon violence. Any lawmaker who feels differently ought to be required to spend extended time with families affected by it before proposing ridiculous legislation.

Just watched a documentary on the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. 146 died, 121 of them women, the youngest 14. The conditions that led to this tragedy are just what the right wants to return to. Marginalizing women and workers as nothing more than commodities of profit for a select few. Regulations after all crimp the style of the “job creators.” Screw the selfish, indifferent and callous ruling class!

As a lurker, I am appalled at the attack on women’s rights. My wife is my equal and no-one has the right to say otherwise. Every woman has the right to decide to do what with her body. The people on the right are trying to use their god to tell everyone what to do. And this is part of the argument against gay marriages. They hate equality.

Funny how their love of small government just completely evaporates whenever it conflicts with their “family values”.

Oh, spit, spit spit!!! What are these guys, beautiful dreamers or something? Take it from me, it’s hard to find something to love in a man when he’s beating you around the head, kicking you when you’re down, and threatening that if you tell about the beating, he’ll do worse next time! And all just so these jerk-offs can once again blame the victim and leave the perpetrator off the hook. I have very low tolerance for the above type of advice. It doesn’t even seem to enter into these fools consciousness that the fool doing the beating has serious and possibly fatal mental issues. I tell young women, from the first incident of violence, run, don’t walk to the nearest exit. Pick up your child or children and don’t look back. Don’t tempt fate; find a way!

this is just one more reason for states to offer legally enforceable domestic contracts and to get out of the marriage racket altogether. let the churches have marriage, which is strictly religious by its very nature. just make sure that religious ceremonies like marriage confer no secular benefits such as heir designation or favorable tax status.

wanna be married? find a church and get married. wanna set up a legal framework for your heirs and relatives? that must be a separate legal, not religious, function.

I believe this is how it works in Germany – civil marriage is what provides all the rights and legal framework of marriage, and if you want to get a church marriage in addition to that, it’s between you and the church of your choice, but it doesn’t confer any additional legal legitimacy.
