It is Super Tuesday with 10 states voting: Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Ohio, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. You can find my primer for tonight here and find part one of the live blog here.
Real time results can be found at Politico or Google.
To recap: So far Newt Gingrich won Georgia. Mitt Romney won Massachusetts, Vermont and Virginia. Rick Santorum won Tennessee and Oklahoma. Ohio the big prize tonight Remains extremely close.
9:29 pm – With 99% reporting in Virginia it is Romney 59% to Ron Paul at 41%. At 41% that is a pretty big protest vote against Romney.
9:34 pm – In Ohio with 35% of the precincts reporting it is Santorum 39%, Romney 35%, Gingrich 15%, Paul 9%. The big urban areas for the most part haven’t reported so far and that is where Romney is expected to do best.
9:42 pm – Romney is speaking now.
9:45 pm – It appears that Rick Santorum is doing very well in the small North Dakota caucus, where there was basically no polling before today. With 26 percent reporting, it is Santorum 41%, Romney 26%, Paul 25%, Gingrich 8%. While North Dakota doesn’t have very many delegates, another win for Santorum would really help shape the spin tomorrow.
10:00 pm – With 55% reporting in Ohio it still remains incredibly close. It is Santorum 38%, Romney 36%, Gingrich 15%, Paul 9%.
10:08 pm – CNN is projecting that Rick Santorum will win the North Dakota caucus by a big margin. This is the third win for Santorum tonight.
10:23 pm – Santorum is still maintaining his narrow lead in Ohio. With 70% reporting it is still Santorum 38%, Romney 36%, Gingrich 15%, Paul 9%.
10:33 pm – Ohio continues to tighten up as more votes come in from the urban areas. With 74% reporting is Santorum 38%, Romney 37%, Gingrich 15%, Paul 9%.
10:38 pm – It looks like the very large Mormon population will deliver for Romney in Idaho. With 12% reporting in Idaho it is Romney 78%, Paul 11%, Santorum 8%, Gingrich 3%.
10:41 pm – With 81 percent reporting in Ohio only 6,000 votes currently separate Santorum and Romney.
10:48 pm – With 85 percent reporting in Ohio Santorum’s lead is down to less than 3,000 votes. Indications are that Romney will end up pulling off a very narrow victory in Ohio once the Cleveland vote is counted.
11:08 pm – With 86 percent reporting in Ohio Romney has taken a lead of roughly 2,000 votes over Santorum.
11:17 pm – With 88 percent reporting in Ohio Romney’s lead has grown to roughly 4,000 votes. There is basically no way for Santorum to still win this based on where the vote hasn’t been counted.
11:32 pm – Mitt Romney has won the Idaho Caucus! That is four wins for Romney so far with a good chance he will eventually end up winning Ohio and Alaska.
11:40 pm – With 91 percent reporting in Ohio, Romney leads by about 6,000. While the race is so close the networks will likely wait for all the votes to come in to make the call, all signs and models clearly indicate Romney will win.
Final Thoughts – Tonight was a solid night for Romney. It could have been better but it was still very good. Romney will win between 5-6 of the ten states that voted today. Not only did Romney win more states tonight he will win way more delegates. What is important is how Romney won. Thanks to huge margin of his victories in Idaho, Virginia and Massachusetts he will net a huge share of overall delegates.
The other decent news for Romney is that Gingrich solid victory in his home state of Georgia will keep him in the race. Romney clearly has a problem in the South but as long as both Santorum and Gingrich are in the race they should continue to help split the region.
While nearly losing Ohio will be a painful lose for Santorum, he still had a respectable showing winning Oklahoma, Tennessee and North Dakota. Santorum did well enough to justify staying in the race.

About Firedoglake
Kelly hauled me up here. And I was having such fun down in the weeds……..
Hi Dearie! I’m here.
And I’m bringing the link to my gas price chart, too:
Gas price chart, 48 months.
Apparently W’s economic collapse gave Obama a new floor to work off of.
It was tough here in Nashville for Tennessee Southern Baptists: either the Mormon, a devilish cult; or the Catholic, a Papist. Looks like Benedict XVI took the checkered flag.
A lot of the people who live in Lorain, Geauga and Lake counties work in Cleveland so to see these counties to go the same as Cuyahoga (Cleveland) would not be surprising.
For the first time, I am feeling a chill of fear about Santorum’s prospects for the presidency.
