Because if you do, you probably have your own reasons.
Me, I come for the conversation, the breaking news, the unfettered analysis, the other side of the coin, the through-the-glass-darkly viewpoint. Here’s what I mean: On any given day, after a brief scan of the internet, I can tell you almost exactly what stories will appear on the network nightly news broadcasts — some days, I can even predict the order of their appearance around the pharma ads (if there’s no breaking pill-or-patch news) or the car ads (if there’s no exploding-or-recalled-vehicle news) or the giant bank ads (if there’s no robosigning, eviction, creative fee, or bailout news).
But I can never predict what’s gonna show up here at FDL. I never know what my colleagues are working on and what might percolate onto the front page. That’s because the breadth-of-field is so vast.
But I do know this: what I read here won’t be constrained by sponsorship. It won’t be trimmed down to please a funder. It needn’t be slanted to avoid offense to a patron. That doesn’t happen here — and that makes us darn near unique.
Don’t you think the Huffington Post is in a bit of a box reporting on advertisers fleeing Rush Limbaugh after his latest offense, given that their parent company AOL is still a sponsor? Don’t you suppose there are some pretty strict parameters at the Washington Post around reporting on the expanding for-profit education scandals, considering Kaplan Test Prep University pays the bills over there, and has for years? And do you look to NBC or MSNBC for the most accurate Pentagon-unapproved war news, considering their reliance on retired industry-corrupted-generals-for-pay and the big General Electric logo on their paychecks?
We Firedoglake members are the owners here. When we saw the need for warm-weather gear at #Occupy encampments nationwide, we organized to meet it. When we realized that Legacy Media’s narrative was that “#Occupy is over” we organized sponsorship of traveling scribes from one city to another, to carry the word of best-practices and report back to all of us what they were. When we realized the wrong questions were being asked of all the wrong players about the foreclosure fraud crisis, we were lucky to have an intrepid News-man to task, open-endedly, to ferret out the answers most reporters didn’t even know to ask.
And — do I need to add? — I hope when I say “we” I include you. You’re a member, right? And you’re continuing as a member, correct? I sure hope so. Because we Sunday-nighters are a tight bunch, although we welcome newcomers when they show up (if they mind their manners, woe betide those who don’t!). So I’m only saying it one time during our evening together: join, please, if you haven’t. Firedoglake needs your support: progressive infrastructure needs building, and it’s a-building right here, with your contribution.
Because, if you come here often (like I do!) you need to become a member. Firedoglake needs your support; we need your membership. A steady stream of invested member dollars is the best way to continue to build this infrastructure and to be able to respond creatively when the Next New Thing comes along that deserves FDL’s attention.
Please join up!

About Firedoglake
Teddy!
A charter member here, but will definitely re-up when the time comes. Late night at the Lake has helped keep me sane for a lot of years.
teddy! founding member here and i’m reupping! so glad to have found my online home at fdl
Thank you for your continued support, DrDick.
Means a lot to all of us.
I’m about at page 15, enjoying the thesis very much, but haven’t had much time to devote to it this week. Liking it a great deal, looking forward to individuals’ experiences….
Hey there, you Founder you!
Still staying off that leg?
Glad to hear it. She did a great job on it and everyone on the committee was thrilled. One thing we all commented on was how powerful and effective those personal narratives, even in short clips, were. She is an extremely gifted fieldworker who has a phenomenal ability to connect with people and get them to open up.
yup — two weeks down, a minimum of 10 weeks to go
Oy! Are you able to get around much at all?
That hurts me every time I think of it. Hang in there! (Like you have a choice!)
first i was only permitted to use the walker to the hall bath and last week it was uppped to the end of the hallway. kaiser is sending the pt lady out tomorrow and i’ll find out what this week’s plan is. no weight-bearing but the doc thur had me start to do some minor range of motion stuff with both the ankle and knee.
But I can never predict what’s gonna show up here at FDL. I never know what my colleagues are working on and what might percolate onto the front page. That’s because the breadth-of-field is so vast.
Ain’t that the truth, Teddy…! *g*
Hi Margaret! How are you doing tonight?
Every day is better, then?
i keep telling myself that :)
We really are amazingly lucky to have such a wide-ranging skill- and expertise-set, especially when you count the MyFDL team. It’s incredible.
And, I will add, worthy of support.
Still awake but barely. Feeling much better than this time last week at least. How are you?
Well, at least you are not bedridden or confined to a wheelchair. That could get pretty grim, though I am not sure how much better the walker is. As Meg says, hang in there! We are all pulling for you.
???
…start to do some minor range of motion stuff…
That’s a positive sign, Suz…! *g*
thanks margaret — the support of my family and my fdl family has helped me immensely
Why the question marks? Was I typing gibberish? :)
actually i am both. i live in a hospital bed set up in jen’s living room and am strongly encouraged to use the wheelchair instead of the walker.
Not at all, I was just inquiring about the trouble staying awake. I guess I was afraid somebody else had health issues I was not aware of.
Teddy, lovely post! And I just want to thank you again for posting the “8″ program last night. Unexpected….and incredibly powerful to hear the transcript of the Prop8 read as a play. I’ve steered both of my daughters to it and both are so interested in watching. It was just a WOW!
This FDL internet home is wonderfully warm and nurturing. I love my ‘Founding Member’ card and will re-up…..of course!
BTW, Teddy, feel free to share that dissertation with anyone who might be interested. The more people that know about Amee and her work, the better. It is not like you get any royalties for it and University Microfilms doesn’t need the money.
Oh no, just looking at the clock and thinking I’d better turn in soon, that’s all. :)
Good! I know that feeling myself, as a charter member of the early shift on late night.
g’nite margaret
Margaret had the “ick” that’s been laying people low all over the country. Glad she’s merely tired now. Margaret, you are the best! Stay well and ease back into full steam ahead.
