Former Israeli intelligence chief Meir Dagan, in his first U.S. television interview, says he believes that the Iran regime is rational and that now is not the time to attack Iran.
“The regime in Iran is a very rational one,” the former top Israeli spymaster tells CBS’ Leslie Stahl, according to excerpts of the interview released by 60 Minutes.
Not that this is actually ever reported much, but the above is an unreported historical fact. Even if Iran got a nuclear weapon, they are not going to drop it on Israel, they are not going to use it on Israel or the United States. No, they are going to use it as leverage to dictate policy in the region so certain unnamed global superpowers cannot just decide to start dropping bombs and occupying countries anymore.
Which may not always be the worst thing that could happen.
So yes, the Iranians are very rational, even if their government has other substantial problems.
Too bad many of our political leadership are not.

About Firedoglake
Israel is the real danger, their government is totally irrational, run by crazy right wing ideologues and backed by corporate america always eager to invade any country for fun and profit.
Middle Eastern wars must be like Chinese food — an hour after the warmonger’s done with one, he’s hungry for more.
Good morning all,
Atomic weapons a fine example of sow the wind reap the whirlwind.
Sane people would have never developed, deployed them or possess them now.
We’re liars then , through Non-prolifiration treaty, pretending we’d ever give up our security blanket which in the end keep us as secure as that blanket. That’s why to be careful with what you wish for.
But that’s where we manufacture “HEROS” . Where would we find heros if we didn’t have the crucible of the battlefield ?
Good morning, pups. It’s Brooks and Krugman today. Bobo is almost human today. In “Hey, Mets! I Just Can’t Quit You” he says considering that sports fandom is the sort of thing that begins with youthful enchantment, the New York Mets will be in his blood forevermore. Of course, being Bobo, he had to go and scrounge in sociology books to try to figure out why… But at least this column didn’t leave me wanting to stuff him in a sack with 10 weasels and drop him in a mill pond. Prof. Krugman, in “Ignorance is Strength,” says at a time when American education is already in deep trouble, one of our two major political parties has taken a hostile stance against going to college. Of course they have — the last thing the Republicans want or need is a population with critical thinking skills.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got cinnamon buns with royal icing today. It’s finally Friday. I got up yesterday absolutely convinced it was Friday, and I wasn’t alone. 3 other people at the office were in the same boat, dragging around moaning. But it’s finally here. Have a great day.
The thing that is most annoying to me is that the Bush supporters would have collectively had a cow if Democrats had been openly discussing bombing Iran. In fact they did get up in arms when Democrats took trips to foreign countries during the Bush years.
What’s that phrase? Oh, yeah: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.”
Yep. To paraphrase an eighteenth century mathematician, “I recognize the (elephant) by it’s (hypocrisy)”.
I think that what we’ve all failed to really internalize is that with the current crop of Republicans they hypocrisy is a feature, not a bug. It’s a tough thing to wrap your mind around.
That’s certainly true with the current crop of presidential candidates and it’s going to get worse with whomever winds up with the nomination, moving into the general.
The GOPers know that their programs are not popular with the 99% if they are understood. So it’s important that they be misunderstood. You must cut Social Security to save it. You must work around the constitution to protect it. You must cut medicare to preserve it.
Boxturtle (Ain’t it great that Obama stands against all those things? /s)
I’m not an Obama supporter, goodness knows. But I must admit I’m looking forward to the first Obama/Clown Car winner debate. I’m wondering if the GOP will even permit a debate to happen.
Boxturtle (Though you can make the case that a debate between Obama and Mitt wouldn’t disagree much)
The farm teams in the state legislatures are even worse.
I’m not either and am too. The thing about Obama vs (Republican) is a difference of degree. It’s like comparing a searchlight to a supernova. Like most people here, I’m sick of only ever having the “lesser of two evils” to choose from and this election is shaping up to be just that but there is no equivalency here.
And with that, I’ve gotta go to work. Have a good day to all.
BIG time.
If you had one bullet and the other guy has thousands of bullets, would you attack? Rational people do not commit suicide. The irrational people are those led by the nose ring, who dispense with reason.
Anyone who blindly believes the assertions of government, given the history of lies and misrepresentations, is irrational. A healthy distrust of “government” period, theirs, ours, anybodies government is rational.
Given the horrible consequences of nuclear bullets, I do believe rational heads will prevail.
Question is who is the real bully here, David or Goliath and who is David and who is Goliath?
Die and go right to hell, all warmongering POS! Too Life, not death assholes………..
The Republican Party along with their Democratic wannabees are the greatest threat to world peace and the well being of the planet. If any war is to be fought it should be a war against all Republicans and their fellow travelers. They are not a legitimate party but a 5th column of superstition, ignorance and greed.
The entire government is defunct. When regular citizens have to be monitored, tracked, listened to on a daily basis there is no government.
NOT regular citizens. Only suspected terrorists, moslems, possible drug users, scary brown mexicans and wall street protestors need worry. It’s a very limited program.
Boxturtle (Koolaid seems particularly tasty this morning)
LOL!
Ya made me laugh already. Pretty early for a belly shaker.
Who needs eyebrows? They’re hungry for war.

Fixed it for ya.