I do love the religious angle. I’ve pretty much ignored the Mormons … up til now. Do you know that they believe God is a person who married a person goddess and that they came from a distant planet and are now up there/somewhere breeding little souls for current Mormons to fill up with human bodies???? I don’t know how the Catholics are going to take to that!
I was telling my daughter (baptized Catholic) about what I was reading on Mormon sites…..and she said, “Yeah, but, Mom, when you think about Adam and Eve and apples and fig leaves and drinking Jesus’ blood and all that…..” We are all so fallen away …….. Do we have any Humanist candidates? I didn’t think so.
Maybe not as bizarre as the Scientologists but it ranks right up there.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Jon Walker:
Any recent numbers out of the primary district between Kapture and Kucinich…I know the conventional wisdom had Corporate Kapture beatin ‘im but she would hafta cut into his old base to do it…any word?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, EVEN THE LESS OF THE EVILS NEEDS A KICK IN THE ASS!!
Crap………I hope we don’t have a Scientologist candidate this time around. And I’m darned tired of seeing the Scientologist advertisements that come on in the late night on the teevee. Crazy damned country we’re living in.
recap(itulate) means to return to the top/head or the beginning, or to get newer teeth. Don’t be sacred of saying ‘to summarize’.
Look at the dark circles around Mitt’s eyes. He looks like a raccoon. He speaks as if he’s absolutely exhausted. And Santorum’s pulled ahead in Ohio.
So far Kapture is leading according the WKYC. 52 – 24 percent.
Why are big urban areas last to report in Ohio? That smells.
Mitt Romney is falling a part! WOW
Mitt Romney, the guy who ship jobs out of the USA, is going to save USA Jobs?
really Mitt? this is beyond hilarious
You guys probably think I’m kidding about the Mormon thing, but I’m not. Several of my friends are Southern Baptists, although not politically conservative, and they tell me about Fellowship Suppers where that is the topic of conversation.
As to the Catholic thing, that’s not such a big problem since the Catholics joined in on the abortion issue.
Mitt sounds horrible. I’ve never seen him stumble over words. I think they didn’t boot him up with this new speech this morning.
I’m still researching ‘the Mormon thing’ and am astounded that so little of their beliefs have been exposed. Shocked, really. I like the Mormons I know and admire their family devotion and planning ahead and all……but I understood Catholic mythology to be just that by the time I was 16 and would be horrified to learn that today’s Mormons actually believe the story they have been told. Just wow.
Well in Cuyahoga Country, there are a lot of separate little burgs all of which has to report to the County Election supervisor etc. It’s a lot more messy that in the rural areas. Also a lot more people involved.
You get your own planet when you die.
Have you got that far yet?
Spitzer surmises he is worried about Ohio.
He has a troubled mind. If he,losses Ohio how will that change things for him?
How had Rmoney gotten this far without anyone explaining what he and other Mormons actually call their beliefs/their creed?????? Growing up Catholic, I picked up on the nonsense pretty early…and still enjoyed the candles and incense and stuff…but I never bought into the nonsense. Why is no one putting this Mormon belief stuff out there????
On edit: Catholicism has 2000 years of mythologyzing…..Mormons are the new kids on the block.
Romney can’t beat the whisper campaign being run against him by the GOP
Mitt Romney and all mormons must face this simple truth! the GOP base, which is made up of Evangelicals don’t like MORMONS
You get your own planet – if you’re a man.
Women have to be pulled into heaven by their husband. ‘Cause you know, they can’t get there themselves.
How do you expect them to know what to report until they see what everybody else did? If they go too soon, it could come out wrong.
the GOP elites need Mormon votes in november
however, Newt, and Santorum are attacking Mitt ROmney on the Mormon issue
the GOP elites don’t want the Mormons to walk away,
The Catholic alliance with the Southern Baptist Convention was sealed in the Moral Majority that put Reagan into power and spurned Southern Baptist Sunday School teacher Jimmy Carter. It was not just abortion, but also school vouchers that they had in common.
I never understood how he won Mass governorship. Mass must be a little nuttier than we commonly believe. Good luck Ellizabeth.
Yep. Far as I can tell, Mormon women are brood mares and little else.
Ohio is doing crazy again.
And, jeebus, with Rmoney worth $250million….why would anyone give him a penny when he has contributed nothing to his own campaign???
Citizen cmaukonen:
Just got back from Kos…latest on big board is 52-44% for Corporate Kapture.