I’m good.
Inspired about seeing “8″ last night. We’ll be discussing it tomorrow for Movie Night — it was surreal, watching famous actors say all those words I type type typed two years ago!
But you are surrounded by grandbaby, so there’s that!
Thanks very much for your support, Dearie.
Last night was very cool. We’ll be talking about it tomorrow at 5:00fdl on Lisa’s Movie Night. I’m really happy the powerful words get a wide audience. It was especially great to see the Plaintiffs dealing with their family issues, I thought: tacos? tapas?
*heh* You and EDP are charter members of the LN crew…! ;-)
Sweet dreams, Peg…!
There are some folks in SF who I worked with who might be interested in a rural perspective. I’ll let you know whom I send it to.
Teddy, I was sharing the experience with my daughter this afternoon…telling her about how ‘my’ FDL folks were live-blogging the event and how moved I was to see famous actors read the lines. Almost brought tears to my eyes. She is looking forward to seeing the tape when it is posted. Teddy, you must have been almost overwhelmed to hear words you’d typed …. amazing! The ability to be part of what’s happening while it is happening is one of the reasons I am so pleased to pay my fair share to keep this site so lively. Stunning!
Good deal. She will be at the CDC (not sure where, as they sent her a list of places to choose from and she had not decided last I heard) for the next year or so and then will be looking for a permanent job. I am not sure if she will be looking for an academic or a research/applied position, though I have indications she is interested in the former. I know she wants to continue and expand on her work on AIDS and the LGBT community. She really has a passion and a commitment there.
That totally rawks, Dr. D…! Bravo to ya and Brava to her…! ;-)
I’ll email you about where I forwarded the dissertation. My professor daughter is interested. Thank you for sending it to me. FDL rocks! Anyone who isn’t clear that this community is a rich and thoughtful community of folks who pursue ethics and moral responsibility and learning and purposefulness just hasn’t caught the spirit yet.
Like Teddy say, Join Us!
Her passion shines through, even though it’s an academic exercise.
I wish I had the patience to sit and read something more focusedly (WP says that’s not a word) but blogging seems to have reduced my attention span….
Glad to share it. That is really what we academics are all about, sharing and spreading knowledge. Many of us also want to make the world a better place. I know I do and so does Amee.
She really is the dream student. She is brilliant, passionate, dedicated, hardworking, and a really nice person as well.
Uh-oh. I killed the thread. All is forgiven. Come on back and I promise not to talk about my student anymore.
Not your fault at all. It’s nine pm; folks who keep track know that’s when The Good Wife starts at our house. Commercial now!
I’m so appreciative to all of you who’ve joined here at SLN. I’ll have another post up tomorrow sometime during the day, if any of you can come by to talk about your membership experiences, that would be great!
Thanks!
Now, what did everyone think about Brad Pitt as Judge Vaughn Walker? The goatee was simply killer, I thought!
Time for me to toddle off as well. Take care all.
Bless you, Teddy, for all you do at the Lake, for your past reporting on the 8 trial, etc. etc.
Just watched the Utube “production” of the “8″ trial. Bless Reiner and the cast. Bless Pitt and Clooney for their humourous portrayals, and (LOrd help me,I can’t remember his name, the TV president who was so wonderfully profound in his summary, etc. etc. And Lynch, wasn’t she wonderfully funny while being cast down as irrelevant, etc. etc. LOrdy, I’m not a theater critic, but I sure do know what i like in TV/net drama.
Someday…… my there be justice on that issue and all the other issues that
cry out in refusals of despair.
So tomorrow at the capitol they are expecting some 10k folks rallying for a solution to the high costs of student debt, etc. And some say 1k cops. I go to support the students and to get signatures on the petitions to give the
Commissioner of Insurance permission to say yes or not to health insurers when they want to raise their rates; here’s hoping we win on that ballot measure in November.
Blessings to all those who come to Lake for all the wonderful reasons that Teddy articulated in his opening paragraphs. And thanks to you Teddy for being one of the risen stars here.
Why, thank you! What kind thoughts.
And thank you for your support.
Oh DrDick — so very true!
Pleasant Dreams, Dr. D…!
Hey Suzanne,
Me too! I’m really late here (sorry).
…thanks to you Teddy for being one of the risen stars here.
One of my all-time faves, fer sure…! ;-)
Uh-oh… Did I just kill another thread…?
I’m not dead…
just lurking
Sorry, DrDck already claimed the killer status. (Heh!) And I got kind EPUd downthread with an anecdote about how Alphas get cordoned off by ‘sweet’ teachers… (and I was a teacher, so believe me, there is no teacher bashing going on here!) Not only is FDL the most informative and intellectual and purposeful place to be…..it is also the most amusing!
Hey nahant,
Are you well?
*heh* The wit and snark is second to none…! ;-)
Hey CT!
Hello, CE! How are you tonight?
Hi Teddy! I’m just swell, as my Grandma used to say.
Hanging in there flu has hit the rest of the family..
I think of you every time we watch Portlandia. How is life there, and do you love this show?
Oh, gosh, so sorry. Flu is my worst nightmare.
Aloha, Christine…! Can I call ya tomorrow sometime…?
That totally bites, nahant…! I hope all of ‘em get well soon…!
Yes,please!

Why I always get the shot.. Of course my DR’s insist… And the VA makes it real easy..
I always get my flu shot too, but I think something made it through the armor last week. There’s quite a bit o’ick around Portlandia this month.
It’s down here also Teddy!! Hope all is well with ya!!
I still get tinges of it, but also sleep. A lot!