I have an in law in Florida. She is in tight with a baptist church. She flat says she votes the way they all are told to. Sees nothing at all wrong with that.
Will he drop out if he losses Ohio?
I’m noticing the low turnout. It is most striking in North Dakota. With 49% of the precincts in, the total vote over all candidates in 7300 votes.
Really excited base there,eh?
Howard Fineman on MSNBC says Rick’s campaign thinks they may pull it out. But: the Cincy and Cleveland suburbs are still out, and they’ll be Mitt’s.
By which I mean (corrected): Not you!
Your man gets his own planet.
What is all this planet stuff?.
Oh, I just so never imagined that I could have my own planet….isn’t that wonderful….and, yes, I’m about that far in my learning, but my mouth keeps gaping open while I read this stuff….on Mormon sites, I must reiterate. It’s a pretty story, but it sure does make me question anyone who would be an elder/bishop/godbotherer in such a religion. I cannot imagine what Rmoney would have to say if he were questioned on any of this stuff.
Carter disavowed the Southern Baptists (spurned the sect) but I don’t know when that was.
Dead Mormons who’ve done good here get to rule their own planet.
Check out their post-life cosmology. It’s insane (isn’t everyone’s?)
I feel two things about Santorum’s successes, however long-lived they may be, and they are contradictory:
Joy at the consternation from the republican leadership who are watching the bill for decades of whoring around with the crazies come due…
And, sadness that the pleasure having an out-and-out lunatic to run against would give Barack Obama. And the relative ease which it will afford his obtaining a second term of bipartisan crap.
I think the GOP elites will all scream “HOUSTON WE HAVE A VERY, VERY, HUGE PROBLEM”
USA politics have become a game played on the edges!
the so call mythical middle is all but DEAD!!!
Obama and current Dems better look closely.
With OWS gearing up to go on the war path all summer, DEMS better stay away from blue dog ideas?
No new Dem will be running on the idea of working with Republicans
Oh for sure. 1% wanabees
I got dibbs on Barstow!
False.
Yes, Teddy.
Not much religious success without plenty of pie-in-the-sky afterlife gobbledygook. :o)
Elaborate.
If Ohio is any indication, it looks like it’s going to be the Metro areas (poor and what’s left of the middle class) vs the rural areas and burbs.
If Frothy takes Ohio, Mitch McConnell and John the Orange are going to be in a tizzy. Much hand wringing coming up.
Maybe they don’t drink coffee so they can sleep during eternity?
As vulnerable as Obama is/was/is?, that the republicans who profess to hate his “socialist” butt so much, only turn out in these modest numbers, must be worrying for republicans who really want to see him defeated.
And I’m not sure that the party leadership is included in that group.
The Mormon magic underwear used to be crotchless.
Then sombody thought it was high time to sew up the crotches. And so they did.
Wonder why they had to be crotchless to begin with? What purpose did that serve?
John Harwood says there aren’t enough uncounted votes in Cuyahoga County (sub Cleveland) to put Romney over the top. Ohio might go to Frothy.
Much hand wringing and comedy coming up.
Went ahead and fixed it up for ya…
‘Scuse me. You say that Mormon women are more than brood mares. I asked you to elaborate. I’m sure you are still typing away. I’m still awaiting your elaboration. Women in the LDS cannot be a part of the religious ‘management’ and I doubt they can get their own planet after death…but would instead be ‘sealed’ to a brother or father or husband or son. What role besides the domestic role is granted to a Mormon woman. (And, hey, you are talking to a former Catholic, so I know exactly how women are treated in authoritarian sects/cults.)
Indeed. Religion is metaphysical nonsense. Pure superstition. If a student graduates from high school, with a minimal understanding of language, truth and logic, and the scientific method, he/she should be immune to the idiocy of practiced religion, and its baggage of BS. And know why.
Google says there are 2 counties that have not reported yet. Marion and Medina.
“Much hand-wringing coming up…”
You jes’ betcha! I hate that Frothy’s success will keep Obama comfortably in the right lane, but seeing the (putative) angst from gooper leaders will be entertaining, to say the least.
BUT, with the alternative four more years of Mr. Centrist, they’re really in a no-lose situation.
When they became a front for the Republican Party during the George H. W. Bush administration. About the time that Wake Forest, Furman, Mercer, and a few other Baptist university became private universities because of the litmus tests on professors.
Thank you, kind sir – you’re right. Didn’t watch the Newtpalooza but I’m assuming that he is going full steam until the convention – right?
No. My department head (college) and very good friend for many years, a lovely and loving woman, is a Mormon (married) (and gave me a copy of The Book Of Mormon, which she lovingly inscribed). She doesn’t fit your impression. Is she that much of an exception? Maybe.
Good points, Dearie.
I, personally, sleep better at night just knowing that if I walk out and pee on my yard-boy statue of Brigham Young, after I go to the big Bluegrass Festival in the sky, they’ll still take me in. I might even get to meet the old boy, and I’d love to ask him if he really engineered the Mountain Meadows massacre.
Don’t be so sure about the Dems. They tend to be suicidal at moments like this.
The southern states are coming up. If he takes a few of those, he might not be quite the laughingstock he might otherwise end up being. However the votes tally up, the convention promises to be a fun-filled laugh-a-palooza. You’re prolly gonna want to stockpile popcorn. Maybe in a grain silo…
I don’t touch type, I’m dancing as fast as I can. *g*
Wow. That is quite some support for your statement: “False”
Jeez. I like the Mormons I know. They are nice people. But if they buy into the nonsense, we really should look into that. Your response leaves me….well….wondering about what other pronouncements you have made and will make.
On edit: You got nothin’!
Too bad Paul didn’t take a state tonight – would have made a happy time for ALL the candidates – I have to stop laughing…..this is serious business.
Thanks
That is kinda nice. If I join the tribe, can I get a planet too? Can you pick the one you want?
Well if Romney gets the nomination and loses to O, the ultra right will try to run someone even more bat shit crazy than Santorum – if that’s possible.
I want Alpha Centauri. Danger Danger Danger !! Will Robinson.
Maybe the thugs don’t really want a president but will spend all their money on congress?
Hey, counselor, ‘false’ was an objection, not a ‘pronouncement’.
I thought that was Wall Streets job.
So long as none of the neighboring planets are not run by right wing bat sgit crazies like these guys, I’ll take whatever is available. Maybe one close to a black hole just for the thrills of the ride.
Living in S.C., I know some Baptists. Catholics? Heh. Side-to-side hand-waggle, but they do NOT like Mormons.
Romney just pulled ahead in Ohio by a wee bit.
Oh shit. I was hoping for a few laughs.
Pandora. Having my own flying dragon would be way cool. :o)
Doesn’t matter. Obama wins reelection. And we’re still royally fuct.
Sorry if I came off as aggressive and nasty, but I think it is important to figure out who these candidates are and what they are about. If Romney were to win (and I think he has been anointed…and that Santorum is messing up his party) then we need to know who he is. I can see Romney/Santorum going against Obama…..and even though I don’t like Obama, I loathe both Romney and Santorum and find them to be detrimental to my mental and physical health. I want the word out on both of them. Live and learn, I say. You know a nice Mormon lady. So do I. That does not fully reveal what the thinking is of a Romney who is a high mucky-muck in the Mormon church. I want to know what they think and what their goals are (and I kind of think they believe they are the saviours.) Your quick “false” annoyed me. Facile.
Yeah, that’s a nice one. Then you can get one of those flying thinges and tool around the flying islands.
This is the year politics died. #OWS is right.
No: “Objection” is an objection. “False” is a pronouncement.
Ding. Ding. Ding.
Follow the money.
All of these guys are nuts. But they will have hundreds of millions to spread lies on the air waves. Heaven help us, we will not know what green looks like after the media blitz.
Bring on the zombie clowns, then.
OWS might be the hope we need. Will it come back and make a statement?
I agree — but not about ‘aggressive’ and ‘nasty’. Santorum was one of my US Senators when I lived in PA (where I lived longer than he had). He beat a superior candidate, Harris Wofford, who had filled out John Heinz’s term. The Dems had to run Casey, an anti-choice Dem, to beat Santorum.
It’s already been a statement, calling out our false politics. What I fear is, after this, it’s less peaceful.
I don’t like violence, but #OWS might have been the peoples’ last message of non-violent protest.
Are we arguing?
is OH winner take all??
I hope not! I’m really quite the dearie. Just ask anyone around here. “:)~
Talk about a split. Those Ohio counties that went to Romney went for him big time and those that went to Santorum went for him big time. Few if any close.
The Lakota Nation is making a stand right now. It’s like a LAND OCCUPY. TThey are preventing XLpipeline trucks from entering the Pine Ridge Reservation. The truckers are trying to avoid road taxes for excessive weight and have been directed to use roads through the rez. Some arrests have been made and there is a call out for all Lakotas to come to the border near Wanblee SD to bulwark the original small group which included Olowan Sara Martinez, Debra White Plume, Grandmother Marie Randall and others.
<ahref="http://www.alternet.org/rss/breaking_news/825563/lakota_indians_block__'keystone_xl_pipeline'_trucks_in_six-hour_standoff/
Ohio is a delightful state. East side is Appalachia…..beautiful, rural, sometimes kinda backward. West side is Indiana redux. Cincinnati is quite conservative but upwardly mobile. It’s always up for grabs in Ohio.
MSNBC: Blah, blah, blah, Santorum isn’t gone get nominated, Rachel, get real.
Where’s our Cleveland/Toledo contingent to explain the norther part of the state of Ohio?
And I can’t imagine Columbus and OSU going for Santorum, but I need to see the map again.
Good for them.
North dakota Fighting Sioux!!!
What is interesting is the Cleveland area. Shaker Heights (mostly older money) is liberal but just east in Beachwood and Maple Heights and Gates Mills (nouveau riche) conservative. Closer in mostly Black and other Cultures are decidedly liberal.
Columbus went to Romney. http://www.google.com/elections/ed/us/results/2012/gop-primary/oh
Romney ahead in Ohio by 2000 votes.
michael steele’s tie looks like a cow
Happy Days Are Here Again: MyFDL now opens.
The corporate media is hilarious!!! as usual
The corporate media always tries to ignore the obvious.
the BASE of the GOP hates Mormons.
It does not take much brain power to figure out that ALABAMA, MISSISSIPPI, GEORGIA, SC, republicans will never vote support a MORMON!
in 1968 the GOP made a deal with the DEVIL! we are all witnessing the complete take over of the GOP by the Hill Billies who carry Bibles and Guns, and hate all brown people and those who do not worship Jesus.
Those were the DixieCrats back in the day. What goes around comes around.
yes they were
the GOP ELITES are pulling their hair out right now.
putting Romney, Santorum, Newt, on the top of the GOP national ticket, gives the Dems complete control of DC.
the other big problem is this! these new Dems will come to DC under the OWS banner and not really be a fan of the status quo, which scares the hell out of GOP elites and Dem elites.
Gingrich iS a fucking bum.
That is Extremely Cool. Thanks for the info.
Anybody know if Ohio awards delegates by congressional district (or whatever), or if it’s a winner-take-all state? If the latter, Santorum might be getting the real advantage.
Go Ricky, Go!
Fight, Ricky, Fight!
Goooooooo Ricky!
Hope you do better than me. I asked that before. Still hoping for an answer.
Just saw somehting interesting. CNN exit polls say Romney won the Catholic vote in Ohio by more that 13% over santorum
Sorry I missed your earlier query…I came in late, and skimmed quickly.
It’s also the case that I misstated part of my question, cuz I should have said that if Ohio awards by congressional district, then Santorum may have gained the advantage.
I think that factoid is decidedly significant, even though it probably doesn’t change anything in any meaningful way. I think it’s important, though, because it’s a re-affirmation of the wonderfully splintered nature of modern Repub party.
I waste no affection on the modern Dem party, but as most of our political life has sunk beneath the waves, I think the D’s have still got their heads above water
Dennis Kucinich just conceded defeat to Marcy Kaptur. Regardless of whether we trust him after having caved on “Obamacare”, it will be one less “voice advocating for people” in the House.
What a fantastic Super Tuesday. Flipping back and forth between cable channels, it was just an awesome performance by the most brilliant pundits in the business. Gave me chills.
I admit it is fun watching the right wingers destroy each other.
But my goodness. Imagine if just part of that kind of energy and devotion by the networks were spent delving into trying to get to the bottom of any one of these issues: the global warming debate; the consequences of fracking; NSDA’s consequences; why we’ve been involved in wars for 11 years and are headed into another one; how public education is being destroyed; the disappearance of the middle class; and an examination of the Occupy movement and resistance it is facing; the expanding police state.
That would be real public service. Instead, they’re spending the better part of nearly a year, every day, micro-analyzing the political grandstanding and lies that will bring us a new president, or the same one, with pretty much the same results and no more closer to solving these issues brought on by the major assault on this country by the right wingers.
